Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Arsenal somehow manage to avoid a third consecutive Champions League opening defeat while Manchester City’s match (and the transport network) fall foul of the weather on a stormy night in every sense of the word.

Sanchez snatches point for Gunners

A 77th-minute strike from Alexis Sanchez (11.0) gave Arsenal a point they barely deserved from their Champions League opener in Paris.

Possession, attempts and shots on target stats might have been almost even, but the hosts were markedly the better side and should have won easily if not for their profligacy in front of goal.

The chief culprit was Edinson Cavani, who opened the scoring after just 42 seconds and then want on to waste three further chances as Arsenal struggled to find any rhythm throughout a torrid first half.

Arsene Wenger made three changes from the side that beat Southampton on Saturday, with Sanchez and Alex Iwobi (5.8) replacing Lucas Perez (8.5) and Theo Walcott (7.5), with the Chilean playing up front.

More surprisingly, Wenger opted for David Ospina (4.9) over Petr Cech (5.5) in goal. It was a purely tactical choice, the Frenchman insisted, which will be a relief for the 16.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers who own Cech – the third most popular keeper in the game.

“I have two world-class goalkeepers. I can give them both games. If they do not play, you can’t keep two world-class goalkeepers. But we have an in-house rule that the keepers know. It’s important to have clear rules like that. They know what the rules are for the season and, if they change, I’ll tell them. It’s down to performances whether he stays in the team but, on what he delivered tonight, David has the right to stay in the team for the next Champions League game.” – Arsene Wenger

Walcott’s omission, meanwhile, was precautionary for what Wenger described as a ‘very short term’ knee problem.

Arsenal, who looked porous at the back all night, improved after the break, but it took the introduction of Olivier Giroud (9.0) to change the course of the match. The move meant a return to the left flank for Sanchez and he thrived in that more familiar role, firing home a rebound from an Iwobi shot.

It’s two goals and as many assists in his last pair of starts now for Sanchez – he currently sits third in this week’s Captain Poll ahead of a trip to a Hull side that have conceded an attempt on goal every 4.6 minutes so far, quicker than any other side.

Giroud is yet to start a match this season, and he won’t be doing that in the Champions League any time soon having been sent off for a second bookable offence following a clash with Marco Verratti. That, conversely, could improve the striker’s domestic minutes if Wenger looks to rotate his squad for future European ties.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Monreal, Koscielny, Mustafi, Bellerin, Coquelin (Xhaka 71), Ozil (Elneny 85), Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Giroud 63), Iwobi, Sanchez.

Pep’s European bow washed away

Torrential rain and a lightning storm that struck down Manchester’s tram network put paid to Pep Guardiola’s first group stage match as City boss.

There was time, however, to at least announce the team, with a number of decisions giving some pointers ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Bournemouth.

As expected, Sergio Aguero (13.0) was given the nod up front but remains banned domestically, while the in-form Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) continued in midfield despite limping off towards the end of the Manchester derby with what the local press had reported as cramp through fatigue.

Guardiola went for Aleksandar Kolarov (5.9) and Pablo Zabaleta (4.9) as his full-backs, which could indicate that Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy (both 5.4) are being lined up to start versus Bournemouth.

And Nolito (9.0) was replaced by Jesus Navas (6.4), again suggesting that the Celta Vigo signing is being preserved for a run at the Cherries.

The tie was re-scheduled to this evening, leaving City with just two full days to prepare for the Bournemouth fixture, and Guardiola might well shuffle his pack further as a result.

Man City XI: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Navas, De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Aguero.

Will this be a good team after gw6?

    Foster - Jaku
    Williams - Stones - Friend - Souare - Amat
    Hazard - Firminho - Antonio - Lamela - Bolasie
    Aguero - Lukaku - Benteke

Or downgrade Bolasie to 4.5 and have 2.1 to spend on other places? For example Lamela >> Sterling/Cazorla or Stones >> Valencia...

Team at present (which did me well with 74 points last week)

    Valencia Baines McAuley Souare Amat
    Hazard Ozil Firmino Antonio Capoue
    Ibra Lukaku Benteke

Souare will become either Stones or Holebas depending on how I bring in Aguero (and when I can do on free transfer)

Views on which option you would select over next 2 weeks as free transfers

    A. Ozil to Cazorla and Ibra to Aguero (would allow Souare to Stones). With this option may make Ozil to Cazorla switch this week to catch rise.
    B. Ozil to Alli and Ibra to Aguero
    C. Ozil to Snodgrass and Lukaku to Aguero
    D. Another option?

OK... well it's only a 1 week punt if you're gonna WC pre GW6

I'd probably do one of the below:
Rondon > Tekkers - Stoke look terrible at the moment
Ramirez > Cazorla (I'm on Double Arse at the moment with the same 2)

Oh geez, these are the two exact moves i'm considering. Ramirez out seems like a bigger priority but Benteke is the better upgrade. This is not good.

Everton scored twice at the Hawthorns and West Ham desperately need to bounce back after that capitulation against Watford. West Brom defence is a great affordable source of clean sheets but overrated on here imo.

I disagree with the selling of Hazard.

He's continually rising in value, and whilst I wouldn't say he's fixture proof, he'll be close to it, especially with being on pens.

I'll admit that I did consider it recently, but so far this season he's been pretty consistent. On another day, he could've easily got points on Sunday.

            Im in trouble!

            Foster Heaton
            Valencia Amat Friend Terry Holgate
            Hazard Tadic Townsend Capoue Mirallas
            Ibra Lukaku Wilson

Just brought Lukaku in for Aguero and got 4,7 ITB, 0 FT and WC left

            1. Take hits and bring in some bigshot midfielder in the likes of Alexis, Özil, Payet.
            2. Take hits and fix my troubling defence, and how?
            3. Leave it
            4. Leave it and WC next game week

              3.

I would only be worried about Holgate at the moment. Terry is short term by sounds of it.

I don't really believe in taking hits!

Your midfield and attack looks decent enough. Are you bringing Aguero back in?

Yes want both Terry and Holgate out and yeah I have to get Aguero back. Thinking of trying to fit Aguero Lukaku and Ibra, downgrading Terry and Townsend/Tadic.

95% on FPLStats. That .1 rise is going to really screw up my WC team unless Aguero also drops.

              Yes.

Why? It's Sergio god damn Aguero.

It's Swansea away, which is a great fixture. Sergio scores more away from home than at the Etihad, in fact. El Captino etc.

You're on a WC, I'll decide after the GW.

I'm hoping Ibra braces so he rises and I have more value in selling him for Aguero towards the end of the deadline.

I think the heavy hitter combo of Kun-Ibra-Costa up front is still the way to go.

all 3 should get +20 goals this season

basically it's a choice between having either 1 or 2 high priced mids such as Hazard-Sanchez-KDB

IMO Costa should outscore all three and he's cheaper.

Quite a few mid priced midfield options now make it viable: Cazorla, Lallana, Siggy, Antonio all around 7m-7.6m

true but I like consistant players, if feel like I could put a cap on any one of those 3 strikers without too much risk, midfield is always a risky cap for me so I'd rather invest upfront. Got cap choice wrong so many times last season it killed me. I really think cap choice is the key to this game.

Disagree. I've dropped Z for that amount of money I want more. Kun kinda points. A goal here and there doesn't justify the price. Rather have say Lukaku and use the money else where to beef up mids etc. Too top heavy with those 3.

Lukaku only saves you 0.8m, not much value in mids priced around 8m so would probably get a Baines in instead. Am tempted by Lukaku but he drives me nuts with his streaky runs.

I'd wait until Chelsea's fixtures turn and Costa gets his 5 YC ban out of the way before bringing him in personally - there just seems to be better value for a 3rd striker over the next few GWs imo

Considering Costa has been most consistant striker so far getting points every game, that surprises me. Last season Chelsea failed the seaon before he got 20 goals in his debut season and his record before arriving at Chelsea shows that was no fluke. I think ppl underestimate him and Chelsea shouldn't be bothered to much by fixtures they look like a threat once more.

Wildcard question. If I activate on Friday night, and I make all my transfers except for Ibra to Aguero - will the prices changes then affect that transfer? So if Ibra braces it'd be worthwhile waiting to make the switch until right before the deadline so Ibra rises again?

                  I hope that makes sense.

I am assuming once you lock the transfer then you aren't affected by the price changes.
