The Stock Check – Gameweek 9 – Sunday

Chelsea’s midfielders “do a Liverpool” and rack up big hauls in an emphatic home win over Manchester United. Sergio Aguero returns to the Manchester City starting line-up but draws yet another blank, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic again falls short as United are humbled at the Bridge. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches…

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
While Diego Costa surprisingly failed to play a part in any of Chelsea four goals, Hazard notched for the second successive Gameweek to continue his recent renaissance.

The Blues’ recent change in shape has been key to the Belgian’s improvement – only Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has managed more shots in the box from midfield since Antonio Conte ditched his four-man defensive set-up.

At a time where rotation has recently hit hard following European matches, the fact that Chelsea are focused purely on domestic matters may yet persuade some to reconsider a resurgent Hazard.

Costa, meanwhile, also managed to avoid a booking today, leaving him on four yellows ahead of Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash with West Ham United. If he’s cautioned in that one, he’ll miss next weekend’s Gameweek 10 trip to Southampton.

Nemanja Matic
The Chelsea stopper has been transformed under Conte this season and continues to offer a steady source of creativity from the centre of the park.

Matic managed just three assists last season, but he’s already up to five this time around after teeing up Hazard for the Blues’ third. That’s the same number as Dimitri Payet and second only to Kevin De Bruyne’s six.

All five assists have arrived in the last seven Gameweeks as the Serb steadily improves in the 3-4-3 formation. Priced at 5.0, Matic has suddenly become an unlikely option for the fifth midfielder slot.

The Chelsea Defence
Conte’s men made it three wins and a trio of clean sheets since moving to a 3-4-3 formation.

Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso highlighted their points potential with goal and assist respectively, earning both players bonus in the Red Devils’ thrashing.

Alonso has been the standout performer since Conte’s tactical switch and looks the man to monitor. He sits first for attempts on goal amongst defenders from Gameweek 7 onwards and is ranked second for key passes thanks to his role as a raiding left wing-back.

Nathan Redmond
Redmond’s underlying numbers have already been impressive over the season due to his role up top for Southampton.

One goal in the first seven shows he’d been failing to tuck away his chances but Sunday’s Etihad strike, added to last week’s goal against Burnley, suggests that Redmond’s form and confidence is on the ascent.

Having dropped to just 5.9 in the FPL, he is clearly a tempting prospect. However, the Saints’ schedule is testing, with Chelsea and Liverpool looming in the next three.

Also, the introduction of new boy Sofiane Boufal also adds to Claude Puel’s options in attack. The intentions for the club-record signing are not yet clear but we can presume a starting role beckons. It remains to be seen how this shakes up the Saints’ teamsheet.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
The striker returned to the starting XI after a couple of appearances off the bench, but there’s no doubt that Aguero was nowhere near his best against the Saints, with all three of his attempts off target.

The Argentine remains the most popular player in FPL – sitting in 44% of squads; he was also the top pick for this weekend’s captaincy.

But Sunday’s blank means that Aguero has now failed to score in four of his last five league appearances. With the goals suddenly drying up for City (they’ve scored twice in four in all competitions), Fantasy faith in the Etihad side is on the wane and Aguero and Raheem Sterling are taking the hit.

Aguero’s ownership fell ahead of Gameweek 9 and is already dropping following Sunday’s 1-point return.

Kevin De Bruyne
Replaced at half-time with a knock, the Belgian’s owners will take solace in the fact that Pep Guardiola has confirmed the problem is not serious. Given the recent uncertainty surrounding Aguero’s pitch time, some Fantasy managers have been considering De Bruyne as their go-to City attacker ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Confirmation that his withdrawal was not tactical will at least go some way to softening a disappointing one-point return.

John Stones
City’s run of dire defensive displays continued, with their big-money signing from Everton gifting Redmond the opener.

Guardiola’s side have kept one clean sheet this season, which, coincidentally, was the only league fixture that Stones has failed to start.

With Vincent Kompany now back in the fold, the 24%-owned defender now looks under threat – today’s benching of Nicolas Otamendi shows we cannot take anything for granted with Guardiola’s teamsheets.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
The United veteran endured yet another disappointing day and has now scored just a single goal in his last seven league outings.

A home encounter with Burnley in Gameweek 10 may well be enough for many to hand him one last hurrah before reassessing their options.

The Clarets have conceded an average of three goals per road trip and, with 39% ownership, a big haul could still do damage to non-owners.

Many have already had enough, though – Ibrahimovic has already been subject to more transfers out than any forward ahead of Gameweek 10, having already lost 900,000 owners since Gameweek 5.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I have an Arsenal and Liverpool triple up. Is this too much? Brought Walcott in last week and just did my transfer this week bringing Shaq in.

I have Bellerin Walcott Sanchez from arsenal and Firmino Mane Lovren from Liverpool (looking to swap Lovren out for clyne when i get a chance).

Liverpool have amazing fixtures and I reckon we'll start keeping the odd clean sheet, going forward imo we've got the best attack in the league so I think it's worth the double up of Firmino and Mane.

Re Arsenal, I'm not too sure about the double up in Mid. Will give it another gameweek or two but otherwise may look to swap one of them out!

What do people think about having more then 50% of your first XI from 2 teams?

Not sure on pool defence, leicester defense is much better.

Keep Walcott and Sanchez for this week and then get rid of one of them for the following week

On paper, both teams justify double mids. Sanchez is the striker so it's fine to have Walcott too. Liverpool situation also warrants it, kind of. I have double Arsenal but backed out of double Liverpool. I don't think they'll all score every week so you end up with two to 'make sure' you get some returns. I think pick one and hope for the best. I don't trust Liverpool defence though so get a different defender there. imo

Imo re. fixtures and form I think I can justify a Liverpool mid double up more then an Arsenal one. In fact I had the Liverpool double up for longer then the Arsenal one. They won't all score every week but then again Arsenal blanked this week too it's bound to happen. I just reckon we have the best attack at the moment and looking at the fixtures I think a Liverpool double up in mid will turn out rosey.

I'm with you re. the Liverpool defence, if I can get enough funds together will try swap Lovren out for Alonso.

I have cout, firm, clyne...sanchez, wally, mustafi. Also have Franics&Wilson, Holebas&Deeney.

Just get the players that you think will score the most. There is risk mitigation so I don't particularly like captaining any of my triple up players but if the fixtures and form are there, then why not!

Exactly my thinking behind it, but like Arsenal's stalemate there's a chance of a horrible week when both teams falter! But I do think Liverpool will be the team that scores the most goals in the league this season and will look to keep those 2 through the season.

I had holebas and capoue too but took capoue out this week. What's your team looking like?

    Which defender??:

    1. Pieters/Cameron

    2. Holebas

    3. Smith/Francis

Not sure which one to choose to replace Baines so I have money to upgrade snodgrass.

Rest of defence is Mustafi Valencia Evans Amat, so I need someone to rotate well with West Brom fixtures. Apparently Bournemouth work well, but stoke fixtures look so tempting, and Holebas has such great attacking threat.

Disappointing GW with Arsenal mid double up failing - and no Liverpool mids to compensate. Have brought in Couthino for Sterling now, so current midfield is:
Sanchez - Walcott - Couthino - Antonio - de Roon

    A) Lallana
    B) Chadli
    C) Shaqiri

    E) Arnie

Ha. Good point. He's in a good team though. Put him in an average/poor one (like England) and he struggles. Same with Shaqiri. His team isn't good enough to make him viable.

            Good opinion Oddjo.

            How about redmond?
Surely better pick than Shaq even with tougher and trickier fixtures?

Yeah I like Redmond. Wouldn't double with Austin (who I have) but if didn't I'd have Redmond. That new guy might mix it up a bit though

For me, the only value AOA has is when you don't have 3 playing defenders. A small piece of insurance if you have in advance knowledge.

Not really, I am saying use AOA when you don't have 3 playing defenders. This can happen through injury/suspension.

Tried that last season when I had a few defenders injured/suspended. Bad plan.

It's an All Out Attack chip. Best played when you've 8 good attackers in the GW. Though to be honest I think AOA is a trap ! Don't play it.

Trades this week for free were Stones -> Kinglsey and Antonio -> Coutinho

    Wild card still available.

    Schmeichel

    Sanchez / Redmond / Coutinho / Firmino
    Aguero / Deeney / Lukaku

    (Jaku / Capoue / Evans / Kinglsey)

Grant will keep his place for next 2 gameweek until Butland returns
Give Manchester City player few week (they have favorable fixture) and they don't start performing well then sell them
Sell only Antonio and don't take hit

  20. Eze Really?

    7 years, 7 months ago

A lot of talk about Arnie/Shaq. fair enough due to fixtures.
    But:
    Is Arnie playing well?
Is Shaq a bit kneejerk considering past history?
Has Joe Allen affected their points chances?

Only for that reason am I steering clear for now.

    1. Christina.
      • 14 Years

Arnie should have scored 2 vs Hull.

      Shaq did.

      1. Eze Really?
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 7 months ago

        Yeah but Hull?
Which one of the 3 would you choose. I would not have 2 and would never take on Shaq.

        1. Christina.
          • 14 Years
          7 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, Hull. that's why I bought Arnie 2 weeks ago knowing he's facing

          Sun/HULL/SWANS/wham/BOURNE/watf/BURN

Fixtures don't come better than that and Stoke's turned the corner. Had Arnie put one of those chances away everyone would have been over him.

I'm on Arnie with Capoue as 5th.

Good logic IMO but went a stoke defender instead not being sure of their future performances at the time and a slight high price.

Joe Allen seems to have got the Stoke attack going a little by playing further forward.
If anything he should help both players.

    Aguero – Lukaku – Deeney

thinking about Baines ➡ Pieters this week.

    Pickford / Capoue / Snodgrass / Amat

Coleman, Snoddy, Amat and Capoue on the chopping list GW11. Right to save FT?
