Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 10

Our latest captain poll has now launched to gauge your opinion on the favourites and differential options for the Gameweek 10 armband.

Arsenal’s dynamic duo of 23.8% owned Alexis Sanchez (11.3) and Theo Walcott (8.1) were the top two choices for the captaincy in Gameweek 9 and are expected to be popular once again, despite both drawing blanks at home to Middlesbrough at the weekend.

Their failure to score was not for want of trying as the pair fired off seven goal attempts between them, with all of 21.2% owned Walcott’s three shots finding the target. Away to a Sunderland side with no clean sheets this season, they seem primed to pick up points.

Another likely candidate for the summit is 29.6% owned Romelu Lukaku (9.7), who earned an assist against Burnley’s resolute defence on Saturday. With West Ham visiting he should also have more chances, as the London side have conceded nine goals across their four away fixtures this term.

Burnley may be rock solid defensively at home but away from Turf Moor it is another matter. They have shipped nine on the road and travel to a wounded Manchester United side eager to restore pride after their 4-0 away defeat to Chelsea at the weekend.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.3) has lost a further 36,144 FPL owners this week already, but with a 39.2% ownership he is still likely to be a popular captaincy pick among managers overall. We anticipate it may be a different story with our poll, after five league outings in a row without a goal.

Paul Pogba (8.3) and Marcos Rashford (6.9) offer differential options for those that believe the Red Devils can overcome Sunday’s humiliation. Both have an FPL ownership just below 10%.

Two teams with an even worse away record than Burnley present another glut of armband options.

No side has conceded more than Leicester’s 13 away goals and with the Foxes visiting Tottenham, Christian Eriksen (8.2), Dele Alli (8.2) and Heung-min Son (7.7) all step forward as viable captaincy candidates. With 20 points over his last three league appearances, Alli looks the pick of this trio.

The other travel sick side is Hull, who face a Watford side that has scored in all their home league matches this season. The Tigers’ concession of 12 goals on the road therefore gives the Hornet’s penalty taking striker Troy Deeney (7.1) significant potential for returns.

For those who want to take a risk on placing the armband on a defender, Hornets wing-back Jose Holebas (4.6) also looks enticing, with 27 points in his last three league matches.

Manchester City’s stock as the prime route to captaincy candidates has taken a knock in recent weeks with 43.9% owned Sergio Aguero (13.1) last finding the net in the league back in Gameweek 6.

If fit, Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) may offer a more secure option – the 10.1% owned Belgian was substituted against Southampton on Sunday after suffering a knock but looks likely to return when City travel to West Brom.

A final mention goes to the roulette wheel that is Liverpool’s options. With a visit to a Crystal Palace side without a clean sheet this term Sadio Mane (9.0), Philippe Coutino (8.4) and Roberto Firmino (8.5) all look strong candidates. But which will emerge with the biggest points haul from game to game remains one of this season’s key mysteries.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Heaton
    Walker - Stones - Holebas
    Lamela - Sanchez (c) - Coutinho - Allen - Sterling
    Lukaku - Aguero

What should I change? Will Rashford play but for whom? Can you help me please?

I read an interesting post about when to sell stocks (http://avc.com/2016/10/selling/) and the principles outlined in the post actually transcend to fantasy football really well.

The main thesis is that selling is an action driven by emotion, and you will often hold on to an asset for too long, or sell too soon, only to see it bite you.

Therefore, in order to take the emotion and regret out of it, you make a formulaic decision. You make a set criteria, and you sell (a player) at that point every single time, relying on the law of averages to even out.

Essentially, it is impossible to optimise the sell point, therefore making it systematic and formulaic makes more sense.

I really like this, and think I will apply it to my game.

    My initial thoughts are:

Sell any 9M+ midfielder or striker with three consecutive blanks
Sell any 5M-9M midfielder or striker with five consecutive blanks

What other criteria would you consider? Or think I should?

Fixtures and form have to come into it though. For example. Selling Rashford right now looks good, because he's not only blanking, but not getting chances full stop. But selling say Deeney, who is on pens, with good fixtures and is getting the chances is a tougher call.

There will be no hard and set formula. Although like the idea in theory. By any sensible decision making process we should all be selling aguero right now, it is fear that is holding us back...

        Good and fair points.

I guess there would need to be clarification on minutes etc as well, as technically Aguero only played 35 minutes against Everton, so should it be three games of near 90 minutes etc.

I like the fact that the formula kind of removes fear though, once you set the criteria, if you always make that decision with no exceptions.

will you sell a 9M+ midfielder/striker who has just blanked in games against City/Chelsea/United but has Sunderland/Hull/Swansea next?

Yeah, some way to bake fixtures as well as form into the formula would make sense, but harder to implement.

you have a lot more tangible future events which will happen, i.e. fixtures. Not so much certainty with stocks

True, but this is also possible to factor in, using the shades on the fixture tracker for example "If no blues in the next three, and has blanked for the last three"

Well, technically his assist saves him when using this criteria

Ah yes sorry. One more blank. It's personal preference but I world holds some of these proven quality big hitters longer than 3 blanks. Eh Aguero and Sanchez. But I didn't apply that to Ibra because he's not long term PL proven.

Please help. Just so lost as to where to improve this. Know I need Stoke cover really, but where. Happy to make 3 transfers if required.

    Heaton/Pickford
    Coleman, Mustafi, Holebas, (Kelly, Kingsley)
    Sanchez, Payet, Firmino, Snodgrass, (Fletcher.)
    Aguero, Rashford, Lukaku.

    Two FT. 0 in bank.

Coleman (WHU) --> Pieters (SWA) and rollover. Long-term I think you net even points this GW on this move (Pieters CS more likely, Coleman goal/assist not too unlikely) but it saves you a FT down the line and maybe even a hit.

Not really. You play him up front as a striker, But Ibra is first choice so he plays out wide.

I'm sure he would rather play out wide then not at all.

I dont agree, he should be a sub for Ibra as we have no other reliable striker. Ibra should be rested in either cup games or Europa League and then Rashford should start in his place. This would give him time to develop without putting too much pressure on an 19 year old kid.

You play him as a striker or at least a #10 off Ibra. The issue is Pogba can't play in a 2 man midfield, it's a total mismatch.

Had a comment on my last comment, that Payet's 4 fixtures from GW12 are 'woeful'. They certainly look it on paper, but how did he do against these four teams; Spurs, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, last year?

                Arsenal: 1 assist
                Spurs: 1 assist
Man Utd: 1 goal, 2 assists
                Liverpool (FA Cup): 1 assist

Not bad at all. Only one I'd really even think about benching him is the game against Spurs, but even then Spurs are only conceding against set pieces, which is where Payet excels. Same with Liverpool, who are vulnerable from set pieces.

                9, 10, 1, 10, 3, 7 in his last 6 gameweeks, I don't see any real appeal in taking him out for GW12 - 16!

Ayew, Carroll coming back. I had a look at the goals, and for these fixtures, the goals were set pieces.

And West Ham are still doing well from set pieces this year!

Surprising how few are even considering him on here. He's brought in a raft of good scores in the last 6 weeks, and that's in a West Ham team with bad form.

Their injured players are starting to return, and their form is getting slightly better.

I've got him but tempted to sell for Coutinho/Mane. Price/fixtures. I agree that Payet is pretty fixture proof, but don't you think that a cheaper Liverpool mid could easily outscore him during those gameweeks?

I was all set to sell for KDB but may just keep him through the tough stretch now. KDB is made of glass and I already have Firmino and Coutinho. Payet over Sterling on my WC has already paid big dividends

I've resorted to not comment and ask for help this season but I'm finding myself at a catch 22. Is Aguero going to be dropped? Is it worth going for cheaper alternatives?

Any advice on how to gut this team?

                Bellerin/Valencia/Walker/McAuley/Kingsley

                  Hold onto Aguero.

Your team looks quote strong overall.

Milner and Antonio are 2 I would get rid of. Bring in Firm/Cout/Mane and someone else then (Not sure how much cash you would have left or in the bank?)

An Aguero stat for you. He's now gone five in a row in all competitions without a goal.

Since joining City, he's only gone six in a row on two occasions. Both times in 2014/15. Dec - Jan and then Mar - Apr.

With a trip to West Brom next, surely he's a decent bet to get back on the scoresheet?

Without doubling your captains points, did your forward line get into double figures GW8?

Only(the no doubt highly popular)Vokes, Musa, Okazaki, and Iheanacho scored.

Lukaku, Slimani, and Robson-Kanu, were the only forwards to assist.

Realistically which of these were you considering selecting for GW8?

It was 'just one of those weeks'. Hopefully GW9 will be better.
