This Much We Know – Gameweek 9

Philippe Coutinho may have settled an argument. Sergio Aguero is scaring us, Bob Bradley is already off our Christmas list but we can’t get enough of Antonio Conte. Here’s all the stuff and nonsense gathered from Gameweek 9…

Aguero has put the frighteners on us…
Okay, so now we’re worried.

Despite nagging doubts, we had the confidence that Pep would hand Aguero a recall but, I for one was expecting a very different reaction from the man himself.

While Aguero’s listless display was symptomatic of City’s first half malaise, there’s no doubt that Sunday’s showing dented our confidence further.

It seems unfeasible that we should consider dropping a fit Sergio Aguero, particularly with the fixture list about to smile on Guardiola’s City.

But, with just a single goal in five Premier League appearances, it’s difficult to argue against claims that Aguero is now failing to offer value.

We’ve always had faith in the City man as a captain option – that ensured that, however much the FPL inflated his price tag, he would always offer the potential returns to justify it.

Right now, it’s debatable just how many of us would throw the armband his way ahead of a Gameweek 10 trip to West Brom – an opponent that will raise their game and revel in City’s apparent loss of confidence.

If we’re not looking to Aguero for double points, the thirteen million starts to look very very expensive.

Coutinho is close to ending the argument…
Another mesmeric display. Another goal.

Philippe Coutinho is getting close to ending all the chatter on Liverpool’s best midfield option and giving us little option but to tow the line and acquire his services.

There’s a strong argument for doubling with Roberto Firmino – certainly the pair appear to offer a tempting combination of goals and assists – a blend that drowns out the claims of Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane.

Mane scored and assisted in Saturday’s game but was again denied the maximum bonus – he’s scored four goals and laid on two assists but has just four bonus points to his name.

With Coutinho and Firmino sharing goals and assists and supplying flurries of key passes, Mane’s propensity to take players on and lose possession is punishing his Bonus Point System tally.

Cazorla is key to Arsenal cutting edge…
Predictably, Arsenal’s attacking impetus hit the buffers, just as hordes of FPL managers jumped on Theo Walcott’s accelerating bandwagon.

We’ve been here before . There seems to have been countless Emirates encounters where Arsene Wenger’s side have struggled to break down teams, bereft of an effective plan B.

The fact is, with Santi Cazorla on the pitch, their plan A is so much more likely to deliver the goods.

Walcott and Alexis Sanchez were forced to rely on half chances against Middelsbrough, butting into a mass defence that strangled Arsenal’s best efforts.

Cazorla is the key master that can often unlock such a strategy – we’ve already witinessed it this season with his two assists in the Gameweek 3 in the win over Southampton.

Many will hold Sanchez and Walcott ahead of the trip to Sunderland but Cazorla’s availability could be key to repaying such faith.

We’ve fallen out with Bradley already…
We welcomed his false nine that led to Gylfi Sigurdssson’s Gameweek 8 goal at the Emirates but, a week on, we’ve now changed our opinion on Bob Bradley.

The American reacted to that first defeat with five changes, ousting budget darlings Jordi Amat and Leroy Fer to the bench.

It remains to be seen if this knee jerk reaction is permanent but, in Amat’s case, the argument for his return seems pretty flimsy given the Swans’ clean sheet against Watford.

…but we’re taking a shine to Conte…
Down in West London, Antonio Conte is shaping up to be earn hero status.

Following a Gameweek 6 humbling at the hands of Arsenal, the Italian reshaped his Chelsea side and has since maximised their Fantasy potential.

In Marcos Alonso, he’s given us a wing-back who gets forward to shoot and assists.

He’s somehow getting goals and assists out of N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic.

But, best of all, he may have just revived Eden Hazard’s fortunes to return the Belgian to our radars, just as we consider the possibility of flushing funds from our attacks.

Hazard now has four goals in four starts for club and country and, in the new Chelsea shape, appears to be bombing on with reckless abandon, free of all defensive duties.

The Blues run of three wins with nine goals scored without conceding will now be tested by some rigorous fixtures. Come through that spell and Hazard will drop on our laps for Christmas.

We’ve got Costa all wrong….
We were laying odds on Costa conveniently earning a fifth booking against United – manufacturing an absence against West Ham United for Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie.

But Costa is clearly a changed man.

He’s not only earning us unlikely bonus points but he’s now navigated three Premier League matches without a yellow card.

His personal best is six league outings – if he makes that we all need to buy him by way of honouring the achievement.

Son is not the answer….
Rested at the Hawthorns in Gameweek 9, Son Heung-min was restored against Bournemouth but lasted only an hour, mustering just a single shot with three touches in the box.

Having scored just four in five matches in all competitions, it’s clear that, despite Son’s sparkle, Spurs without Harry Kane still lack the means to hurt opponents.

His return, mooted for the Gameweek 11 north London derby with Arsenal, will cast doubt on Son’s role.

Moussa Sissoko’s seemingly inevitable suspension opens up the gap for Son to remain in the starting XI but we have to question how Mauricio Pochettino will deploy him.

The Alli and Kane double act will surely be revived, leaving Son battling for a start and perhaps in a flank role that will reduce his output.

Karanka needs to build around the Traore’s pace…
Snapped up from relegated Aston Villa having been underused, Aitor Karanka turned to Adama Traore’s blistering pace to drive Middlesbrough’s counter attacks at the Emirates.

It’s a tactic that should have won them three points.

Traore terrorised the Gunners’ defence and saw him fire two of his own efforts on target, only to be denied by Petr Cech’s heroics.

Now the challenge for Karanka is to build his side’s attacking ploys around the winger in the long-term and at the Riverside.

If he can achieve that, we may just have have found another 4.8 prospect.

Heaton is perhaps the only essential…
If Burnley preserve their top-flight status, they will owe a huge debt to their skipper.

We started the season anticipating that Tom Heaton would reward our faith by replicating his 2014/15 form which saw him ranked second, despite suffering relegation; it turns out he may surpass it.

Another seven saves in the win over Everton saw him move to 47, that’s 13 more than any other keeper. Heaton has now returned 12 points from saves alone, ensuring that he goes on presenting outstanding value for his 4.6 price tag.

With so many areas of our squad seemingly in flux, it’s hard to deny Heaton as our season keeper.

Defoe doesn’t fancy another rescue act…
Having declared that Sunderland have moved “backwards” under David Moyes, it’s safe to say that confidence is hardly flowing through Jermain Defoe at present.

With just a single goal in five Premier League outings, his current form has dipped alarmingly to spark FPL sales.

Forthcoming match-ups with Bournemouth and Hull City may just lend him a stay of execution but, a further blank against Arsenal will likely trigger further trades and a slide in price.

The Gunners have six clean sheets in seven in all competitions; it doesn’t look good.

Redmond is worth another look…
He’s buzzed all season, producing performances and winning plaudits that belied a humble FPL output.

Now, with back-to-back goals, Redmond has blinked on the radar once again, with his modest 5.9 price point putting us on alert.

There are two major caveats.

Southampton’s fixtures are somewhat abhorrent. While the Saints have form, St Mary’s meetings with Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton will test and potentially blunt their cutting edge.

Secondly, Sofiane Boufal is a headache – both for us and Claude Puel.

Emerging from the bench at the Etihad with Dusan Tadic making way, we should not expect the Serb to be under threat.

Instead Puel will have to find another solution to work his record signing into the Saints attack and that could see Redmond’s minutes under threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Pretty much everyone who isn't a United fan will be thoroughly enjoying it it's no surprise.. 6 points off the top and a few nightmare games out of the way isn't a time for mass panic.. a couple of performances have been worrying and on the other hand there have been a few top class performances too.. 9 games and one transfer window isn't nearly enough time to correct what has been going on under the last two managers..

Agreed. Though there's never been a doubt in my mind that hiring mourinho will hurt the club though. Haven't seen anything to suggest that's not the case yet. Could take years to recover once he leaves. Just delaying the inevitable changes that need to happen.
Financially things couldn't be better though. Which tends to mean success on the pitch sooner or later.

Yes, but that was when he was Man City's focal point, under Guardiola he's not.

Its dangerous when people judge based on historical stats from previous seasons. It is more useful to look at the current season's statistics for better judgement. Managers and systems were different from last season. Emphasis has also changed within the team Just two weeks ago, many were harping on the GW8 effect for Aguero in the previous seasons but in the end many were complaining about the minus points that they had to suffer as a result. Guess some objectivity is needed at this moment.

Granted that those hat-tricks came in the Champions League where one can argue that the nature of the competition is different from EPL. Ars won 6-0 during CL but couldn't break down a stubborn Boro's defence.

Of the 5 goals that Kun has scored so far this season, 3 of them came from penalties...what concerns me is his strike rate from open goals. Looking at matches recently, he's not in the box as he used to be in previous seasons. He didn't have to do so much tracking back previously. There's no question that Kun's got goals in him. The question is could the extra money be invested elsewhere where other players could be providing better value, e.g. Costa, Lukaku or two extra goal scoring midfielders?

Minutes per chance and shot accuracy are still one of the best in the league, if not the best at the moment.

Kun has the best minutes per chance in the box. However is you look at goal conversion % (not shot accuracy), he (16%) lags behind other strikers such as Costa (25.9%), Lukaku (24%). Walcot is also around 16%.

Cherry picking. I could counter with an example of arsenal failing to score in a champions league game and scoring lots in a premier league game, but it would be equally meaningless.

"Of the 5 goals that Kun has scored so far this season, 3 of them came from penalties..."

He has 11 goals this season. A footballer doesn't care which competition it comes in. For the purposes of predicting future premier league goals, goals in another competition have the same value as premier league goals.

Yes city are in a bad spot at the moment compared to where they were a month ago. It must be affecting confidence. Then there's the benching of aguero. These are different issues. All I'm saying that there is no rational basis to argue aguero is less efficient, less explosive, or worse at scoring than previous seasons.

There's no question that Kun has goals in him, i've commented above. Would it better to use the extra money elsewhere for better value midfields?...Looking at City's team, Pep mostly plays 4-2-3-1, two defensive mids are probably taken by Fernandino and Gundogan. Pep has a penchant for playing without an out-an-out forward in his team. In Barca, it was Messi. In Bayern, it was Lewandoski, Muller or Gotze.

Will Kun start as many matches as the previous seasons? Reckon the next few weeks will give us a better idea. With Kun's injury record the previous seasons, do you think Pep is trying to nurse him through the season?

Just checked, 2 hattys 2 braces and a single in peps first 7 games in charge. I'd say he's as explosive as he's ever been in this system. All the missed penalties are a strange aside.
Naildness is a different issue. Could he be seen as a tactical liability to the manager? It's possible. Way too early to assess, if I had to bet on it I'd bet no.

It's more fun when he's not scoring every week, isn't it? It means there's a decision to make.

I'll be surprised if he scores 4 or 5 in a game this season though with the increased defensive work he's having to do.

I'm not sure why you are so certain that Tadic's place wouldn't be under threat from Boufal and Redmond's would. If Claude Puel sticks with his diamond formation, I don't see why Boufal and Tadic won't compete for minutes, while Austin and Redmond remain the top choice strike force.

Although Tadic has so far been the chief creator for SOT this season (creating a chance every 26.2 minutes), he has been less clinical than Redmond in front of goal, with a goal conversion of 4.3% as compared to 10.7% for Redmond.

Boufal is a creative player more similar to Tadic than Redmond (having a chance to score every 46.9 minutes, but a creating a chance for others every 32.5 minutes) and that was for a Lille team that only averaged 12.6 shots per game as compared to 16.8 for SOT this season.

SOT's issues this season have so far been more about not being clinical enough in front of goal. Their goal conversion is a paltry 9.9% for chances inside the box and 6.3% for chances outside the box, only STO have a weaker goal conversion ratio for chances inside the box.

Once Boufal is fully fit, my working theory is that he'll supply the creativity that Tadic provides along with a greater goal threat. Boufal's goal conversion last season for Lille was 22%, significantly higher than Tadic's current goal conversion and in fact Tadic has only exceeded a 10% goal conversion once during a full season in the Premiership.

Qualitatively Ronald Koeman didn't view Tadic as "undroppable" from the Saints team during the previous two seasons and that was before they had Boufal in their ranks. Also with the Europa League fixtures midweek I don't see why Claude Puel wouldn't want to keep both his chief creators (Boufal and Tadic fit) and decides to start one over the weekend and one midweek.

There is a good chance that I am 100% wrong about this and Redmond's minutes get curtailed, but I just think the situation has significant uncertainty so I am curious as to why you are so confident that Tadic's place isn't under threat.

I hope you're right - I'm happy with my Redmond haul over the past two weeks and would hate to see him go now, it's great to have a 5.9 player with consistent returns if he can keep it up.

Redmond's role up front started off as an experimental project of Claude Puel's to convert him into a forward. Most people made the knee jerk reaction to label the experiment as a flop after he missed a few glaring opportunities in the earlier gameweeks. There are however some very encouraging signs from the underlying statistics in the recent weeks (albeit from a small data set).

During the first 5 gameweeks, Redmond scored 1 goal had a chance to score every 31.8 minutes and created a chance every 34.1 minutes. During gameweeks 6-9, Redmond scored 2 goals, had a chance to score every 28.7 minutes and created a chance every 53.3 minutes. Although the improvement in minutes per chance seems marginal, the most important thing is that during gameweeks 1->5 only 2/3 Redmond's chances were inside the box, while that has jumped to over 90% during gameweeks 6->9, and as a result Redmond's shot conversion has dramatically improved as has his resulting goal conversion. This has however come at a cost from a creativity perspective as he looks to be fashioning fewer chances for his teammates.

Qualitatively in his post-MCI game interview he emphasized the word "composure" when talking about taking his chances. The message from Puel to Redmond seems to be; "rather than snatching at chances outside the box, focus on getting inside the box, stay calm and look to score yourself."

Yes SOT have a tough fixture list ahead, but the improvement in Redmond's underlying stats is very encouraging from a goal scoring perspective.

Redmond seems to be a favourite of Puel's. I think Tadic is more under threat than Redmond.

SOT's upcoming fixtures are pretty tricky over the next few gameweeks and Claude Puel has made no secret of the fact that he wants to ease Boufal into action. My guess is that he makes cameo appearances in both the Premiership and Europa League until the next International break in November, after that point he'll likely start in the Premiership. Other thing to keep in mind with Boufal is that he'll be gone for up to 4 gameweeks during the African Cup of Nations early next year...

Boufal's conversion rate is also much higher than redmond and he is seen as more of a creative goalscorer like hazard than an outright creative player like tadic.

I think he will be used more in a forward role than in a creative mid tip of diamond role so that means either Austin or Redmond lose out.

Perhaps but as CHRISTINA. pointed out, Boufal replaced Tadic in the previous league game, so Tadic's minutes are also at risk.

If you are right and Boufal is deployed as a forward, meaning it is one of Austin or Redmond that lose out, Redmond has so far been utilised in the League far more than Austin, so that speaks in his favour as well.

It'll be interesting to see what happens, I just don't see why FFS seems so sure it will only be Redmond's minutes that are impacted.

Yeah I agree tbh. I actually think it is more likely Austin will miss out as Puel seems to prefer ball playing forwards much like pep. He wants more than just goals from them.

True Austin is the antithesis of a puel forward. Which makes it all the more impressive he forced his way in. He is the only proper goalscorer in that team. He's pretty much undroppable so long as he maintains form.
                  They are all at risk.

If kun is dropable then anyone is. I don't think we know enough about Puel to know what he is likely to do and if scoring goals is enough to keep Austin in the team.

I think it is unlikely he will get dropped in this format but far from an impossibility.

Is there any chance Austin ends up being the fall guy? He's an excellent finisher and traditional number 9, but are you convinced that is what Purl wants? Any chance he goes for a more Liverpool or Arsenal type front three without an out and out front man?

IMO Austin will be the fall guy in the league. As long as Redmond continues to develop as an out and out forward, my guess is Puel will go with Boufal, Redmond and Tadic. He'll probably bring Austin on for Tadic during the last 20-25 minutes during which time he will have Boufal move to the tip of the diamond.

I'm impressed Austin has forced himself into the team, because he wasn't at the start of the season. IMO he just isn't a Puel type player, who tends to prefers more pacy and mobile forwards.

I guess we'll wait and see what happens once Boufal is 100% fit.

I've taken a fairly close interest in saints this season mainly because I have had redmond some the start. I'd be very surprised if he saw much change in his minutes. He has rarely if ever been subbed before austin or long, (when he was first choice up front) that I can remember.

Just watching the saints games redmond is so dangerous and seems so integral to their attacks.

Whilst that fixture run combo looks good, im not generally a fan of preplanned short term transfers and especially not for defenders. In all likelihood you will need your FT elsewhere when the time comes meaning a hit to execute. For 4 games of Fuchs that comes at a cost of 1 ppg.
Getting rid of williams does make sense but id get the player now you would prefer to keep longer term

Same plan here. Leicester don't look a shoe in for shut outs but Fuchs is a beast. Hopeful get at least a 0.1 return on Fuchs if he rises again after this week.

I'd recommend considering Cedric over VVD. The 0.4 you save is a no brainer considering Cedric is a BPS machine. He almost always beats VVD in that system even though Virgil does so well himself.

              This Aguero fella. Any good?

It would be fun to see the most-discussed topic of each week on FFS compiled at the end of the season. Some of my favorites so far:

              Firm or Cout?
              Is Collins nailed?
              Is Rashford nailed?
              Is Allen the new Capoue?
              Should Aguero be dropped?

                Don't forget the classics:

                Is this chasing points?
                Rate my team?
                For a hit?

                ---
And in truth I find more and more this site is geared to make people mess up, overthink and make too many unnecessary transfers endlessly chasing points, team value and a pretty looking team.

The fact is there's nothing of redeeming web content in a weekly article on being disciplined and limiting your transfers.

Totally agree. Can't let this stuff suck you into taking hits all the time. One hit for me this season so far and that was one too many. Got sucked into the Hazarg clamour around GW3 and then he blanked and blanked

              Heaton, Pickford.
              Williams, Stones, Evans, Britos, Amat.
              Sánchez, Walcott, Firmino, Snodgrass*, Fletcher.
              Kun, Lukaku, Defoe.

              1FT; £1.9m ITB.

Thinking Stones to Holebas & Snodgrass to an £8m midfielder for a hit. Any other ideas?

I have the exact amount to do Aguero + Capoue -> Coutinho + Costa (for a -4)

I see the logic behind Aguero not being worth the price this season, but its Aguero - the very idea of removing him from the team sounds absurd when i say it out loud.

Though getting 2 in-form players in return is enticing at this stage

                Any thoughts?

Costa is one booking away from a suspension, so could be risky, but go with your gut.

Not sure why Eddie hasn't given him more minutes. He was electric when fit last season. Poor Ibe can't seem to make his mark so Max deserves his chance.

Was Baines flagged to drop on FPLstats last night? I've just missed out on £0.1mil by mulling over him > Fuchs overnight. Could have sworn he wasn't even close when I went to bed!

West Brom have conceded 5 goals in 4 home games (2 vs Everton, 2 vs West Ham & 1 vs Spurs).

Burnley have conceded 9 goals in 3 away games (3 vs Chelsea, 3 vs Leicester & 3 vs Southampton).

It's really tempting to do Aguero ➡ Ibra with my FT. Thoughts?

                For GW 11:

                A) Williams to Bellerin
                B) Williams to Alonso
                C) Son to Hazard

The more I look at the fixtures for the next 9-10 gameweeks, the more I think the same. The problem then is that I will have a midfield of Sanchez, Walcott, Allen, Firmino and Mane. Sanchez out for Hazard in a few weeks?

Certainly not. West Brom's fixtures improve dramatically pretty soon and he could get just as many saves as Heaton in that time.

I too just read it and selling it right to gain upside in Ranks
But the fixtures are still good Wba Mid, Cpl, Bur in next 4. I will keep monitoring and then decide.
No other options rather than Costa. If we gets his yellow soon might think about it.
Pep can't keep Aguero out in these crucial matches which can impact on Premier League standings. MCY are still fighting to win the league.
Hoping Aguero gets back in form so that the decision is easier

Well as a martian is somebody from mars. I don't think an earthling can ever become a Martian. I think the first martian would be the first person born on Mars and therefore the answer is a generation
