Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Spurs have to settle for a possible Europa League spot while Leicester City win their group with a match to spare on a night of contrasting fortunes for Premier League clubs. Here’s how Matchday 5 of this season’s Champions League campaign played out.

Monaco 2 Spurs 1

It’s a fair indication of a Champions League campaign gone awry when a team’s best player is their goalkeeper.

And so it has proved for Spurs, who yet again had Hugo Lloris (5.5) to thank for delaying their elimination from a competition they have looked ill-suited to this season.

The French international saved a penalty and pulled off a string of superb saves in Monaco, but even he could not stop his side’s Champions League exit with a match still to play.

Lloris was badly let down by a makeshift defence that allowed their hosts 11 shots on target.

Mauricio Pochettino rested the Fantasy Premier League’s most-owned defender, Kyle Walker (6.1), with Kieran Trippier (4.8) replacing him. But it was the impending domestic ban for Danny Rose (5.9) that caused most of the problems.

With Jan Vertonghen (5.7) likely to deputise for Rose in Saturday’s trip to Chelsea, Pochettino decided not to risk the Belgian. Instead, he opted for Eric Dier (5.1) and Kevin Wimmer (4.6) as his centre halves and the improvised back four played like strangers for much of the night.

Harry Winks (4.5) kept his place after scoring in the 3-2 win over West Ham, while Dele Alli (8.1) and Heung-min Son (7.3) returned to the starting XI and the pair combined for Tottenham’s best chance of the night early on.

Kane (10.8) scored on the night – his fifth goal in his last four outings in all competitions, again converting from the penalty spot this time after Alli had been fouled.

The goal came just three minutes after Monaco had taken a deserved lead and, following Kane’s equaliser, the hosts’ winner then arrived a mere 38 seconds later – a fitting demonstration of Tottenham’s defensive shortcomings.

Spurs will now likely drop into the Europa League if they can seal third place in their group with a draw in their final encounter with CSKA Moscow.

Significantly, Pochettino was in a philosphical mood at the exit and the prospects of a Europa League campaign…

“Maybe after five games we do not show enough quality to share two tough competitions in the Premier League and Champions League…It is good for the club to go into the Europa League and try to go further in the competition. I think it’ll be good.”

Last night’s events, while issuing a warning on Spurs’ current form and confidence, will be welcomed by those Fantasy eyeing up Kane and his team-mates.

There’s no question that a continued Champions League campaign would have impacted on the prospects of Kane and certainly full-backs Walker and Rose. Pochettino would now seem likely to prioritise the Premier League campaign, hopefully keeping the rotation of his key assets to a minimum.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Trippier, Dier, Wimmer, Rose, Wanyama, Dembélé (Eriksen 64), Alli, Winks (Sissoko 74), Son (Janssen 64), Kane.
Subs not used: Vorm, Walker, Vertonghen, Nkoudou.

Leicester City 2 Club Brugge 1

While Spurs were drowning on the Mediterranean coast, things continued to go swimmingly in land-locked Leicester.

First-half goals from Shinji Okazaki (5.7) and a Riyad Mahrez (9.0) penalty won the Foxes the group as Claudio Ranieri’s charges continued to exceed all expectations in Europe.

The Italian made just one change to the side that lost at Watford. Midfielder Andy King (4.8) came in for Daniel Amartey (4.5) as Islam Slimani (8.3) recovered from a groin problem to keep his place.

That continuity helped Leicester dominate from the get-go. Christian Fuchs (5.4) provided the cross for the opener and Marc Albrighton (5.0) was fouled for the penalty as Leicester outclassed their winless opponents.

It was rather different after the break.

The Foxes conceded for the first time in Europe this season as the visitors finally showed some spirit and at 2-1, there were some nervy moments for the hosts’ defence to overcome.

But Leicester missed good chances to seal the deal on the break and can now finally concentrate on the league – for all the right reasons – until well into the New Year, as Ranieri was keen to stress post-match.

“In the Premier League, we are very close to the relegation and we must play at the same level as the Champions League because when we want to do something we achieve something. We must concentrate on the Premier League now.”

Leicester City XI: Zieler, Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez (Schlupp 68), Drinkwater, King, Albrighton (Amartey 78), Vardy, Okazaki (Gray 68).
Subs: Hamer, Hernández, Musa,Ulloa.

After Spurs' loss last night, even considering Costa to rub salt in the wounds of a tired/demoralised Spurs team..?

Would consider Costa the "safe" option. Consistent, but rarely explosive. Liv mid / Sanchez may blank, but could also deliver a 20 haul.

He has a couple of tough fixtures up next, but surprised people aren't interested in Stanislas as a cheap 4th mid?

His individual attacking stats are good, and in the last 6 GWs Bournemouth are top 6 for total shots, shots in box, big chances and mins per chance...

Just looking at this right now, he'd be my top Bou pick. Looking in that bracket, for someone to play and use Capoue as cover when their fixture is tough. Looking at Stoke, Burnley, Middlesbrough so not great alternatives - Shaqiri or Antonio in my price range for 4th mid, or invest more in my planned cheapy 3rd striker which atm will be Anichebe

Which is the better route to Kane next week?

    A. Aguero + Lukaku -> Ibra/Costa + Kane (could do Walcott to Siggy at some point + Williams to Alonso)
    B. Walcott + Lukaku -> Snodgrass + Kane (leaves only 0.8m to upgrade defence so maybe VVD, Williams to Alonso, Cedric at some point)

    Heaton, Pickford
    VVD, Williams, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Hazard, Mane, Firmino, Walcott, Fletcher
    Aguero, Lukaku, Austin

personally in 3 GW time (when Grant is probably now benched and Pickford has Chelsea) I'll be finding an extra 1m and upgrading Grant to Forster, having Pickford in reserve.

Saints have a long run of very favourable fixtures and he'll be my GK for a while, probably lose 1m from defence or midfield to accommodate.

No Lamela. Winks should play after his good debut vs WHAM

    3. Freddie Cutecat
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 7 months ago

I doubt Lamela will be fit in time. But I think this is very hard to speculate on at this moment due to Spurs recent poor results.

I would not be surprised to see a 3 at the back formation as they played against Arsenal, but I am not sure who would play LWB in this case given Davies and Rose unavailability- whether Poch would consider moving Walker over to the left and playing Trippier, or even playing someone attacking like Nkoudou there in a Moses type role.

I think Eriksen will start given he was on the bench against Monaco (despite his poor form). He did actually play well against Arsenal in the 3-5-2 formation. And we also should not discount Winks given his West Ham performance, but I do feel both Dembele and Wanyama is overly defensive in a 3 at the back formation.

Like I said its a massive guessing game, but I will go:
      Lloris
      Dier Wimmer Vertonghen
      Trippier Wanyama Dele Walker
      Eriksen
      Kane Son

      1. Hurricane Gilbert
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 7 months ago

Good guess, I think! Spurs are really having a hard time now. But everyone thought they would be humiliated by Arsenal, and they performed pretty well with that formation.

        1. Freddie Cutecat
          • 7 Years
          7 years, 7 months ago

Yeah agree with that. Very hard to guess, but I feel it's their best chance at nullifying the Chelsea threat and getting the best out of Eriksen, who is so so important to Spurs creativity.

I think Poch will realise that the key weakness in the Chelsea is their left hand side with Alonso, not just because he gets so far forward, but because he is quite slow and has been shown up against pacey wingers like Bolasie. Also, with Cahill at LCB, he could struggle a bit more under the press with pace as he has against the likes of Sanchez.

The only real pace in Spurs squad (other than N'koudou) is Rose, Walker and Trippier- so I think there is a good chance the latter two start- or even N'koudou could start in Trippier's place, with Walker on his natural right hand side.

I don't like Phillips long term as my fourth mid, but the max budget I can stretch getting rid of Allen is 6.6M and no one else is jumping out at me.

I had thought of him and am tempted, especially by pens and free kicks. unfortunately 0.1m from getting both him and Costa though.

I wouldn't bother with Phillips, their fixtures already turn in a couple of gws. But I don't have an answer for you as I'd want someone like Siggy at 0.6 more

    Bottomed out...

    Whatcha reckon?

    A) Collins -> Nyom (save 2nd FT)
    B) Defoe -> Anichebe (save 2nd FT)

Collins needs to go, but Nyom feels risky and probably isn't worth a FT. B) leaves me with plenty of options next week and cash for a better Collins replacement. Would need Amat to start though....

    Cech
    Clyne, Stones, Amat
    Sanchez, Firmino, Coutinho, Walcott
    Aguero, Defoe, Austin

    Pickford, Capoue, Collins, Kone
    Bank 0.1m, 2FT

wouldn´t loose Defoe for Anichebe before christmas period. Anichebe will most certainly get rotated with Borini return imminent, no?

      B

Free up funds to get better midfield or defensive option.
Alonso ? Get him in before he goes to 6.5 plus
I reckon hes gna be top scorer in DEF this year

Yea looks good. But you should look to upgrade either Capoue or Allen soon. Not that convinced with either of them to be the 4th mid.

Even though Yaya is not included in UCL squad. There is chance he might get rotated when City play another premier league game in midweek.
Wait how Pep will field his player. Otherwise, you will be wasting your FT again to transfer him out like Gundagon

Dembele and Diego doesn't really see eye to eye with each other. Rumours are that Dembele already have starter poking Diego on Facebook. Could be a eye-catching dirty match-up on saturday, just saying!

Heard the Spurs players still talk about the game last season and are itching for revenge. No doubt they will be up for it.

    Holebas Pieters Mcauley
    Hazard Coutinho Shaqiri Son
    Aguero Lukaku Defoe

    Jaku Amat Gundogan Smith

You and me both. I've contemplated dropping Sanchez and Aguero. Value isn't there.
