The Stock Check – Gameweek 14 – Sunday

Roberto Firmino draws a blank as Sadio Mane and Emre Can plunder the points prior to Liverpool’s late collapse at the Vitality. Later in the day, Zlatan Ibrahimovic continues his improved form as Romelu Lukaku’s stock plummets further…

On The Rise

Sadio Mane
Liverpool’s top scorer took his tally to seven goals for the season after slotting home the opener at the Vitality Stadium.

The second most transferred in player for Gameweek 14 due to team-mate Philippe Coutinho’s injury, Mane netted away from Anfield for the first time since the season opener at Arsenal and also chipped in with an assist against the Cherries.

Although he’s set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, the packed hectic schedule could still see Mane rack up the points.

Between Gameweek 15-20, which takes us all the way up to January 2, he faces West Ham, Middlesbrough, Everton, Stoke and Sunderland, in addition to hosting Man City’s porous defence on Boxing Day.

However, having limped off this afternoon, though, his fitness will need to be monitored ahead of a busy December.

Emre Can
Handed a place in our Spot the Differentials article, the German continued his impressive form with a goal and assist this afternoon.

Can has now served up three strikes and an assist in the last five Gameweeks, yet, despite coming in at a mere 4.9 in FPL, sat in less than 2% of squads prior to the weekend.

Although Adam Lallana returned to action off the bench, Can’s contribution suggests that he’s likely to retain his starting berth ahead of Georginio Wijnaldum – the German has now started each of the last seven Gameweeks.

Divock Origi
It’s three goals in as many matches for the Liverpool frontman after a superbly taken strike in the Reds’ surprise loss at Bournemouth.

After emerging from the bench to notch against Sunderland last week, Origi has been rewarded with back-to-back starts in all competitions and also netted in the midweek cup win over Leeds United.

With Coutinho sidelined for a number of weeks, the Belgian’s form may well have cemented him a place in Jurgen Klopp’s XI for the time being.

Given that Mane is set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, Origi – at just 6.5 in FPL – will be pushing to retain that starting place over the next couple of months, although Daniel Sturridge, once fit, will clearly be a factor.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Capitalising on an error by Maarten Stekelenburg, the United frontman took his tally to six goals in as many matches across all competitions.

Having netted four times in the first 10 Gameweeks, Ibrahimovic has finally started to translate the underlying numbers into Fantasy returns, firing four goals in his subsequent three league outings.

With the need for a Sergio Aguero replacement a priority, United’s schedule from Gameweek 16 hands them seven very favourable fixtures (cpl, wba, SUN, MID, whu, sto, HUL) in the following eight to promote the Swede’s appeal.

Considering that Juan Mata dropped to the bench despite the absence of the suspended Wayne Rooney, Ibra looks the safest bet for those backing Jose Mourinho’s men to flourish.

Nathan Ake
A late winner against Liverpool made it two goals in three appearances since being handed a first start in Gameweek 12.

Ake’s recent displays hand Eddie Howe a real headache once he has a full quota of defenders to choose from – with Charlie Daniels ruled out again today, Adam Smith and Simon Francis were fielded as the full-backs.

Should Ake continue in the first XI, a price of 4.2 in FPL would certainly boost his appeal as one of the cheapest active defenders available.

Ryan Fraser
A 15-point return from a 36 minute appearance from the bench, Fraser turned today’s game for Bournemouth. Priced at 4.9 in the FPL, it remains to be seen if the young scot can now cement a starting role for Eddie Howe’s men to become a factor in our season.

Fraser replaced former Fantasy target Junior Stanislas who hobbled off with a knee injury, labelled as “serious” by the Cherries boss according to early reports.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Having recovered from a calf complaint, the Brazilian was shifted onto the left flank to accommodate Origi through the middle.

Firmino’s failure to play a part in any of Liverpool’s three goals proved hugely frustrating for his 18% FPL owners – a run of three successive blanks is his longest of the season.

With cash freed up by the Sergio Aguero suspension, many are looking for a way to own both Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard in the centre of the park and Firmino could well be earmarked as a potential fall guy.

Nonetheless, Liverpool’s upcoming schedule suggests that getting rid at this point still has the potential to backfire.

Liverpool’s Defence
Back-to-back clean sheets against Southampton and Sunderland had suggested that Liverpool’s rearguard may finally be worth considering.

The loss of Joel Matip proved costly, though, as Klopp’s side fell apart in the final half-hour against the Cherries.

Incredibly, Liverpool have conceded nine times in the three matches that the Cameroon international has missed – they’ve shipped the same number of goals in the 11 league matches with Matip on board.

If our faith in the likes of Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren is to be rewarded, the Reds’ summer signing needs to shrug off his ankle injury as soon as possible.

Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian’s alarming slump in form shows little sign of abating – he failed to produce a single attempt against United earlier today.

Adding injury to insult, he now looks to have falling down the penalty pecking order after Leighton Baines stepped up to slot home a spot-kick and seal a 1-1 stalemate.

Second only to Philippe Coutinho for transfers out last week, Lukaku, with one goal in six now, has continued to shed owners since the weekend deadline – he faces clashes with Arsenal and Liverpool in the next three.

Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley
The pair dropped to the bench as Ronald Koeman attempted to address a dire run of form that had harvested one win in Everton’s previous eight matches.

After starting each of the first nine, Jagielka has omitted from the starting XI in two of the last five, with his role as a regular now looking in question under the Dutchman.

Barkley had started all but one of the first 13 Gameweeks but failed to earn pitch time off the bench as the Toffees looked to chase the match, with Koeman instead turning to Gerard Deulofeu and Enner Valencia as substitutes.

With the upcoming Christmas period all about ensuring our benches are well-stocked, the Toffees exodus looks set to expand beyond just Lukaku.

Owners of Seamus Coleman and Yannick Bolasie will also be mulling over their options after both picked up knocks and were forced off.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      I went for Origi.

Liverpool have 2 great fixtures coming up and Origi is a great differential.

As long as he stays the main striker for the next couple game i think it's worth it.

    GK: Heaton & Pickford

DF: Walker, Koscielny, Lovren, Holebas, Brunt

MF: Ozil, Firmino, Siggurdson, Allen, Capoue

    FW: Aguero, Kane, Austin

    Pick or advise:
    A) Lovren + Ozil + Aguero > Alonso + Sanchez + Costa (-8)
    B) Allen + Ozil + Aguero > Fer + Sanchez + Costa (-8)
    C) Lovren + Allen + Aguero > Alonso + Hazard + Defoe (-8)

I like A), but it does mean playing one of Allen or Fer this week. How much does it leave in the bank to upgrade them next week? Arguable you could also delay the Lovren > Alonso move a week and save a -4.

Bit of help pls..obviously had to remove Kun but I would like City coverage, only player I would consider is KDB. To fit him in I would need to transfer out Firminio, and Alli which would give me:

    Heat/Pick
    Alonso,Walker,Smith,McAuley(Amat)
    KDB,Sanchez,Hazard,Lallana,Allen
    Costa,Kane,Anichibe.

    Good idea or keep ???

I'd leave it. But then I'm keeping Gundogan for a bit - for just in case coverage - which is probably a mistake.

      Good morning all!

Price changes are killing me this season, I miss the comfort of being able to wait until at least midweek games have finished.

Has anyone else been paying more attention to them versus last year? Are they going up quicker? Is there simply more active players?

I think they are going up quicker because of what you say - more active players and FPL on social media has contributed hugely to that.

It's a very aggressive season on the transfer market. Building TV and swapping/getting as many big hitters as possible has been the way to go, and I see no reason for that to stop. Unless you already have got the big hitters who have earned a temporary essential status, you need to move quick to not be priced out.

I believe there are a higher percentage of educated players, at least in how the price changes work, and this is affecting the nimber of transfers earlier in the gameweek. I don't think there has been any significant change to how the changes are calculated.

I would say the tweets are helping but something has changed in the price change algorithm. Same here I used to wait till midweek or Friday morning to make a transfer, now I have to do it before and risk an injury!

Vicious cycle. Pple see movement, think they need to act quick before a rise, end up increasing the transfer rate.

I've been saying this for a while. FPL should lock transfers till a GW ends. Even in the case of festive fixtures. Often it'll be a few hours past deadline and ur already worried about the next transfer

It's been insane and ruthless this year. I think it's a combination of more people playing creating more knee jerk reactions, then people like us who know about the power of price rises then reacting to those reactions and getting players in!

I've already done my 2 transfers yet again (Sanch and Austin for Kun and Allen) - very weird this season, I've felt really rushed compared to other years to get in and get the value asap.

It's caused by downfall as well so far; my decision to get Hazard in over Sanchez to cover the price rises (aided and abetted by Mr Sutherns on the fpl show, of course 😉 jk) has lost me so many points.

In short, very stark cost benefit contrast to the current behaviour patterns lol

I'm hoping they calm down a bit as more teams become dead but at the moment it is crazy, they've done a good job of retaining interest this year.

Costa is going to be 1.5 more expensive than his starting price before long.

I thought my TV at 104.4 was good but saw someone with 106.0 knocking around here before.

As teams become dead the price-rise threshold drops - so this (in theory) shouldn't have any effect.

DF: Walker, Koscielny, Lovren, Holebas, Brunt

MF: Ozil, Firmino, Siggurdson, Allen, Capoue

              FW: Aguero, Kane, Austin

              Pick or advise:
              A) Lovren + Ozil + Aguero > Alonso + Sanchez + Costa (-8)
              B) Allen + Ozil + Aguero > Fer + Sanchez + Costa (-8)
              C) Lovren + Allen + Aguero > Alonso + Hazard + Defoe (-8)

                Heaton Pickford
                Walker Cedric Holebas McAuley Amat
                Sanchez Firmino Siggy Allen Capoue
                Costa Kane Austin

Already made my FT this week (Aguero > Costa)

I have enough money for a Allen > Eriksen swap - feeling like my 4th midfielder spot is too weak

A- Walcott and Kun to Sanchez and Nacho
B- Walcott, Kun and Clyde to Sanchez, Costa and Ake

                    That's what I did.

                    Walcott + Kun >> Sanchez + Costa.

Took Costa out to bring in Kane for the weekend's games... should have taken out Kun to begin with 😉

Did a -8 last week that payed of (Coutinho Sterling Stones Lukaku 3 points -> Kane(C) Sanchez Can Cedric 61 points.. almost perfect!

                  Now I'm considering doing a -4..

Already done Aguero -> Costa, is it worth a hit to do Pieters(ars) -> Chelsea-defender?

Pieters has crap fixtures and will likely get less than 2 points next week?

                  Anyone braving a non-Sanchez team?

Easiest ways to fund him for me are:

                  A) Firmino+Walcott to Sanchez+Philips or Moses or Can

                  B) Ibra+Walcott to Defoe/Nacho + Sanchez

Not sure I particularly like either but will likely go with A if either.

Can afford a couple more rises but if he triple rises and any of the other players change it could cause issues.

Other issue is if I don't get him in this week I don't think I want him until after City...even if they are still conceding.

                      A) with Can looks alright tbh Andy. I'm a bobby owner and know how frustrating owning him can be - yesterday was the third time this year Liverpool have scored 3 or more and he's not been involved - but he can really do the business, too!

Def coming under consideration for removal for me, though... Can looking decent enough for the budget cost

                    I have a front eight of -

                    Sanchez - Hazard - Firmino - Walcott - Allen
                    Barrow - Kane - Austin

Would Barrow to Iheanacho for -4 be a good move? Bit worried about Allen's game time and I want a safe alternative.

Yes to Nacho. Allen can be your 5th altho you may want the funds bavk off him later with a downgrade to a playing 4.3/4.4. I've gone with De Roon as Ive only once played 3-5-2. Given.me another .7m to invest in def.

Yeah I saw that, before the weekend his xG was same as Walcott interestingly enough.

I suppose with FPL we have to take assists into account as well

Mr. Riley only takes into account shots on target. Accurate only in larger sample sizes for predictions

                              Nothing.

Paul Riley is the only one using just shots on target. Other modelers give all shots equal weight age whether on target or not.

Frankly I don't see the need to exclude shots off target as I would rather my player missed the post by 2 yards than hit straight at the keeper

Might be. Might not. One thing you need to understand is xG won't be 100% accurate and at a player level can be a little of sometimes. Also , different models have different xG totals for same shots.

Coming back to Costa , he has definitely over performed this season in xG but he has done so throughout his career. Even last season. His xA is healthy too at 0.25 per 90. Not to mention that he is in a hot streak which has shown no signs of cooling yet with the easiest possible fixtures in the next 6.

Where can I see xG model (player wise links I mean, not Caley's) - personally not a fan of Riley's SoT approach.

                      Hi guys

Which of those options would you fancy best for the month of December (dropping Kun)

                      A - Origi
                      B- Carroll
                      C- Iheanacho

                        A, C, B

I was tempted by Iheanacho too but i think Liverpool have better Fixtures and are still scoring freely.

If i have transferred in a player earlier in the week, and if i change my mind somehow and wish to transfer him out again in the same week and bring somebody else in, would my previous transfer count?
                      Please help.

I transferred in Austin to avoid Kun's price drop and given Soton has excellent fixtures coming up.
Now i think Origi or Defoe would have been better options.

Stick with Austin for this GW at least. Great fixture

Best replacement for Allen for up to 7.2m? I was thinking Can.

Son a good shout too. But he doesn't have a very good next fixture and he'll be 7.3 by the time it comes around.

Maybe. Having same problem with finding alternatives for Allen/Gundo (not v keen on Siggy). Might just wear it & upgrade defender instead.

                        To the Mods,

I think you guys should start looking at xG when you're making articles. It really is a very good parameter to judge how good players r, and if they r over or under-performing. You could even talk a bit about it on the Scoutcast. Trust me, in a year or 2 that will be the most analysed stat for all attackers and teams

                            What is xG

                              Expected goals.

It records the quality of shots that a team / player has and whether they are expected to score. Then you can see whether they're scoring better than the amount they've had or whether they're due a few more (if they keep up the xG).

I think that's a very broad explanation anyway. If you want to know more - http://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com/2015/4/10/8381071/football-statistics-expected-goals-michael-caley-deadspin

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (12) has more goals than Deigo Costa (11) this season so far.

500 mins more. Thats sowhere around 40% more of the minutes that Costa played.

Really regretting getting Nacho over Defoe. Think Defoe is a great captain choice for Swansea game.

Come Nacho, prove me wrong (right?).

Suddenly found myself with 3M extra cash...

                          Foster, Pickford
                          Alonso, Morgan, Evans, Pieters, Amat
                          Sanchez, Firmino, Eriksen, Zaha, Fletcher
                          Kane, Costa, Austin

                          Do I:

                          A) Firmino->Hazard
                          B) Zaha - Siggy

Just seen Rojo's challenge on Lukaku last night. He should be given a retrospective ban.

You have to ask yourself what Michael Oliver was looking at if he though it wasn't worthy of a red.

If those studs connected with an ankle it would have been the end of Lukaku. Really unsporting from Rojo.
