Moving Target

Moving Target – Marco Silva

After parting company with Mike Phelan on Tuesday night, Hull City moved quickly to appoint his replacement, with former Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos boss Marco Silva announced as the Tigers new head coach yesterday.

Silva has agreed on a deal until the end of the season, and will take charge for the club’s FA Cup third round tie against Swansea City tomorrow.

The 39-year-old takes over at the KCOM Stadium with Hull rooted to the bottom of the table, three points adrift of Crystal Palace in 17th.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Silva insisted he can help the club avoid relegation back to the Championship:

“It is a really difficult challenge because at the moment the league position is bad and the results are not the best so it is important that we change this situation… There are things that we need to improve. Our organisation and concentration in games is important… If I didn’t believe I would not have come here. I believe we can help this team to stay in the Premier League.”

The History

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Silva spent most of his playing career in the lower divisions as a right-back.

He only made two Primeira Liga appearances, one for Belenenses, and the other for Campomaiorense, before ending his career with a six-year stint at Estoril.

In June 2011, immediately following his retirement, Silva was appointed as the director of football at Estoril.

But during the early part of the campaign, Silva took over the managerial role and guided the club to the league title and promotion back to the Primeira Liga, following a seven-year hiatus.

The 2012/13 campaign was another historic one for Estoril, who finished fifth in the Primeira Liga, securing a place in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

Incredibly, Silva would go one better the following season, steering Estoril to a fourth-place finish, and automatic qualification for the Europa League.

Those successes convinced Sporting Lisbon to appoint Silva as their new manager on a four-year contract in May 2014.

Silva would only spend one season at Sporting, though, with a third-place finish in the league, and a Portuguese Cup triumph not enough to prevent him getting sacked in June 2015.

In July 2015, Silva signed a two-year deal to take over at Greek club Olympiakos.

Silva guided Olympiakos to an historic 17 consecutive domestic victories, before eventually winning the league title with six matches remaining.

Silva resigned in June 2016, though, citing personal reasons.

The Prospects

With Hull having taken only six points from the last 48 on offer, there’s no doubt Silva has a huge task on his hands to preserve the club’s Premier League status.

It has been reported he will have some money to spend, though, with Tigers vice-chairman Ehab Allam stating the club is working hard ”to deliver some key additions” during the transfer window.

Silva inherits a side that has predominantly been playing in either a 3-5-1-1, 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 system, with the players that Phelan had at his disposal appearing best suited to those formations.

Long-term injuries to Moses Odubajo, Alex Bruce and, more recently, Will Keane, left Phelan with a very small group to work with.

Silva will have to make do without the services of key first-team players Ahmed Elmohamady and Dieumerci Mbokani over the next few weeks as they depart for the Africa Cup of Nations.

In terms of tactics, Silva is known to prefer a 4-2-3-1 system, but given the lack of natural wide players on the books at the KCOM Stadium, it will be interesting to see whether he adopts that formation from the off.

Currently, only Robert Snodgrass, Markus Henriksen, Adama Diomande, Shaun Maloney and perhaps Ryan Mason appear capable of filling the attacking midfield spots, with only Snodgrass and Diomande having made any sort of impression so far this term.

Silva does have some decent options in central midfield to work with, though, with Jake Livermore and Sam Clucas perhaps best suited to playing in a midfield two, although Tom Huddlestone, Mason and David Meyler all provide plenty of Premier League experience.

The 39-year-old also likes his full-backs to push forward and offer plenty of width, and in Elmohamady and Andrew Robertson, he has two players who appear perfectly suited to those philosophies.

But when facing the likes of Arsenal in the Champions League during his time with Olympiakos, Silva was known to favour a pragmatic approach, happy to see his team concede possession.

Given the gulf in quality between Hull’s squad and some of the top clubs in the Premier League, this is certainly something which we may see continued during his time in England.

Regardless, it is clear that, in whatever system he chooses, Snodgrass will remain key to Hull’s survival chances.

The Scotland international has totalled an impressive seven goals and two assists so far this season, and given Silva is noted for his fondness of set-pieces as an attacking weapon, Snodgrass’ deadly delivery should be utilised to its fullest under the new boss.

Michael Dawson already has three goals to his name this season, despite missing the first few months of the campaign due to injury, while Curtis Davies, Harry Maguire and Abel Hernandez all provide reasonable threats from set-plays.

With the glaring need for some extra creativity and pace in the attacking midfield areas, and a proven goalscorer up front, there’s no doubt Hull will need to bring in one or two fresh faces in order to have a reasonable chance of staying up.

Silva would seem likely to play a major part in this process. Upon retirement, his main brief in his first non-playing role at Estoril was to assess the needs of the squad and identify transfer targets – a task he fulfilled exceptionally well.

The Tigers have been linked with a move for Romanian attacking midfielder Alexandru Maxim, who has scored two goals in 18 appearances for German second tier outfit Stuttgart this season, while the same report suggest they could be interested in bringing Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings to the club.

Hull were also linked with former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o during the final few days of Phelan’s reign, although that was dismissed by the then Hull boss.

From a Fantasy perspective, it’s only been Snodgrass who has really made an impression amongst the current roster, and unless Silva can tighten things up at the back, bringing the likes of Dawson and Robertson into the frame as budget options, that’s likely to remain the case.

The new boss faces a home encounter against Bournemouth in his first league match in charge, which is then followed by an incredibly difficult run of fixtures (che, mun, LIV, ars).

The tough schedule should allow us to assess what we can expect from Silva’s Hull side then, with investment more likely from Gameweek 26 onwards, when the fixture list eases considerably.

Silva clearly faces a huge challenge at Hull, but his CV is pretty impressive given he’s only been coaching for less than seven years, and doesn’t feature any glaring failures.

He’ll hope that winning mentality will rub off on the players, then, but Silva, who has been referred to in his native Portugal as “the new Mourinho,” has never had to deal with the pressures of a relegation battle, let alone the scrutiny of managing in one of Europe’s top leagues.

Hull will certainly hope he can make a similar impact to that of Mauricio Pochettino when he arrived at Southampton, but for every Pochettino, there’s also a Remi Garde, and unless quality is brought in during the transfer window, it’s difficult to see Silva being able to stem the tide at the KCOM Stadium.

before last GW i had Amat, had enough of his uselessness and was looking to buy a cheap MID defender, it was between Friend and Chambers (both priced at 4,4). I chose Friend (I watched their match), Barragan got injured and Friend replaced him and played great on the left wing, made some very accurate crosses but the MID attackers couldnt finish. I hope that performence convinces Karanka to start my Friend

So Berahino has refused to sign a new contract at WBA. I'm not sure if he realises, but this constant drama surrounding him and his contract situation probably doesn't make him any more appealing to other clubs.

          I know, still rankles

I think he's the perfect fit for a move to China to be honest - WBA would gladly take the extra cash.

Unless you're Balotelli, and at the top right corner of the crazy/talented graph, if you're still like this at 23 - you're really not going to get anywhere

It's been that sort of a season

Yeah, I may have the completely wrong read of the guy, but to me it seemed like he wanted the big move for the money and not the chance at winning titles etc. So really, China/other money leagues could suit everyone if a team actually come in for him.

He sort of stands as a mile marker for me. The last of the breed of primadonnas that thought they could force smaller clubs hands into up selling them to larger clubs. That used to be standard from what I recall but doesn't seem so prevalent any longer (although offloading fools gold to China is an interesting trend), guess there is just too much TV money at stake these days.

I was just wondering if they'd try to ditch him to a Chinese team. In fact, he seems possibly like the type who would chase that giant wage.

totally agree. At this point, they would be crazy not to sell him since he simply walks at the end of the season anyway.

Why would you want to sign anything with a club that doesn't care about you? Yes. The contract scenario with him has been bad on both sides.. the club should have sold him a long time back and cash in. Wba are now trying to destroy his career.

      1. Somalion
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

I disagree. He built up a high opinion of himself following some good play, tried to force WBA into selling him and they refused. Subsequently he's had a strop and is acting like little more than a petulant child. There are better ways to leave a club, and while WBA should have cashed in they may have felt him really important to the team at that stage, which is fair given they hold his contract.

I'm not saying he should sign for them now, but he needs to realise if he doesn't get a move this January (and so far there hasn't seemed to be much interest) he could damage his career. At least if he was still playing he'd be getting the attention of other clubs.

        1. Chenku╰☆╮
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 5 months ago

Agree with you that he needed to man up. But now signing a new contract would be suicide. He needs to find a club any club even championship for a year and perform and earn a place back in the league.

          1. Somalion
            • 14 Years
            7 years, 5 months ago

That's his issue though, he reckons he's too good for West Brom which is fine, I'm not going to argue that because he is talented, but will he take a further step down to the Championship now?

Imagine if he doesn't leave this transfer window because nobody he deems good enough come in for him, then he's stuck not playing until Summer. I agree with you he can't sign for WBA now, damage is done, but I don't see where he goes from there if he wants a big move.

I do wonder if his agent has anything to do with this whole saga ( I don't know but wouldn't be surprised). This is a prime example of the consequence of there being so much cash sloshing around in the PL. Greedy environment.

        I'd almost guarantee it.

(Most) Agents are cancerous to young, talented players. Problems like United have had recently with Martial, lots of that is being generated by his agent constantly telling the media "Oh we have offers from Sevilla, maybe we'll have to make a decision" etc. There are some who genuinely care about the player, but they are becoming few and far between.

Because you can WC in a bunch of players that are playing 2 fixtures instead of 1, I don't think why that's better needs to be explained.

Couple that with triple captain or bench boost and you could get a massive green arrow.

I think I'm just going to keep him in. After Cheslea have those two tought fixtures (liv & ARS) they go on a ridiculously good run.

      No.

Too expensive and inhibits you getting a decent core of starting defs and mids. Nearly £2m more than Costa, for example, and in no way is his returns this season worth that difference in your overall budget.

People take it as some kind of personal slight when you point this out, but its just simple economics.

I agree he is too expensive. I feel very exposed not having him for some reason. Partly because I don't think there are any other City players worth having. KDB has been fairly poor FPL wise for a while now...

If I was WC on a 343 I'd go Lukaku over Kun with Costa and Ibra. Then if Kun starts to motor its the easiest route to upgrade from. But the Kun situation needs to settle first for the outlay...

I need to make up some ground in a very competitive ML, so I brought him in as one of the biggest possible differential opportunities currently out there. Also realized I needed to ship out some poorly performing defenders. But agree with Nomar, there is a downside to his price. I think if you go in with eyes open, you can gauge whether it has been a good strategy over the course of the next series of matches and if need be, ship him for someone cheaper if it is clear he is now on the decline.

    7. Parm
      • 12 Years

I like him as a differential over Costa. Costa's 6 points a week really don't hurt all that much if you have a decent enough team and whilst Costa is 'value' I don't see him winning many weeks for you over the top 10k player.
Aguero is capable of a hat-trick in any game and a prime captain choice, he's a potential difference maker and as someone sat at 80k I want that to break the template. If I was 1k then fair enough, i'd probably sit pretty with Costa but I need to make waves.

Yes, I am in a completely similar situation and therefore had the same logic. I shored up my defense this week so I hope that will help given the amount of matches still to come. That's probably the biggest lesson I've learned so far this season, can't ignore poorly performing defenders for too long. But I'm having fun and definitely looking at the current situation as an interesting challenge since it requires really looking hard at the cost/benefit options of differentials vs the template. Parm, you might also want to consider Bobby F's premium striker rotation strategy. I'm intrigued by it and so far the results have been decent. (last time I will pimp this)

I've seen it, i'm sticking to my guns with Ibra/Kun though. I actually sold Costa this gameweek for Defoe to fund a move for Alli and my defense stinks(http://i.imgur.com/jLCGPHy.png). Might even move on Defoe(or Hazard) soon and make a move for Danny Rose.

should be a little bit, otherwise your just playing the WC at the same time as everyone else with a bad rank, and not gaining much ground.
Differentiator posted a great write up as to why there's not much appeal of using WC for these DGW's due to the lower teams involved, and people likely to be already stocked up on cit chelsea and united players etc anyway, could achieve this with a simple few hits.

          1. Now I'm Panicking
            • 9 Years
            7 years, 5 months ago

Meh - I didn't agree with Differentiator either 😉 There's no way of telling who is going to be in the DGWs and when at the moment - you are best to hold on to your WC for now and keep your options open, regardless of OR. You can always do something different later on (e.g. last year the majority WC'ed GW33, whereas WC GW36 was the "differential" option, and turned out better for most.

well, arguments for both i suppose, i'm happy to just take hits and they work out half price in a way as they'll play twice, and i'd only bring in the certain guarenteed players to likely do well, and another problem people then have is shipping out players not needed AFTER the DGW.

too late as i've already played it, and glad i have really, sick of trailing to medicre teams above me in my ML, make ground up now and i'll likely stay ahead.

I never used the wildcard for DGW, I use it to get ahead, then when DGW show up, you usually have a lot of time to get the players anyway without taking hits (won my leagues the last 7 years)

      1. Salah’s Sonnet
        • 12 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

in full agreement with this Daniel, it's what i've done too and won last three ML seasons, i use it to gain ground, then with simple careful planning slowly easing in players before the DGW (as soon as who's known will be in it), then just load up, simple, half price hits also 🙂

Got a spare £0.1m on your wildcard? Get Marc Muniesa over Amat/Holgate.

Muniesa is back in training after injury and with Diouf(playing as a RWB) going to AFCON, if Stoke intent on continuing their 3-5-2 system then I see Glen Johnson going from CB -> RWB and Muniesa slotting into CB.

didnt captain him when he produced
            2
            -1
            1
            -1

but the thing is with those captain scores doesn't matter these blanks to me
can't expect him to always produce even at 12.8

Don't want anyone under 6.8 🙁 Between Gray, Rondon and Wilson and don't want any of them

Downgrade elsewhere and get defoe, giroud or lukaku or get a cheapo like barnes and go 5 in midfield. You're allowed to take hits you know.

If I didn't rage transfer Cedric out on Monday night I would 🙂 It'd be a -8 and no one I really want to lose

There's no point hanging onto Origi now. Just get rid.

Look on the bright side. Only 30 mins pitch time til the next Sturridge injury though.

    Pulling the WC trigger...

    Heaton - Grant
    Alonso - Brunt - Ake - Chambers - Amat
Sanchez - Ali - Lallana - Philips - De Roon
    Costa - Ibrahim - Defoe

Debating whether to go as above, or downgrade Sanchez to upgrade elsehwere. For example:

    Chambers -> Rose
    Sanchez - > Pogba
    Defoe -> Lukaku

Is Sanchez essential? Any other comments?

    Thanks.

I reckon sanchez is borderline essential with those fixtures, but he's pricey if you don't already own him.

I went Eriksen and Alli. Taking a wait-&-see attitude with Liverpool and their obstacle course of a fixture list.

Anyone here planning to cpt Alli?

No. Swansea defence far worse than Baggies.

I have not decided on next weeks captain yet but Alli has definitely made the short list

Hard to take it away from Sanchez against Swansea, but have not ruled Alli out.

Do Arsenal have a press conference today ahead of their FA cup match? Has there been any update on Ozil & Walcott that I've missed?
