The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 21

Fact or fiction, Friday night’s media circus surrounding Diego Costa was always going to impact on our Gameweek.

Over 374,000 Fantasy Premier League managers moved to show the Spaniard the door in the last 24-hours as reports stated that Costa had been “dropped” for Chelsea’s trip to Leicester City.

Of those transfers, more than 124,000 shifted to Olivier Giroud but, more significantly, just over 76,000 were to look to Spurs’ Harry Kane as their replacement.

Despite Giroud finding the net for the fourth successive Gameweek, Kane’s hat-trick and return of 17 points stole the headlines and provided an instant reward for those who had reacted to the Costa kerfuffle.

Another 32,000 have already pulled the plug on Costa since the passing of today’s deadline, seemingly consigning the striker to a term of absence and dismissing the prospect of Chelsea’s next fixture with Hull City at the Bridge.

It’s not clear if Costa will be a factor in that match.

Antonio Conte was quick to dispel the talk of a dispute or “bust-up”, citing a back problem as the cause of Costa’s omission. The striker will now apparently be assessed ahead of Gameweek 22, as the Blues work to diffuse talk of their player being unsettled.

That will be no easy task.

Ironically, even without their leading scorer, Chelsea were to breeze past the Foxes in third gear, with Marcos Alonso, another Fantasy asset subject to recent media reports, providing an unexpected brace and 21 points to outperform even Kane’s haul.

With Nathan Ake’s recall, there was talk and even reports that Alonso’s status in the Chelsea line-up was at risk.

The Standard reported “growing injury concerns” and, while Alonso’s start at the King Power was never seriously questioned, there were new doubts surrounding the Spaniard’s long-term prospects following Ake’s return.

Confidence was knocked. More than 78,000 FPL managers moved Alonso out of their squads over the past two Gameweeks, reacting to the four goals conceded but also perhaps the reports of Alonso’s “problem”.

Post-match, Alonso himself confirmed that there was some truth in the chatter but, with his emphatic performance, he had underlined both his present condition and importance to Chelsea and Fantasy managers.

The noise and bluster surrounding these two prize assets has been difficult to shut-out – in Costa’s case, it will inevitably continue.

The striker’s remaining owners will now be forced to strap themselves in for a prolonged period of uncertainty, with the tempting Gameweek 22 fixture providing an alluring reason to sit it out.

Meanwhile, those holding Alonso will be strengthening their grip.

Whatever the “pain” recently felt by the wing-back, it likely pales in significance next to the agony now being felt by those who sold him over the last two Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The costa price drops wouldn't hurt so much right now if his price wasn't locked when his net transfer was 200k+ before the stoke match. Looking at his history he would've gone up to 10.9.
Ake also gained ownership but no price rise
I hope FPL get rid of price locking rule after red flag next season.
Its the most ridiculous rule there is, if price plumments with a red flag then they should be allowed to rise following red flag.
People dont need 7 days to see a player has become available

Prices only plummet on red flag if above original price.

Yes i understand that, but then they should be allowed to rise again the same way they fell.
I dont see what purpose it serves locking the price.

He is at least 2nd now and might be back in 1st. Money doesn't buy you more points, it just gives you more options to try and obtain them.

No i think price changes makes things interesting, its the whole price lock situation that bugs me.
When a player goes from red flag to available, managers are looking to get them in (they would be out of most active teams)
So the price lock is stopping the rise not the fall, because at that point they wouldn't be falling

If they wasn't a lock, you rush to get a player in the 1st week because he will go up 0.3 otherwise.

Yes & i think he should be allowed to go up 0.3.
If a red flag causes a rush in price fall then it doesn't make sense why a rise is stopped by FPL.
I do wonder what most of the other people on here think though. Whether its 50/50 to stay as is, or a majority to get rid/stay

Wouldn't that then be the same as rushing to get rid of a player in the first week of an injury or suspension because he will drop 0.3 otherwise. I sort of see where OP is coming from. Price locks should either be there for x number of days upon change of status to/from available or not there in either case.

Red flags make the transfers needed treble so they slow down price drops. You really don't want to carry players who are injured/suspended in FPL these days unless you want to keep.

Oh I didn't know that red flags have that effect thanks for the info. It's probably not that straightforward to have a similar concept for returning players of requiring increased transfers in for a price drop.

And anyway come to think of it it's slightly different I guess. When someone gets injured it's a question of points from someone else vs a guaranteed 0 points. But when someone returns there is a risk element of the sold player outscoring the bought one.

But then again, and correct me if I'm wrong, if the idea behind price locks is to not punish the managers who are late to the news of a return, then why punish the managers who are late to the news of an injury. Or is that what separates the casuals from the rest?

FPL do their best to flag players. I get a notification on my iPad without being on the FPL site. It's much easier to notice someone injured on your FPL page vs someone hidden away who has just changed flags and isn't in your team.

Yeah that's true. I was thinking only of players who had been tracked on my watchlist but there are always bound to be so many more who recover in silence.

Would you rather have Pedro or Alonso at this point?

I will likely either be playing 3-5-2 with Pedro or 4-4-2 with Alonso?

              Cheers.

Did I mention i was 59th in Sky? Alonso is a big part of that. He is a dude Mustafi to Alonso worked beautifully

I have him in fantrax as well.

On FPL, I actually transferred him out recently and have Rose, Kosc and Baines, so I'm not hurting. But I'm seriously considering 4-4-2 at this point. So many defenders are offering great value.

I'm top 4K and don't want to ruin it, but it might be time to take an interesting chance on it.

                    Giroud owners- What's the plan?
Good chance he will have stint on the sidelines now in fairness.
Wasnt moving well for most of the time he was on.

Who would u be looking at to replace him for 8.6m or less..
                    Carroll, Rondon, Defoe maybe..?

OK. But have you noticed that Giroud is almost at another rise? You may want to see if that happens before you ditch him

He is dropping. Yesterday he was at 100.04. Now he is flagged and at 96.4. He is safe for another day from a drop, but he isn't going up anymore.

Is that right. I still wouldn't rush into anything.
He played on for a decent period of time it probably isn't that bad.

He wasn't committed to anything after jhe scored. He was running gingerly, and pulled out of a few clashes. He never ran at full tilt at all in the game. He stayed on because the bench wouldn't sub him. He signalled to come off as soon as he scored. Making it to the 59 min mark was not down to him.

Personally I am just going to wait the week and see if he looks like playing at home to Burnley is not a game you transfer a player out for without being certain they are not playing

I wanted Brunt or an Everton defender so will leave him on bench unless long term injury

In an ideal world you would play him in none of them

Hmm, I will probably get Phillips this week and relegate Snoddy to the bench for now.

You would think Phillips would be a good option for a few weeks

None, he threw his toys out of the pram, so not someone who will play his all against a stronger team.

                      Allen->Stanislas or Origi->Defoe

Giroud +2.8 = better attack. Also Siggy is dying in that Swansea team. He has no help, and yesterday was lost the whole game. Until the side picks up, he is wasted. Siggy + 2.8 = Liverpool mid v Swansea at Home!

Rondon doesn't deserve a third striker spot
                      Defoe/Lukaku .
