The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 22

A day for differentials.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and West Bromwich Albion’s Gareth McAuley are the only two players with more than 10% ownership to hit double-digits.

Firmino was teetering on the edge prior to the today’s deadline – owned by just over 456,000 FPL managers or 10.6% – the Brazilian had shed 340,000 since Gameweek 16.

Such losses are understandable, sparked by a dismal run of paltry returns. A single goal over ten barren Gameweeks – his strike in a 4-1 victory over Stoke City – did little to stem a tide of rejection. With Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana thriving, Firmino owners were switching allegiance or looking elsewhere as rival heavy-hitters delivered.

Today’s 14-points will reverse matters, for now at least. That fifth double-figure haul for Firmino ironically arrived on a day that saw Philippe Coutinho make a return to the Liverpool starting line-up. Withdrawn on 65 minutes, his comeback was curtailed as he gave way to allow his compatriot to take centre-stage.

While his two goals were not enough to save Liverpool from defeat, Firmino’s own Fantasy stock is revived, just as thousands were making or considering the move for his Brazilian team-mate.

But Coutinho’s early withdrawal has already proved enough to give some early adopters the jitters. Meanwhile, after suffering a third successive blank, Lallana has now returned just a single goal and an assist in six starts.

Based on early transfer activity, both are facing ownership losses over the extended gap to Gameweek 23, with this shifting affection from one Liverpool asset to another typical of behaviour this season.

Two prolonged spells of form from Coutinho’s and Lallana have come close to resolving the argument but, in truth, we look unlikely to ever settle on one of Klopp’s midfield as a dependable “solution”.

Perhaps the key question should be whether we should overlook them altogether.

Two draws and a defeat has stalled the Liverpool title bid, while over the last four Gameweeks, their attacking numbers are settled in mid-table. They face Chelsea next.

Sadio Mane’s absence appears to be a key factor and, arguably, until his return, we should reserve judgement, regardless of Firmino’s flurry.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Any love for Davies at Eve as 4th mid?

I haven't seen him play yet but FPL returns are amazing for that price and fixtures are strong. Is his place assured now?
    OR
go with the template choice of Stan vs. Philips?

Schneiderlin will soon be in starting lineup plus Gueye return will make his place uncertain. Will get a start here and there but regular start looks unlikely

Got him as a 5th mid with likely nailed spot the next week against Stoke. Shipped Lallana who would been bench next week against Chelsea and will likely fall once or twice this next week. Not sure if I will start him but he has free up over 3 mill for future moves

Is there any doubt that Holebas will break it? He's on 10 after 22. He'll have 15 games to get 5 more. If he plays all 15, he's getting 8 more I think especially if they get dragged into the relegation battle.

Meaning? From what I understand he'll miss only the game against Arsenal. Hence, 15 more games to get 5 more cards. Are you saying he will he get a 3 match suspension if he gets 15 cards?

    Heaton, Pickford.
    Alonso, Walker, Jones, Holebas, Amat.
    Eriksen, Lallana, Sanchez, Phillips, Whelan.
    Ibra, Giroud, Kane.

    0.0m, 2ft.
    Thinking
    1. Holgate in for Holebas... (Is he nailed?) which would leave 0.5m in bank.
    2. Carroll or Davies in for Whelan.. (Carroll more nailed, Davies better fixtures and higher ceiling)

Anybody giving serious thought to Gabriel Jesus in their teams? I think he will replace Sterling but a few people today said they had already brought him in for Aguero (!!) on the basis of those 9-10 minutes today.

Ditto! I have already planned how I will get him in my team too. Replacing Anichebe and downgrading Lallana. You reckon it is imminent or a few weeks off? Five of the next 6 are easy for City (on paper), just the Manchester derby to worry about. Sane is the other option as the only sensible thing Pep said in his BBC interview was that he now feels he is at a level for the first team.

Last season I bought Payet when he return on the pitch after being unavailable for some time(injured/suspension).
Made that decision when I watched him doing a fancy flick/trick to defeat an opponent.
      And that decision went well.

So, assuming he was definitely going to start next GW after the cup, would you rather have Sane or Lallana? If I sell Lallana for him, I would no Liverpool cover and I already have Aguero.

If i thought for a second he would start i would do Aguero>Jesus if i was you
Out of Sane or Lallana i would chose Lallana he is more nailed down Sane has too much competition for his place but i do think he is one for the future

Me too! I can't justify Aguero if he isn't starting every single match. It is already hard with him not on pens (apparently..).

I am looking for differentials to narrow the gap as my work rival is 150 points ahead of me but has stupidly used his wild card for this GW.

What should I do with this lot? 2 FTs and 0.0 ITB.

    Cech
    Brunt / Chambers / Rose
    Alexis / Lallana / Alli / Phillips
    Costa / Defoe / Zlatan

Pickford -- de Roon, Pieters, Kingsley

Thinking swapping Lallana out but not sure who to bring in, also one of Coleman/Baines in as well.

    25. 26 january playes Hull-Manchester United. And Liverpool -southampton. United 2-0 first leg. Soton 1-0 first leg.( EFL cup.)

    GW26:
If Liverpool turns it around, and goes trough to final, with United, Then:
Manchester City-Man.united sun.26 feb. ( or Hull Knock United out, then Hull-Burnley blank.)
Leicester-Liverpool Monday 27 feb. Or Southampton-Arsenal 25. feb. Will Blank.

    GW 28:
Then its a Question for GW28, witch teams still in it after 28. january and 18. febuary, in the FA cup.
    Bournmouth-West ham
Everton- West brom goes ahead as planned.

    I WONDER
    - if its any GW they most likely will slot in the teams that blank in any of the GW 26 and 28.
    - How to best take advantage of both GW with blank matches, and the following DGW's. Possible Double gameweek for Trio LIVERPOOL-UNITED-CITY is very appealing of course. But then i have to have say 3 of those, maby 4( keeper slot on bench) on bench for blank week befor maby. 2 free transfers + 1 hit. i can have 7 players DGW.
But then i havent taken in the factor of following blank gw28+ following DGW.

Low price players like : Stanislas-Fraser-Afobe(bournm.) Holgate-davies(everton) Phillips-Fletcher-Rondon( west brom) Lanzini-Antonio-Carrol(W.Ham) Can have an even sharper value comming weeks.
NO DGW, but no blanks eighter.

First i think i have to prep my bench next gameweeks. I have Jakupovic-Maloney-Amat- A. Smith.

Yes i have free transfer. i guess i know after 18. febuary. Then i have all teams for both GW26 and GW28.

    2. Jay_

I'm hoping (praying) that we get 8 blanks with just 2 games going ahead in gw28. That's quite unlikely but not impossible. If, big if, there's only 2 games, that would be beautiful. Already got 5 from that pool (WBA EVE BOU WHU) will be 8 in 2 gameweeks time.
Think it's best to just concentrate on dealing with the blank gw28 (and gw26 but that's easy) and worry about the doubles after, that's what the wildcard is for. Can't wait.

Ha, I'm hoping for a deja vu of last season from the blanks onwards, doubt the greens will be as big this year though as most people are aware of the benefit of saving the chips. If you nail it, you could get a 2 or dare i say it, 1 figure rank.

        Heaton
Nyom - Jones - Alonso (Holebas) (Amat)
Sanchez - Pogba - Eriksen - Phillips (De Roon)
        Ibra - Giroud - Lukaku

I think it is a good team. I think Clyne to Coleman is solid given Everton's form at the moment and the fact he is playing as a wingback. I went Baines and I wish I'd gone Coleman now. Wait until after the Cup though.

Kinda depends whether you need to play him every week.
As a set-piece and probably penalty taker, he is great value, and could get returns against anyone.
I'm happy to bench if I think a fixture is hopeless. Only ManU out of that lot is worth benching I'd say. And even then...

Getting bored of Jose Mourinho talking about how amazing his team is playing football. They are playing well enough to win most/all games, but their football is hardly scintillating. Impressive? Yes, but no where near the peaks we've seen this season from Spurs, Chelsea/City or even Arsenal.

The competition has just gotten much tougher to be honest. Chelsea playing to their potential, Spurs getting better after another season with the same team, City favorites for the title pre-season, Arsenal with their guaranteed top 4 spot and Liverpool being the real surprise package under Klopp. I think he'll sense Liverpool can/will be caught and it remains to be seen, which other team collapses for them to get their top 4 spot.

Yep Lvg did indeed achieve CL football but worth remembering he could focus all his intentions on that goal as he had no European distraction at the time.. the competition at the top now is even fiercer and will be a tough battle

It's a pretty drastic improvement in terms of style of play from the brand of football that had been dished out the last 3 years.. those other teams you mention play some great stuff at times and have done for years.. United quite simply has not in recent times

Agreed 100% and as you suggest, much better than the last 3 years, but it's no where near the best football in the league I'm afraid, like he's often implying. They aren't playing any different to a typical JM team. Strong, efficient with the ability to kill games off. His Chelsea team with Robben, Duff was scintillating, the counter attacks of Madrid were breathtaking, but the United team right now is more like the Chelsea team of 2-3 years ago, only a little less clinical in front of goal.

Not sure he's implied that at all rather you have taken his words that way.. Unbeaten now in 17 games 9 of which were won on the bounce so there is momentum and a plan which is coming together.. only 6 months into the job so there will be further improvement to come when he can mould the squad his way a little more

I really don't know about that. Don't think he deserves to get the benefit of doubt when it comes to him proclaiming how good his team is playing. You can be fairly certain he means they are playing the best football in the league. He just called Valencia the best right back in the world a couple of days ago. Whether he is or not, is up for debate, but it is indicative of how the guy thinks.

Valencia has been a revelation in that right back position for him and is just very much a Jose player.. big strong quick athletic and carries out the managers orders to the letter.. deserves all the praise that comes his way

Brunt typically plays OOP, not as a fullback, though his goal today was from playing FB.
Once Evans is fit again (and now that Nyom is available), he'll probably be pushed further up field.

But all that said, I'd probably go for Baines and Valencia.

Out of position, as is he is classed as a defender but playing as a midfielder.

                  A) Lallana - > Alli and Save
                  B) Hazard and Defoe to Alli and Lukaku
                  C) Something else?

                  2ft, 1.6itb.

                  Heaton
                  Alonso / Baines / McAuley
                  Sanchez / Hazard / Eriksen / Lallana / Phillips
                  Ibrahimovic / Defoe

                  Jakupovic / Friend / Pieters / Diamonde

B, but only hazard to Alli, h keep Defoe as he's as good as Lukaku: more regular goal scorer and on pens. Lukaku is on and of a couple of matches all the time, therefore called Trollkaku on here.

Hazard didn't fall today as predicted according to ffix, which is more reliable for price falls than FPL (which indicated a hazard price fall and made many do their transfers already yesterday)

Thanks for sharing Rama. I only use fplstats but it's been unreliable this season, will check out ffix now for sure.

That is a very selective reading of reliability. Generally, FPL Statistics is more reliable.

I disagree. I have given up even looking at FPLS over the last weeks, I find FFF way better this season.

This. But FPL is a bit more accurate for price rises than price falls
