Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 25

Pinpointing the Premier League’s latest whipping boys proved key to captaincy success in Gameweek 24, with Romelu Lukaku (9.7) scoring four in Everton’s 6-3 rout of Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

That scoreline means that the Cherries have shipped 16 goals in their last five matches and should ensure that players from their next opponents, Manchester City, fare well in this week Captain poll.

Given his brace against Swansea at the weekend – bringing his tally to three goals in just two Premier League starts – City starlet Gabriel Jesus (9.2) is likely to be a frontrunner ahead of Monday’s Vitality Stadium clash.

In terms of frequency of goal attempts in the box, he is now faster than team-mate Sergio Aguero (12.8), who found himself on the bench for a second successive match against the Swans.

While the Samba star has gathered more than 88,000 new FPL managers since Saturday, 38,000 have jettisoned the Argentine.

City midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) and Raheem Sterling (7.8) could also benefit from Aguero’s plummeting stock. The Belgian schemer now has two goals and an assist in his last three, while the England winger has been the master of creative consistency, recording eight assists in his last nine.

Leicester City’s fragile backline is another worth targeting when considering where to place the armband. Manchester United’s comfortable 3-0 win over the Foxes at the King Power Stadium on Sunday means that Claudio Ranieri’s defence have conceded 10 over their last four

Next up for the Italian’s hapless rearguard is a trip to Swansea City, which promotes the Welsh side’s set piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.4) as a strong differential captaincy option. The 8.2% owned Icelander now has three goals and a pair of assists under new manager Paul Clement, as well as three double-digit hauls at the Liberty Stadium.

Another alternative armband candidate is Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe (7.8), who scored a brace away to Crystal Palace at the weekend. The 27.8% owned veteran next faces a home tie against a Southampton side that has shipped 11 goals in their last six matches, with just one shutout earned over that spell.

Following their successful day out at Leicester, Manchester United once again face a favourable defence, when Watford drop by Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Hornets have just two clean sheets and have conceded 22 times on the on the road, which presents Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) with a golden opportunity to top this week’s poll. The Swede’s strike against the Foxes was his 15th of the season, and he has been the FPL most popular captain pick for seven successive Gameweeks.

Alternative United assets include Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.8), who racked up a 14 point return on Sunday, his biggest of the campaign, thanks to a goal, assist and maximum bonus returns.

Before Marco Silva took charge of Hull City, their trip to Arsenal this weekend would have cemented Alexis Sanchez (11.8)’s captaincy credentials. But in his four league matches in charge, the Portuguese has seemingly transformed the Tigers.

Over that period, Silva’s side have defeated Liverpool and Bournemouth, kept Manchester United at bay in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford and proved a stubborn opponent to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where they eventually lost 2-0.

Although the 35.8% owned Sanchez, who has 10 attacking returns in his last 12, is likely to be a popular selection, the considerable improvement from his Gameweek opponents could see him miss out on top spot.

Last week’s captaincy poster boy Lukaku could suffer the same fate: he is unlikely to find the Middlesbrough defence as obliging as the Cherries when Everton visit the Riverside Stadium next weekend. Aitor Karanka’s troops have conceded 14 goals in 12 home matches, earning four clean sheets.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Chelsea defenders have scored twice as many goals (11) as all Sunderland players (other than Defoe). 😆

When he goes on a good run and he's good fixtures coming it's best to just get him in.

Maybe it was too late after 8 games then?

And Swansea are playing much better under Clement. I think he'll do well.

does this not exactly mirror the start of the last bandwagon? he had a poor fixture, did well, then a tasty home fixture against a fellow bottom dweller and then nothing for four or so GW'ks

i do think he has more freedom under Clement

Playing fellow strugglers in that run, sometimes with those fixtures it doesn't pan out how you'd hope. Though you'd have to say Leicester do look woeful, that's what worries me having not got Siggy yet.

Siggy has chelsea away to follow which i dont think he'd get any returns

Eriksen has liv STO which is decent . id consider Siggy after chelsea (Eriksen -> Siggy is not worth for next 2 imo)

Shhh be quiet, you'll get in trouble. Yeah it's not clear cut that's for sure, maybe just maybe it might be worth doing a couple of -4's if needs be. Get him in (siggy) for Leicester then bring back Erik. Nothing stopping us doing that, if it's possible?

    Bottomed -

Where should I concentrate on fixing in my team first considering blank GW's I think I will only be able to field 10 players...

    I have 0.2 ITB and 0FT

    1) Thinking I need to get Stones out for Funes Mori or Robertson after this GW (for the blank week.) Good idea?
    2) Is it also worth losing Sanchez for Hazard after this week? - It would give me funds to change Ake out for a starter...

    Grant

    Stones/ Coleman / Walker /
    Sigurdsson / Phillips / Sánchez / Alli
    Costa / Jesus / Lukaku

    Bench - Jakupovic / Capoue / Aké / Kingsley

    Boruc (Pickford)
Alonso - McAuley - Baines (Fabio, Pieters)
Sanchez - Alli - Eriksen - Phillips (deRoon)
    Defoe Lukaku Costa

2.6 ITB 1 FT - Save and then use 2 FT when we know who blanks GW28?

Back in the team soon? Seems like some of the same stuff that went on with Mkhi. Jose won't take any nonsense from the players/agents and the players seem to understand it now.

Bringing on Young (lol) instead of Martial yesterday was hopefully an eye opener for Martial. Stop sulking or stay on the bench.

Martial nailed on at LW would be a very good FPL option, especially with United possibly having 3 DGWs.

Swapping him after 27 for snodgrass seems mad, especially if he has a game and snodgrass doesn't! I'm sure that week you will have other pressing issues too! I'm tempted to do something like that now! This GW28 blank is annoying me now! I held off on Lukaku(C) this GW to keep Carroll and get 2 GW28 non blankers in! And that alone cost me 40+ points 🙁

I've currently got 5.9 in the bank and 1 free transfer. Would it be best to save it and have 2 free transfers after the break with money in the bank?

I was thinking of perhaps Alli and Anichebe out for Siggy and Costa (-4). But I can't help thinking there will be an upset or two in the cup - wouldn't be surprised if Fulham beat Spurs reserves for example and Spurs had a game in week 28 and I'd regret the move.

I'd save the transfer and get Lukaku in next week for Ibra

    Alonso, Holebas, Holgate, Evans*, Friend*

    a) Fix that defense first Friend > 5.0 (who)
    b) Lallana > Siggy

If Rose is out you could get Davies. Otherwise get McAuley

Hi all, bench Rondon or Phillips?

Got both when West Brom were scoring for fun a few weeks ago, and may as well keep them for the blanks now.

I brought in Trekkers this week for some strange reason. Should I keep him or swap to Jesus for a hit?

What are we thinking about Iwobi on here? transferred him in last night but already feeling like i should have waited and maybe gone for Snodgrass.

Well he's going to miss two out of the next four games so I think snodgrass was way to go. Not that that's what you want to hear.

After GW28 good option Iwobi - I'm thinking to bring him in for Phillips.

How is everyone currently looking for GW28?

I am currently sitting on 8 players. What number would you be happy with? (this is assuming there are only 3 fixtures)

I think I would be happy with 8 or 9 to be honest, you don’t want to totally wreck your team...

    Foster

    Maguire / A.Smith / Baines

    Siggy / Phillips

    Carroll / Lukaku

Currently not likely to play: Heaton, Alonso/P.Jones, Hazard/Alli/De Roon, Ibra

Yeah 7 or 8 for me too. Think it wise to think of the financial side of it as well, how much it would cost to bring these players back in we're shifting. Don't want to mess things up to badly going forward. Bit of headache that, for me anyway I'm terrible at budgeting lol

    Afternoon all,

I was in complete freefall and have just used my wildcard, so I'm in need some confirmation that I've made at least one good choice.

    Foster
    Alonso / Goalman / McCauley
    Eriksen / Hazard / Siggy / Snodgrass
    Costa / Lukaku / Jesus

    Bench - Jakupovic / Chambers / Pieters / Morrison

    Any suggestions?
