Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

Spurs crash out of Europe as a hot-headed Dele Alli sees red but a formation change and an easing schedule could yet be good news for Fantasy managers.

Tottenham 2 Gent 2 (2-3 on aggregate)

Spurs’ failure against Gent was both glorious and gloriously inept.

An early Christian Eriksen strike, from a Tony Alderweireld ball over the top, was just reward for a blistering start to the second leg, only for Harry Kane to miscue a header into his own net to gift the visitors a crucial away goal.

Spurs remained the far superior side, even after Dele Alli was shown a straight red card six minutes before half-time for a wild lunge that caught his opponent just below the knee.

The ten men dominated after the break and went ahead again when Eriksen cutely set up Victor Wanyama, but as the hosts poured forward looking for a tie-winning third goal they left themselves increasingly exposed to a counter-attack and that proved to be their final, and definitive, undoing.

Much will be made, and rightly so, of Alli’s recklessness, but the match contained a number of positives for Fantasy managers with Spurs players in their ranks.

Mauricio Pochettino had decided against utilising the successful 3-4-2-1 formation while both Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose were injured. But with the former now back and up to speed after a start in the FA Cup, the coach reverted to that set-up and Spurs were transformed.

Alli’s departure and the introduction of Son Heung-min saw a shift to a 4-2-2-1 on the hour-mark but, having started at wing-back, we may now see Ben Davies adopt handed that role until Rose is fit to return.

Eriksen, without a league goal in nine matches, thrived and Kane received sterling service from a team that played on the front foot throughout the match, even if the striker was unusually wasteful in front of goal.

Both players are among the top 12 for transfers-out this week, while only three assets have suffered more sales than Alli. But that exodus could prove to be a touch premature with home matches against Stoke City and Everton to come before a Gameweek 28 blank.

And however harsh the immediate comedown from a European exit might be, the longer term impact on Spurs’ over-stretched squad can only be beneficial.

They boast an excellent run-in, with home matches against Arsenal and Manchester United their toughest tests remaining.

If Spurs can improve upon their profligacy – they had 25 shots against the Belgians, but only three were on target – then there should be plenty of Fantasy mileage left in their key assets as the season reaches its climax.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Walker, Dier (Janssen 89), Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies (Son 58), Wanyama, Dembele (Winks 75), Eriksen, Alli, Kane.
Subs not used: Vorm, Trippier, Sissoko, Wimmer.

If Utd win the Europa, but finish 5th/6th in the league, does this deny the fourth placed finishers a Champions League spot?

Similarly if City win the Champions League and also finish 5th/6th, could we see a possibility of only the top two qualifying?

the spot for winning CL/EL is in addition to the 4 teams qualifying for group stage (top 3) or play-off (4th) phase.

I think you get a spot in addition to the top 4.

However, in the unlikely event that City and United win the CL and EL, but both of them finish 5th and 6th, I think the 4th placed team will miss out on a CL spot.

No leagues can have a maximum of five teams in the CL this days, so PL teams would need to win both CL and EL and finish outside the top 4, for 4th place finisher to be denied.

When Chelsea won the Champion's league in 2012, they knocked Tot out of their 4th place spot. So, not sure if you can get 5 in the CL with this happening.

    Can I ask...

On my app, it now shows a full list of fixtures for GW28... and no blanks. Is this the app messing up, or have the fixtures been rearranged?! Otherwise all my planning has been for nothing!

How do Spurs fans feel about the early exit from Europe after a pretty poor CL run?

I think Spurs have come on in the last 5 years in the League but haven't pushed on at all in Europe

well they have gotten out of CL group stages most years, not an amazing record mind.

English teams in general have fallen far behind in Europe but I think Spurs have kicked on so much in terms of league and becoming a top4 challenging team but they don't seem to give a monkeys about Europe. They had a chance to qualify from CL group and played a second string team.

    2. Art Vandelay

Poch has played some odd teams over the last few years and we definitely lack some top quality cover in attacking areas. Lamela has been a miss too more recently, and Wembley hasn't helped (big concern as we will be playing all our home games there next season).

As far as this season is concerned, it could be a bit of a blessing in disguise and hopefully we can push on and cement a top 4 place and have a decent shot at the FA Cup.

do you not see the pointless circle though, Spurs rest players in Europe so they can finish top4 in the league only to get back into Europe and rest players and drop out again to finish top4.....round and round it goes

To do Gray to Kun in GW27, I can get Funes Mori and Snoody instead of Coleman and Siggy for a hit. Is it worth it ?

Alternatively I can do Kaku to Kun in GW27, then get Kaku back to captain in GW28 and GW29, for a minus 8. There are a lot of variables but it look's likely Kun would need to score one more goal in DGW27, than Ibra and Lukuku combined for it to pay off, is this a better option ?

Sticking with Coleman and Siggy, with the option of getting Sterling for Phillips for a hit (as my City coverage) is also a possibility (Phillips plays my two Everton defenders in GW28).

    Foster, Jak
    Alonso, Baines, Jones, Kos, *******
    Mane, Courtino, T.Carroll, Phillips, *******
    Lukaku, Gray, Ibra

1FT, 2.8m ITB (currently have Amat and Alli)

I'm planning to get rid of Jones or Kos (for Mawson) with my GW28 FT

That's my thoughts as well, was told (on here) that my rank would suffer if I didn't get more than one City DGW players last night though.

we don't even know if they have a DGW yet

best play your own game and not listen to what people say. your rank may suffer from having no DGW but may also suffer from having less gw28 players or taking loads of hits.

why not just do Ibra to Aguero in gw27 if CIty have a DGW and captain him?

Kept Ibra and was going to captain him in the BOU game, thinking it would be a mistake getting rid.

    Best option?

    A) Mane, Phillips & Ibra(blank, BOU)

    B) Lallana, Sterling & Ibra(blank, BOU) (-4)

    C) Coutinho, Sterling & Costa(SWA, whu) (-8)

    D) Firmino, Sane & Costa(SWA, whu) (-8)

All options have a plan for Aguero in.
If A or B I will bench Ibra this week for Chambers (cry) or Mee (hul)

    Appreciate your thoughts!

    Hi all,

Looking to replace Capoue with a v.cheap midfielder. Should be someone who plays in GW 28. I feel this should be done as I have 2FT and one gets lost tomorrow if I don't make a move.

    Foster - (Grant)
    Azpili - Williams - McAuley - Daniels - (Pieters)
Phillips - Capoue - Siggy - Eriksen -(Sanchez)
    Defoe - Lukaku - (Ibra)

    1. Capoue -> Huddlestone
    2. Capoue -> Obiang
    3. Capoue -> Routledge

    Or any other ideas...

Been looking at what I think are my best options for blanks and City's likely double now. Looks to me like the upshot will be less players in wk28 and probably one or 2 hits to put the team right post wk28, which was avoidable previously.

How does everyone else feel about it? I think we should at least look again at the case for wildcarding directly after the wk28 blank, I think the argument was weak before, but this would now make a little more sense.

Overall I still think its sub-optimal without more info on the likely doubles, but it could allow you try and maximise the potential of these next weeks without worrying too much about sorting it all out afterwards.

I still think WC GW36 will be the best value and it's not even close. WCing during awkward schedules is only going to be a temporary solution. Good planning and sensible transfers is still going to be the most optimal in the coming weeks IMO. Sti back and watch everyone rip their teams to shreds.

    Good morning all,

    FT used, so:

Due to BGW Schlupp is my 11th player, worth taking out for a hit? OR take Amat out for a hit?

    Azpi Brunt Baines Schlupp Amat

    Thanks!

ManU fans, on scale of 1, how disappointed are you that Rooney decided to stay in club and not give you that big money from a transfer to China?

not a Man Utd fan but I would be disappointed as he is taking a huge chunk of their wage allowance for a bench player.

'Arry Redknapp reckons Arsenal should sign him up, apparently because he's forgotten what a capable footballer looks like.

Tbh, I don't blame Rooney, he has no reason to leave seeing as his wages are so massive at United. Probably doesn't want to move to China either, which is fair. I'd have liked to get him off the wage bill, as China is the only real solution, nobody else would be stupid enough to pay his salary.

However, Mou has pretty much ended his days as a United starter and that is really all I have wanted for the last 3 seasons. So weighing that up, it's not ideal he stays, but it's much much better than him frequently playing.

I am not blaming Rooney but pretty surely he wants to play and he must know that staying at Utd he will be a bench player but I can't see him taking reduced wages to move clubs where he is first choice.

          Poor trolling attempt.

Rooney is United's all time top goal scorer, yet you'd have him shipped to the cattle market as soon as he's past his sell by date. And we complain about fickle fans.

No captain Kaku looked at history at home and Costa ave just over 6 and Fletcher around 3 so it's close think will do it just to protect me self from a Costa haul as my mini league rival will prob C him and I have 80 point lead.

    My Current team is:

    Grant - Pickford
    Coleman - Alonso - Walker - Holebas - Amat
    Siggy - Eriksen - Sanchez - Phillips - Allen
    Ibra - Kane - Benteke
    1.4ITB - 2FT

    My plans are:
    GW 26 = Sanchez & Ibra > Mane & Lukaku
GW27 = Eriksen & Kane > Sterling & Aguero for -4 (If City have DGW)
    GW28 = Holebas > Brunt (Means I will have 6 players)

    Does this sound OK?

Have absolutely no idea how to attack this BGW dilemma and i would highly appreciate some inputs / options.

    My team (£3.7 ITB / 1 FT):

    Cech / Grant
    Luiz, Baines, Brunt (Cedric, Love)
    Sanchez, Siggy, Eriksen, Zaha (Leko)
    Zlatan, Defoe, Rondon

Right now i only have 9 players for GW26 and 5 players for GW28.
I bought Sanchez for £11.0 and i can sell him for 11.3. Purchase price atm is 11.7, but hopefully it will drop alot the next days/weeks.

I want to get Alonso in somehow after the blanks as he is pretty essential, but it's not set in stone. I'm also thinking about Aguero for the DGW's and maybe Lukaku. Im thinking around Sanchez -> Manè and Leko -> Firmino for a -4. This gives me 11 players for GW26 and 7 players for GW28. Next GW i will use atleast one more transfer, either Zlatan -> Aguero, Zlatan -> Lukaku or Zaha -> ?

Any do's or don't? Am i thinking sensible or does anyone have some inputs?

Thank you very much in advance.

Sanchez to Mane and Zlatan to Lukaku this week then next week Lukaku to Aguero this gives you two good players this week and covers Aguero next. Then do 2 trfs in 28 for a hit to get a decent team out.
