Scout Notes – EFL Cup Final

That man Zlatan Ibrahimovic grabs the glory as Manchester United snatch the season’s first silverware from a luckless Southampton.

Manchester United 3 Southampton 2

Goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic started and finished an exhilarating EFL Cup Final that, on any other day, could well have been won by the Saints.

The Swede made it six strikes from his last four Europa League and domestic cup matches – he’s managed just one in four league fixtures – as United saw off a strong Southampton comeback from 2-0 down just before half-time.

In the light of two blanks in three Gameweeks, Ibrahimovic has been sold by more than 4% of his ownership base. The 35.6% who have remained loyal will hope to reap the rewards when United entertain a struggling Bournemouth side this Saturday.

Conversely, another striker who scored twice at Wembley, Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini, has seen his ownership figures bloom despite the Saints also missing both Gameweeks 26 and 28.

Snapped up by over 131,000 last week, he’s already been acquired by 52,000+ since Saturday’s deadline passed – at least twice the number of transfers in than any other player.

A cup final brace made it five goals from just three starts since a late January move from Napoli and he has transformed a Southampton side who had been struggling without an out-and-out striker since Charlie Austin was injured in early December.

While Gabbiadini clearly has the form, his side’s fixtures are another story. They will need to quickly shake off their EFL Cup disappointment when they travel to an improving Watford at the weekend before a blank and then a trip to Spurs round out a patchy short-term schedule.

Two double Gameweeks to come offers the promise to come, but they will involve tough home matches with Arsenal and United.

Southampton were very unlucky not to open the scoring at Wembley when Gabbiadini’s finish was ruled out because Ryan Bertrand was controversially adjudged to have been offside.

An Ibrahimovic free-kick, following a foul on Ander Herrera, and a Jesse Lingard finish from a Marcos Rojo assist merely served to enhance Saints’ feelings of injustice before Gabbiadini netted from Cedric Soares’ pass just before the break.

The Italian leveled three minutes after the re-start, Oriol Romeu hit the post and David de Gea was forced into a couple of fine saves as United hung on before Ibrahimovic headed home a Herrera cross in the 87th minute to win the match.

That United rode their luck is not in doubt. How Fantasy managers utilise the team’s assets looks equally clear-cut.

The Gameweek 28 blank surely demands patience before a string of attractive fixtures, involving trips to Middlesbrough and Sunderland and home matches with West Brom and Everton, lead up to a Gameweek 33 clash with Chelsea.

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Rojo, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Carrick 45), Lingard (Rashford 77), Martial (Fellaini 90), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: Romero, Blind, Young, Rooney.

Southampton XI: Forster, Soares, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Davis (Rodriguez 90), Redmond, Tadic (Boufal 77), Gabbiadini (Long 83).
Subs not used: Hassen, McQueen, Caceres, Hojbjerg.

    Lukaku+Eriksen > Kun+Snodgrass for a -4?

    Leaves:

    Jaku
    Alonso - Walker - Coleman
    Snoddy - Mane - Siggy - Phillips
    Kane - Kun(C) - Zlatan
    (Heaton - Evans - Pieters - Capoue)

I get why you would want sterling for the dgw but can you be sure he will 180 minutes? Where Siggy will get 90 mins every game he plays, and Siggy is at home to Burnley, plus Siggy has a game the week after. Also are you going to captain Sterling over Kun? That is why i would pick Siggy over Sterling.

Are you going to triple captain Kun?

I just can't look passed those 2 fixtures Sunderland and Stoke, plus i have happy memories of triple captain Kun from last year on a dgw. 76 points or what ever it was.

I'm so tempted to triple captain Kun. But i really wanna use it on Sanchez later on when Arsenal have a dgw but knowing my luck Sanchez will get injuried between now and the end of the season and i will miss out on some big Kun points.

    For 27: Antonio > Sterling (c)
    For 28: Sterling + Mustafi + Diomande> T. Carroll + Robertson + Carroll (-8, have 10 starters)

      1. Dacra
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

Yeah 28 looks like the most dull -8 ever, but the plan was for 28 transfers to help rearrange team to go 343 again from 29 onwards, taking the hits to get bench fodder in that week who will play to free up cash, instead of taking hits in week 29 to rebuild.

Only taking -8 total from now to 30 but still having a City DGW captain, 10 playing 28 and a team by 30 as below seems ok to me when looked at overall and not just the 28 moves:

        Jaku/Grant
Alonso - Brunt - Baines (Chambers, Robertson)
Sanchez - Mane - Alli - Siggy (Carroll)
        Ibra - Costa - Carroll

        0.5itb

Dunno, maybe this is stupid but theres no simple way to navigate the next weeks..

Has a deadline ever been moved?

      I don't think it's ever happened.
There's nothing in the rules to say it can't happened, but we presume the deadline dates are rigid, although they definitely aren't rigid as the times change as TV games are moved.

    Flying visit.

The only time Ibra had a better goal/game ratio than now (0.68) was at PSG (0.86). Every other club has been lower, though at AC Milan it was 0.65 so quite close.

Nope. Pointing out the perceptions of English football being superior to other European competitions are nonsense.

There is nothing in this, it's Henderson injured with feared broken foot - hell miss tonight but fears allayed, just bruised.

Still yet to see anything on Mane, whoever said he was out is the rumor monger

    What route would you take?

    A) Kane and Eriksen to Sterling and Kun (-4)
    B) Kane to Kun for free (Captain Kun)
    C) Eriksen to Sterling for free (Captain Sterling)
    D) Lukaku and Eriksen to Kun and Sane (-4)

Re the question above. I believe that the FPL deadline HAS been brought forward before - re a United Villa match that was brought forward. Think it was a couple of years ago.

In fact this is the only previous time that I can remember a match being brought forward rather than postponed (I'm sure there have been others I am forgetting though)

Although this was in the days before they had social media. I expect that they wouldn't want egg on their faces after tweeting the hell out of the potential DGW, plus it draws more traffic.

Did he flop? Can't remember but I have a [probably irrational] hangup about Lukaku from previous season(s). Don't like him in my team. Don't like watching him play. Don't like the intermittent goals or home/away contrast.

Not even sure why anymore but maybe that was it.
