The Stock Check – Gameweek 27 – Wednesday

Raheem Sterling is handed the night off, while Sergio Aguero disappoints as double Gameweek 27 fails to live up to the hype. A goalless draw at the Etihad means that defences prevail over the pair of fixtures as Manchester City and Stoke deliver the unexpected and bring in two clean sheets apiece.

On the Rise

Aleksandar Kolarov
While John Stones dropped to the bench this evening, Kolarov once again retained his spot in the heart of Pep Guardiola’s back-four – an eighteenth start in their last 19 league matches.

Back-to-back clean sheets over the double – City now have four in their last five – was supplemented with maximum bonus away to Sunderland to ensure that the Serbian ended double Gameweek 27 with a 15-point return, joint-top for the Etihad side.

With City set for another double further down the line, Kolarov may yet have a part to play in our seasons once the schedule turns kinder in Gameweek 32.

Lee Grant, Eric Pieters
Stoke’s budget stopper came up trumps once again to deliver 13 points for his 8.9% owners.

City’s poor performance meant that Grant needed to make just a single save on his way to earning a third clean sheet in his last four appearances.

Since being handed a first start in Gameweek 6, Grant’s average of 4.2 points per match is more than any Potters player and not far off Burnley’s Tom Heaton (4.5) between the posts.

As for Pieters, he claimed two bonus points from last night’s stalemate and has now gathered additional points in three of his last six, amassing six bonus points over that spell. Owned by 8.2%, the Dutchman is by far the most popular option in Mark Hughes’ rearguard, though his appeal is clearly limited by the Grant option.

Stoke may have a blank next weekend, but the following schedule is in their favour, with clashes against six of the bottom ten in their subsequent eight from Gameweek 29 onwards.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
Much was expected of both City and their star striker – they had scored five in each of their last two at the Etihad and found the net in every home league match under Guardiola.

Subject to a major bandwagon for the double, Aguero convinced almost 160,000 FPL managers to wield their Triple Captain chip but ultimately managed just one goal and nine points for his pair of fixtures.

Wednesday’s blank means it’s just two goals in his last ten Gameweek appearances for Aguero, with City now sitting out Gameweek 28 prior to clashes against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Over 40,000 managers have already parted company this week and the drift towards Harry Kane – who has 12 goals in ten, by comparison – is likely to accelerate once we navigate the weekend blank.

Raheem Sterling
The second most bought player for the double Gameweek, Sterling fell victim to Guardiola’s rotation as he was handed the night off against the Potters.

To an extent, Pep had a point – Sterling had started more league matches than any team-mate prior to tonight, yet that’s no consolation for his 17.3% FPL owners, who ended the Gameweek with six points.

An assist for Aguero’s opener at Sunderland means the winger has produced points in nine of his last 11 league appearances, but in spite of that consistency, the City teamsheet served a reminder that we cannot hope to second-guess their manager.

Sterling has already been sold by 50,000+ FPL managers this week, as Guardiola’s tinkering has us thinking twice over retraining their pricey assets

Peter Crouch
A run of ten straight league starts came to an end on Wednesday after the Potters’ target man dropped to the bench to accommodate new boy Saido Berahino.

It was on the cards. Crouch had managed 90 minutes in just one of his previous four as Hughes looked to initially utilise the former West Brom man off the bench late on.

With Berahino’s match fitness now up to scratch, Crouch’s appeal as a
valid budget third striker now looks somewhat limited – with a blank Gameweek 28 preceding a clash with Chelsea, his 6% owners may look to bail soon.

Alonso, Coleman, Evans, Holebas, Holgate. No FT. Choose one:

    A) Holgate > Fernandez (Hull,Bou,MIDD) and rotate with Holebas (blank,Cry,SUN)
    B) Holebas > Fernandez (free up 0.4 and play him next 3 at least)
    C) No hit. Play Holebas next games (as Evans has heavy fixtures).

Really uncertain as to what's the smart option moving forward. As of right now I only have 7 players for GW 28 (two of which are Amat and Philips).

    My team is:

    Heaton (Valdes)
    Amat - Alonso - Pieters - McAuley - Chambers
    Sanchez - Mirallas - Philips - Siggy - Sterling
    Lukaku - Llorente - Costa

I'm quite certain I want to sell Sterling for Coutinho (yes, Mané and Firmino have form, but I need a differential in my ML).
Should I do anything else? I have 4.3 in the bank. 1.5 of which I need to get Kane next week. Not sure whether I want to sell Pieters or Chambers for i.e. Coleman. Both have some nice fixtures and I don't plan on WC before DGW, so really should use the opportunity to do hits this week as they don't hurt as much.

Really need some advice here. Cheers!

Maybe write off GW28 and plan for the future ?

I think, for your sanity, you need to resolve Amat, Phillips and Mirallas with players that you can live with going forward to GW29.

Mirallas hasn't started since the Jan transfer window so is not even a starter but you may get something off the bench this week.

      Sterling can wait maybe?

      GW29
      Amat > Valencia
      Costa > Kane

      GW28
Phillips > T Davies or T Carroll as a proper 5th mid (or both for Mirallas too and rotate them as a 4th mid home/away)
      Mirallas > Liverpool mid

      Or
      GW28
      Phillips > T Carroll
      Mirallas > T Davies
      GW29
      Llorente > Kane
      Sterling > Liverpool mid (maybe GW28 for a -4)

        Thanks for reply!

Mirallas has provided attacking returns in his last two even though he has started on the bench. However, I definitely see your point and plan to sub him out of my team.

Can't see how Davies and Carroll will give me any attacking returns, which I really should hope for. In addition I already have three SWA players.

Fully understand. I do think you need someone like Carroll as a bench 5th mid that to free-up £1mill + and is actually nailed, attacking and may get some points too (Swans fan and he really is a FPL bargain)

Personally I would look at something like

          Heaton (Valdes)
Amat>Valencia GW29, Alonso, Pieters, McAuley, Chambers

          Sanchez, Sterling>Coutinho GW28, Siggy, Phillips>Carroll GW28, Mirallas>Alli? GW29+

          Lukaku>Gabiadinni GW29+ ? , Llorente>Kane GW29+, Costa

The other options are pants, let's be honest - Llorente is being ridiculously over-hyped as there are no other options, other than Carroll who is probably the best 1 week punt, but a certain sporadic crock risk further than that.

In the last 6 games Llorente has scored 6 more points than Costa and 1 less than Lukaku (including his 4 goal haul) and more double digit hauls than both.

I think he is only bettered by Kane over that period ?

Many arguments came up about how good the fixtures were, how bad Stoke and Sund defenses were, how many goals Kun has scored recently in ALL matches.
Every game is a chance for a team or individual to totally reverse their fortunes and we see it almost weekly.
Going with your gut instincts is something I plan to do more of instead of following stats and the herd.

Option A: Be a dullard, do Sterling to Coutinho.

Option B: Hits aplenty, do the above plus Phillips > Mane and Aguero > Llorente.

I've got six without the transfer, so the choice is going 7 or taking two hits and getting my squad up to 9:

Currently have 6 + Holgate & Amat for 28. Doing the above would give me 7+. I'm also trailing in my ML in 5th spot at moment with the teams above having minimal 28 players.

    Cheers chaps.

It's a nice feeling to have Mane. I've actually doubled up with Firmino this week myself.

The smooth: 87 points. 27 points from Grant and Pieters. Mane.

    The rough: TC Aguero, Sterling.

Still, 9 players for next week after a bit of planning so might get away with it...

Soon, I think it was GW29 last season when we knew the majority of the rescheduled fixtures.

With Liverpool's incredible run of fixtures to end the season, is anyone planning on keeping one of their midfielders throughout, despite no DGW?

Yep. Already have Mane and looking at Coutinho in this week and will decide which to keep over the next 3-4 GW's.

Probably, then I will look at the situation on my GW36 WC and GW37 BB to see if there is potential for a better 2 game return from my bench

    Jaku
    Baines McAuley
    Mane Firmino Siggy Phillips
    Lukaku (c) Carroll

Heaton Alonso Pieters Amat Sterling Aguero. 1FT. 0.9 ITB.

Sterling -> T. Carroll to free up funds?
    Amat -> playing defender?

If you're not playing the WC for a while (or have already played it), I'd go for the Tom Carroll route, since it'll move you towards a more balanced 3-4-3 set up.

Best option for a 2 week punt:

A: Big Andy (bou, LEI) -4
    B: Llorente (hul, bou) -4
C: No punt, play Barnes in gw29 (sun)

Either way they become Gabbiadini in GW30, it's not a long term dealio

if he plays it now will he still have to suffer the 20 point hit or will it reverse?

    Heaton ?
    McAuley Coleman Baines
    Siggy Manè(c) Phillips ?
    Lukaku

    Pickford - Kun - Defoe - Eriksen - Capoue - Alonso - Kingsley

    a. Capoue > King (6.9m) -4
    b. Kun > Carroll (ftw) -4
    c. Kun+Cap > Carroll + Cout (13m) -8

            • 13 Years
            7 years, 3 months ago

I guess in theory it's a -4 if you take into account those players you're removing aren't playing and those you bring in give you (at least) 2pts and a better team going forward.

    2. Athletic Bilbo
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 3 months ago

C is tempting but you have key gw28 assets and how do you go forward? For example you want Kane next week? -8 this week and -4 next to get Kane?

Or save yourself 12 points and do Aguero to Kane next week?

Depends on future plans and expected returns
