The Stock Check – Gameweek 34 – Wednesday

Spurs grind out a vital victory, Arsenal need help to triumph and Middlesbrough pick up their first three points of the year on a dour but important night of Premier League fare. A long and meandering Gameweek 34 is nearly over, with few well-owned assets enjoying a profitable Wednesday night.

Here’s the Stock Check…

On the Rise

Christian Eriksen
In the rush to pick up Spurs stars for their Double Gameweek 37, the Danish midfielder has been rather left behind.

More than 30,000 managers sold Eriksen ahead of their trip to Selhurst Park and he duly punished that lack of faith with a stunning winner to keep the title race alive and his loyal 18% ownership happy.

That’s three goals and as many assists over the last six Gameweeks for Eriksen. Add in nine bonus points, including a maximum last night, and he’s provided 49 points over that period – the 35.2%-owned Dele Alli has 42 points from the same haul of goal and assists, but can’t match his team-mate for bonus awards.

The pair remain key assets for the run-in, with Harry Kane’s assist for Eriksen keeping his own output simmering ahead of Sunday’s decidedly crucial North London derby.

Indeed, Kane remains the top FPL transfer target since the previous deadline passed, with over 34,000 new owners snapping him up.

Nacho Monreal, Gabriel
The Spanish defender is thriving in Arsene Wenger’s brave new world of three at the back.

The 3-4-2-1 formation was rolled out again in the 1-0 win over Leicester City, though the Gunners’ manager’s decision to play Kieran Gibbs at left wing-back allowed Monreal to switch to left centre-back at the expense of Rob Holding.

That derails plans to exploit the young centre-half’s 4.0 price as we consider how best to take advantage of Arsenal’s two Double Gameweeks still to come.

But it should boost Monreal’s attractiveness. He’s not the cheapest at 5.8, but Wenger has used the versatile Spaniard in all but two league matches this season.

His 12-point haul last night included an assist for Robert Huth’s own goal, a clean sheet and maximum bonus points.

A cheaper option involves Gabriel (4.8), who has started all three matches of Wenger’s new-look Arsenal in light of Shkodran Mustafi’s ongoing injury absence.

Choosing Gunners defenders remains risky, however – last night’s clean sheet was only a third since Gameweek 21 and they face Spurs and Southampton away and host Manchester United over the next three fixtures.

A knee injury picked up by Laurent Koscielny last night clouds the issue further. Although the Frenchman managed to play through the pain to finish the Leicester match, Wenger conceded post-match that he’s yet to ascertain the extent of the problem.

In Decline

Alvaro Negredo
More than 150,000 managers rolled the dice and captained the striker for Middlesbrough’s Double Gameweek and the Spaniard duly produced the slimmest of pickings.

Negredo’s 14.9% ownership base was never likely to hold onto him anyway – Boro still have to face three of the top four – but four measly points from his two Gameweek 34 outings has sparked an early, and probably rage-fuelled, exodus, with nearly 26,000 managers selling him already.

We can expect that to escalate over the next two days, though – Negredo has been sold by over 10,000 managers in the last 24 hours, more than any other player.

Alexis Sanchez
The Chilean midfielder remains the game’s riskiest proposition.

Ignore him and Fantasy Premier League’s leading points scorer has six matches to show that ignorance is not always bliss.

Keep or buy him in and we’ll be betting the house – or at least a hefty 11.5 – on a player with just two goals and an underwhelming 25 points from his last six league starts.

The jury remains out on the impact Arsenal’s new formation is having on Sanchez. He was moved back to the central striker role against Leicester City, with Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil flanking him, but that didn’t improve his output.

He managed just two shots, both from outside the area, with one hitting the bar. But he has scored twice in three matches in all competitions since the switch to a defensive three took place.

Sticking or twisting on Sanchez looks like being one of the biggest decisions as we prepare for our crucial final Wildcard of the season.

Son Heung-min
The general wisdom is that we’ll need three Spurs players in our sides from here on in.

Until recently, one of them was likely to be the South Korean midfielder.

But Mauricio Pochettino has created considerable doubt in our minds now. He used Son as a wing-back in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final and benched him at Selhurst Park last night.

A half-time switch to a four-man defence gave Son a second chance and he was a key part of an improved Spurs performance after the break, but there is no place for doubt when Pochettino’s charges have just five matches left to garner us points.

With Kane, Alli and Eriksen looking undroppable, Son’s 12.2% ownership have a decision to make – over 6,000 have already jumped ship over the last 24 hours.

Mamadou Sakho
A mini-rush to tap into Palace’s defensive assets for their Double Gameweek 34 didn’t include Sakho as he was ineligible to play in the first match against parent club Liverpool.

But the Eagles are undoubtedly a far tougher proposition with the Frenchman at the heart of their defence, so the knee injury he sustained against Spurs last night weakens the attraction of holding on to relatively cheap Palace defenders throughout the run-in.

Sakho looks highly likely to have played his final match this season, according to Sam Allardyce.

“He has hyperextended the knee. It is certainly serious enough to keep him out for who knows how long, we won’t know until we diagnose it, but if it is ligament it may be the end (of his loan spell), it may not.”

Those of us with Wildcards can weather the storm, but it’s not quite so simple for the rest.

With James Tomkins also currently sidelined, those looking for a budget enabler from the Palace back line ahead of attractive home matches with Burnley and their (albeit single) Gameweek 37 clash with Hull City could well be drawn to the 4.2-priced Martin Kelly.

Wilfried Zaha
Snapped up by over 144,000 FPL managers for Palace’s pair of fixtures, Zaha proved a bitter disappointment.

While Christian Benteke backers were rewarded with 14 points over the Double Gameweek, Zaha limped in with just three points to show for his troubles, with last night’s late booking merely adding injury to insult.

Already, Zaha is the third most transferred out midfielder in the Gameweek, despite that favourable upcoming home clash with the Clarets.

Although some 17% owners may look to hold for the Burnley encounter, trips to Man City and Man United in the final three suggest that Zaha looks set to depart many more squads once the weekend has passed, particularly for those set to wield wildcards in time for Double Gameweek 36.

OK, Here's a first airing of WC. (rp)
Any obvious flaws? - still have 0.6m itb

    .Cech Pickford
    Kompany Alonso Monreal Yoshida Davies
    Sanchez Alli Fabregas Fernandinho Albrighton
    Aguero Costa Gabbiadini

Obviously I'm punting on likes of Fernandinho & Davies is a bit of a gamble so just looking for any oversights.
    Thanks.

Man City are a nightmare however they have the best fixtures over the DGW.
I've avoided Aguero but I'm finding it hard to look elsewhere within the City ranks.
Fernandinho is a Pep fave and he does pop up with the odd goal and is well overdue.
Fernandinho & Fab are non template .
Downgrading Aguero would be great so I'm hoping Jesus gets a run out against United.

Here are the latest quotes about Arsenal's formation

    - on how he is finding the 3-4-3
"You know, for the style of play that the team has, it works really well. Sometimes you’ve just got to keep switching system and make the other teams just think about it for a second and I think the team is doing really good. No matter what system we play, I think the team is performing so we’ve just got to keep it going and enjoy every minute of it."

    - on our formation
"I finished with four at the back because when I took Gibbs off we moved to a four. We finished with four strikers: Welbeck, Giroud, Alexis and Ozil, plus we also had Ramsey who is quite offensive. We finished with four at the back because we absolutely had to win the game."

    - on it being important to have targetmen up front late on
"Yes, definitely. Sometimes you’ve just got to switch the tactics. I think the team played with great energy at the beginning and we were getting chances, we just weren’t efficient enough. But then, towards the end we knew that we would have our chances and the goal came at the end. I think it’s good credit to the team that we kept going, we were patient and then we got the goal."

To be honest. Arsenal struggled a lot and it was a lucky goal (Arsenal fan here). We are still not able to break down opponents defense and pretty much move the ball outside the box a lot.

But I definitely see Xhaka being more offensive in this formation. In the old formation he used to sit deep and only provide long balls and win challenges in between.

Sanchez's natural movement to drift towards the left wing, sometimes causes problem as an FPL owner. He then tries to put in a cross and hope that giroud would nick it in.

All of their 3 games for 3 CB's have been really shakey, but they have won them.
They there even more shakey with 4 at the back, and lost games before that though 😛

I'm going with Afobe as well. Right now I am on Rashford instead of Gabbi, a bit worried about Soton since they don't have anything to play for. Just wants team that has a lot to play for. Going with Afobe(cheap), Redmond(cheap and two doubles) and Yoshi(cheap and two doubles), Pickford (cheap) for the only players not have anything to play for. Apart from that I only have top4 contenders and are in the relegation battle.

He's apparently more nailed than Holden, but with Mustafi coming back it's hard to know. If he sticks with 3 at the back then Saul Goodman, but Monreal played at LCB this week, so it's far from a given who gets the third CB when Mustafi is back

It's what I'm doing on wildcard.

Keeping Alli and Eriksen - both solid, attacking options in their own right.

Getting Hazard and Costa... along with Alonso.

For me, it offers far better balance than going Eriksen, Alli, Kane with Hazard... it's also more budget friendly as well.

Kane is the more explosive option than Costa but as you say, Costa's fixtures are great and he looked bang up for it this week.

He could, but with Sam saying he wanted to rotate, I fear a rest for Zaha while king is torrid. We are similar situations (no wc, Zaha and rashford/negredo holders), and I'm leaning towards this move myself. I think we eventually want king instead of Zaha, and might as well do it now, cos king might get a haul this gw, and Zaha might do well, blank, or even get rested.

Well, except for bench boost 37, some cheap attacker on our teams can only play once, and something has to give. I'm likely going 3-5-2 with Anichebe, foregoing Gabby, and playing kane and Lukaku/Costa. We both need to sell our mid 6m forward (you negr do, me Rashford as I think he will suffer Valencia rotation), and I'm essentially replacing Rash with King, while creating cash to upgrade elsewhere for every gw except gw37, where I hope Anichibe gets a lucky goal.

So, no. I don't think think gabby plays all of those games, and I don't think he will score tons. I am going to instead go with one SGW hedge, King, as he is hot, and has easy games, and he is going to play for sure.

I'd save personally - Zaha to King makes sense but seems a little sideways this week, and I expect Zaha to start. It probably makes more sense to leave yourself with more options next week. Negredo for Gabb is a must imo, and perhaps you'll want to downgrade Zaha rather than upgrade, to allow Hazard in for Coutinho or Costa for Lukaku.

Which is my priority transfer in GW35? Gonna WC in 36 so only GW35 fixtures matter. Maybe a defender seeing as Valencia could be rested and Mawson and Gibson have toughies?

    A - Gibson > Blind
    B - Carroll > Gabbi
    C - Other?

    Valencia - Gibson - McAuley

Does tend to struggle a bit at the top teams, might be wise. Starting him over Anichebe is easier, I think 😆

GW37 - I am going to use bench boost.

    Cech/Pickford
    Alonso / Clichy / Stephens / Holgate / Davies
    Alli / Hazard / King / Sanchez / JWP
    Kane / Gabb /Aguero

I see many teams without Lukaku. DGW blindness or better value elsewhere?

I'll assess his attitude v CHE then decide, him or Costa.

    @RustYbz

I make a change on my WC

    Alonso & Stones > Vert & Clishy

    Is that better ?

Weak defence though. Wouldn't be surprised to se Clichy and Gabriel benched in some matches.

thoughts on this first WC draft?

    Jaku Pick

    Gabriel Vertongen/walker Alonso Yoshida Kelly
    King Haz sanchez Alli Sane

      not sure about Kelly

may as well just get Stephens and have the three saints players

      mid obviously awesome

can you downgrade another defender to get Rashford up there?

      1. tibollom

Thanks HMonkey - will have a look at maybe downgrading alonso/vert/walker for a cheaper alternative in those teams (or mahybe clichy ?)

Rashford you think is a definite starter, regardless of Europa? Also worrieed about not having a MUN defender in there.... Saints have really tough games in their DGW... Tough!!!

Very difficult king vert because of the fixture this week and less rotation

I 100 percent am. they have four games and I'll be happy if they keep just one clean sheet across all four.

Stephens and Yoshida or Stephens and Forster.

1 FT 4.9 m ITB (No WC left, BB 37)

    DDG (Pickford)
    Alonso Bailly Stephens (PVA Gibson)
    Hazard Sanchez Eriksen Sane JWP
    Rashford Benteke (Negredo)

Chasing hard so used WC in 34, thinking of saving FT to reassess for DGW 36 Thoughts on this?

Ya chasing with big gap to close so went with differentials on WC and left 4.9m ITB to reassess before the other DGWs. Initial plan was Kane and Gabbi in for Negredo and Benteke but not sure as my ML has Kane so thinking maybe Jesus or Giroud instead if there is evidence they will start

I think many have the same problem I do. Which one should I go for?

    A) 3-4-3 with Gabbi Kane Lukaku/Costa, De Roon 5th mid
    B) 3-5-2 with Anichebe instead of Gabbi and King 5th mid

      Yeah

too many midfielders I want and not as many strikers
