The Stock Check – Gameweek 37 – Wednesday

Southampton and Manchester United grind out a goalless draw at St Mary’s as Manolo Gabbiadini’s Fantasy misfortunes go from bad to worse in the penultimate match of double Gameweek 37.

On the Rise

Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens
The only defender to survive Claude Puel’s double Gameweek tinkering, Yoshida retained his role to start for the nineteenth successive league outing in last night’s clash with Man United.

A total of nine points accrued across the pair of matches against Middlesbrough and United was more than any member of the Saints’ backline as the St Mary’s outfit collected a fifth clean sheet in 10 attempts.

Owned by a mere 5% of FPL managers, Yoshida has now delivered 33 points in his previous six home appearances. He looks a secure final-day pick at home to a Stoke City side that has failed to score in six of their previous seven on the road.

Stephens was rested for the first match of the double only to return to the Southampton XI last night and earn two bonus points.

The youngster’s ability to collect bonus is key here. He has earned 10 additional points over those five clean sheets, compared with Yoshida’s five bonus across the same fixtures – potentially a decisive factor for those currently holding both and mulling over which to bench for the Stoke match. Southampton now have three shut-outs in four with Stephens and Yoshida in the heart of defence.

Over 62,000 FPL managers owned both Yoshida and Stephens, benefiting from 17 points over the Gameweek 37 fixtures.

In Decline

Manolo Gabbiadini
Rested for the weekend win at Middlesbrough, the Italian returned to Puel’s starting XI against the Red Devils.

But as far as his loyal 8% owners are concerned, Gabbiadini may as well have warmed the bench for all the good he did.

Failing quite spectacularly as a double Gameweek asset, the winter signing stepped up to miss a penalty and deliver zero points over the Saints’ pair of fixtures before being hauled off just after the hour-mark to put his chastened ownership out of their misery.

Gabbiadini, essentially, provided a meagre four points across back-to-back doubles and now has just a single assist in his last seven league outings – a far cry from the form that harvested four goals in his first three Gameweek appearances.

Over 18,000 FPL managers have already sold him out ahead of the home encounter with Stoke – yes, he may well start, but judging by last night’s output that clearly guarantees little going on the striker’s current form.

David de Gea
United’s most popular FPL player and the third most-owned (33%) in the game, the Spaniard missed out altogether as his side chalked up a sixteenth clean sheet of the campaign – level with Chelsea and second only to Spurs’ 17.

Those still holding De Gea will now need to rely on their second keepers or dip into the market after Jose Mourinho confirmed that the Spaniard will play no further part in the season.

“David? I think the first match against LA Galaxy in pre-season in Los Angeles. I hope to play Joel Pereira against Crystal Palace, I hope to play Sergio in the final and hopefully, we don’t have problems with these two keepers”.

With Eric Bailly limping off last night and Mourinho revealing his intentions to field a number of youngsters in Sunday’s clash with Palace ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League final against Ajax, there’s no surprise to see owners of the likes of Antonio Valencia (14,000+) and Marcus Rashford (18,000+) already selling and seeking alternatives.

Well after a dismal start my BB was a success with an actual 24. My next highest week was GW1 with 23! Difficult to quantify due to doing a late swap of Rash+Gabbi to Jesus+Anichebe and switching to 3-5-2 with Capoue starting instead of on my BB.

I've come out well on top though with Jesus's 19 points and Capoue's 9 over Rashford + Gabbi who did zip.

Pick 6 Anichebe 1 Yoshi 9 Stephens 8 = 24 which would have been 32 but at the detriment of my starting XI.

    🙂

Who is the most overated player in the league? Not necessarily a bad player but overated.

For me its Hazard. Way too inconsistent and a bit of a lightweight. Doesnt even get the full 90mins in most games. Bottler of big games too.

Astonished if he gets mooted moves to Chelsea or Man Utd

Sheer laziness off the ball. Can't see Conte wanting a striker who does no pressing or teamwork

Man Utd would be swapping Ibra for the same type -- they need pace and dynamism

Agree with you on the Hazard point.

I also think Sanchez although great for Arsenal at times, he's like a poor Ronaldo (Which isn't the worst insult), can be petulant and way too demanding of the ball. Arsenal look scared to not pass to him despite other players being in better positions.

I also think Firmino is utter tripe. Ross Barkley has a lot to answer for too...

      3 goals against City
      1 goal against United
1 unbelievable solo goal against Arsenal#
      2 against Everton (19 pointer!)

Hazard has been very very good this season and has done well against the big teams from what I've seen. I do think he's a bit overrated (when compared to Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar etc.) but he's one of the prems best.

BB possibly Failure? 19 points so as good as a 19 point triple captain (Presuming I'd captain him anyways).

Other bench scores this season, 24,19,37 &19. On top of that 18,18,17&17.

Tbf, out of 38 gameweeks to play it. Joint 3rd out of 38 isn't that bad, could've been more too but for Holgate & Anichibe, hard done by 8 points there really.

I played all my DGW players in my '11' just to keep the page tidy, but in reality my bench was Caballero, Holgate, Stephens, Kante which gave me 16.

I would have played Llorente & King over Stephens and Kante

      • 8 Years

Personally I'm slightly disappointed. I got 26 points from the bench, which is a good haul, but a bench boost last week and TC this week would've comfortably outscored what I did.

        • 14 Years
        6 years, 11 months ago

Depends on how your TC last week went, did you get less than was on your bench last week from that one player?

26 is the same as having Sanchez TC really.

        1. Pierce34
          • 8 Years

I did the maths - my team got 96 points last week and 160 this week.

With bench boost in GW 36 and TC37, it would've been 102 and 170 respectively.

          1. Pierce34
            • 8 Years
            6 years, 11 months ago

Maybe that's a slightly generous estimate because it relies on me playing King and benching Gabbiadini - even with Gabbi in the starting XI we're looking at 102 and 161 points, i.e. outscoring my current team by 5.

It's the BB36 that outscored TC36 and makes the big difference.

Lads, how much do you rate having a good first 2 gameweeks as important to your season??

For me, any team I look at that has done really well, has had a solid first two gameweeks and are in the top 50k.

From there on in you don't need to go to risky to maintain the rank. Obviously some solid GW3/4 performances will lift you up the ranks BUT the gap increases and increases each week... I reckon I'll build my team for the first 2 weeks with the 3rd week in mind as well, then look to wildcard with a good rank...

Yeah, forget the 6 week season ticker stuff. Solid 2 weeks then you can afford to make a few hits, build team value etc.

Like you said just having a solid first two is good enough. Doesn't need to be great, just as long as it isn't great. I think what is more important than having a good rank though is how balanced your initial squad is.

    Story of my chips:
WC1: GW6. Team not in total mess but had to get those players in form, price rises and so on.

TC: GW27 Aguero, 9 points x 3, ohh well, not great but he had tasty fixtures and good to get it over with knowing WC and BB would be easier timing.

AOA: GW35. Crap. Thought Valencia might get rested, but benched Alonso against Lukaku. Alonso got 6 points but lot of my attackers 1-2 points, but didnt have a clue who I should bench. Rather useless chip.

WC2: GW35. Ready to rumble with those 2 DGW coming up.

BB: Now. Bench got 27 points from bench but best until now from bench was 25 so couldnt be better. (but had Amat and Diomande most of the time). Currently on 166 with 3 Spurs to go. OR 1547 and hope I can get into top 1k.

So what is the most valuable chip?....No doubt its the second WC!!

I agree, this second wildcard has allowed me to have the (crappy) team I wanted right up to the DGW's then bring them all in at once. Rather than the blank week in 28 where I prepared for weeks with crappy West Brom players in my team...

Bench Boost I think is more likely to bring you 15-25 points if played in the correct GW with TC being a gamble too. Just got to nail the right gameweeks.

I got 4 red arrows in a row after my gw6 wc

That 2nd wc is very important to set you up for the doubles but that 1st wc is a bit of a 50/50 lots of managers that pulled it would have been better off if they did not use it at the time

2nd Wildcard is definitely the most valuable of the lot. TC and BB come down to which dgw's you use them in in combination eg. TC in 37 but BB in 36 might be better than TC in 36 but BB in 37

How much do ye think Alli/Eirksen/Kane will be priced at next season?
A treble up might be out of the question if they are priced out of it

9.5 or 10.0m for Alli. 9.0m for Eriksen. 11.5m for Kane.

I would go for a £9.0m Eriksen in a heartbeat

I didn't realise Kane was so cheap 2 seasons back! 6.0m, must've been gold dust. Reckon I've missed two amazing seasons of FPL with Mahrez/Vardy last year too...

Think the concern will be Spurs going for wide players like Mahrez and Lemar to boost their squad.. could be rotation

Alli and Eriksen should be the same price. Started this season at the same price (8.5) and scored the same amount of points. 9.5 minimum, probably 10. Kane will be 11.5 or 12.

I think Butland and Ozil (if he doesn't leave) will be good picks next season (both should go down in price compared to the start of this season). Sane might also be under priced. I don't think Kane will be above 11.5, but could be wrong there. Alli and Erik around the 10M mark imo.

If Butland is 4.5 he's straight in my team. Ozil at 9.0 could be good value.

Well played, nothing worse than a bragging ML rival when he's not done the business. I did this last week being 100 points clear, gained a further 64 points this week.

Liverpool match now bound to be live on TV in the UK on Sunday; their 29th live (of 38) this PL season. A record for one club in one season.

    1 FT/0.4 ITB

    Caballero
    Alonso/Mawson
    Kante/Hazard/Eriksen/Sane/King
Jesus/Kane/Gabbi (ugh-got him at signing and held ever since)

    Bench - Monreal/Baines/Valencia/ Schmeichel
    Playing AOA

Moving out Valencia to cheapest Def to pick up $$ - leaves me with 9.0
Move Gabbi to one of Benteke/Vokes/Giroud (other)?
Will result in -4 ... should I consider moving either Kante or Hazard as well?? Any other thoughts?
    Thanks!!
