The Numbers Game – Manchester City

Next up in our summer series of team-by-team analysis of the 2016/17 campaign are Manchester City.

We start by checking out the team performance levels over the previous campaign to look for any trends of improvement before assessing the Citizens’ standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The arrival of Pep Guardiola helped the Etihad side up their points total from 66 to 78 last term, yet they finished some 15 points off the summit for the second successive campaign, claiming third position in the Spaniard’s first year in charge.

City also improved their goal tally, from 71 to 80, which was again the third best on offer, six behind Spurs at the summit.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Keep on bringing kane in and out and cannot decide on jesus vs aguero:

    Forster (elliot)
    Trippier, milner, cedric, monreal (naughton)
    Kdb, willian, tadic, eriksen (carroll)
    Jesus, lukaku (fletcher)

    Any thoughts to improve?

Worried about lack of kane and inclusion of tadic

I'd get Aguero and then you can easily switch to Jesus if needs be.
Personally avoiding Kane at the start of the season, will probably look to get him in for GW5 form depending.
      Also Forster is terrible

Yes imo, looking at Kane, Eriksen and Trippier individually I'd say it's okay to triple up

I'm not too convinced by Milner. Aren't they going to sign someone?

The other thing is triple Saints. They do have an excellent set of starting fixtures, but we've been let down before, so I'd be weary of that.

As for the lack of Kane, that's a problem I've had assembling my squad, you can't squeeze them all in.

I'm sorry but I can't understand why people are picking Tom Ince, if you watch the championship you will know that he is a bang average player, and only had like 1 good month of form last season. Maybe Wagner can get the best out of him but honestly I would avoid him at all costs, only rated because of his father.

This is how I'm set currently, subject to change 1,453 more times.

    Foster
    Betrand - Trippier - Cedric
Ramsey - Pogba - Willian - Alli - Redmond (not sure if I'm keen on him)
    Kane - Lukaku

    Elliott - McBurnie - Simpson - Dunk

Quite liking the idea of Bertrand now but think I'd probably keep Cedric still.

Don't really want Carroll as a 5th mid but I do agree about Redmond, not stuck on him to be honest. May go for a WBA midfielder or something instead and go for the fixtures.

Expect them to be involved in high scoring games as they need to score more goals than the opponents to win games. (due to their leaky )defences

Jesus' conversion rate was ridiculous last season. But given it is far beyond Messi's, it's fair to say that it's an unsustainable level. Also he only started 8 games, so the sample size is not large enough to give a true representation.

    I predict regression.

    1. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 11 months ago

Fair, but this 'sustainable' vs 'unsustainable' threshold you talk about appears to be arbitrary, doesn't it?

Like you want a player with the highest goal conversion rate, except if their goal conversion rate is above X%.

Do you base the threshold on anything statistical, out of interest?

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years
        6 years, 11 months ago

I'm not saying you shouldn't want him, it just means his output should decrease to within the average range. So don't expect that level of ppg next season!

      2. Prokoptas
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 11 months ago

The idea of sustainability vs unsustainability is built on more than simply conversion rate, or whatever your metric of choice is. A huge factor built into it is sample size and, to a lesser extent, the correlation coefficient of that variable in terms of its repeatibility year-on-year.

In the case of Jesus, we know that his sample size is small and his conversion rate is several standard deviations above them mean. Further, we know correlation from one year to the next is not strong at all. Therefore, we have reason to doubt his ability to repeat.

But Aguero and Kane also have conversion rates above the mean. The difference in their numbers compared to Jesus is that they have shown across multiple seasons that they are capable of sustaining numbers 1+ standard deviations above the mean. To say their numbers are unsustainable is illogical because we have actual proof of them sustaining it from one season to the next.

Jesus will almost certainly see a regression - his numbers are above even the top echelon strikers. But if he can only regress into the Kane/Aguero strike rate range, then we will be very happy! That's just an exceptionally difficult thing to do.

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 11 months ago

I'm sorry, but you need to speak to me in simpler language.

Jesus' conversion rate is several SD above the mean. What mean? All players of that year? Of Man City. Of PL history. Of players who score more than 20 goals?

Do we really know that correlation from one year to the next is not strong at all? You only compared 2 years in the Plexiglas article.

As far as I understand it, it is illogical to say something is unsustainable when we have evidence of other players doing it in other leagues. I'm not arguing that Jesus will sustain his output, but I'm arguing that the perhaps the term is misleading, and dangerous to the common reader's FPL teams. Perhaps 'likely to regress' or something would me more transparent.

GB has a threshold in his unsustainable table of 25%. I had no idea this was a specific SD above a particular mean...

      I agree, but when.

I was predicting regression for Vardy all through his 11 scoring games in a row sequence. I was right, of course, but only a season later. 🙂

Timing is everything. Jesus could start the first game, score and go on a crazy run. Or he could be benched for Aguero, struggle when he comes on and not score for 6 weeks. That's one reason why the early season is a bit of a lottery until there are some settled patterns to see.

    6. Diva

I'm not convinced on Sane, you'd be better off putting in someone like Tadic, then bringing Walker in.

Kane has been involved in 95 goals in just 101 pl starts.

78 goals 17 assists in 101 pl starts. (source: transfermarkt). Now thats some record to ignore for non owners 😉

Kane will win the golden boot again and will be my captain most weeks. He is a freak of nature.

Too risky not to have him, just hope he doesn't start off slow this time

Trippier certainly has the superior delivery but to say Walker can't cross is silly.

    Foster | Elliott
    Lindelof | Trippier | Cedric | Daniels | Rangel
    Alli | Ramsey | ??? | RLC | Carroll
    Lukaku | Kane | ???

    1. Jesus and Tadic/Redmond/6.5
    2. Firmino and Sane
    3. Aguero and Ward Prowse
    4. Austin and KDB

Or something else... 17.0 to spend (4-3-3)

Guys what do you think of this team:
    GK: De gea (4.0)
DEF: trippier, cedric, lindelof (dunk, rangel)
    MID: willian/cesc, ramsey/zaha, stanislas/ritchie, tadic, (4,5 - probably carrol)
    FOR: kane, lukaku, jesus
    So my doubts are:
    A) Is it worth to start with 3 heavy hitters upfront?
    B) if so what are the best options in mid for 6-7 brackets - i have highlighted the most appealing to me.

Basically i have tried to have at least 1 player of top teams

What are your thoughts on kolasinac & Monreal?
    Both nailed or not?
If both nailed then who plays WB&CB role in back 3 formation?

This article take the same data as the Plexiglas Principle article, but uses it to predict trends in the opposite direction.

Some editorial consistency or guidance would be great for readers who lap this stuff up and suffering from clinical indecision, because it's quite confusing.

I like both articles, but there's not enough rigorous criticism and discussion. And without the discussion, we need to trust that FFS is doing the criticism and discussion behind the scenes or (preferably) transparently.

I have to say, though that I think I will get the most out of my new membership through articles like this, which do make interesting things salient and digestible. So thank you to Paul for this one. 🙂
