Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre-Season

A loss for Chelsea, mayhem for Spurs and wins for Brighton and Burnley as the pre-season warm-ups return.

Stoke City are dulled by the Blades, however, despite the best efforts of Xherdan Shaqiri.

Here are the notes from Tuesday’s action…

Chelsea 2 Bayern Munich 3

Goals from Marcos Alonso and Michy Batshuayi took some of the sting out of a first pre-season loss for Chelsea as new striker Alvaro Morata made his debut.

The Spaniard claimed the assist for Batshuayi’s goal, flicking on a Cesc Fabregas corner, as the Blues belatedly recovered from being three down just before the break.

In an otherwise poor defensive display from the champions, Alonso’s goal, set up by Victor Moses, would have at least been heartening for the 13.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers with a chunky 7.0 tied up in the defender.

If the Spaniard is to deliver on his premium price this season, he’ll need to come close to replicating last year’s stellar campaign that harvested six goals, provided five assists and kept 15 clean sheets.

His performance against Bayern hinted at exactly that, although there were some uncharacteristic frailties on display at the back, with Thibaut Courtois and Cesar Azpilicueta particularly unconvincing as the Germans took control of the match.

Chelsea will not face many teams as potent as Bayern, however.

Young attacker Jeremie Boga again stood in for Pedro as he recovers from his almighty collision with Arsenal’s David Ospina, while Andreas Christensen played for just over an hour at the heart of Chelsea’s frequently troubled defence.

After breezing past the Gunners, this was a major reality check for Chelsea, with the 11.1%-owned Morata’s assist one of the few positives to emerge.

Chelsea XI: Courtois (Eduardo 74); Azpilicueta, Christensen (Luiz 63), Cahill; Moses, Kante, Fabregas (Pasalic 86), Alonso (Tomori 74); Willian, Batshuayi (Baker 86), Boga (Morata 63).
Subs not used: Caballero, Bulka, Kalas, Clarke-Salter, Scott, Remy.

Tottenham Hotspur 2 Roma 3

Another day, another high-scoring match for Spurs, but this time they were on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller won at the death by rivals Roma.

Late strikes from Harry Winks, from a Vincent Janssen rebound, and then Janssen himself, who swept home a Georges-Kevin Nkoudou cross, brought Spurs back from a two-goal deficit.

But the Italians had the last laugh in a match most notable for a wretched refereeing display from Hilario Grajeda.

The American official gave Roma a contentious penalty, denied Spurs what looked like a clear spot-kick of their own, watched a mini-brawl break out among the players and then tried, and completely failed, to send off Spurs coach Miguel D’Agostino.

Other than that, he had a great night.

Mauricio Pochettino mixed and matched, using three at the back in the first-half and a flat back four after the break, with key players such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld given the full 90 minutes. Youngster Josh Onomah was utilised in a central support role.

But the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market – chairman Daniel Levy going public with his belief that rivals’ spending is ‘unsustainable’ – and worries over the effect playing home matches at Wembley will have on the side have combined to dampen interest in Spurs stars.

Alli (38.0%) and Kane (34.1%) are highly popular FPL choices, but just four other team-mates make it into double figures for ownership.

By contrast, Chelsea have eight assets owned by at least 10% of FPL managers, with two injured players – Pedro and Eden Hazard – likely to join them once fit.

Spurs XI First half: Vorm; Carter-Vickers, Alderweireld, Vertonghen; Trippier, Dier, Dembele, Walker-Peters; Onomah, Alli; Kane.

Spurs XI Second half: Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Winks, Dembele; Eriksen, Alli, Georgiou; Kane.

Southend 0 Brighton and Hove Albion 3

Solly March made it three goals in two matches for Brighton as Chris Hughton’s men again gave lower league opposition short shrift.

The midfielder scored twice, and veteran striker Glenn Murray added a third, while new Chelsea loan signing Izzy Brown was thrown straight into the side and earned post-match praise from his boss for his versatility.

“Izzy can play on either flank, but we know he can play off the front as well. Eventually, he could play as a number nine, but I don’t see him as a nine, I see him as one that is going to play off a front man or in a wide area.”

Assists came from Liam Rosenior, Markus Suttner and Murray.

Hughton chose to rest a number of first-teamers ahead of another pre-season run-out, on Saturday, against Norwich City.

It’s also worth noting that centre-back Uwe Huenemeier – priced at 4.0 in FPL and owned by 8.4% – played the full 90 minutes alongside Lewis Dunk in the heart of defence.

Brighton XI: Maenpaa; Rosenior (Cox 63), Huenemeier, Dunk (Tilley 82), Suttner (White 63); March (Molumby 82), Sidwell (LuaLua 63), Stephens (Dallison 82), Brown (Ince 63); Gross (Towell 82); Murray (Connelly 71).

Preston North End 1 Burnley 2

Robbie Brady was at the heart of Burnley’s win over Lancashire rivals Preston, with the goals coming from Jonathan Walters and Sam Vokes.

The Irish midfielder’s set-piece skills were a threat throughout.

His free-kick found Tom Anderson, who headed across goal for Walters to score, before the fit-again Vokes hit the winner, applying the slightest of touches to a Kevin Long header, again from a Brady dead-ball delivery.

Manager Sean Dyche’s latest buy, the experienced full-back Phil Bardsley, took no part in the match, but most of the Clarets’ first-team squad gained more valuable pitch-time.

Walters now has two goals and an assist since joining the club, while the productive Brady has returned a goal and assist.

But FPL interest in Burnley players remains low in light of the club’s tough start to the season – they travel to Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Everton over the first seven Gameweeks – and only Tom Heaton and Ben Mee enjoy notable ownership.

Burnley XI: Heaton (Pope, 46); Lowton (C Long 81), Taylor (Ward 71), Anderson, K Long (Mee 64); Brady (Barnes 71), Gudmundsson (Ulvestad 75), Westwood (Defour 64), Cork (Hendrick 64); Walters (Agyei 81), Vokes (Gray 81).

Sheffield United 2 Stoke City 1

Xherdan Shaqiri was on the scoresheet for Stoke City as Kurt Zouma’s debut for the club ended in defeat.

The Swiss international combined with Ramadan Sobhi to level for the Potters before a late goal gave the hosts the win.

Chelsea loanee Zouma played the first half alongside Ryan Shawcross at the centre of the Stoke defence, but it was Shaqiri who caught the eye as he looks to take on more attacking responsibility following the sale of Marko Arnautovic to West Ham.

Elsewhere, defender Geoff Cameron was used in midfield for the first half, allowing Joe Allen to play in a more attacking role, before Hughes shuffled his pack after the break.

It should also be noted that Bardsley’s departure to Burnley seemingly cements Glen Johnson’s start at right-back or right wing-back; like Cameron, he is available as a 4.5 Stoke defender in FPL.

Stoke City XI: Grant; Johnson (Edwards 69), Pieters (Tymon 69) Shawcross (Muniesa 80), Zouma (Crouch 46); Fletcher (Adam 80) Cameron (Wollscheid 80); Shaqiri (Diouf 73), Allen (Imbula 80), Ramadan; Berahino (Bojan 73).

I will definitely win FPL now.

    DDG, 4.0
    Trippy, Mendy, Alonso, Bellerin, 4.0
    Willian, Alli, Phillips, 4.5, 4.5
    Chicharito, Augero (c), Lukaku, 4.5

      Not feeling this.

If Chicharito / Phillips doesn't fire or Aguero gets rotated then, you have no options or backup. This might be my lack of knowledge but, is Mendy not a rotation risk too?

Chicharito is a goal machine. I don't think Augero would still be in Man City if he has a rotation role. I expect nothing from Phillips. Mendy is their only left foted fullback.

      Mine looks better:

      Foster - (Heaton)
      Trippier - Monreal - Cedric - Bailly - (Yedlin)
      Willian - Alli - Coutinho - (Carroll) - (Cork)
      Aguero - Lukaku - Austin

It's a very nice team. But it is vulnerable to players being rested. Aguero IS a rotation risk - I thought the events of last season made that clear. Jesus is an incredible talent who Pep clearly loves, and will sometimes play through the middle in place of Aguero, who has stamina and fitness issues. Mendy is a sound starter but is also subject to Pep's occasional rotation habits, and Danilo has clearly been brought as a back up for both full backs. Your issue will be carrying a 4.5, the lack of Kane, and the difficulty in upgrading weaker options easily (Philips and William) because of so many cheap players. Rotation/injuries could leave you with two 4.5s or worse in your first 11.

Decided to remain flexible from the off. 5m in the bank to upgrade to any attacker. Just can't decide who I want, so I'll get whoever looks good gwk2. Here is my team:

    Forster
    Bertrand Kompany Trippier
    Willian Fabregas Ramsey Eriksen
    Chicarito Kane Austin

    Elliott Carroll Hummeier Tuanzebe

Tuanzebe is deliberate, I don't want 3 MU in my team at all, I don't trust them at all, especially attacking wise.

5 million is too much mate.

Just to chica to Lukaku. You can transfer out Lukaku for anyone you want bar Kane who you already have

thanks mate, just not keen on lukaku. I think he'll get less than last year. Mourinho's style is pants. I will get one of their defenders if they are looking settled and solid.

5m in your pocket is a complete waste.

You say you want 5m to upgrade a striker if you need to. Surely the better way is to start with a big hitter and downgrade if you don't like....?

      1. Evil Greg

Well, I expect I am more likely to lose one of Willian or Fabregas GWK1, probably Fabregas whose days in the team are surely limited.

No, it is not a complete waste.

Downgrading means that you 'waste' a transfer freeing up funds. If he, for whatever reason has to do an upgrade of any player after gw1 he'd be taking -4 points. 4 points is more than you get for your average 5m investment.

Still, I think that 5m may be a bit hefty, and particularly in GW1 I'd be more inclined to find a team you really believe in. This due to the fact that the information you get from GW1 will not be based on more than a single gameweek of data, which is not much.

Maybe my point wasn't made properly.

What I was trying to say in simple terms that I would rather start with Lukaku or aguero and have 0 ITB over playing Austin or Hernandez with 5M in the bank.

If anyone disagrees with that then I'd be shocked 😆

Javier hernandez league starts(excluding bench apps) in the last 3 seasons. (Transfermarkt)

    Madrid

    2014-15: 8 starts 5 goals 6 assists

    Leverkusen

    2015-16: 25 starts 16 goals 2 assists

    2016-17: 20 starts 11 goals 3 assists

Very decent stats. Now with experience in his side and starting regularly could be great fpl pick. Agree?

Few many thought why i exclude bench apps as he's known to be a super sub in pl. unlike in epl he got very few returns from bench in last 3 seasons

I like your midfield. In real life. Not so much fantasy-wise. KDB is a big question. Willian also. Coutinho might leave.

Cheers for the feedback - Willian begins the season, and his contributions per minute were incredible last season. KDB is a means of getting into that City side, with a player who is about as set in stone as it gets in a Pep side. 199 points was a good return too, despite a lack of goals. Coutinho will be swapped for Salah or Mane if he does leave.

West Ham 4 away games in first 5!

GW 1 away at United. Surely it's a wait and see with Hernandez.

Possibly but I have kind of learnt that fixtures are almost irrelevant for attackers these days. No team can defend so anyone can score anywhere

Say that to the Rooney haters on here who I think is a better pick from the start.

Well for what it's worth I think Rooney is a decent pick, but I also rate Sandro at Everton too so want to see who is best first.

Definitely a wait and see with Sandro. Young, unproven in the Premiership.
Rooney looks motivated and might be on some set pieces as well.

    Would you rather have:

    B) DDG, Dawson, Mkhi, Firmino

Assume Mkhi is nailed as a starter for gw1 please.

Francis is a risk - very likely he is a sub with Ake back...

      Expect that - looks great!

      How about my team?

      Foster / Elliot
      Walker / Daniels / Tripper/ Yedlin / Blind
      Coutinho / Willian / Zaha / Tadic / Carroll
      Kane / Lukaku / Austin

      Thoughts?

    Sane Willian Salah Alli (Carroll)
    Lukaku Morata Austin

Any city fans on here care to try to predict city defense lineup.

Danillo looks a bargain, where will he likely play? Or will he start?

Not a fan of anyone but this is my best guess.

      Ederson
      Walker, Kompany, Stones, Mendy

      May rotate

If Danillo is a starter then expect lots of goals conceded.

      https://www.mancity.com/news/first-team/first-team-news/2017/july/man-city-v-real-madrid-pep-guardiola-team-news

Danilo's versatility, meanwhile, was clearly a factor in the move for him, with Guardiola adding: "He can play right full back, and of course left and even can play in midfield. He can play in several positions - he's a player with potential and I’m grateful he’s here with us."

There is a nailed-on defender, with good fixtures available for £4.5 million who got 4 goals & 5 assists last season and has already assisted a goal in pre-season

Yet he is in hardly any drafts

    Hart | Elliot
    Trippier | Cedric | Mee | Daniels | Yedlin
    Salah | Mane | Zaha | Phillips | Carroll
    Lukaku | Jesus | Hernandez

    Mee and Yedlin gives you:

It seems as if everyone is including Hernandez like there is no tomorrow. He starts with 3 away games, two of which are against tough defences. There is also the potential that he won't start the first match because of his confederations cup involvement, and therefore the lack of pre-season training.

Surely he is better as a buy in GW4? When he, and WH, have settled a little and the fixtures improve.

If he has a high ownership, which he invariably will, he might even be subject to a price drop if he starts on the bench against United and returns a 1 pointer.

Are the likes of Morata and Lacazette who are unproven in the Premier League going straight in your GW1 team or are you waiting until they have played a few games

    Any ideas would be welcomed

      Laca yes, Morata no.

Mainly because I see no other Arsenal value, but Willian to start for Chelsea is a way in..

Lacazette is no worry for me, superb player, proven on international level. Will be main target at Arsenal, probably even with penalties.

I can see both being in the starting XI, at one point I had Lacazette, but decided to move for Lukaku and Kane. Who's to say they come out and misfire in GW1. Willing to take my chances though.

I've had in since the first team building attempt, but now he's turned to Kane, due to Kane's experience (and explosivity) in PL
