Sky Sports Fantasy Football – The Overhaul

Sky Sports Fantasy Football makes a return as a regular on these pages this season and, as of this evening, our pre-season analysis of the game gets underway.

We start by plunging headfirst into the most dramatic change introduced for 2017/18. The Overhaul is a new feature that looks set to literally transform the way we approach the game.

Similar to the Fantasy Premier League wildcard, this allows us to completely revamp our squads on two occasions over the season. However, there is a key difference with the Sky Sports Overhaul, as it is restricted for use during two distinct one-week windows.

This alters the way we approach our entire initial squad selection.

Here’s why…

“The first Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 4 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 5. The second Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 28 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 29. You will be able to make unlimited transfers during those periods until the first game day deadline”

With this in mind, it makes sense that our starting XI should focus solely on the opening three Gameweeks.

Following that, the international break affords us the opportunity to revisit our team, armed with three weeks of player form and data to help us rebuild.

Prior to the season kick-off on August 11, we will be basing our player list analysis articles around the “pre-overhaul” top targets, before revisiting each position to give a “post overhaul” view on line-ups.

Beyond our initial selection, the Overhaul also has far reaching implications on our transfer policy during the season.

Overhaul Tactics

The 40 transfers at our disposal can now be broken up and distributed over three distinct window periods.

  • The three-Gameweek period from August 11 until September 9, prior to the first Overhaul.
  • The 20-Gameweek period from September 9 until February 24, prior to the second Overhaul.
  • The 11-Gameweek period from February 24 onwards, after the second Overhaul.

Prior to the first Overhaul, it looks sensible to limit transfers to the bare minimum.

The best approach here is to pick an initial squad with good fixtures and with captains available for each match day – in our forthcoming articles, we will look to help guide you with this.

Of course, form, injuries and general misfortune could combine to play their part and derail that strategy.

However, our general rule with our intial selection should be to target assured starters or “nailed on” assets. This is always important but is made all the more paramount when you are essentially picking a team for the opening three Gameweeks.

Another viable tactic would be to use one or two transfers in a bid to get off to a flying start, covering all the major captains and looking for any “two for one” scenarios that the fixture schedule can offer us.

For example, by starting the season with an Arsenal asset for Friday night’s fixture at home to Leicester, then shipping them to acquire a Manchester City player for Saturday’s trip to Brighton, offers two possible captains and the extra player for a single transfer. It can also allow you to split your Arsenal/Man City budget in one team slot.

In terms of spending transfers, the Overhaul period two looks set to be the time frame where Sky Sports managers will use the bulk of their 40 trades.

This spell covers the vast majority of the season and the busy Christmas period while some of these weeks are essentially double Gameweeks.

In the past, experienced Sky Sports managers would use transfers on extra captain days and gain from “two for one” situations as best they could. However, the need to manage 40 transfers over the course of the campaign limited this tactic to rare occasions.

The Overhaul is set to shake this up, offering us the opportunity to be thriftier with our transfers.

Indeed, if we can select a solid XI and get our defence right after the first Overhaul, then extra captains and “two for ones” should take up the bulk of our future swaps, providing we can avoid being cursed by injuries and suspensions.

The second Overhaul arrives in the international break in Gameweek 28 – February 17.

Getting to that last Overhaul with around 10 transfers remaining – thus preparing for the fixture pile-up and inevitable rotation – should be a realistic goal.

Of course, with this being a new feature, it’s difficult to gauge the tactics and impact it can have on our seasons until we have first-hand experience.

If you have some alternative strategies on the use of Overhaul, then please let us know your views in the comments.

Thoughts on the following, managed to fit Kane without destroying my team 🙂

    Forster
    Danilo Bertrand Trippier Bailly
    KDB Alli Pogba
    Lukaku Austin Kane

    Subs: Elliot Carroll Loftus-cheek Rangel

Looks like a very good starting 11 but that bench could give you fits. I'd find a safer choice for guaranteed minutes instead of Danilo if you prefer to keep the format

Not convinced by Mane as yet, likewise Gabbiadini (doubts over him vs. Austin).

Those are the two that i'm really thinking about.
I really like the idea of Gabs: more nailed than Austin, decent history of goalscoring and obviously the fixtures but at that price he's far from a sure thing. I do think if he's going to get more minutes than Austin than that is valuable considering their run to start the season.

Mane I feel the same and i've been doing research on how the spurs trio scored in bunches last year as I may well replaced him with Eriksen and start with all 3 of Erik-Alli-Kane. That is also risky.

At the end of the day I could just do Austin and Mane > KDB and Austin but I kind of like having Mane as a very strong differential and i'm comfortable for now with gabs

See above for why I prefer Gabbi instead but there's certainly a legitimate case for Austin as he would enable either Mane > KDB or Yoshida > Trippier.

Think both of those moves make me feel a little too templatey but i'll have to give it a think

Lukakus previous performances have been patchy. When he goes On a run of scoring he absolutely smashes it for 3/4 games in a row and then at times goes missing. I think he'll be a season regular for me. There'll be downtimes but I wouldn't want to miss his purple patches either.

Appreciate this. My concern isn't Lukaku's hunger but Mourinho's tactics. How many men will he throw forward in support of Lukaku once they go a goal up?

It's a real toughie for me. I'm erring to Kane and Jesus as my main two because of this.

So realised I've come down to 2 drafts for my FPL team, dilemma is one my head prefers and the other my heart prefers:

    1) My Head:

    Foster
    Alonso | Daniels | Kolasinac
    KDB | Milivojevic | Coutinho | Ritchie
    Austin | Kane | Lukaku

    4.0m GK | Suttner | T. Carroll | 4.0m def

    2) My heart:

    DDG
    Alonso | Daniels | Mee | Suttner
    Sanchez | Milivojevic | Coutinho
    Austin | Kane | Aguero

    4.0m GK | T.Carroll | RLC | 4.0m def

    Follow my head or heart?

So are you criticising the formation?

              If Milli makes a good 4th mid in a 343, then he's a good 3rd mid in a 433, right?

It's hard to know exactly what the problem is when someone says "too heavy" or "too light" in a certain position.

I'm criticizing three crap options in midfield. I don't think Milli makes a good 4th mid in anything.

                  • 8 Years
                  6 years, 10 months ago

Why is it bad to have 3 'crap' options in midfield? Your opinion that Milli makes a crap 4th mid is valid and relevant, but it's not the same criticism that there are 3 of something.

People often have 1 crap mid, another not great def, and a non-playing def. I'm asking genuinely so I can find out why having 3 playing bench players (one possibly on pens, and another who MIGHT actually be great value) is bad simply because they are midfielders?

Is it balance? flexibility? How exactly do they miss out on points? Because this person obviously believes that these teams will get more points in general by utilisting these players. So what's the massive cost that he's paying?

                    Hey mate,

I've trialled 3 x budget mids, but to compensate that, I think you have to go with 3 big strikers; say Kane, Lukaku and Jesus. That way you can get away with a 433 or 523.

                    1. Deulofail
                      • 8 Years
                      6 years, 10 months ago

Yeah I had the big three but I downgraded Lukaku to Jesus to get Walters (to play every other game) with the weak midfielders to get picked on the spare weeks for the final slot.

I don't really see it as 'getting away' with anything, though, except the most valuable players I see in the player list! 😀

I could always get Lukaku back, but I don't want to buy him because of ownership or because he has a higher price tage, but only because I'm convinced he's worth the sacrifice of the 1.0 spent elsewhere

I'm a fan 🙂 Direct and scores goals.. what's not to like!

Just will be interesting to see if Henderson pings those balls to the left flank instead of the right, a few times. With Coutinho on the left cutting in, Mane was always the through ball.

Thoughts on Herrera and Mkhitaryan following the Matic signing? Will Herrera continue in the double pivot alongside Matic and free up Pogba to play more advanced? Where would that leave Mkhitaryan who has arguably been United's best player in pre-season? Herrera's been playing well too.

    1. UnitedFan
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Herrera should get more forward too, but can he be a fantasy option? Not imo. Pogba will be further up. Mkhi looks a great punt and differential, but minutes are a concern.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years

Certainly is a minefield. Pogba and Lukaku now look the only attacking fantasy options for United.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

I was thinking this. Instead of Martial, maybe? Rashford's spot to lose on the right, surely. Am a bit confused as I though United were looking good with Pogba playing slightly deeper and Mkhi driving through the middle.

It's Pogba v Mkhi for sure. On last season's evidence Mkhi has more potential but will he play?

          1. Twisted Saltergater
            • 14 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

Perhaps we'll see a 532 with Herrera, Pogba and Matic and Lukaku and Rshford up top? The alternative must be a genuine 433 (as opposed to a 4231) with Martial and Rashford not tracking back so much.

    3. Skalla
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Yes think Utd could switch to 4-3-3 with Pogba allowed more freedom alongside Herrera /Matic and Mkhi with Rashford on the wings, but will be rotated with Lingard/Mata so not a great option until we know for sure!

I don't see the point in Abraham. Get some fodder in there and pump and extra mile into your first 11.

Then when the value picks and form players emerge you can just downgrade......then your strength in depth will emerge. Downgrade Tammy and upgrade Dunk to Daniels for example

Thinking of going a bit contrarian to start the year and building a 5 at the back team. See a lot of good wing backs on the top 6 squads that I think can land me approx 15 clean sheets, 2 goals, 6 assists by year end.

Can't decide if I think I'm smart or an idiot.

    Foster
    Tripper - Valencia - Kolasinac - Alonso - Walker
    Alli - Willian - KDB
    Lukaku - Firmino
