The Numbers Game – Tottenham Hotspur

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, we move to focus on one of the key sources of Fantasy talent – Tottenham Hotspur.

We start by analysing their performance on a team level, assessing last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas improvement. Following that, we drill down into the player data, pinpointing the key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on two specific points of interest for Fantasy managers – assessing the Dele Alli versus Christian Eriksen conundrum, while weighing up the allure of Harry Kane as a “fire and forget” captaincy option.

It’s fair to say that Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed their mettle last season after a disastrous end to 2015/16 saw them pick up two points in the final four fixtures and tumble out of the title race.

Spurs improved their points haul from 70 to 86 and also scored far more goals than beforehand – a total of 86 was far superior to 69 in the previous campaign and more than any team in the top-flight.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    RMT please

    Foster (Elliot)
    Valencia Trippier Cedric (Mee, Dummet)
    KDB, Pogba, Redmond, Ritchie (Carroll)

Cedric will probably not play the first couple of games. Austin does not seem to be exactly nailed, but might very well be the best candidate for the the third forward slot if he plays regularly. I would try to upgrade Pogba to a Liverpool mid, but I know it’s difficult with Kane in the team.

Not sure I agree. Huge money but they've lost the player who was very much so seen as the future of the club. Messi and Suarez are getting on, Neymar still hasn't hit the peak of his career.

Maybe if they get in a couple (Dybala and Dembele especially the ones in my mind who could be great for them) they will be able to repair the damage to morale. Think about it, this is Barcelona, the supposed haven of football and their star child has left them. Not only left, bought out his own contract to get away. That stings (as can be seen by the multitudes of absolutely butthurt Barca fans on Twitter).

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          6 years, 10 months ago

I don't think he was considered their star child though & that was a big part of why he left... it was Messi-Suarez-Neymar in that order... he wanted to be the main man & could never be that while MS were there... as good as he is they are both better strikers (no shame in those two being better by the way, they are once in a generation players) Barca played a blinder getting 200m for him imho, not easy to replace him, but easier than replacing messi or Suarez. They both have years left in them before they need to worry about replacements

          1. Somalion
            • 14 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

But he was still their star child, their future leader. Messi is 30 and has his injury concerns. Suarez is 30 and eats people which isn't great from a criminal proceedings perspective. Neymar is only 25. Fast forward a few years, when Neymar hits his peak age of 27/28 and those two are 33, that's when him leaving will truly be felt unless they invest properly.

While they're both better currently, Neymar is still absolutely phenomenal, given his youth it is reasonable to say he could have become as influential as Messi for Barcelona once he became the main man in a few years time.

It isn't just those two either. Iniesta 33, Rakitic 29, Busquets 29, Pique 30, that team is ageing. The money will be useful, if invested properly, but there's no doubt in my mind the plan was for Barcelona to have Neymar as their future player to lead the youngsters as they become more prominent in the team.

I don't think Barcelona will struggle and they'll get players in most likely to help ease. This is more about damage to the club's mystique and aura. I have no doubt in my mind, if Barcelona had the choice of Neymar wanting to stay or that £200 million, it'd be Neymar every day of the week.

            1. Camp No No
              • 10 Years
              6 years, 10 months ago

In fact, they might have just paid that £200 million to him straight away if he would have stayed.

But I'm sure there could be some truth in that, for example when Messi refused to be subbed in one game when Luis Enrique had already singled that to him, Enrique just took Neymar out. This kind of things. It was clear he was not the star and the leader there yet. And it became clear last season that PSG is now a serious project, they are no longer far behind Barça, they realistically could have won Barcelona last season. In fact, it was Neymar who was decisive. So, sportively this makes great sense to Neymar.

Barcelona will suffer a lot for having let so many of their young players go instead of renewing the squad from inside. Neymar is the big one they will really struggle to replace, but they are finding themselves now with a past-its-best team of classy names and then younger but no longer improving players who don't quite cut it.

              1. Somalion
                • 14 Years
                6 years, 10 months ago

                Very possible.

Absolutely, no argument there on my behalf he wasn't the star in the team yet, more the future star. Messi is a funny one, the propaganda machine will roll into action here again but he pulls more of the strings at the club than people realise. I remember Ibra said in his book specifically that Messi decided he wanted to play in the centre, so they dropped Ibra to accommodate him.

Agreed as well, they haven't been producing the players of old/letting them develop. Having just bought Deulofeu back, it's clear they think him Barcelona capable, which really means he always had that in him and if they had been patient, could have kept him in the team all these seasons to develop him. Bojan is another example. There's no question of that guy's talents, but the pressures of being the "next Messi" at the age of 16 was too much. He said himself when he signed for Stoke and finally had no buyback clause in his Barcelona contract that it was like a whole new life, no longer had Barcelona looming over him. It's been fine so far, losing these talents, occasionally buying them back, people don't pay much attention (I think it really damages them, however) but as you rightly say, Neymar is the big loss. I think there's more going on there, a disconnect between the young and old in the club.

Fully agreed. I agree with what Mourinho said, too.

There's a good chance that Dembelé actually is the next really star player, like the Neymar level guy, but it's not guaranteed yet. Neymar is a guaranteed unique top of the world player. He is still to hit his peak age, and is already amongst the very best players on planet. If you can have this kind of player, the price is unimportant. It becomes important with the 2nd row, because there you have alternatives to chose from if you can't have the one you wanted.

Still, I think Dembelé, too, is so obvious talent and already has proven to be able to do it at the top level so well that even if he just continued doing that for 10 years, he would warrant a great price in current markets, and seen the potential upside, he is going to warrant the ridiculous price that Barcelona or Real Madrid pays for him. It's just incredible how big clubs, most notably PSG, missed out on him last summer. Of course he's more proven now, but his qualities already were so obvious back then.

Fully agree, as a frequent Dortmund watcher that kid is going very far. You touch on an interesting point, which I think teams like Barcelona and PSG also need to pick up on, they are missing the young talent. Dortmund bought him for an absolute song, 15 million euro or something like that. As in, cheaper than a Harry Maguire or a Jordan Ibe. Look at City nabbing Jesus, a very prototypical Brazilian wonder kid who a few years ago Barcelona would have signed to a precontract by the age of 16. I think the scouting has grown lazy during the golden era in Barcelona. Does it really look like the club have planned for the future at all? I'm not so sure.

Also pretty disgraceful from the Spanish league to try to block a transfer, when their own state and province supported clubs buy players from other leagues with money they don't have, and sign them for massive salaries they eventually can't pay (not thinking of the big three here). So darn hypocritical.

Come on, hopefully some other team for change. PSG doesn't have to collect them all. How about ManU buying Ronaldo back from Madrid, and Suarez moving to Bayern.

Darn Barcelona would be poor (compared to other big clubs) without Neymar, Suarez, and Messi.

They do face a bit of a challenge in that the old guard are... well, old. That team is ageing and having lost their most talented younger player, they need to start investing very wisely in replacements.

Don't think I'd like United paying the buyout on Ronaldo's contract given his age. Asensio, on the other hand 😉

I think Ronaldo still would make an excellent CF, would fit greatly in Mourinho's ManU if they can settle their disputes.

Asensio, yeah. Kroos to replace Cazorla at Arsenal? No chance though. Out of their league. (Sorry Arse fans, but that's just true).

I'm having the hardest time picking my third striker. I don't trust Hernandez to instantly gel with the squad with that schedule. I want to pick Gabbianni but I already have a slightly risky pick in Jesus. Gayle may be the best short term option.

    How's this shaping up?

    Foster
    Bailly, Trippier, Aké, Cedric
    KDB, Phillips, JWP
    Kane, Kaku, Lacazette
    (Myhill, Fraser, Carroll, 4.0)

Ah come on now, dreadful is extreme... KDB & Phillips are great picks. JWP is an educated gamble, backed up by Fraser 🙂

Is it a good idea to go a bit more conservative with team selection for the first gameweek, therefore leaving a bit of money behind to make it easy to jump on the high performers quickly?

Thinking things like Sane instead of KDB (£10m vs £8.5m)

Also worth looking at the TSB for 4th and 5th choices, as a higher TSB will surely be more open to a price drop?

So things like Hünemeier instead of Rangel (8.5% vs 21.1%)

    What are your thoughts?

Definitely agree with going for the lower ownership fodder players to avoid price drops

Imo choosing Sane is not being conservative because he may not play. I want to pick nailed on players to start the game.

Good point. Tough finding a City player that's nailed other than KDB and Jesus to be fair.

Don't agree with leaving so much money left over to get onto the big performers ... thats what the standard gw3-5 early wildcard is for.

I do agree with the lower % fodder though. That's why I've dumped Mason from Watford as my 4.0 defender (a small chance of playing, he's featured in pre-season and only 1.7% ownership)

Mason's a good shout, will take a look at that. Thanks.

Fair point about the WC. And I think I'll always struggle to save the money rather than upgrade a player for GW1 - just thinking out loud!
