The Numbers Game – Watford

Our series of summer members’ articles continues this afternoon as we assess what’s on offer at the managerial merry-go-round that is Watford.

To begin with, we analyse the Hornets’ performances on a team level, checking out last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas of improvement. Following that, we take a look at the players to pinpoint their key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on new manager Marco Silva’s impact on his former club Hull City after an impressive stint at the KCOM Stadidum during the second half of 2016/17.

Watford parted company with Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of 2015/16, scoring 40 times on their way to finishing in thirteenth spot on 45 points.

Yet the now-departed Walter Mazzarri failed to improve upon those performances in his only season at the helm. The Vicarage Road outfit scored the same number of goals but picked up just 40 points, ending the campaign in seventeenth position.

    Been set on this bunch for a couple of weeks and now, coming back to it, I think it looks weak.

      You need to downgrade one of Alli/Salah/Willian and put some more money in defense.
      That's one lesson I learnt last year - don't scrimp on your backline.

        I'm taking a punt on Gomes, he quite a lot of save points, he's very good at saving penalties and he's playing under Silva now, and he likes to play fairly defensively

      Good shout on Gomes.. As a watford fan. we have looked much more solid at the back. should a good punt for some CS and he is a great shot stopper!

      Had a go at doing a variation of this team. Are you sure it isnt 0.5 over? you may need to have 2x 4.5 defenders or downgrade a keeper?

    Noticed Suttner is popping up quite often. Has he been takin set pieces in preseason? Also is Francis first choice for Bourne mouth? Which of the 5.0 priced defenders at Bourne mouth need to be dropped for him to play? Or have they been experimenting with 5 at the back?

      with cook being a slight doubt i would say francis is a good candidate to start gw1 at least. Yes suttner has been on set pieces. Best thing is - they rotate well

      Suttner is on set pieces, yep.

      Francis has competition from Adam Smith at RB, and Cook/Ake at CB. He may well play, but he isn't nailed.

        Starting to think he is worth the risk at 4.5. How often do you get a nailed on 4.5M mid on set pieces? Best enabler imo.

    Why do people on here ignore Lacazette? He scores and will do no matter what. Plays for a big team and is likely to start every game. Probably on Pens too. Madness

      Agreed though he may be subbed off after 70' min for Giroud most likely. Compared to that strikers like Lukaku (not sure of pens) and Kane may play the entire game.

    Much being said about it being the year of her wingback, but how many teams can we actually expect to star with 5/3 at the back? I can only see 5 teams maximum that will start the season in that system

        Some of them are classed as midfielders though, personally don't think Danilo is nailed for city, think he might play sane there agaisnt weak teams

      Not a fan but Dummett is the most nailed on. He's competing no one for that left back spot. However, he isn't really an attacking left back but decent defensively.

      TC and RLC are the only viable ones. The other low-risk ones will get you a steady 2 points when they come off your bench. Never more.

    With Mario Lemina to Southampton imminent, is JWP's spot threatened? I can see the 5 man midfield like this; Lemina Romeu Tadic Redmond and Davis.
