Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Thursday

Eden Hazard’s recovery from injury moves up a gear with a scoring return for Belgium, while Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino gets the night off but his (current) club-mate Philippe Coutinho features and is among the goals in Brazil.

Here are the notes from the international break’s first night of action.

Hazard steps up recovery

Depending on which newspaper you read, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez’s decision to pick Eden Hazard against Gibraltar was either a blessing or a disaster for Chelsea.

The midfield star is nearing full fitness following an ankle injury and, having come through a run-out for Chelsea’s U23 side, an international start was the logical next step for some, a step too soon for others.

In the end, it was a positive step for the player himself, who captained the side and contributed a goal and an assist in a 77-minute appearance.

Romelu Lukaku scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, while Kevin De Bruyne provided an assist in a 9-0 romp that means Belgium can confirm their World Cup qualification with a win in Greece on Sunday evening.

How involved Hazard is in that rather more testing match remains to be seen, but Chelsea manager Antonio Conte spoke this week of the need to ease his player back into domestic duties. Meanwhile Hazard himself stated post-match that he felt ready to play his part against the Greeks

“I’m happy that I’m back on the pitch. I feel good. I think I’m ready for Greece, but the coach will decide”

Chelsea travel to Leicester City in Gameweek 4 before facing tough home matches with Arsenal and Man City prior to the second international break at the end of September.

That schedule – and the likelihood he will be eased back into Premier League action – will probably dampen short-term interest in Hazard (10.5), who is still owned by 1.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers despite his summer-long injury lay-off.

A rather more welcoming set of fixtures starts in Gameweek 8 with a trip to Crystal Palace, which would seem to be the more logical time to be considering Hazard for our Fantasy teams.

The Belgian side was packed with Premier League talent. Joining Hazard, Lukaku and De Bruyne were Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Man City centre-back Vincent Kompany and Spurs defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, with team-mate Mousa Dembele introduced at half-time.

Firmino gets a rest, Coutinho gets a game

Only two FPL forwards currently enjoy higher ownership than Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, with 28.7% buying into the budget charms of West Ham’s Javier Hernandez and a massive 58.2% backing Man United’s Lukaku.

The 27.5% who own Firmino will have been happy to see their man remain on the bench as Brazil eased to a 2-0 win over Ecuador in which team-mate Philippe Coutinho scored the second goal.

The midfielder has been sidelined at Anfield, supposedly with a back injury, but was fit enough to enter the fray in the second half and then get on the scoresheet from a Gabriel Jesus assist.

While Coutinho has played no part in Liverpool’s season as his potential move to Barcelona rumbles on all the way through to tonight’s closure of the Spanish transfer window, Firmino has been an ever-present.

And after five straight starts for the Reds, from which he’s produced three goals and as many assists, his FPL ownership base might have feared a touch of early-season burn-out should he have figured prominently against both Ecuador and on Tuesday away at Colombia.

But with Brazil’s World Cup qualification already assured, national coach Tite has the luxury of being able to tinker with his team and rest key members of his squad while he’s about it.

Liverpool return to domestic action with a Gameweek 4 trip to Man City. They will also travel to Leicester and Newcastle and entertain Burnley before October’s international break.

Firmino looks likely to be relatively fresh for that run, although rotation looks inevitable when you also factor in Liverpool’s two Champions League fixtures in September.

The Reds host Sevilla between Gameweeks 4 and 5, while Gameweeks 6 and 7 sandwich a trip to Spartak Moscow.

Chelsea winger Willian did feature against Ecuador, setting up the first goal and playing 84 minutes, while Man City pair Fernandinho and Ederson were unused subs.

Elsewhere…

Alexis Sanchez’s day was worsened by Chile’s humbling 3-0 home defeat to Paraguay. The still-Arsenal man played the full 90 minutes and will now aim to recover ahead of a clash in Bolivia on Tuesday, before a return for the Gunners’ Gameweek 4 meeting with Bournemouth.

Huddersfield’s Australian international Aaron Mooy – owned by 11.6% – missed the 2-0 defeat in Japan through illness, but will hope to feature in the Socceroos’ vital World Cup qualifier on Tuesday against Thailand.

Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac set up Bosnia and Herzegovina’s second goal in Cyprus but ended up on the losing side in a 3-2 thriller, while his club-mate Olivier Giroud provided an assist for France as Les Bleus strolled past Holland 4-0. Fellow Gunner Alexandre Lacazette was given a 10-minute run-out from the bench.

For Holland, Southampton’s Wesley Hoedt and Crystal Palace’s Timothy Fosu-Mensah earned 90 minutes, with the latter making an impressive international debut.

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva earned an assist in a 90-minute appearance as Portugal ran out 5-1 winners over the Faroe Islands.

Finally, Stoke City midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri was also among the assists as Switzerland laboured to a 3-0 win over the not-so mighty Andorra.

    WC or not?

    Foster (Elliot)
    Yoshida Jones Daniels (Dann Suttner)
    Salah Mkhi Alli Atsu (Carroll)
    Lukaku Jesus Firmino

I'd like a Swansea defender for their run, probably Naughton. Fabregas at 6.9m looks to be a starter, only missing Spurs because of his Red Card, think he could be a points differential and will undoubtedly get points when starting. Also fancy Morata, a Dann replacement and an Atsu upgrade. Am I being greedy?

Naughton for Dann? Yoshida at risk, with van Dijk staying. Atsu a good pick.

All I want to know is:

    Will Oxlade affect Wijnaldum's minutes?
Will B. Silva become pitch-time relevant?
Does D Sanchez break into the Tottenham defence?
Does Richarlison lose his place to Pereyra eventually?

    It's a lot, actually.

      1. Yeah, maybe a little. Starting wise I don't think so.
      2. Without injuries I don't see it happening. Sterling is out though so he is playing next game.
      3. Nah, he will be back up at first.
      4. I think he will find a place for both of them so no.

After seeing most of today's headlines I can't help but think the media really got carried away with the way Arsenal are doing business. They practically replaced Ox and deadwood players with Kolasinac and Lacazette, which are good singnings so far. The worst signing of the window was practically extending Wenger's deal, but we all knew that was gonna happen anyway. Still, Arsenal are better off than they were last season.

Of course that's the main problem, he's lost it. But you can't say it was bad business. The team not in the current stat because the players aren't good enough, they're just underperforming.

Two signings wasn't enough. Compare that to what City, United, Chelsea, Liverpool and even Spurs did. Arsenal may have a stronger squad than they did last season but they fell further behind their rivals.

Barely better off. Lost Perez Gabriel Ox, gained Lacazette and Kolasinac.
And they're best player looks pretty pissed off and will have signed a contract for a new club in a few months. Last season Arsenal finished 5th with sanchez scoring tons, will he be in the frame of mind to produce that sort of season?
They finished 5th, the team that finished 6th have strenghend heavily, the team that finished 4th too, and the team that finished 3nd even more so.
It's been a poor window for Arsenal.

        • 9 Years

Compare Arsenal's window to Tottenham's though, even Chelsea's. They had a strong team to start with, but their window has been poorer, add the Wembley factor and the Champions League. Too soon to tell, but it's not as gloom at the Emirates as some try to portay it.

    5. Arteta
      • 8 Years

Agreed. Some players simply had to move on and there's still a few who should go for the sake of their careers.

I'm obviously not impressed with lack of transfer activity since July but I hope that the earned and saved money will be used in next 2 transfer windows.

    6. Daaf
      • 8 Years

It's not the most original way to determine if a squad is big and good enough, but making the starting eleven and then see if there is decent back up should give you a clear sense of quality and quantity.

With 3-4-2-1 we don't have back up RWB (Debuchy doesn't count, maybe Maitlaind Niles plays there), for LWB Monreal would have to move, we have 6 cb's (Monreal included) but Wengers doesn't seem to trust Per and Chambers so that's at least at bit light.

We have 4 central midfielders (Coq, Elneny, Ramsey, Xhaka), and Wilshere and Santi. Which again is light, and centre midfield has been as disaster for years.

Centre forward is fine (Laca, Giroud), LW with Sanchez and Iwobi possibly ,but Theo is our only RW, Welbeck is not good enough for CF and isn't really a wide forward and that leaves Ozil who I don't think is a RW forward.

So if everybody is fit and firing, yeah maybe we will be fine. But we always have injuries, the manager doesn't trust some of his players, or trusts the wrong ones, we have dead wood and youngsters who are not (yet or never will be) good enough and have basically no playmakers.

So how you could say that we did fine this summer I do not know.

I forgot the goalkeepers and while we have enough of those, I don't understand why interest from Juve wasn't enough for us to wake the f up and keep Sczesny at the club.

Yeah, B is also solid. They're good teams. I can usually only fit one of Alli or Kane into a team I'm happy with, though, but Alli's CL ban is making me think he'll be their freshest attacker come Christmas. On which not, the extra in C could also upgrade Salah ro Alli. Hmmmm. Good teams.

I'm just concerned about your bench in A. C looks most balanced if you put 0.5 inot either Atso for, say, Brady or (perhaps more sensibly) Mbemba into a decent 4.5. Pretty sure when I WC I'm going to go 4 at the back too, but I if I do I want five starters. Good teams, though.

This is far too early on to be caring about opponents. Just make your team ok for now and consider opponents later on.

    Would you wildcard this team?

    Forster Elliot
    Yoshida Kola Hegazi Mee
    KDB Willian Salah
    Abraham Kaku Kane

    Elliot Daniels Mooy Carrol

Feel like I need rid of Yoshida Kola KDB and Willian and tempted to move Kane on for funds

Would do KDB Willian Kane -> Mkhi Hazard Jesus (-8) if I didn't wildcard

Phil Jones will probably outscore Atsu. You could consider four at the back.

      1. Dybala10

My concern is Jones is going to get rotated soonish and he is made of glass. My plan is rotate 4th DEF with Atsu as my old team has two 4.5 MID and that was dead.

With him off CL duty he may not get rotated that much, tbh. And easily swapped, of course. Good team, bro.

What's the concensus around here on a power-5 midfield with cheap 3rd striker option?

    I.E:

    Foster, (Lossl)
    Bertrand, Hegazi, Suttner, (Lowton), (Mariappa)
    Mane, Eriksen, Pogba, Silva, Mkitaryan
    Firminho, Jesus, (Calvert-Lewin)

      Seriously considering it.
A few more gw's of info and see.
That's the major reason for holding the w/c

        • 7 Years

On paper that midfield + striker line looks scary.

My only issue would be 2 attackers from City, United & Liverpool.

A lot to ask of few teams when others could do well.

Jesus to Morata and upgrade the defence slightly and then I think this team would score a lot of points.

      Goal.com is the source so....

I think he will be rightly p*ssed off, but you'd hope he realises he's getting paid a wedge and can go as he pleases next summer, putting in a shift for Arsenal in the meantime.
