Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Friday

Harry Kane celebrates the demise of August with a brace for England, while Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson delivers a not-so subtle reminder of his attacking credentials to club boss Jurgen Klopp with a fine strike for Scotland.

A number of other Premier League players impress, most notably Christian Eriksen with a goal and two assists for Denmark and new Burnley forward Chris Wood with a hat-trick for New Zealand.

Here are the notes from Friday’s global schedule.

Some home nation comforts for Harry

There was a sense of inevitability about Harry Kane’s goals for England in a 4-0 win in Malta.

The opponents, however well-organised and stubborn, were decidedly limited, the Spurs man’s early-season statistics positively screamed ‘he’s due a goal’ and, of course, it wasn’t August anymore.

Assuming he comes through Monday’s home match with Slovakia unscathed, we must now wonder whether his international form been enough to convince his 1.39 million owners to hold.

Interestingly, Kane’s Net Transfers edged into positive numbers following his goals, although that was a brief spike and he has since dipped into deficit once again – just.

Over 111,000 have shifted Kane out of their squads ahead of Gameweek 4 to this point. He has suffered total Net Transfer loss of over 313,000 since Gameweek 1, without dropping in price from 12.5.

Everton at Goodison Park will be a stern test for Spurs and Kane, although there is room for optimism.

Ronald Koeman’s defence have allowed 46 shots on goal and 14 on target – only five teams have conceded more. However, that ranking is perhaps skewed by that fact that the Toffees have faced trips to both Manchester City and Chelsea in Gameweeks 2 and 3.

They shipped nine shots to Stoke City at home in Gameweek 1, with the defence allowing just a single effort on target. Indeed, Everton were one of just five sides who did not concede a big chance over the opening weekend.

But Spurs and Kane were impressive in their only away trip so far, again in Gameweek 1.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side fired 18 shots at Newcastle United, with ten from inside the penalty area and three big chances created.

A blank on Merseyside would spark another steep decline in Kane’s ownership but, even in that scenario, there is a strong case to sit tight.

Kane will face a very favourable run of opponents (SWA, whu, hud, BOU) once that Goodison Park fixture is out of the way.

One match against a bus-parking Malta does not constitute a renaissance, but Kane’s Friday night return should at least kill off any theory that the striker is low on confidence.

A tale of two left-backs

Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson has started his career on Merseyside in some style.

The Scottish international has played just one league match in three for the Reds. However, he produced nine points from a clean sheet and maximum bonus earned on the back of a superb attacking display at home to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2.

Robertson created two big chances, fired in two attempts and put over 10 crosses in a sparkling Reds debut against the Eagles.

His progress was derailed by an absence for the Gameweek 3 meeting with Arsenal. He missed the 4-0 victory due to the birth of his child and with Alberto Moreno impressing against the Gunners, a Robertson recall at Manchester City in Gameweek 4 is far from guaranteed.

But he has strengthened his case with Friday’s performance. Robertston scored with a fine long-range effort as Scotland chalked up an impressive 3-0 win away in Lithuania last night.

His 4.9 price puts him in the mid-range for Liverpool defenders, but if Klopp were to field him more regularly, his 2.2% ownership will surely soar.

Another left-back, Southampton and England’s Ryan Bertrand (5.5), was also among the Friday night goals.

His price tag marks him out as the most expensive Saints defender, but you get much for the money – most importantly, security of starts.

New Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has bolstered his defensive options with the summer signing of Wesley Hoedt. And with Virgil van Dijk remaining at St Mary’s, owners of Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida face uncertain times.

There is a chance that Pellegrino could be the latest to consider a switch to a three at the back. Either way, Bertrand’s status as a Southampton starter – whether at full-back or wing-back – looks assured.

His team-mate on the opposite flank – Cedric (5.0) – is cheaper, though Bertrand’s role on set-pieces has so far helped him outperform the Portuguese in the Bonus Points System (63 vs 58).

Bertrand also has goals in his locker. He’s hit five over the last three seasons, while Cedric is yet to open his Saints account.

It still looks wise to cover the Saints defence. Pellegrino’s rearguard have earned two clean sheets so far, and only a Gameweek 6 visit from Man United provides a major test all the way through to Gameweek 12.

Elsewhere…

Danny Welbeck was England’s other scorer in Malta, with assists coming from Dele Alli, Jordan Henderson and second-half substitute Marcus Rashford.

Burnley’s new striker Chris Wood scored on his Clarets debut against Spurs, and he underlined his form with a hat-trick for New Zealand in a 6-1 thrashing of the Solomon Islands.

Crystal Palace are yet to score in the league, but their midfielder James McArthur was among the goals for Scotland, while Southampton’s Steven Davis notched a goal and an assist as Northern Ireland laboured to a 3-0 win in San Marino.

Spurs’ Christian Eriksen maintained an encouraging start to the season – 22 points from three assists and five bonus – with a goal and two assists as Denmark brushed aside Poland 4-0.

Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his positive start to the season with a strike for England U21’s away in Holland. Team-mate Ademola Lookman provided the assist.

Norway and Bournemouth striker Josh King opened his account for the season with a penalty in his country’s 2-0 win over Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, Nigerian internationals Victor Moses and Kelechi Iheanacho were both on the scoresheet in a 4-0 win over Cameroon. Chelsea wing-back Moses also provided an assist. Stoke City have concerns over Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who was forced off after just 14 minutes of his appearance from the bench for Cameroon in that match.

Elsewhere, Newcastle winger Christian Atsu followed up his assist in the 3-0 win over West Ham with another for Ghana in a 1-1 draw with Congo. His team-mate Mikel Merino also impressed, scoring a superb solo effort in Spain U21’s 3-0 win over Italy.

Hi Guys, need some advises here:

After GW3, 184pts (213k OR), initial plan was to WC after GW6/7 (2nd international break), should I stick to that

    Foster / Elliot
Bertrand / Jones / Kolasi (Mee, Lejeune)
Dele / Salah / Mkhi / Ramsey (Caroll)
    Luka / Jesus (Mounié)

I've got some concerns (Lejeune, Ramsey, not having Alonso, want to swith to Mané over Salah, Kane will wake up, etc...)

    Any idea?

OK so managed to narrow down the list further, based on available budget:

    A) Mooy (reject if he remains ill)
    D) Fabregas (ditch due to rotation risk)
    H) Tadic (ditch due to rotation risk)

Need to look into the remainder within budget as I have 2FT and 0.5 ITB:

    B) Fernando Luis Rosa
    C) Kante
    E) Dembeler
    F) Dier
    G) Elneny
    I) Davies

What do you guys and gals think in terms of likely being nailed and based on the upcoming fixtures...I am tempted by Davies but want to take a punt with Elneny as Arsenal become vicious underdogs in the next few games...

I can make 2 changes - current squad below and saving WC for GW8:

    Courtois (Foster)

    Dawson, Danilo, Mee (Adam Smith)

    Mata, Redmond, Alli, Capoue (Shaqiri)

    Firmino, Morata, Lukaku

Bear in mind I'm on limited budget so I have to pick from the mediocre of the worst...

Fine I'll just do Mooy for Shaqiri and Naughton for Pieter's seeing as Stoke have limited chance in the upcoming games

I'm 42 points behind the #1 of my private league so I'm hoping my underrated team pull in some decent points whilst the bandwagon crowd perform below par (wishful thinking)

Why don't you just play the wildcard? Go for one of the popular WC templates on the forum and then chip chop as per your wishful thinking. Imo that midfield needs a lot of repair. WC just about sounds right at this point in time. Good luck though, do what you think works the best for you 🙂

Honestly, the books I'd have read if this site didn't so regularly make me lol. To his defence, I did find myself thinking about Elneny the other day, simply because I reckon he's about to have a run in the team, but then I remembered he never passes the ball forwards, which can hinder fantasy points.

Hehe, it's better to stick with the popular 4.5m options if you're considering one. TC, RLC, Chalobah etc. the most popular ones. Atsu at 5m if you wanna stretch a bit more.

I do think Arsenal will have no mercy in the upcoming fixtures..was initially tempted by Xhaka but he seems a thug so will collect cards no end...

I'm playing this more like celebdaq, but guess maybe I'm not so good at trying to find hidden gems in the rough...

I may report back to this thread in 10 days time with the GW4 scores for Fernando Luiz Rosa and Elneny (as long as it doesn't balls up 🙂

A country with its economic priorities totally backwards. The national aspiration still seems to be making money on land prices for doing nothing & land-lording, while working for a living gets taxed heavily. There are many and growing social and demographic consequences as the post suggests.

If he's anything like as useful as he was during his last spell, Bony at 6.0 is worth keeping an eye on.

          I assume he'll generally start.

No Siggy now, of course, but the role of the likes of Sanches could help the team be productive.

Was also wondering if Sanches' arrival might mean Carroll plays further up the pitch now. From what I've seen of Sanches, he's a holding mid, can also play number 8. Tom Carroll might play the Siggy-esque role with Sanches being the catalyst behind.

The coach likes him, it's just a perception created by a few people here and everyone has gone around believing it. There are others who frontrunners in that central midfield if anyone's gonna be dropped at all.

            B wins that every time

                  Don't know? Neither do I?
Why? Because nobody cares because it's as important as who finished 14th.

This is a strange one for me because I just pledge my allegiance to football in general, but prefer club football to the random lottery of talent being born/picked up by a particular country. I loosely follow Aston Villa...in the same way their performances have loosely resembled football.

But for all the pain England fan's have had to endure...yes even those fair weather arseholes fans who know nothing about football but suddenly become an expert, I'd pick England.

You've got me thinking about this now. Let's assume Mahrez continues with his positive attitiude even though he's still there. At the end of the season (and with LEI having no CL rotation issues) who has more points: Mahrez, Pogba, Mikhi or Silva?

I like this team - have been playing around with very similar lineup myself. Don't downgrade Lowe, because his fixtures dovetail with Naughton so well, you can play that team with a nailed four-at-the-back. You're main dilemma is if you want the extra value in mid or up front. I'm leaning towards upfront because I think there a bit of value in a few mid-priced mids, but I'm also an Evertonian and think that DCL will get plenty of minutes in the next few months at least. Koeman clearly rates him and he's the closest we have to a proper number 9 right now. Think your team works if you're expecting DCL to be an scoring sub, so to speak. Good luck if you go for it.

That said, Firmino will be rotated a bit at some point, you'd assume, so you might have some GWs with only one up-front. Hmmmm.

Sporting's Head of Communications, Nuno Saraiva, said -

"Mr David Sullivan lies. No proposal arrived for the player William Carvalho. The football industry is not the plateau of an adult film in which all obscenities are allowed. For this reason, the boss of a Club requires much more than this intellectual pornography. Mr Sullivan has a duty to prove what he says. Sporting Clube de Portugal challenges him to publicly show the proposals he says have been made as well as the evidence that Sporting CP has received them."

          Bony Vs Abraham?

What I hear is that Bony i has been way off the pace at Stoke. If he fails to secure regular starts, Abraham become an excellent prospect at 5.5m. But if Bony recovers his old form, he looks like a steal at 6m.

Who do you think will win that battle? Or does Clement rotate them?

With Swansea fixtures I'm keen on Abraham as an enabler at the moment.

Certainly at Stoke, Bony was miles off from match fitness from what I've heard. He never got near the level that Hughes expected in terms of fitness and sharpness and, as a result, hardly figured.

Things might be different now but it will take a while for Bony to start matches. Even so, I still don't see Bony as a forward who can press high up the pitch. He's a target man, a pivot used to set up runners and to get on their end of their service.

Abraham can be that and also something different - he has the pace and workrate to press and run the channels.

For me, Clement puts his team out with a 3-5-2 in order to get both in the side.

If he sticks with two up front while Bony is working on his match fitness then, for me, that's a clear sign that both will figure.

Thanks Mark, sounds like Abraham is a reasonable punt for Swansea fixtures in the next 6 GWs.

I'm certainly going to go with him for now, but an on form Bony at Swansea is certainly an enticing prospect further into the season.

Clement likes to play with a target man that drops back and comes short, holds the ball up, lays it off etc., and with a second forward that does the running. Tammy and Bony are similar in that regard and look to be in direct competition and I can't see them naturally playing together because they will occupy the same position and space and are similar in many respects

Tammy could possibly be the runner in a two man attack with Bony but he doesn't have the 'buzz' nippieness or industry of Ayew, so I can't see that as a 'given'.

For the moment Tammy is first choice for the next 3 games and it is his shirt to lose, but Bony will get decent minutes of the bench.

Regarding Stoke form, Hughes used Bony as the single striker expecting him to run along the front line etc - I think Hughes was asking him to play in a way that didn't suit him, a bit like Benteke and Balotelli at Liverpool.

The Bony Tammy issue is very much avoid. wait & see how it all plays out. No point having a rotation risk if you have a playing 3rd striker in your FPL starting 11.

When it all settles down in 3 or 4 game weeks ... the WC will be everyone's friend 😉

Bony surely will be number one in time but he'll probably need to build up fitness first. Then it remains to be seen if he replaces Ayew or Abraham. Probably a don't buy or sell any of them at the moment.

You'd have to assume that he's nowhere near fit or sharp enough to start for a while. Feels like a desperate replacement-buy and I'd be amazed if Tammy is rotated for him any time soon. A more important question would be - is Tammy going to score? if he does, Swansea will be fine. If he doesn't, they may not be.

As a swans fan I'm certain they will play together whether it's in a 3-5-2 or 4-1-2-1-2 formation. I'm confident both will score double figures and offer great value. However, Ayew might keep his place after scoring in our last 2 games so I think GW6 is the perfect time to bring 1 of them in.

It seems pretty obvious that Clement is heading towards a 3-5-2. The number of good CMs he now has suggests that as much as anything else. And the loan out of Montero. Certainly looks that way to me anyhow.

I get the logic but don't think he's got the '3' to play it succesfully.
A variation of a diamond or the 4-2-3-1 /4-3-2-1 would be my take on it.

Bartley-Fernandez-Mawson? Mawson is left footed and can easily play on the left of a 3. And then VdHoorn and Rangel as cover.

I think Swansea have enough to play a back 3 if Clement wants to and he has done that in their last 2 PL games.

Yeah, I see that and you may well be right but doesn't look the strongest back 3.
Not enough history of what he's played in the past to make much more of a call on it but time will tell.
He's one of the few English coaches who seems to have a bit of knowledge and good 'european' background. I'd like to see him do well.

Looks like he started with 5 at the back against Palace so that may be the way he's heading.
I thought he might go back 4 then.
                  Fer Clucas (Mesa) Carroll
                  Sanches Ayew
                  Abraham (Bony)

I guess it depends on how much gametime he'll plan for Sanches.
                  Just a thought.

Van der Hoorn should be above Bartley right now.

Clement used 41212 in the league cup and the whole pre-season. I don't see why he will suddenly move to 3 atb on a permanent basis. Swansea have 7 central midfielders right now. The squad is completely imbalanced for a 352.

Predicting the man in the hole is difficult. Clucas is the best fit probably. He has the work rate of Siggy and used to play on the left wing. Fer would also be able to play there if Sanches moves into his place.

It would seem pretty obvious after the transfer window that Clement will ditch 352 (with 2 full backs in the 5) to accommodate an extra midfielder in a 4132 - midfireld in now a strength in depth position whereas with Bartley injured Swans only has 3 fit centre backs.

352 is a formation for counter attacking away fixtures or sgainst the likes of Man U.

I love the slow down in Kane's sales today. He's averaging just -28 an hour. A couple more goals against Slovakia and hopefully last night's brief uptick into positive NTI will become a lasting turnaround.
