International Scout Notes – Saturday

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata maintains his impressive form with a goal for Spain as he continues to promote his Fantasy CV.

Here are the notes from Saturday’s international fixtures.

Morata the merrier

Alvaro Morata needed just 18 minutes to confirm his continued fine early-season form as Spain completed a convincing 3-0 win over fellow European football royalty Italy.

The Chelsea striker had to make do with a place on the bench as coach Julen Lopetegui opted to play with no recognised forwards at all, preferring instead to use Man City midfielder David Silva as a ‘false nine’.

But when Morata finally made it onto the pitch, he made an immediate impact, scoring Spain’s third goal a mere five minutes after replacing Andres Iniesta.

The strike means that he now has three goals and two assists from four matches this season, explaining why only Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is ahead of him in the Fantasy Premier League forwards standings.

It was widely anticipated that Morata would take time to adjust to his new surrounds at Chelsea; a theory that clearly played a part in deciding a modest 12.5% ownership.

Chelsea’s tough opening schedule also dampened early enthusiasm – the Blues have already played Spurs and Everton and still have to face Arsenal and Man City, albeit both at home, before Gameweek 7 is done.

But after their shock opening day defeat to Burnley, Antonio Conte’s side are starting to look every inch the defending champions, and Morata has clearly settled into his new role as their spearhead.

His goal and assist returns in both home matches to this point have sparked massive interest. More than 196,000 FPL managers have drafted in the Spaniard and, with 40,000+ making the direct trade, Morata has proved the most popular Harry Kane replacement ahead of Gameweek 4.

Of the strikers with two or more goals this season, only Romelu Lukaku can better his attempts (9), his minutes per chance average (20.9) and penalty box touches (15), while he and Firmino are the only strikers with two assists.

With Eden Hazard closing in on full fitness, Chelsea’s attacking threat – and supply line for Morata – is surely only going to improve, even if the Belgian is likely to regain penalty duties.

And based on current form, the forthcoming visit from Arsenal is not the test of old, which makes the Blues’ short-term schedule more palatable – (lei ARS sto MCI cry WAT bou), Man City notwithstanding.

Should he be given the chance to make hay in Spain’s Tuesday night trip to Liechtenstein, Morata will return to domestic duty for Gameweek 4 with form on his side, Hazard potentially supplying chances and with the fixtures more favourable than anticipated.

Elsewhere…

On a quiet night for Premier League players, Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn’s superb winner for Wales against Austria demonstrated the wealth of attacking options available to Jurgen Klopp.

Elsewhere in that encounter, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey shook off doubts surrounding his fitness to play 90 minutes.

Returning to Liverpool, Sadio Mane played the full 90 minutes as Senegal were held to a goalless home draw with Burkina Faso. They will now play the reverse fixture – a vital clash for the Senegalese – on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Man United centre-half Eric Bailly supplied an assist in Ivory Coast’s 3-0 win in Gabon. Spurs’ Serge Aurier completed 90 minutes for the visitors.

Brighton defender Shane Duffy gave the Republic of Ireland the lead in Georgia, only for Martin O’Neill’s men to have to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle United’s suspended striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored for the third match running in all competitions as Serbia beat Moldova 3-0, with Man United’s Nemanja Matic playing 77 minutes for the hosts.

Finally, Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson managed a second consecutive full 90 minutes of the season, but couldn’t stop Iceland slumping to a 1-0 defeat in Finland.

I'm looking at Arsenal players for the next gameweek. If Sanchez is ready, he could turn out to be a great differential.

Kompany (LIV), Agüero (LIV), Willian (lei) are the players I'm looking to throw out with 2 free transfers.

Kolasinac and Lacazette are also in consideration besides Sanchez.

        Ramsey perhaps?

I'm waiting to see if Arsenal can respond to the 4-0 mauling first

I think the international break has come in the perfect time for them to clear their minds. FPL is about looking ahead, not chasing results and I'm confident they can bounce back right away. Easiest fixture on paper as well.

Bit too much of a gamble for me, could be benched due to "international fatigue", talks of Sanchez very unhappy at the clubs decision.

The decision has been made before the deadline day for him to not be upset. I think this could as well be a bunch of media rubbish, he always gives 100% as long as he's fit.

        Because Firmino and Morata.

        And that benching last week.

        And because Sanchez.

        And because Wenger/Arsenal in general...toxic!

But this so called Arsenal crisis is pretty exaggerated. They won the FA Cup and Community Shiled not so long ago, had 1 defeat in the last 12 games before Stoke, Lacazette even scored there, but was denied by an assistant ref for being less than an inch offside. They now have time to clear their heads, because of the international break and return to the PL with the easiest fixture on paper. This toxic atmosphere everyone's talking about is mostly external talk, this team is not as bad as 2 games made them look.

There's zero value at 10.5m for Lacazette.

Firmino and Morata are the standout "premium" forwards in terms of form/price.

For higher prices, you need nailed captain options who're gonna get minimum 20 goals a season.

Lacazette is certainly not captain-able, and I doubt he'll get his 20 goals without something drastic happening in the rest of the Arsenal team.

Lacazette has been scoring 20+ goals for 4 consectuive seasons. Not saying he'll definitely repeat it, especially in a tougher league, but I think Arsenal create enough chances for him to be able to do that here in a better team. We're only 3 games into it, but at the end of the season Arsenal will be up there in the top 4, they're pretty consistent in terms of just below the top performances. Morata has never scored more than 15, he looks class but we'll see where he'll be at the end of the season.

I just don't see the rest of the Arsenal team giving him the service.

It's pretty much all on Ozil these days. You're not gonna get massive creativity out of Xhaka, Elneny/Coquelin, Ramsey.

Sanchez will try to score rather than provide.

                Arsenal need Santi Cazorla back!

I see your point but I disagree, I think Arsenal have always had the problem for having a team full of assisters rather than goalscorers, he's the first natural goalscorer they've had in years. We could argue Sanchez is like that, but he's still more of a winger, who gets things going and creates chances rather than a goalscoring forward.

I don't know about that. The Liverpool game they looked like a team trying to get battered. Reminiscent of what Chelsea did to Mourinho and last year it was Leicester not playing for Claudio Ranieri. Arsenal are doomed until they find a new manager is my guess.

Yes, but that was 90 minutes compared to 3420 played in a PL season. One bad performance and another bad result at Stoke in 2 difficult away fixtures where any team in the world can lose is not an adequate sample to say Arsenal are in a crisis big enough to see them end up at 10th place by the end of the season.

Most people tend to look back, not forward in making FPL decision, especially early wildcarders. He's not the most popular pick because he was benched (one off) and other forwards seem to be great options atm (despite all of the most expensive ones not performing in the last gameweek). 🙂

With so few price rises so far this season is it now less important to chase bandwagons or should we become much more scrupulous about avoiding drops and preserving the TV we have? Is not losing TV the new building TV?

I don't understand how the market works this year.

I've had a price drop on Matt Ritchie...presumably from very few sales.

Kane's shed hundreds of thousands...no price drop yet.

Kane has a huge ownership compared to Ritchie so will require a lot more transfers out to drop. More importantly wildcard transfers don't count towards price rises and drops. I think because selling Kane would leave a considerable sum ITB then the vast majority of his sales are from people wildcarding thus no price drop.

I've played the game for many years by building TV for the first half of the season, then reaping the rewards in the 2nd.

I've always reached 110m minimum TV each season.

Don't see it happening this year...the price rises aren't happening anything like as quick as in previous years.

    Foster (Elliot)
    Alonso, Cedric, Jones (Lascelles, Mbemba)

1,2 ITB to get in Hazard for Alli or Mane when he starts his madness.

Why not just get in Hazard now if you want him? I don't like leaving money in the bank without a very good reason. 1.2M ITB for 3 weeks is the equivalent of wasting a season's worth of 0.1M. Plus you are already committed to using a transfer to get Hazard.

Better value around at lower prices (Bertie 15th in total points for defenders 5.6 and below) no assists or goals from Soton defenders and Soton attackers don't looking like scoring many goals at all.

Very good fixtures as well. Might be caused by the uncertainty of starters at CB with VVD, Hoedt, Yoshida and Stephens all in contention now. However, the masses seem to look at points scored so it's a little odd.

Danilo to Kolasinac is the move Im leaning towards.

Will hold him but don't really see the point of transferring him in with Wenger in charge. Chelsea away week after so just wait and assess until GW6. Who knows what he will do, stick Monreal on the wing over him or switch to 4231...

Looks like that'll be a tight game, http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/16375669 only +53, but the way he's been playing and with maybe the addition of Lanzini (from the start or off the bench) and the help of Antonio, I would fancy him to score.

How's this WC looking? Pretty happy with the balance. Could play either 442, 433 or even 532 sometimes.

    Foster, Elliot
    Alonso, Jones, Kolasinac, Cedric, Naughton
Eriksen, Pogba, De Bruyne, Richarlison, TCarrol
    Morata, Firmino, Gabbiadini

No decent captain options. Need Kane or Lukaku. Get rid of KDB and Gabbi.

It's ok, but I'm not sure on Kola. I'd definitely ditch KDB and consider Mane instead. Chich over Gabbi too.

If you're opposing Kane & Kaku (like I am) I think it's critical to have 3 decent alt-caps, Mane is therefor important and so is Lacazette imho. Heavy defence looks great but captaincy issues weigh heavily on us risk-takers.

    Who to captain GW4?

Mané (mci), Morata (lei), or Chicharito (HUD)?

Would C Chicharito but considering WHM's form... only playing on Monday though, which is nice to keep my hope of a good GW until last minute.

    2 FTs, 0 ITB

    DeGea, Elliot
    Bavies, Zanka, Stephens, Daniels, Long
De Bruyne, Willian, Mhiki, Fraser, Carrol
    Jesus, Firmino, Kane

Keen to get rid of De Bruyne and Fraser.

Few players I'm thinking about, Salah, Mane, Eriksen, Morata

Maybe put the different players in capitals? No Kane seems ballsy, but he's become very unpopular - yet if I was on my WC, he'd be in mine 100%. On first glance I'd go with B though. Rosenior is a waste of a pick, he won't play.

I found this article when googling bps baseline as I didn't know what it was: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/05/29/baseline-bps-a-new-way-of-understanding-fpl-bonus-points/

And 3 years ago the consensus seemed to be how much it favoured centre backs over wing backs and wing backs should be priced accordingly.

Just find it interesting as wing backs are now the 'in' thing due to this shift in formations that Chelsea seemed to have caused half the league to try. And wing backs are as expensive or more than their centre half alternatives.

Also makes me think, with midfielders having such a higher baseline bps than strikers, therefore likely to grab the bonus points unless the strikers steal the show in a game, why is it that there hasn't been a greater shift to 1 or 2 man front lines to maximise heavy hitting midfields and chances of grabbing bonus?. Seems 3-4-3 is preferred formation and maybe always will be. Or maybe it's lack of value in cheap forwards for our benches compared to midfielders.

    1. VS10_
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

Wingbacks are great if they actually have some end product. A lot of them are just bad wingers so when they get to a good position they do a "Kyle Walker" which doesn't get you any points.

The beauty of FPL draft is we can only play XI a week so there's room for that kind of early move to strengthen the squad, yes.
