The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 4

Are Harry Kane and Romelu Lukau about to make this season very dull?

Many of us marvelled at the array of attacking options we faced prior to Gameweek 1 and, even today, the choices showed up; goals for Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Jesus and Alvaro Morata demonstrated that.

But there is already a feeling of inevitability about the fact that Lukaku and Kane have dominated as the top two captain picks for four successive Gameweeks.

The Spurs’ striker’s “mini drought” ended today at Goodison Park – perhaps the least likely venue for a haul when we studied his opening four Gameweeks. But the Toffees were poor and simply folded to an impressive Spurs display.

Now, with the next four fixtures looking so favourable Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Kane’s bandwagon will surely gather pace, stalled only by the fact that 30% of Fantasy Premier League managers may be otherwise distracted by replacing the suspended Sadio Mane in midfield.

It now seems only a matter of time before Kane’s 26% ownership rises and starts to reach levels similar to that of Lukaku.

The Manchester United striker was hardly spectacular at Stoke but, again, he found the net and could have scored more. Owned by 58%, if he remains free of injury, it’s feasible that he could even span the entire season as the go-to captain option for the majority of managers; 37% backed him today, with Kane back on 11%.

With the Wildcard active, I pondered losing one of this pair – temporarily gambling on Lacazette outscoring Kane today and paying the price.

I’m not sure I want to taste that medicine again. Fortunately, the funds have been reserved to bring in the Spurs man ahead of Gameweek five, and he’ll be locked in from now on.

Indeed, I’m now wondering if that means that the scope of my attacking changes this season will be limited to my third striker and an occasional shuffle of three big-hitters in midfield.

My faith in Kane is pretty much unshakable once the goals start rolling. Meanwhile, Lukaku looks likely to keep scoring merely by turning up to lead a United attack powered by Paul Pogba’s physicality and fed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s guile.

We can flirt with alternative options, even experiment with the captaincy from time to time, but giving up on the security on offer from Lukaku and Kane won’t be easy.

The aforementioned Jesus, Lacazette and Morata all have their merits. The latter is now the top scoring striker but, presumably surrendering spot-kick duties to Eden Hazard, I’m not convinced he or even Jesus can live with the “big two”.

I’m preparing to watch Kane and Lukaku dominate, push 30 goals and battle for the Golden Boot. That would tie up 24 million of my budget over the season and restrict my ability to react to the big-hitter bandwagons in midfield.

My season might be limited to switching Spurs, Liverpool and United midfielders to form, and shuffling some defenders according to fixtures.

That doesn’t sound all that appealing, but I’m not sure when I’ll next have the balls to change it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

How to process the Mané exit ? Team is :

    Foster | Elliot

    Jones | Cédric | Naughton | Mbemba | Long

    Mané | Alli | Pogba | Fer | Carroll

    Kane | Lukaku | Chicharito

    £0.9 itb.

    A. Mané + Long Coutinho + Bavies (-4)
    B. Mané + Long Eriksen + Clark (-4) [£0.2 itb]
    C. Mané Coutinho/Eriksen and play Naughton next week at Spurs.
    D. Other ideas that don't involve KDB, Salah, Pedro& Fabregas ?

I would advise A if you can afford to wait to see if Coutinho features on Wednesday.

I'm afraid I will be forced to make a decision tomorrow, Davies will probably rise tomorrow night and if so I'll fall £0.1 short of plan A.

Inevitably a lot of us will probably opt to go Mkhi > Pogba. When does the CL start?

Yeah, sorry I didn't word it that well. What I meant was Mkhi owners (like myself) will probably opt to ship him out for Pogba.

To be fair, if Lukaku bagged his goal on the first attempt today they'd be equal on points and Mkhi would have a better PP90.

        "Comfortably" is probably a stretch.

Thinking of punting on 4 in the back

    DDG/Elliot
    Alonso - Mendy - Kolasinac - Davies/4.0
    Eriksen - Salah - Pogba/4.5/4.5
    Firmino - Lukaku - Abraham

It will be like I'm literally playing with 7 Mids, 4 of them having cleansheet potential. Should I do it as experiment? first 3 decide. pls respond.

Is Kolasinac a must have ?

Remember he got 3 goals and 9 assists in 36 matches in all competitions last season.

He started this season in similar attacking mould with 1 goal and 2 assists in 4 matches

I've heard a few high profile FPL managers whinge about the pressure of having so many people analyse their team and their transfers.

Is it really that bad? Is it like the pressure of someone being forced to go to a foodbank, for example?

I personally think I would love it if people took an interest in my team. I would happily discuss my thinking all day long.

    P.S. I haven't started drinking yet 😯

Well you had a good first season, hopefully you'll make it in a few years 😉

I do worry about that though - writing these articles is putting pressure on the Top Five - I started them to learn from the best, but I hope it's not making them feel scrutinised and feeling they have to do well every week. At the moment it's a fairly reassuring season for us mortals! It will change.

Your articles are an institution on here. I'm sure the HOFfers are flattered to feature in them. I know I would be. It looks like it takes a heck of a lot of effort to write them every week and it would be a real bummer if they faded away like the what the fans say series.

It is an effort to write them. I tend to do them in two chunks; get all the stats and fill out the tables, which doesn't actually take that long because I've got spreadsheets set-up for it; then do all the writing. I worry about them being too formulaic and I'm not a natural writer or journalist like Jonty for example. I also wonder if I need to add that much comment - you can see what the tables say...

I keep hoping to unearth some real insights but I feel the real insights come from people like Peter and Graeme explaining their thinking. And obviously we are very lucky with Mark offering so much here and on the FPL Show. The Wildcard reaction is interesting - these are obviously managers not used to failure or even a particularly slow start, so they didn't wait around to try and fix that. I'm curious to see what happens next after not exactly the best Wildcard - will we start seeing hits or will they, like Jay, show more patience?

Probably because most people that analyse their teams are so short sighted.

So much chat on here about Mark having wasted his WC after one GW is oh so premature it's ridiculous.

There are 38 GWs so I'm not suprised if they get annoyed with people making comments about their decisions based on 1 game.

I think we'd all secretly love people to take more of an interest in our team. It's not a burden.

No thank you, that's why I never do these silly RMT things people do.

People only seem to base their opinions on the previous gameweeks and will never fully understand the decisions you spend all week making.

They have the same problem Paul McCartney had when he was with the Beatles he was only ever used to been told he was right by hangers on 😀

Like any one they love to be lauded for thier good decisions.
But when it goes badly and you have to waffle week after week about it. You would be tempted to do a Granville and go incognito too.

I like to keep an eye on some of the managers that i respect. It lets me know how im tracking vs some of the best in the business and keeps me grounded at the same time.

P.s. one of the teams i track is FPL Virgin

Forster or Schmeichel for WC team? The former would let me get Simpson while the latter would let me get Cedric/Bertrand.

    WC Team:

    Foster
    BDavies Jones Bertrand D. Luiz

Subs: Elliot, T Caroll, Cork, Mbemba

Next week doing Luiz to Kolasinac

Already done Yoshida to Davies with one FT, want to do Benteke to Vardy with my other but 0.5m short. Nearly got Vardy in ahead of this GW, just got a feeling he/Leicester are gonna go on a run. May take a hit as it'll probably be worth it:

Begovic to Elliot (the latter could rise tonight, although I'd otherwise play Begovic next week)

Downgrade Daniels (would otherwise keep him for Brighton (H))

Downgrade Kolasinac (good fixtures after Chelsea (A))

Downgrade Salah or Pogba, although I'm happy with both?

Begovoc to Elliot. I will probably get vardy too 🙂

    Any ideas for this team?

    Foster (Elliot)
    Cedric, Dawson, Kolasinac (Mariappa, Long)
    Willian, Mkhi, Ramsey, Salah (Carroll)
    Kane, Lukaku, Chicharito

    2 FT, 0.6 ITB

I'd get at least one more £4.5m defender who will start (good options for Huddersfield, Swansea, Newcastle and Brighton).

Maybe look at getting a cheaper 4th mid than Willian.

      Lukaku if you have Pogba.

That depends how covered you are in midfield. But supposing you have Mkhi or Pogba I'd get rid of Lukaku. Kun's fixtures look delish.

Probably Salah, Liverpool will need that injection of pace. KDB trolled me for 3 weeks but even if he delivers he's expensive.
