The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 4

Are Harry Kane and Romelu Lukau about to make this season very dull?

Many of us marvelled at the array of attacking options we faced prior to Gameweek 1 and, even today, the choices showed up; goals for Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Jesus and Alvaro Morata demonstrated that.

But there is already a feeling of inevitability about the fact that Lukaku and Kane have dominated as the top two captain picks for four successive Gameweeks.

The Spurs’ striker’s “mini drought” ended today at Goodison Park – perhaps the least likely venue for a haul when we studied his opening four Gameweeks. But the Toffees were poor and simply folded to an impressive Spurs display.

Now, with the next four fixtures looking so favourable Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Kane’s bandwagon will surely gather pace, stalled only by the fact that 30% of Fantasy Premier League managers may be otherwise distracted by replacing the suspended Sadio Mane in midfield.

It now seems only a matter of time before Kane’s 26% ownership rises and starts to reach levels similar to that of Lukaku.

The Manchester United striker was hardly spectacular at Stoke but, again, he found the net and could have scored more. Owned by 58%, if he remains free of injury, it’s feasible that he could even span the entire season as the go-to captain option for the majority of managers; 37% backed him today, with Kane back on 11%.

With the Wildcard active, I pondered losing one of this pair – temporarily gambling on Lacazette outscoring Kane today and paying the price.

I’m not sure I want to taste that medicine again. Fortunately, the funds have been reserved to bring in the Spurs man ahead of Gameweek five, and he’ll be locked in from now on.

Indeed, I’m now wondering if that means that the scope of my attacking changes this season will be limited to my third striker and an occasional shuffle of three big-hitters in midfield.

My faith in Kane is pretty much unshakable once the goals start rolling. Meanwhile, Lukaku looks likely to keep scoring merely by turning up to lead a United attack powered by Paul Pogba’s physicality and fed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s guile.

We can flirt with alternative options, even experiment with the captaincy from time to time, but giving up on the security on offer from Lukaku and Kane won’t be easy.

The aforementioned Jesus, Lacazette and Morata all have their merits. The latter is now the top scoring striker but, presumably surrendering spot-kick duties to Eden Hazard, I’m not convinced he or even Jesus can live with the “big two”.

I’m preparing to watch Kane and Lukaku dominate, push 30 goals and battle for the Golden Boot. That would tie up 24 million of my budget over the season and restrict my ability to react to the big-hitter bandwagons in midfield.

My season might be limited to switching Spurs, Liverpool and United midfielders to form, and shuffling some defenders according to fixtures.

That doesn’t sound all that appealing, but I’m not sure when I’ll next have the balls to change it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Should I stick with Vardy another week after he scored or take a hit to downgrade Siggy to 4.5 to get Kane or Morata?
    Thoughts?

Kane at home vs Swansea would definitely be my choice.
But is it worth taking Vardy out and a hit with Siggy out ?

  16. Lukaku v Morata
    Sunny 😎
    • 11 Years

In reference to the article, I'd like to ask why Lukaku is considered in the same bracket as Kane.

I'll be equally happy having Morata instead of Lukaku on my team. Lukaku has had arguably the easier fixtures and more number of minutes under his belt and still has a lesser score than Morata.

If we look at stats, Morata's stats have been consistently improving. Chances created by Morata so far have been 6 with Hazard and Pedro not in the team till now, whereas Lukaku has created 7 chances.

In terms of total shots, Morata has had 14 with 10 coming inside the box. While Lukaku has had 20 shots with 15 inside the box. The difference is understandable with Lukaku having more minutes and easier set of fixtures and Chelsea not having their best creative players available.

For me, Lukaku isn't as essential as Kane is right now. Thoughts?

Yeah, the only thing that worries me about not having Kaku is he can be a bit Kane-like once he's in the mood, dangerous guy

We always used to talk about why Chelsea assets were less likely to be explosive because Jose was in charge who prefers to defend his lead against better teams. Same argument now too?

Yes Lukaku is good and can be dangerous but will he be more dangerous than Morata or say Jesus to justify the extra funds which are useful elsewhere?

        1. Netley Lucas
          • 8 Years

Well there's already evidence he now wants to go on and smash teams and that's exactly what Kaku needs, we'll see

Jose's United hasn't had a real test so far apart from Stoke where he was chasing the game. When the good teams come, he'll go back to his old ways of safety first. But yes, we'll see how it goes

4 goals in 4 games for Lukaku suggests we don't need to worrying too much that his goals are going to be stifled by Mourinho supposedly shutting up shop late in games.

Lukaku - WHU, swa, LEI, stk

Morata - BUR(31min with 10/9 men), tot, EVE, lei

Looking at those fixtures, Lukaku has to have shots from better positions. Whereas, with Morata with his biggest creative partners not around has done fine imo and should definitely improve further from here on

Lukaku is proven in the league and was explosive last season while playing for a worse team.

So far so good for Morata, but Lukaku still the safer bet. Can't go wrong with Morata either though, for the next 2 weeks at least if you're going to be captaining Kane.

My point exactly. Can't go wrong with Morata either and the saved funds are a big help in balancing the team which means more points.

Also Morata's stats have been consistently improving and now with Hazard and Pedro back, I see him improving further

Keeping Morata for the next two-three games then I will reassess.

Considering switching him to Jesus at that point - some great City fixtures on the corner

Lukaku is considered in the same bracket as Kane because last year Kane only outscored him by 4 goals following those freak 2 games at the end of the season. Lukaku also didn't have penalties and he was playing for a worse team. I don't see any reason why he can't match Kane this season (and he's already 2 goals up after 4 games).

Not looking at last season, Kane has been an absolute beast this season according to stats. Lukaku more in league with Morata so far imo.

Lukaku is getting ditched for Kane for me ahead of GW5, as Kane has a good run of fixtures coming up. When Lukaku's improve I'll do swap back and vice-versa.

Doing so only gives me an easy captain choice with only one hard game going into the new year.

Also allows me to partner Kane/Lukaku with Morata and Firmino

Wouldn't over think it, there probably isn't much between them like you say but that ownership tips it in Lukaku's favour, it's not worth the stress of hoping he blanks every week as the majority of the games captain.

Kane will be the captain of choice in the next four but Lukaku will still be heavily captained like Ibra was last year, probably better to just accept that you need Kane and Lukaku and then worry about how you spread the rest.

Good HT and I have been considering this to free up funds as I currently have the Kaku, Kane, Firm front line and don't fancy Marks 4.5 mids x2. However Chelsea have ARS, stk, MCI and we have seen how good stk and mci can be and you would assume Ars won't want another thumping. Kaku fixtures look much tastier EVE, sot, CRY who have looked very shaky defensively recently. So I think it's best to reassess in a few weeks and certainly no point swapping if you already have Kaku

I see your point but do you think the return of Pedro and Hazard now to the team will help Morata or affect his points?
Their return is the reason why I would wait maybe 2 more gws and see how the team will look like and then decide whether to bring him in for Lukaku or not

Surprised no one has mentioned penalties yet. Hazard is back, so that's another string to Lukaku's bow.

      Lukaku's EO remains an issue.

Yes Morata is a good 'differential', but for now when we want to steadily climb to a good rank, I think it may be better to just stick with Lukaku to avoid the potential of having detrimental weeks where he goes mental.

There will be times when his EO surpasses 100% and even owners (but non captainers) will suffer from a haul.

So much speculation about B.Davies and whether or not he will retain his place when Rose returns:

Given how long Rose has been out injured for, he will probably get a couple run outs with the u23s first, so we'll at least have a fair warning regarding his return to fitness
B.Davies has been playing very well in Rose's absence. The form of B.Davies combined with Rose's outburst, Poch might not even feel very inclined to reinstate Rose in the starting XI anyways

      • 8 Years

This is exactly my thinking. Even if Rose is back in full training next week he probably takes 2 weeks after that to get back into the first team squad. So that gives Bavies 3-4 gw's which is when their fixtures turn bad anyway.

I have him and will almost certainly ship for Kane. Goals are shared in that City team. He could easily blank in another high scoring game. Aguero did him a favor by passing it to him for that second goal. Will just never consider captaining him and he's 10.4.

He's a good option. But all the premium strikers are delivering, not just him. So for me, it comes down to having the best captaincy option because you just can't have them all. And anyone over 10m NEEDS to be captaincy material. And Kane is just better for that than Jesus.

He'll continue getting returns in the next few games sure, but I think I can get much more with Kane (c).

I'd look at just Hunemeier > Naughton and roll the second transfer. Looks like you'll avoid a drop, possibly catch a rise, gives you fifteen starters, and means you don't need to play Cedric against United in GW6
