Dugout Discussion – Swansea vs Newcastle

After Burnley’s Chris Wood condemned Crystal Palace to a fourth successive loss, we turn to the Liberty Stadium in Sunday’s second, and final, fixture at 4pm.

Having grabbed their first win of the season in the previous round of fixtures, Swansea now have the chance to play their way into our plans ahead of an outstanding upcoming home schedule.

From Gameweek 6 onwards, Paul Clement’s side entertain Watford, Huddersfield, Leicester, Brighton, Bournemouth and West Brom in their subsequent six matches at the Liberty.

With that in mind, Tammy Abraham- at just 5.5 – has the chance to emerge as a valid option for our three-man frontlines.

After opening his account for the season at Selhurst Park, the on-loan striker grabbed a goal and assist for England U21s over the recent international break. He’s partnered by Jordan Ayew, with Wilfried Bony on the hosts’ bench.

The Swans’ new arrival Renato Sanches is fast-tracked into the starting XI after joining on loan from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day. Over 116,000 Fantasy Premier League managers acquired the Portuguese international ahead of Gameweek 4.

Similar to their hosts, Newcastle are also braced for a strong run of matches in front of their own fans – five of their next six home matches sees Stoke, Palace, Bournemouth, Watford and Leicester visit St James’ Park.

New boy Joselu leads the line again after scoring on his first start in the 3-0 win over West Ham last time around.

At 5.5, he could rival Abraham in the budget bracket up front, though Christian Atsu’s prospects in midfield are dealt a blow as he drops to the visitors’ bench.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not the same as Mané's. Dangerous play as well, but Mane literally knocked Ederson out, Ritchie never touched Mawson. Yellow rughtfully given.

I agree...there's a fine line between the two incidences but the decisions have both been spot on

Completely true. Shawcross' legbreaking challenge on Ramsey in 2011, for example, was not intentional, dangerous play with a terrible outcome - red. Dangerous play without a touch - yellow.

      Careless, reckless, using excessive force
“Careless” means that the player has shown a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or that he acted without precaution. • No further disciplinary sanction is needed if a foul is judged to be careless
“Reckless” means that the player has acted with complete disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, his opponent. • A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned
“Using excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent. • A player who uses excessive force must be sent off

Both high-feet were exactly the same. Careless, at most Reckless. Both should only have been Yellow cards.

It is still up to the ref to determine the level of danger and base the decision on that. Mane was in full sprint jumped and nearly took Ederson's head off. It was a red, same goes for unintentional leg breaks (that's why I've given an example).

Mane's challenge was excesive force since it was done in full sprint.

so was Ritchie's. he was sprinting for that ball. and he also jumped.

The only difference between the two situations is that Mawson rolled out the way of Ritchie's foot and Ederson shut his eyes and went straight in to Mane's.

Isn't high feet against someone heading the ball a straight Red these days?

Zero consistency across the Refs. 49th minute Ritchie would have been sent off in Man City Liverpool match just like Mane.

    1. Pariße
      • 9 Years

No. Ritchie never touched him, Mane knocked him out, can't you see the difference? Both decisions were correct.

      1. Captain Roberto
        • 6 Years

it's you that isn't seeing the similarity. Both Ritchie and Mane were sprinting, both jumped, both went for t head high ball that another player was going to head. Whether he was "knocked out" (which he clearly wasn't) is neither here nor there.

The difference comes from the actions of Ederson and Mawson ( I think it was him). One went in to the boot full tilt eyes shut, the other moved his head away as he saw the boot coming.

No Liverpool players currently but thinking of Ox as a replacement for Ritchie or Willian given he should start in mane's suspension.

Yeah I don't think he's a long term option, just thinking that he might get the next couple with sadio suspended and have no other Liverpool

        That's pretty conclusive though, avoid!

That's a red card. Only reason he stays on the pitch is because Lawson didn't make a meal of it. It's like going down in the box to get a penalty due to slight contact. If you don't go down, the ref won't give the penalty 9/10 times.

    Refs need to be consistent.

For me, Mane and Ritchie both did identical movements. Exactly the same action. The only difference is Ederson threw his head towards the ball and Mawson didn't. Shouldn't be a change of colour based on what the other player does imo.

    1. Pariße
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

Speed, contact and outcome were completely different. The football law makes both decisions correct.

      1. Obi-1 Kenobi-0
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

You're wrong. The only reason the outcome is different is because Mawson actively moves his head out of the way of Ritchie's flying boot. The actions of Mane and Ritchie are identical, therefore both should be treated identically. Mane shouldn't be punished more because Ederson left his head in and Mawson chose to move his.
