The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 5

This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Alright chaps,

    Antonio + Maguire -> D. Silva + Naughton (-4)?

Don't have enough ITB to do the first transfer by itself and Naughon would play every week.

Is this just point chasing or a good move?

not worth it. Silva may be bench next game easly so not worth a hit.
If you have Antonio than keep imo. After Spurs the have 3-4 nice games

For those of us who still have the wildcard available, is it a good idea to get both Kun and Jesus with the way City are performing? Surely one of them will play and possibly get points, when they both do, like yesterday, it's better. What are your thoughts?

I was just thinking the same thing. Kun & Jesus leave enough for a credible, playing 3rd striker, and it would be easy enough to sell one of them further down the line and have an easy switch to Morata/Lacazette/Firmino. However, a note of caution here, if Kane and/or Lukaku go on a spree and you want to get them in then upgrading Kun or Jesus wont be as easy, and the wildcard will have been played.

Managed to make this team including Kane. Obviously most times 4-3-3 must be played with the available wing backs which in my opinion will surpass many other midfielders:

        Foster / Elliot
        Davies / Jones / Kolasinac / Wimmer / Mee
Salah / Ritchie / Ramsey / Carroll / RLC or Chalobah
        Kane / Kun / Jesus

Altering 4th defender depending on fixture between Mee and Wimmer.

True but will Lukaku / Morata / Firmino / Vardy be in a free scoring team like City currently is doing? Maybe Lukaku and Firmino, maybe. In the case of Firmino points will be shared in that Liverpool team. You tell me even City players can share points between them. KDB / Silva / Sterling / Sane will tick on goals/assists points but most of the goals will be scored by those front two.

Just trying to mention some valid reasons for this. Haven't played my wildcard yet.

People who still have a wildcard? When do you plan to use it and why. There's the 'fixture swing' this week, and then the next international break. Any other valid strategies?

Think I'm dropping it either tonight or international break. Most probably international break. Want to see wing backs from arsenal, Chelsea, city, everton, spurs and so on .. Also still want more time deciding between all the big strikers. Mortata Laca kun Jesus Kane vardy firmino

If you really want to climb back up that mini-league quickly rather than hare and the tortoise style as the months pass, then I'd say play the WC. Maybe Kun and Jesus up front for a few weeks.
Your current team looks decent but I m guessing that in 5 weeks you ve missed big captaincy hauls that others have had. There is still a long way to go and it will even itself out, but if you are looking to get some "fizz" back then WC is the quick answer.

I can just afford this (£0.0 ITB). What do you think as a WC:

    Hart - Elliot
    Alonso - Bailly - Kolasinac - Davies - (Hunemeier)
    Ritchie - Mkhi - Eriksen - Salah - (Carroll)
    Morata - Aguero - (McBurnie)

If you are sceptical about the GK rotation have a look at the fixture rotation.

You can get away with Jones rather than Bailly to save some pennies.

Or consider Maguire since United's fixtures are turning.

GK rotation or not, Fabianski over Hart all day long.

I need to get rid of gabbi. Thinking of lukaku to rashford and gabbi to kun. Have no city and Jones and Mkhy. Something is telling me that I should go Jesus instead. Although he comes off at 60+ minutes I see that as pep protecting his minutes more than kuns? Thoughts

Laid up a goal for Jesus the werk before too.

    Foster - Elliot
    Davies - Jones - Stephens - Daniels - Long
    Salah - Eriksen - Mkhitaryan - Choupo M. - Carroll
    Kane - Lukaku - Abraham

    2 FT 0.9 ITB

Thoughts on Stephens and Lukaku to Kolasinac and Aguero ?

I wouldn't normally support anyone's decision to ditch Lukaku, but if it allows you to bring in Kolasinac and Agüero is the Rom replacement then it really does make sense. Go for it.

Did yesterday Firmino + Mahrez + Antonio -> Aguero + Ramsey + Ritchie for a single hit. Plan to get Hazard after 2-3 GWs when he is totally fit and the fixtures are great. Thoughts?

    Pickford (Elliot)
    Davies, Maguire, Holgate (Dunk, Tuanzebe)
    Alli, Ozil, Ramsey, Ritchie (Cork)
    Wood, Aguero, Kane

You had worse problems in your team than Firmino and Antonio
And you still have those problems and 8 less pts
I would resist playing Saturday transfers next week.

Cheers, thats only 4 points hit and was the reason why i saved FT the previous GW. MCI are scoring lots of goals atm and Antonio -> Ramsey was a move i wanted to do due to Arsenal's 2 next home games. Then two moves i consider are Wood + Ozil -> Carroll + Hazard. What would be your priority?

LIV's next 4 games are ok for me to not have a LIV player. Then i ll find a way to get one, preferably one in the middle.

Hmm.. I wouldn't have brought in Arsenal players before their game this week. Effectively they'll have 2 more games to play where you can get a lot more information from before you can deploy them next weekend

You r right first time over the last 2 years i make a move before the player's game. Fact is i was so pissed yesterday after the Spurs game, having once more no cs, goal or assist points from one player and needed a change. My plan was to get Alexis but used the cash for Kun, so the only alternative was Ramsey. And i wouldnt keep Antonio with Spurs next opponent. Hope he ll be fine, or Cork from the bench will be used. Thanks

Honestly really poor moves. Antonio and Mahrez fixtures are immense, Firmino has been productive and you've sold them for Ritchie and 2 blokes that might not start

Morning! Pretty psyched for this next week!

    Elliot
    Alonso | Jones | Bavies
    Salah | Alli | Atsu | T. Carroll
    Kane (VC) | Firmino | Aguero (C)

    Foster | Lowe | RLC | Tuanzebe

    0FT 0.5ITB

Thinking of using 0.5ITB to do Bavies to Kolasinac in GW7.

2 free transfers. Chicharito out probably. Any ideas, anyone? It would be much appreciated.

    Forster
    Davies Jones Blind Cedric Naughton
    Alli Miki Silva Salah Can
    Morata Firmino Chicarito

It’s a very balanced team in terms of money being spread and I know a lot of you don’t like that. Go easy.

I'm not usually one to jerk at the knees, and quite often do the opposite to the masses, but on this occasion after careful consideration, this Seagull's jerking like a gurken and making his first early transfers.

Jesus to Aguero and Bertrand to Naughton on 2 frees.

Gives me a front 3 of Kane Kun and Lukaku which I intend to stick with for quite some time regardless of any occasional rests.

A risk worth taking with the potential of plenty upside.

    I'm officially a sheep in Seagull's clothing. 🙂

Sideways move from Jesus to Aguero seems a waste.

Aguero not gonna score a hat-trick every week...could easily be Jesus' time to shine next week.

No one will score hat-tricks every week, City are proving to be free-scoring and Aguero will be central to that barring injuries. With the expectation of more gametime over Jesus I don't see it as a sideways move myself.

Pep has showed that it's not one or the other this year, he's got both working as a partnership, they are winning games, scoring goals, not conceding goals, why is he going to change that now?

People can base it on past season, last year was about him finding his team and sussing out the league, looks to me that he's now done both.

        Could be.

But so far there's been a strong pattern emerging of Jesus being subbed extremely early thus limiting his true points potential.

So far, besides the one match at BOU, Pep seems more inclined to keep Aguero playing.

This could all change, hence I called it a risk, but if it doesn't Aguero is worth the extra outlay over Jesus imo. It also cost me nothing, and if things do change I have the luxury of transferring Aguero for any in form striker that may emerge plus have cash left over from what will be some aggressive price increases.

I thought long and hard about this and I'm comfortable with the decision and well aware of it's short comings at face value. 🙂

I like the changes and your front 3 will be the best you can get....
As long as you're happy with the rest of your team, go for it...
Good luck picking a captain though.... 😉

        Thanks.

Captain could be a problem, but whoever has the best home fixture wins. At least if Kun is rested the VC will be sorted. 🙂

Sounds easy, but could be dangerous if you captain Aguero and he comes on for Jesus bagging 1 point..
          You have been warned.... 😛

A very possible scenario and one which I added to my thought process.

            Risk vs reward.

Like I said it's an experimental risk I'm willing to take with all things being taken under consideration.

Doesn't mean it will work, and I certainly won't be harping on about here if it does, because like most things in this game, a lot of it has to do with luck.

As I said, if it doesn't work, Aguero's rising value allows me many options with another 2 frees. 😉

I was wondering, I can go Kane, Lukaku, Kun at the expense of having a midfield of Salah, Alli, Atsu and Chalobah/Carrol
The question is, is there that much value in midfield to sacrifice having such a terrifying striker force ?

I will probably WC to this kind of team during IB if Hazard and Sanchez wont impress me
