The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 5

This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

A lot of help needed, I've played my wildcard and here is the first draft. I would appreciate any constructive feedback thanks.

    GK: Pickford, Elliot
DEF: Alonso, Jones, Kolasinac, Mee & Mbemba
MID: Son, Brady, Gross, Davies, Obiang
    FWD: Kane, Lukaku & Augero

My initial thoughts too much in my defence and my midfield is too weak, what alternatives could I bring in.

Im afriad your right. Money is tight, thought why not try getting in some cheap midfielders. I don't see much valueable midfielder between £5m-£8m.

      I hate the mid 2.

Dont think luk kane & Aguero at the same time is feasible without taling too much from everywhere else.

Defence needs ro be beefed down for starters.

Trippier Otamendi Jones Mbemba 4.5 is as strong as I would go for now.

An abraham or caroll up front also allows those funds in mid

    I need some advices here:

    Elliot/Foster
    Bavies/Jones/Cedric/Lowe/Mbemba
    Eriksen/Miki/Ritchie/TC/Chalobah
    Kane/Kaku/Firmino

    1FT 2.5ITB

My initial play was Cedric to Kola.
Would you stick with it or there is some good way to put City into this team? I think long term I would rather prefer Salah not Firmino however not enough funds to to Miki Firmino to Salah Jesus.
    Ideas ??

With Kolasinac, Cedric and Bavies, do you think I can afford to downgrade Alonso to fund Firm to Aguero?

Knee jerky for sure, but I have Salah for Liv cover. My other move would be to downgrade Alli to someone really cheap while upgrading Chicarito. But that would leave me with three mids at 5.0 or less. Not terribly comfortable with that...

    Any thoughts? Many thanks!

      Team is:

      Eliot/Foster

      Lukaku/Firmino/Chicarito

I'd probably downgrade Bavies. You have 4 defenders you'd play every week at the moment, you can get by with a £4.5 4th defender alongside Mee.

Firm can be upgraded as you have Salah, but there's a real paucity of decent cheap 3rd strikers, they're unicorns this season. So, I'd almost be tempted to downgrade Salah (whose output likely changes with Mané's return) and Bobby.

Chicharito doesn't look worth the outlay.

Its about time fpl slackened up on awarding assists. Good to see Brady getting his back. Long may it continue for others.

I mean their policy on goals are slack. All one has to do is kick towards the target. It can literally take a 45 degree deflection and still be counted. But assists on the other hand get turned down with the slightest bootlace touch.

Fpl is a game. Managers like points. The more the better. It makes no sense to be so strict. In regard to assists. Other games even offer up to two player assists (key contributions as they call them) for the one goal.

I hope this is a sign of things to come and maybe next year they redefine the rules too

The premier league rules for an OG are the same though aren't they? If the first shot is on target, then it will always be the strikers goal.

I know. But fpl don't have to. They can define thier own rules. Like they seem to do for assists. They do not follow same allowances when it comes to assists. They are much stricter. They refuse assists where opta and other media outlets record them . All im saying it they need to slacken up there too and follow the consensus

      • 7 Years

Assists are already much slacker than the true meaning, for precisely the reason you cited.

True meaning = the last touch before the shot.

Giving assists for winning penalties or free kicks, or when a defender touches the ball is as slack as it needs to be

He kept on being played off the ball and wasnt used to this ,asking the ref for protection.Harry at fault for Huddersfield goal.
So leicester can't play as bad again.
Huddersfield showed how to get at them and Harry by hassling

With those home fixtures one of Kun, Jesus looks a great option. City in the purple patch

Yeah and I know that I will end up regretting not owning one. I'm thinking I may do Mkhi to one of Silva or Sterling... probably Silva but will see how Mkhi gets on today..

I am really tempted to use my WC but looking at this season I am still not sure which players will be my season keepers.
Will probably wait few more weeks and hope that picture becomes clearer by then.

I would at least wait til after today's games..
Frustrates me seeing people W/Cing now that don't need too.
Especially when I did mine on the international break and wish I still had it...

    2FT
Hernandez is my poor choice 3rd forward.. really tempted to do

    Lukaku/Hernandez >> Rashford/Kun FT

I'm fully aware of Rashfords reduced mins but two goals and 1 assist in his 1st 4 games he's surely the best option in this price range.

Rooney could be a option with Evertons fine run of fixtures but Everton don't look great going forward.

    Thoughts fellas?

Midfielders below 7.5m. Apart from Ritchie and Gross - who is there? The only reason those two are any good is because of set piece threat. Don't say Aaron Ramsey FFS.

risky. ok for few games but remember that you WC to a team that you will play many months (Xmas period including) so you need a backup GK and playing defs on the bench.

      2. MTPockets
          6 years, 7 months ago

Are you sure Mbemba's nailed? Otheriwse him + 3.9m is too risky.
I'd have Lukaku/Morata/Jesus/Lacazette over Kane right now.

Lukaku has Palace at home after a tricky trip to Southampton.

Kane has two away games against West Ham and Huddersfield, uncaltainable at home you say, he's not at home.

Can also argue that Lukaku is becoming uncaptainable, missing pens and two 6 point returns don't inspire confidence, that off course was in easier games, they stiffen up now and he has a history of missing in those games.

Feels ant jerky but I just don't think I can go without City assets for their current fixture run.

I'm looking at Lukaku and Stephens out for Jesus and Mendy for -4.
