Scout Notes – Gameweek 5 – Sunday

Another big win for Manchester United flatters to deceive as Romelu Lukaku produces a double-figure haul that still may not be enough to halt sales of the Belgian.

Earlier in the day, Chelsea and Arsenal play out a goalless draw which saw David Luiz become the next Chelsea defender to see red to cause a headache for his sizeable ownership.

Here are the notes from Gameweek 5’s final fixtures.

Lukaku’s late show fails to halt sales

When Antonio Valencia crashed the ball into the Everton net four minutes into the match, a 4-0 result looked like the least Man United could expect from their day’s work.

By the end of an often lethargic showing, three late goals put a decidedly flattering gloss on the exact same outcome.

Romelu Lukaku was wasteful until the final flurry in which he scored once – his fifth goal in as many league matches this season – and set up the equally disappointing Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the midfielder’s first strike of the campaign.

Lukaku’s 12-point haul could and should have been doubled. He missed a big chance in the first half having been put through by Juan Mata, and then seemingly surrendered penalty duties to Anthony Martial for United’s fourth goal.

Indeed, post-match, Jose Mourinho provided some insight on that situation – indicating that Lukaku may well have relinquished duties from this point on.

“The penalty-taker today was Juan Mata, but he was out, so I let the players take the decision.”

That may compound matters for Lukaku, who, despite today’s 12-points, continues to see his ownership dwindle.

Over 51,000 managers have already sold him ahead of Gameweek 6 and, having been part of 60% of squads, he is now down to 55.6%, having suffered close to 108,000 sales going into Friday’s deadline.

That still means a majority of managers remain happy with the returns on his 11.7 price tag, though there is a feeling that the Belgian is closer to a barren run than a bonanza.

He led the way with four attempts today, but Jesse Lingard‘s 29-minute cameo produced more penalty area touches (6) than Lukaku’s five, with the substitute’s flick also setting up the forward’s goal.

United’s fixtures are on the cusp of stiffening. A Gameweek 6 trip to a defensively organised Southampton will be tough, although a visit from Crystal Palace a week later should prove rather more fruitful.

After the October international break, however, United will travel to Liverpool and Chelsea and entertain Spurs in what could be a treacherous four-Gameweek spell.

Sergio Aguero‘s 20-point burst at Watford, allied to a long run of good fixtures to come for Man City, has reminded us all that the Argentinian is Fantasy royalty.

More than 216,000 have now bought him since yesterday’s hat-trick, with Roberto Firmino (39000+) and Lukaku (37,000+) the main fall guys.

Mkhitaryan, who tops the FPL midfielder standings after his nine-points against the Toffees, remains a far more popular target than his team-mate, aided by the injury to Paul Pogba.

The Armenian is already the fifth most-bought player for Gameweek 6, with the majority (as happened ahead of Gameweek 5) swapping him in for Pogba.

And United assets at the back are still delivering good returns, with Phil Jones (5.1) unlucky not to sweep up bonus points – his baseline of 17 was easily the strongest in the Red Devils’ defence – with only Valencia’s goal scuppering the chances of extra points.

As for Everton, their horrifically tough start to the season is now at an end, and it’s come at a heavy price.

The side have been winless since a narrow Gameweek 1 victory over Stoke City, and they’ve lost three straight in the league, conceding ever more goals as they’ve gone.

Confidence is low, and their attack is toothless – only Swansea City have managed fewer attempts than the Toffees’ 42 (Spurs lead the way with 105).

At 4.3, right back/wing-back Cuco Martina could be a bargain now that Everton’s schedule takes a turn for the better (BOU, BUR, bri). We’ll learn more as to his starting credentials when coach Ronald Koeman decides on his line-up for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Sunderland.

No goals, but points to be had

Arsenal visiting Chelsea and leaving with a point from a goalless draw was one of the more surprising results of the weekend.

It was great news for the 10.9% of managers who tempted fate by sticking by Sead Kolasinac, the muscular Bosnian recording a second consecutive clean sheet to keep him top of the Gunners’ defensive standings with 23 points.

His added attacking threat just about justifies the hefty 6.0 outlay he demands, and if Arsenal can continue to show the resilience on display at Stamford Bridge, he looks the most attractive route into an often untrustworthy backline.

The match was not a classic – Danny Welbeck led the way for goal attempts with a meagre three – and it was another case of wait and see when it came to the sides’ two big-ticket men Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard.

Both had to make do with appearances from the bench and the 11.9 required to secure Sanchez’s services looks too high a price to be pay until he’s starting and scoring regularly, even with an immediate schedule – WBA BHA wat – that promises much.

Hazard, at 10.5, is rather kinder on the wallet, and Chelsea’s fixtures are even better, a Gameweek 7 visit from a rampant Man City notwithstanding.

But coach Antonio Conte has made it clear he will not be rushing the Belgian back into action too quickly, and neither should we if he continues to be given limited pitch-time.

That Man City match will have to be endured without David Luiz as the 24.0%-owned Brazilian was given a straight red towards the end of today’s encounter.

The centre-half, an ever-present at the heart of the defence this season, will now miss two Gameweeks, with Antonio Rudiger his most likely replacement.

Luiz at least left it until he’d earned his owners a clean sheet. The 21.2%-owned Marcos Alonso was also in the points, but he was way off the bonus points with a BPS score of just 20 – only Luiz recorded a lower score among the Blues’ backline.

His 68% pass completion rate had much to do with that and the Spaniard’s net ownership is currently in decline, even though the 30 points he’s racked up makes him the highest-scoring Chelsea defender.

It would seem, however, that FPL managers expect extra from Alonso – like his two-goal, 16-point show stopper against Spurs, for instance.

For a price of 7.1, they may have a point, but Alonso is still producing consistent returns, and only five defenders have scored more points than him thus far.

One big-name player not producing so regularly is Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

His 11.5% ownership base has paid 10.4 for 17 points to date, but after scoring against Bournemouth last time out, he was subbed off on 66 minutes at Chelsea having mustered just a single shot on target – a big chance he failed to convert.

The competition for places in our forward lines is intense. Twelve strikers have scored more points than Lacazette, while just three of them cost more than the Frenchman.

His days of double-digit ownership look numbered.

    Fabianski (de gea)
    Ward-kolasinac-bellerin-davies
    Martial-silva-mahrez
    Vokes-lukaku-firmino
Subs: De Gea, Tadic, Fer, Daniels

I used my free transfer option for Silva, deleted Antonio (WHU).
Should I spend more points to change ward, martial (never played 90 min), bellerin, mahrez, vokes or firmino? I think about hazard, salah, kane etc.
Or should i try to buy Groß, ritchie, lascelles?

As it turns out, Martial is looking like a fairly good risky pick. I'd be wanting rid when possible, but for now just hold him

What I picked up from the weekend that I thought different at the beginning of the season.
Even with Everton fixtures you can't bring any in.
    Arsenal play better without Ozil.
Can't second guess when Fab will play.
You have to have a City asset.
Bavies, Trippier, Aurier, Son all good assets but there must be cover on the bench.
    Uncertainty about Kolasinac has gone.
    Midfield options are guesswork.
5 big hitter wing backs at the back is an option.
Salah is the best Pool option.

Not sure Arsenal play better without him generally, but they work harder up front for sure.

They lacked any real quality in the final third imo, Ozil adds that, but perhaps he should only play in easier games

Only managed 10 players this week having a 5th non football playing defender does have its risks.

Got rid of Stephens for Otamendi last night and hopefully Davies is fit for Saturday

Meh. Gain 2 points at best. 4.0 for the last spot seems ideal to me

I'm not going to change my team to get a 5th playing defender I fully expected Stephens to get bench but not Davies but now he is gone I do not have to worry about that one

Crazy - I owned the top five players in the captain poll this week, including runaway leader Kane. Four blanks and lukaku.

The points rolling in without a player playing particularly well is one of the biggest draws for me.

Imagine the scores Lukaku will be getting when in form

My concerns would be when United have more testing fixtures. Not in Mourinhos character to get forward and Kaku has a tendency to be anonymous in big games.

Disagree with that. He doesn't attack when he isn't confident in his side's ability. Whenever he's been happy with his squad, his team's have been rampant.

Also not sure how Lukaku is billed as a flat track bully. Maybe last season yes, but generally his trolling status has come from doing well in unexpected games and blanking in easier ones

I watched him for Everton who,I admit are not Man U and I can tell you all of us toffees got frustrated beyond belief at times.
I forgot to mention, naming mata as the penalty taker is a concern too.

But Mata is not guaranteed starter. Also Lukaku has done well without the penalty duties.

Yeah the penalties do make a difference. I'd consider selling for Aguero if Jesus got injured, or vice versa. Not keen on Morata. Possibly may go to Vardy, but unlikely

Just ship Lukaku out for the form striker then, Kun, Jesus, Vardy, Morata. But till then I'd hold Lukaku.

I meant ship Lukaku when you feel his fixtures turn bad, not now. I wouldn't think of dropping him now. I made a mistake of Kun -> Kane this gone week, but that's hindsight, this was planned way before. But still kept Lukaku. I'm a city and Argentina supporter BTW.

His RM team blitzed all records with 121 La Liga goals in 11/12. When he has the team for it he lets the horses run. 😉

The point is that your "not in Mourinho's character" comment is wrong.

Let me tell you, I go to lots of Chelsea games and I know Mourinho well as a manager. The recent games where United were 1-0 or 2-0 up late on are games he would have closed down at Chelsea. What he is doing at United is different.

He's no fool and he knows that United must be an attacking team. He is very well aware of history and expectations. Whereas you are just trotting out tired stereotypes.

How can you compare Madrid in La Liga to the ultra competitive PL where he knows anyone can beat him?

This is the same manager who drew plenty of games last year and got stuck in 6th as a result, bizarre to think he's going to start being gung no based on the fact that in three games this season the teams they've been playing have collapsed in the final ten mins of games, that s not going to happen when they meet team who are up a level and Jose is a manager where he's makes sure he doesn't lose first, how many Chelsea games you went to doesn't mean much, United are not Chelsea and he faces a different sort of pressure to beat Pep to the title.

This is the same Mourhino that played six defenders at the Emirates last year, not sure he's all of a sudden encouraging attacking football, they've been fortunate this season, their big wins have been massively flattering.

I am not making that comparison so your entire post is misplaced. 🙂

What I was addressing was the erroneous concept that "it's not in Mourinho's character to get forward". The fact that RM scored more goals in La Liga in his 2nd season there than Guardiola's Barcelona ever did gives the lie to that statement. The fact that Chelsea were in the top 3 teams for goals scored in each of Mourinho's 4 full seasons at the club also gives the lie to it.

All you have to contradict those facts is an unfounded opinion which you are asserting with a lot of bluster and noise. As usual.

La Liga is a two/three team league, his team (with those players) are going to win a lot of games and score a lot of goals, it doesn't tell us much and neither does his Chelsea teams who at the time could buy who they wanted and were so much better than anyone else.

I think if you want to make a proper comparison as opposed to one that's bent to fit a point we should look at more recent times ie last season, how many goals did his United team score? Not much has changed apart from Lukaku in and Ibra out on the creative side, think that team was closer to 50 goals than 100 and you can't really take much from the start of this season to assume anything has changed, three collapses which padded their goal scoring numbers up by 7 or 8 goals, the Swansea game and even the Everton one was very flattering, the score certainly didn't reflect the style of the performance.

The true test of how much of a goalscoring threat they are will be gauged after they play some proper teams in the next few weeks, Southampton, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea will all put up a firmer test, I'm sure they will be more tighter affairs than his horses running free at the end of the game when the other teams have waved the white flag.

              Bluster and noise 🙂 ditto.

No. My only comment was that it is incorrect to classify Mourinho in that way. And it is. Everything else is you arguing with yourself. 🙂

                  Where's the contradiction Chapelle?

It's explaining why Jose can be viewed as a manager who prefers not to lose rather than entertain (based on recent evidence) while explaining why it's not best to compare different eras for him where he didn't need to worry about not losing.

                  1. Freddo

One final recent point to sign off on, this is the same Jose who played six defenders at the Emirates and who parked the bus against the Ajax youth team in the Europa League Final, to talk about that time he had a team of Galacticos at his disposal or that time when Chelsea were dominanant and not the team who just finished sixth is only telling half the story.

Judging this new attacking force after games against West Ham, Swansea, Leicester, Everton and Stoke seems a little premature, maybe after their next five or six (which include Southampton, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea) might we be able to form a more accurate view.

Apologies if I've gone off tangent.
