Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Sunday

The Fantasy Premier League’s biggest midfield guns give it their Sunday best across Europe and Africa, while Harry Kane is at it again for an otherwise drab England.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s World Cup qualifiers.

Big hitters wield their influence

The four most popular midfielders in Fantasy Premier League were all in action last night.

And all four brought cheer, of varying sizes, to their owners.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (34.1%) hit a historic double for Egypt as they qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 27 years with a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Congo.

The Reds winger converted a 95th-minute penalty to win a tense match in which Premier League players Ahmed Hegazi, Ramadan Sobhi, who played 87 minutes, and Mohamed Elneny also featured, with West Brom centre-half Hegazi having one effort cleared off the line.

Salah now has seven goals in all competitions this season, but back-to-back matches against Manchester United and Chelsea will test a player whose 16.7% conversion rate is the second-worst among the top eight scorers from midfield.

United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (32.3%) opened the scoring for Armenia in their 1-1 draw away in Kazakhstan.

Mkhitaryan is the fourth most sold player since Gameweek 7 came to an end, with 101,000+ managers seeking pastures new as United’s schedule also stiffens – Jose Mourinho’s men face Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea over their next four fixtures.

Spurs’ Dele Alli (27.4%) is just below Mkhitaryan in the transfers-out table as more than 96,000 FPL bosses have reacted to a barren spell in which he hasn’t scored in the league since Gameweek 3.

Alli did provide two assists in Gameweek 6’s win over West Ham and followed that up with another one for England last night as he was fouled for the decisive penalty in the Three Lions’ underwhelming 1-0 win in Lithuania.

Spurs’ schedule is another that is turning tough – BOU LIV mun CRY ars – and trust in Alli is suffering as a result.

The same can’t be said for Alli’s team-mate Christian Eriksen (25.7%), who scored for Denmark for the second consecutive match, converting a penalty in the Danes’ 1-1 draw with Romania.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen and Leicester City keeper Kasper Schmeichel played the full 90 minutes alongside Eriksen, with FPL managers divided as to the midfielder’s appeal – nearly 44,000 have moved him out this week, with another 36,000+ acquiring his services.

It’s Kane…again

One Spurs player seemingly impervious to the matter of fixtures is Harry Kane.

The in-form striker scored the winner in Lithuania – his second goal of the international break – and also has six goals from his last four league matches.

That run has persuaded over 280,000 managers to make him FPL’s most bought player of the Gameweek, although he played the full 180 minutes of October’s international schedule.

England boss Gareth Southgate chopped and changed over that break, with the 14.0%-owned Man City full-back Kyle Walker given the night off in Vilnius. Spurs’ Kieran Trippier (4.3%) took his place.

On the other flank, West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell played at left wing-back as the 11.4%-owned Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand returned to his club as a precaution following recent back problems.

The 8.7%-owned United striker Marcus Rashford did start both matches, however, as did Walker’s team-mate John Stones (7.9%).

But another City man, Raheem Sterling (6.1%) watched on from the bench.

Mustafi adds to Gunners’ concerns…

Arsenal centre-half Shkodran Mustafi lasted only 36 minutes of Germany’s 5-1 win over Azerbaijan before limping off with a thigh problem.

German coach Joachim Low appears pessimistic on the prognosis for the defender.

“I think Mustafi has a muscle tear. It looks a bit more serious. A hamstring injury to a muscle tear, we have to wait for the exact diagnosis, but he’ll probably be out for a long time.”

With Laurent Koscielny missing the Gameweek 7 victory over Brighton with ongoing Achilles problems, Arsene Wenger’s defence is suddenly appearing uncertain ahead of their visit to Watford next weekend.

The Gunners have kept four consecutive clean sheets prior to that Gameweek 8 trip, with Nacho Monreal collecting over 75,000 new owners as the third most signed defender over the break.

Calum Chambers is also recovering from a hip problem, so it would appear that Rob Holding (4.7) is set to retain his start in the back three should Mustafi – as expected – be sidelined for a sustained period.

Emre Can and Antonio Rudiger scored for the Germans, while Leroy Sane provided an assist in a convincing victory.

The Liverpool and Man City players started and finished the match, while Chelsea’s Rudiger came on in the 22nd minute.

Elsewhere…

A Chris Brunt own goal proved decisive in Norway’s 1-0 win over Northern Ireland.

Bournemouth’s Josh King missed the fixture with a hamstring problem picked up in Norway’s 8-0 drubbing of San Marino on Thursday, but Brunt, Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans and Steven Davis all played the full match for the visitors.

Andrew Robertson, Darren Fletcher and Matty Phillips started and finished Scotland’s 2-2 draw in Slovenia, while Crystal Palace’s James McArthur played 79 minutes.

A good strat this year could be to chop and change the strikers anyway. With 4 or 5 premium options all performing it could be wise to pick and drop them based on fixtures rather than picking season keepers and sticking with them.

Think that int'l break wildcard bump is amplifying his sales. High price tag + tougher fixtures + no Pogba. Even if they might otherwise keep, if you are on WC, you want to change things up, and keeping Lukaku restricts that.

I have four players flagged today but they're yellow at least.
Six forced transfers so far this season: Zaha, Walker, Pogba, Mendy, Aguero and this week Morata!
Last year I rarely had an injury all season and finished top 5k, luck of the draw eh!
How significant do you feel forced transfers, due to injuries/suspensions, are to OR?

they are a factor, but you get the chance to replace them with FTs (or WCs) so its not that big.

As always, it depends on the context, the ownership, and who you are bringing in. Zaha is not a particularly bad forced transfer - Palace were poor, and you would have had to get rid of him anyway in view of their fixtures. It may have even been a blessing in disguise. The rest are unfortunate, but Walker only missed one game didnt he? And save for Mendy, many would have had to go through the same thing.

I went through the unfortunate move of Morata - Aguero (missing his hat-trick), back to Morata (in time for his injury and blank). I expect many on here had the same issue.

Obviously a lack of injuries is better, but sometimes they bring about opportunities too.

        Fair points made there, cheers!
I brought in both Mendy & Aguero together and had to get rid of both a week later after Mendy's zero pointer, which was unfortunate!
Ouch to your Morata-Kun-Morata hokey cokey, better luck from here on to you!

    Opinion:

Jose to go 3-4-3 (Bus number 5-4-1) this week due to lack of midfield grit.

Lingard isn't grit. Those two are the full extent of united's central midfielders, therefore has to be a 4. Jose plays 4-3-3 versus better teams and without Pogba of Fellaini can't.

Indeed he does. Going for a back 3 is arguably less solid though and not sure whether it's the most sensible idea against Liverpool considering they'll use Firmino as a false 9 and attack from wide - they'll end up dominating midfield.

Lingard is pretty hard working and will do a job out wide against Moreno/TAA

Jesus - You're out of your depth here.

Back 3 (5) means Pool can't target the wide positions. Firmino isn't the danger, he's the distraction, Coutinho is the danger and will sit deep. Matic & Herrera can deal with him out there. IMO back 3 (5) is the only way Jose can nullify the wide threat by flooding the wings with 4 roaming midfielders.

5 on 5 at the back (Moreno, TAA pushed up), 2 on Coutinho and 2 on Hendo/Can (who couldn't be any less of a danger if they tried!

When Lallana comes back, then this tactic wouldn't work as he, is dangerous.

Well, no need for that. I disagree completely.

In a back 4 you have both fullbacks and wide mids protecting the wings. In a back 3, your left with a spare CB (perhaps 2) marking no one for most of the game against a flase 9. Matic and Herrera could get out wide granted, but they'd be more effective centrally with wingers and full backs protecting the wings imo.

Have you seen Liverpool play? They prey on the space between CB & FB. An extra CB kills that space, add to that a wing back narrowing Pool in 2 on 1. Furthermore, it ensures Salah & Mane will never get 1 on 1 with the last man (in behind tactic). Be under no illusion here, Jose won't try and win.

Matic and Hererra wouldn't go wide. They would patrol Coutinho 2 on 1. Rashford & Mkhi would drop in to make a 4 covering TAA & Moreno meaning that every danger man in 2 on 1'd.

I see we just completely disagree with our assessment of how a back 3 functions.

And yes, I am aware of how Liverpool play. The idea of defending the space between full back and centre back has been around long before a back 3 was popular in the English game.

Sterling now, Silva long term. Sane would be my favourite if he played regularly.

Sterling is great when on form, but the problem is that he habitually goes through bad form periods, and the return of Kun will endanger his place in the team. There will be points in the season when Sane will displace Sterling, based on form. I expect that Silva will be regular starter throughout the season, and Bernardo does not look like threatening his role.

Ultimately, the attractiveness of each proposition will change throughout the season. But all 3, and Sterling and Silva in particular, look good at the moment.

This is from the source article:

Etihad sources, however, insist his painful condition has made significant improvement in the last few days and there are even suggestions the 29-year-old could now make a return quicker than anticipated.

City's doctors have already assessed Aguero, who is asking for the go-ahead to maintain his core fitness and see how he fares in some light sessions.

Aguero had started this season on fire, scoring seven goals in eight appearances, prior to his misfortune in the Dutch capital.

The Citizens may look to use oxygen therapy to further speed up the healing process of their main forward, although club insiders are still maintaining they will be taking no risks with 'Kun'.

    On WC,

    Fabianski (Elliot)
    Davies, Otamendi ,Cedric, Azpilicueta (Mbemba)
Hazard, David Silva, Carroll (Choupo-Moting) (Surman)
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

GTG or any changes you good folk can suggest?

    My concerns are:
    - Mbemba (May have lost place but plan on always benching anyway)
    - Hazard (Too soon?)
    - Mids a bit weak in general but struggling to get excited about any mid-price options now Fellaini is out of action (would go Richarlison but next 2 fixtures look horrid)

Don't buy your 4th mid (3rd here) based on two fixtures?
I'm not loving Tom Carroll as a 3rd mid.
If you get Mbemba to 4.1 you have a nice 0.1 buffer on your 5th defender.
I like the gamble on Hazard now, and I'm looking to do the same

I still have Redmond stinking up my squad and now I feel there is a chance he gets benched. Finally time to ditch? Would be for a hit but, Redmond > Sterling or wait one week and perhaps go with RLC as part of a step to 433?

    Cheers

He has been a “decent” differential for weeks now 😆

If I was sure he would start I would be more inclined to keep but I think the manager is losing patience and has been taking him off early

Looking for some feedback on this:

    Fab
    Azpi Bavies Ward Cedric
    Silva Hazard Chupo-Moting
    Kane Jesus Vardy

    Elliot Dunk Caroll Loftus-Cheek

Im debating Alonso over Azpi and Sterling over Silva.

Want to take a gamble on Hazard but Jonty makes a good point about the potential to Captain, I dont particularly fancy Eriksen or Salah from now on (though I did have them pre WC)

    Thanks.

dont have Kane, plan to do Morata & Salah to Kane & Sterling for a -4, make sense? then get Salah or Coutinho in for Eriksen after next couple of games, sound ok?

Seems fair enough to me, because Kane is so important, and is comfortably the best Morata replacement long term. I think Salah is a wonderful FPL player, but moving him out for the next 2 is understandable.

had him since the start and he's been very good, but very frustrating to watch. wastes so many opportunities by either picking the wrong option or finishing poorly. the newcastle game was the last straw

He is wasteful but is still the third best midfield scorer (2 points off Eriksen), which is very impressive for a first season.

I expect a monster haul from him at some point too, because he gets into so many great opportunities.

The issue is the one footed-ness.

I know Utd are not flavour of the week, but I think Pool and Huddersfield are relatively easy fixtures.
    A. Lukaku and Ritchie/6mil or B. Rashford and Eriksen.

Any thoughts please on this WC draft? Cheers.

    Fabianski / Elliot

Azpilicueta – Kolasinac – Davies – Cresswell (Mariappa or another 4m)

    Silva – Mkhitaryan – Ramsey (RLC/Carroll)

    Kane – Jesus - Vardy

I'd have two 4.5s instead of Cresswell and a 4.0. I dont understand the lack of Burnley coverage. Imo, Fab, Cresswell and the 4.0 for Ryan, Mee, and Fernandez.

the team is solid, but I'm not sold on Ramsey and I think Mkhitaryan will regress. I'd look at Mkhit and Ramsey out for another two options.

It's very good though and will certainly score well

Slightly abstract post to pass the FPL down-time.

Tactic lovers, whats your favourite (real world) formation and why?

can't really say what your favorite formation is as depends on the players you have! i.e. real life isn't FIFA.

on the subject though, Conte doesn't get anywhere near enough credit imo for revitalizing the 3 at the back system.

Fair point mate - nicely put.

Interesting that he formerly preferred 3-5-2, said Chelsea weren't suited to it and, has since bolstered his box to box options (Baka-Fab-Kante through the centre)....Wilian & Pedro could be dead as fantasy options before long!

          • 14 Years

Actually was 4-2-4 (semantics but that's what he calls it) he was trying to implement at Chelsea. Looking at the squad as a whole he was right they were more suited to that, but he overlooked the fact the first 11 were well suited to the 3-4-3 (albeit with no depth) and he adjusted in time. Great coach.

He does seem to be open to 3-5-2 to accommodate Fabregas without sacrificing the engine room. Fwiw he now has the perfect pairing for the 424 that he also loves. A frontline of willian Hazard morata pedro would be brutal. A lot of work from Kante, bakayoko and the defenders to make it work though.

I don't have a favourite system. I love the tactical part of the modern game though. Fascinates me.

Have to disagree mate, he said they weren't suited to 3-5-2 so trialled 4-2-4 ultimately balancing on 3-4-3.
3-5-2 is his fave and I can see him sacrificing Willian or Pedro this year.

How's this for WC team guys?

    Fabianksi Elliot
    Rosenior Clark Davies Cedric Ward
    Silva Coutinho Sterling Gross 4.4
    Vardy Kane Lukaku

Would ideally want Chelsea coverage so could potentially transfer Lukaku to Morata once he's back.

    Any suggestions are much appreciated!
