Technical Area – The Man City Midfield

Through the first two months of the season, no side has scored more frequently than Manchester City.

In their second season under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage, City have averaged more than three goals per match to open this campaign and already look to be mounting the strongest title challenge on show.

With Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus as options in attack, we are blessed with two obvious routes to investment. However, reading Pep Guardiola’s intentions with the pair remains a test, made all the more difficult by the news of Aguero’s return to light training following his rib injury.

Just as Gabriel Jesus seemed cemented in the central attacking role, suddenly Aguero’s return seems more imminent, casting further doubts on the likely minutes of the pair over forthcoming Gameweeks.

So, instead, our attentions are drawn to City’s midfield in an effort to achieve coverage of this potent attacking unit while we wait for the striker situation to resolve.

In this article, we’ll be running the rule over three mid-priced Manchester City midfield options – David Silva, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling – alongside the more expensive Kevin De Bruyne, in an effort to ascertain where best to seek value from this side over the coming Gameweeks.

Brazil are so stacked. That lineup vs Chile is unreal. Fernandinho over Renato Augusto, and maybe (not really necessary) Thiago Silva and David Luiz instead of Miranda and Marquinhos...walking to WC Glory 2018. Definite favorites in my book.

They are too soft mentally for my liking. Germany are still my favourites after that Confed perfomance from their 2nd string team

Talk about soft mentally, that's been Argentina's issue forever. Big Brazilian issue too but that seems to have changed under Tito.

They've also got more quality on the bench than Germany imo. Definitely between those two and maybe Belgium if they get their sh**e together.

If Brazil had a striker (a true No.9) they would be amongst the favourites. Their bench is great defensively and in midfield only.

Argentina will do better if they solve their creative midfielder conundrum. Messi drops too deep, too often.

Germany just have the perfect blend of athleticism and tactically astute players with the mentality to match.

Belgium just have an inferiority complex, I hope they get their heads right this time

Maybe City bias, but I think Jesus is gonna light up 2018. There's a reason why Ronaldo sees so much of him in Jesus's playing style. I don't think they play a system that favors a typical No.9 either.

Argentina just has to play the right lineup. Best offense in the world. Could have a better defence with the right selections.

            Germany is Germany.

Belgium are the real dark horses. Lots of elite talent in that team.

The only reason they have Pulisic is Klinsmann. He was starting a real revolution and they tossed him out.

Your basically rushing Sterling in for a hit for one game (the next game. Id rather play Miki away to hudersfield than Sterling home to Burnley (or at least call it n even) and then do the transfer for free after that..

Imo your counting on Sterling to outscore Miki by 4 points in the next gw.

I have other moves pencilled in and those can't be justified for a hit so makes a lot of sense to do the Mkhi transfer now. Also weren't Crystal Palace and Southampton supposed to be great fixtures for Mkhi?

Bench is absolutely fine, tean looks great but don't like Ramsey, would go Richarlison/Choupo and use the money elsewhere or punt on Fabregas if you fancy

Is this a WC team? Yeah, ideally you upgrade Rangel to a 4.4m/4.5m playing defender. Not sure how you get 0.5m though.

Yeh WC team, mainly chosen with fixtures in mind hence the Ramsey pick. Yes i agree about Rangel but im struggling to choose who to drop too.

I think he's been good against the weaker teams, has had a decent amount of chances of late and has been unlucky not to score...i agree that his current tally doesnt look great.

If it were down to me, Argentina lineup at WC (if we make it) would be:
    --------------------Rulli----------------------
    Mercado-Otamendi-Musacchio-Rojo
    -----------Banega-----Biglia--------------
    ---Messi---------Dybala--------Gomez--
    -------------------Aguero-------------------
    Bench: Romero-Mascherano-Tagliafico-Pastore-Di Maria-Higuain-Icardi

Who are the attackers Benedetto & Salvio that are playing now Kun? Don't know anything about those two if I'm honest.

Benedetto plays for Boca, Salvio plays for Benfica. Salvio was hot commodity when he was younger, kinda tailed off but a really decent player nonetheless. Benedetto tears it up in the Argentine league but that's not saying much on the international stage.

Cheers. No wonder I havent heard of Benedetto. Had heard of Salvio before I think alright now that you mention it...but why is he going with those when he has the likes of Dybala at his disposal? Could have been a disaster!

When it comes down to it, he's trying to be too smart. If a manager just plays the best player in each position Argentina is top 3 contenders for winning the World Cup.

Semms that way alright and I agree, you have a superb potential starting XI and with Messi could easily win the thing! I would put you a close third behind Brazil & Germany if the right team is selected. Well done on getting through, looked scary for a while.

      Romero

Was tempted to go Banega-Pastore myself but not defensive enough. Maybe that would be a good lineup against teams that park the bus.

Firmly believe in Gomez over Di Maria myself. Would be content with Icardi over Kun but don't know if he can offer much apart from being a target man. Masch is aging, very obvious just by watching him play nowadays. Musacchio or Garay should be starting over him imo, maybe Mammana.

        1. Ghost Gooner
          • 10 Years

Pastore has enough discipline to play in mid and it would add creativity which is one of the reasons Messi drops too often. Masch is there for experience which Musacchio lacks at the elite stage. Garay is average imo.

Di Maria needs to play like he did for RM when he played LCM. Icardi is the better finisher over Higuain and can still be reference point for the smaller attackers
