The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 9

Just for a moment there, we thought we had Pep worked out.

After meticulously studying his selections, we were beginning to gain confidence that his days of meddling with our Gameweek tallies were over. We were almost complacent.

The tide of goals and points produced by his Manchester City side were more than a little seductive. But they were a siren song, tempting us to sail towards the rocky outlines of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, only to be shipwrecked by Guardiola’s teamsheet.

We always knew that Sergio Aguero was pivotal to his selection today. Many expected the start for the Argentine, but the smart money was on both Sterling and, to a lesser extent, Jesus be alongside him.

Between them, that pair had picked up 673,000 new owners who, this evening, have just a single point to show for their investment.

More significantly, some 586,000 or 11.3%, had the armband with Jesus. That included 36 of the top 100 managers heading into Gameweek 9 – the top choice among that leading pack.

Meanwhile, others had him as their vice-captain with Sterling – who was a total no-show – as their primary skipper. A double-blow.

It appears that Guardiola was biding his time, welcoming us in and reassuring us, before hitting us with a sucker punch.

So now we have to regroup, assess the damage and attempt to decode this latest situation with new data.

There were perhaps two factors at play.

For one, City faced their toughest test so far in the Champions League against Napoli in midweek.

Secondly, maybe there was a desire to give Aguero the opportunity of a start at the Etihad with the club scoring record in his sights.

In the end, he scored the goal to equal Eric Brook’s record and, interestingly, Guardiola again acknowledged post-match the importance of achieving this milestone quickly.

“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

That would hint that Aguero will get another run-out on home turf against Wolves in the EFL Cup – the chance to break the record in front of his own supporters, rather than at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 10. Perhaps.

We can only really speculate. But what is of more concern is that, with a second tie with Napoli to arrive after the West Brom clash, we have to presume that Guardiola will have this in mind.

City sit clear on top of their group; they can afford to drop points but, after 11 successive victories in all competitions, Guardiola will not want to scupper the current momentum.

With Aguero, Jesus and Sterling – along with Bernando Silva and Leroy Sane – once described as his “five strikers”, just how will Pep now approach matters?

Previously convinced that his “central strikers” – Aguero and Jesus – would be paired together, are we now to accept that Guardiola has broken from this pattern? And if so, can we really ride with that?

Tonight Aguero is already the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 10. Meanwhile, Jesus ranks second for sales.

However, there is every chance that Aguero will be saved for Napoli while Jesus starts against the Baggies in Gameweek 10.

While we can study his selection patterns further and make assumptions, we seem unlikely to crack Guardiola’s code.

If we are to invest in City’s attack, we have to accept the anxiety and disappointment witnessed today, else perhaps settle for David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, to this point, seem immune to the tinkerings.

It’s becoming a fascinating sub-plot to a season that continues to test and tease.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The striker hokey cokey became popular last season. I wonder though if it has proved successful more often than not, and if doing so and neglecting the rest of your team as a result, is worth it. I say this because people are getting Kun in to get Kaku back for GW12

As Manu are playing so far I feel no urgent need to bring back Kaku.. their opening games were a bit lucky in terms of the amount of goals scored.. dont think it was a fair reflection of their offensive abilities... rather have Kun Kane Firmino as my front three

Is it really worth it? Kun has Leicester, Huddersfield, Southampton & West Ham in successive matches, City look like they'll be scoring many more goals than United. Plus Kaku only looks like getting the single goal in easier matches. Kun isn't leaving my side unless injured. Kane is the one at risk of getting the chop if he blanks vs Crystal Palace

Could see Lukaku at best getting a goal in the next two. Kun even with limited game time will easily outscore Lukaku.

Silva Sterling Sané in your midfield. Cheapest attackers and as long as you don't captain them and have an alright bench, think you'll do well. Also allows for 2 of Kane/Morata/Hazard/Lukaku.

Sane and sterling are even bigger rotation rsk than Kun.. even bigger than Jesus. Silva is not explosive enough

This seems to be the pecking order:
            1. Aguero
            2. Jesus
            3. SANE/sterling with the former getting the nod on the eye test
            4. B silva

              You haven't understood my points.

It isn't about predicting the pecking order.

You have to accept that everyone will get rotated and benched at some point without warning.

This makes Agüero and Jesus too expensive as you can't captain them/have them blank at their prices.

How best to cover City's attack? Pick the 3 players that are the cheapest and that regualarly get big scores. Sterling Sané Silva.

Look back over the past 5 gameweeks, imagining you have those 3, don't captain them and have someone ok on the bench like Choupo/Douco.

I actually quite like your thinking here. Could be onto something. But I think you underestimate how much Kun will be favoured. He will start most games and he's the best attacker they have. And has pens.

I really did understand it. But having both sane and sterling will mean that at least one.of them more often than not will be benched as Jesus and Aguero is in front in the pecking ordee.. Rather have just Kun and Silva for that matter.. one nailed and one explosive who will play 90% of the games (Aguero) according to Pep

I don't think Sané is competing with any of those. He'll play until Guardiola finds a different way to compose the left side. Delph is continuously positioning as a deep midfielder while Sané stays wide. Sterling and Jesus can't play as a left winger the same way.

Kun is still the highest scoring forward in the game despite the missed gametime. He is the best captain option in the game when you take into account City's goal-scoring capabilities and his own explosiveness and reliability. I'll take the odd benching if he's bracing/getting hat tricks in the other matches.

Yes, likely Kaku blanks in the next 2, Kun should do well and going forward I'd rather Kun given his and City's explosiveness

Jesus and Sterling will surely feature next game.
      Hold Davies for now.
Monitor Jones or Jones > Moreno
Hold Vardy or even Vardy > Firmino.

I have wild carded in GW8 to triple Man City attack and sticking with it. Kun, sane and sterling is the way forward for me. Have done 3-5-2.

Need to decide what to do with Lukaku now. Morata was unconvincing. Only sensible option looks Firmino to me.

    Fabianski (Elliot)
    Alonso Davies Jones (Mee Long)
    Salah Erikson Silva CM Brady
    Kane Jesus (Quaner)

Fair few changes I want to make with aguero and richarlison looking great, Jesus Brady and Alonso not so much.

Any suggestions would be very welcome

Yeah looking like I'll have to ditch Alonso at some point to free up funds elsewhere, then it's probably Brady > richarlison, Jesus > aguero, or both. Not sure whether to wait a week though

    Pope (Elliot)
    Davies Stones Maguire Ward (Wimmer)
    Hazard Eriksen Choupo-Moting (RLC King)
    Kane Jesus Vardy
    2FT, 0.1itb

    A) Jesus > Morata
    B) Jesus, Hazard > Aguero, Coutinho
    C) Jesus, Hazard, King > Morata, Coutinho, Richarlison (-4)
    D) Hazard, King > Silva, Richarlison

Too many options!! Was definitely going to get rid of Hazard but now I'm not so sure... Any advice appreciated

Once again matching ML players for C has failed. As suspected those without Lukaku chose Jesus and I didn't have the guts to keep C on Kane who is an ML differential.

That said not horrific week 43(-4) with Kane and Bavies(or Dunk 6pts) to go
