The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 10

And now it seems that Leroy Sane is Pep’s new favourite. Surely we can’t go on like this, bending to Guardiola’s whims and moving from player to player as he switches his affections?

And yet, as this is typed, Fantasy managers are doing just that, making way for Leroy Sane’s arrival in their squad by selling David Silva and even Raheem Sterling. Just as last week we saw thousands eject Gabriel Jesus to welcome back Sergio Aguero.

As it turned out, that move went unpunished. The Brazilian could not deliver at The Hawthorns on starting ahead of Aguero, failing to even record a single shot on goal in a match that City dominated and registered 15 attempts.

That’s an alarming statistic and one that hardly offers encouragement for his security of start. Jesus’ owners will already be concerned that today’s decision to rest Aguero is further indication that Guardiola’s two main strikers are job sharing.

The midweek teamsheet in Napoli will provide new clues as to the intention for Gameweek 11, when Arsenal visit the Etihad Stadium. Depending on the teamsheet in Italy, Aguero could get the start against the Gunners, as he bids to finally break the club goal scoring record on home turf. That could see Jesus back on the bench. Maybe.

Pep’s rotation across his “five forwards” is clearly in full swing. There’s almost a system; almost a tantalising pattern forming.

Today Bernardo Silva started, while Raheem Sterling was omitted for a second successive Gameweek. However, this time it was Sterling who was the one of the five chosen for the now standard 30-minute cameo. He capitalised on that opportunity. Sterling’s goal – a seventh of the season – issued a reminder that he can work for us, even when handed limited pitch time.

But just three weeks ago, the idea of back-to-back bench roles for Sterling seemed improbable. He had started five successive league matches when available, with Pep smiling on the winger as his favoured “support striker” option.

Now Guardiola’s gaze appears to have shifted to Sane. The German has now started five successive league matches and seven of last eight in all competitions. In those five Gameweeks, he has supplied four goals and five assists and now sits on top of the overall FPL standings.

The case for Sane is strong, but is he really immune to his manager’s selection policy?

These continued attempts to break the code and work out Pep’s next shuffle is tiresome, but perhaps not as futile as the current market trend of moving from one City asset to the next.

Surely we have to commit, accept some frustration and hope we get value from our weapon of choice.

It’s highly debatable if that can be either Aguero or Jesus at this present time. However, one of Sterling or Sane, with Silva the less explosive but more dependable choice, looks the way to go.

Playing for higher stakes could pay off, but Guardiola’s game of roulette appears to be a major distraction for our transfer policy at a time when options like Eden Hazard are edging back into contention.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What to do with my team? Pretty poor GW so far, but I feel like changes are needed.

    Pope (Elliot)
    Alonso Otamendi Cedric (Ward Simpson)
    Salah Silva Richarlison Choupo-Moting (Carrick)
    Lacazette Jesus Vardy

    The team as it stands:

    Fabianski / Elliot
Davies Maguire Ward Duffy / Kola
    Salah D.Silva Ritchie
    Kane Morata Jesus

    1FT, 0 ITB..

Thinking maybe Kola ➡ Jones this week and then for next week I could take a hit or two to get Lukaku/Daniels/Richarlison/Sane in

Any suggestions will be much appreciated 🙂

I keep seeing Man City questions and thought this might be helpful. I wrote it 10 days ago and feel it is even more validated by the last game. Feel free to compliment/counter.

    Manchester City.

Have we seen a team like this in FPL? I've been playing a few years (admittedly only 'properly' in the last 2 or 3 seasons) and cannot remember anything like this current team. Yes we've seen strong teams smash bad teams reguarly, but for FPL purposes, there were always only a few viable options. Sturridge and Suarez; Kane, Alli and Eriksen etcetera. This City team is a lot different, in that no one is truly nailed and there are 5 or 6 fully viable candidates.

The general consensus is that we need to invest in City players, but which ones? Will we be able to safely captain them or be furious at a 15 min cameo at the end of the game?

Looking at the conundrum, it appears to me that the best option is to have Silva, Sterling and Sane in a team. They are the three cheapest, they have great fixtures and are really blowing teams out of the water. Jesus and Aguero are simply too expensive for reliability reasons. With a good enough bench, an FPL manager would be less frustrated at a benching than they would with Aguero/Jesus.

The money saved also allows a much heavier investment in other areas, for example Kane/Morata/Lukaku (not all 3!) without taking away too much investment from the wingbacks.

This isn't about 'cover' but about using the 3 City spots to their maxiumum efficiency. Of course it could all change, you can't have them all etc but I think offers an alternative that few are talking about.

slightly kneejerk reaction, although slightly fair - we all say this, then he has 15 points in 2 consecutive gws and he's priority target again - it's just the city merry-go-round

I'm investing in city mids as better value, bought in sterling for -4 last week and he was benched, benched again this week but still came in for a 7 pointer, also bought in Sane this week for -4, captained him too 🙂 , city rotation just an owner's risk with city players, but worth the risk at the moment with the goals they are scoring, just have to hold for a few weeks to get the returns, but yeah with value in mind I would go city mids rather than jesus/aguero

Worth keeping Jesus?, if not who to replace him with. Currently have Lukaku and Calvert-Lewin as my other strikers.

I've read every single word of the FFS articles and watched all the scoutcasts and yet I'm having a mare of a season.

    Who's to blame?

I personally think all the dinosaur FPL "pundits" have NOT embraced change and are stuck in the past endorsing tactics and strategies that have had their day.

We need new blood; not dated and unimaginative FPL thinking.

Just one example last week scout cast were advising getting rid of Kane before Liverpool.

Myself and alot of the other new breed elite captained him. End of.

That's exactly what is needed if we're to survive this season.

Only 1 person in the FFS mods league owns DDG, one of the highest scoring players in the league this year. That manager is winning the league.

There are two players who for some reason everyone is blind to: DDG and Sané.

People don't want 'new ideas'. They want to conform, minimise risk, get a green arrow this GW, and blame other people for their bad decisions.

Tempted... too many midweek matches though & potential for injuries. I'm sticking with Jesus till a Friday. Could cost me a good bit of TV the way the price rises may go for Jesus/Kun

This gw was all about riding the storm. Was obvious it was coming and the crude managers prepared. Damage limitation. Coming out unscathed and attacking the next gw, with brute force.

These are the Gameweeks which win your mine leagues, seperate top 1k from top 100. Only the tough survive.

Look at how poorly the ffs members league is doing. We need a revolution if we want a half decent rank. Too many stale ideas and cliches coming from the traditional FPL pundits.

The ffs league is doing fine. The 5-6 scouts have all played the game differently.

Regardless, what is the revolutionary thinking you're suggesting? Genuinely curious.

We need a "new breed" of FPL pundit.

One that doesn't keep spouting stone-age strategies that are no longer relevant in the modern FPL game.

Re-evaluating the cheap goalkeeper strategy for one.

I guess we could use a whole 'revolution' to move 1% more of an average FFS fpl tv into goalkeepers.

Why dont you do an article putting some similar thoughts together? (serious suggestion).

                  They're worth debating.
