Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 10 – Sunday

Two new managers go head-to-head, and it is Claude Puel’s Leicester City who emerge victorious in strangely familiar Foxes fashion. Meanwhile, Pascal Gross continues to build on his growing Fantasy reputation as Brighton and Southampton share the spoils at the Amex Stadium.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s matches…

Puel sweeps in with a new-ish broom

Claude Puel’s reign at Leicester City brought change and familiarity in equal measure.

The Frenchman handed Demarai Gray (5.3) a rare start on the right and the winger responded with his first league goal of the season in an eye-catching performance.

Defender Ben Chilwell (4.3) was an even more surprise inclusion. He was handed an advanced role on the opposite flank in the 4-2-3-1 to offer the potential for out-of-position returns should Puel persist with that particular experiment.

Regular left-back, Christian Fuchs, provided the assist for Gray’s goal.

The inclusion of Gray meant that Riyad Mahrez was handed the freedom of a new central support role. An assist for Jamie Vardy’s opening goal of the Puel era means the Algerian has a goal and three assists in three, and he also scored in the midweek EFL Cup win over Leeds.

For Vardy, it was his first strike since Gameweek 6, although he has netted in three of his last four home matches.

Sold by more than 106,000 Fantasy Premier League managers last week, the England international still resides in 14.4% of squads, but form is not particularly backed up by fixtures.

The Foxes travel to Stoke City and West Ham while entertaining Man City and Spurs over the next four Gameweeks, although the schedule (BUR new sot CRY) eases after that.

Vardy’s 8.6 price tag could also be an issue given the potential value on offer by Swansea’s Tammy Abraham over the next three Gameweeks. However, if he can build on Sunday’s strike, Vardy remains a solution for those who are shying away from three premium strikers.

Gray and Chilwell – particularly if the latter continues to be played out of position – will also need reassessing if Puel keeps faith in today’s line-up. His tactics and formation at Stoke will be fascinating in that respect.

In defence, Harry Maguire (5.1) rewarded a 7.3% ownership that has remained relatively loyal throughout a lean season with his third clean sheet of the campaign.

Puel is noted for the defensive solidity of his sides, so that could prompt further interest in the big centre-half and also the cheaper alternative that is right-back Danny Simpson (4.5) should Chillwell fail to cement his new midfield berth.

Everton treading water

David Unsworth’s first league match in charge meant changes in personnel, but another toothless performance ensued.

The caretaker manager’s biggest call was leaving Gylfi Sigurdsson on the bench as the 2.4% owned midfielder continued his fall from Fantasy royalty to bit-part player.

Sigurdsson had played 90 minutes in every match from Gameweek 3 onwards under Ronald Koeman but, ignored at the break when Unsworth made two changes and switched from 4-2-3-1 to a midfield diamond, he was limited to just 16 minutes as the visitors’ final substitute today.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin led the line, with Wayne Rooney behind him, but the young striker could not repeat his EFL Cup scoring exploits from midweek as the Toffees huffed and puffed to little effect.

Aaron Lennon and Kevin Mirallas were given a second run-out in a week under Unsworth, only to be subbed off at half-time, while the 4.3-priced full-back Jonjoe Kenny was afforded a second successive Gameweek start. Meanwhile, centre-half Michael Keane failed to make the squad having suffered an infection in his foot. Nikola Vlasic also missed out, with the winger thought to be still struggling with his own foot injury.

A new regime hasn’t altered the dire situation for Everton.

They still have a great run of fixtures, but a painful lack of form and confidence continues to ward off Fantasy interest.

Managers enjoy Gross profit

Another Pascal Gross assist – his third in as many matches – helped Brighton to a point against Southampton.

The midfielder now has five assists for the season, together with two goals, and he currently tops the chart for points per million value among FPL midfielders. He’s been involved in seven of Brighton’s ten goals this campaign.

Gross’ 16.2% ownership took home seven points from the Saints match-up courtesy of two bonus points – taking that particular tally to six.

Glenn Murray scored his third goal in two matches to continue his claims for a budget striker spot.

The veteran’s lack of minutes had been a considerable deterrent, but he’s leapt on the chance given him by the three-match ban for Tomer Hemed. However, Abraham is again a factor that will likely deflect interest in Murray as a cut-price striker solution for now.

Gross aside, Brighton assets are not heavily owned and their schedule offers a mixed bag to tempt investment.

The Seagulls do have a trip to Swansea City and visits from Stoke City and Crystal Palace to come over the next four Gameweeks, but Man United away comes in the middle of all that, and Liverpool and Spurs also await before Gameweek 17 is done.

Yoshida the fall guy

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino left 5.4% of FPL managers in the lurch by benching Maya Yoshida at the Amex, with Wesley Hoedt partnering Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence for the first time.

Investment is concentrated in the Saints backline – their four most-owned players are defenders and goalkeeper Fraser Forster – but the side have kept just four clean sheets thus far, and strong home matches with Burnley and Everton are offset by trips to Liverpool and Man City over the next four Gameweeks.

After that, the schedule continues to present a mix of the attractive and the tough through to New Year’s Eve, suggesting sales are on the way for many of their assets.

That could start with Yoshida. He’d played eight of nine matches before today and was joint-top for efforts inside the box among defenders, prompting 80,000+ to buy into him for the Brighton trip.

That was clearly not enough for Pellegrino to keep faith in the Japanese international and Fantasy managers will surely take a similar line now that his security of starts is in question once more.

Scoring goals remains Southampton’s issue – they have nine in ten matches – and two differentials combined to find the net against Brighton.

The 4.3%-owned Steven Davis finished from a James Ward-Prowse (0.6%) rebound.

It was the Northern Irishman’s second goal of the season – only Manolo Gabbiadini (three) has more.

I played my WC this last week and true to form, looking good on paper never translates to a successful 1st GW after a WC for me. Unlike quite a few people I've seen here in recent times, I don't mind that.

I've played FPL for 10 years and my methods have evolved when it came to the way in which I chose my WC teams. Annually, without fail, my WC team would bomb out and get me a glorious 30ish pointer. I doubt I've scored more than 40 on a 1st half season WC ever.

I know some who in this scenario end up chasing points and take -8s and 12s immediately after playing their WC, but thankfully I am not like that.

I always to try plan it out so that I can get to have the best possible squad with the right balance of form, fixtures and value over the next 8(or however many GWs suits you according to your plan) and I feel more people should try to do that.

If it so happens that you have a shocker of a 1st GW or 2 after the WC, that might just be your bad luck, but try to stick to the squad that you've put so much time and effort into planning.

Obviously there will be times when the unknown strikes, e.g. this past GW with Messrs. Kane and Aguero and when that does happen, you will just need to make sure that you have chosen a decent squad to account for that or have plans in place to counter said potential unknowns as much as you can.

We can't do much more than that at the end of the day. Have fun and enjoy re-choosing your squads. It is just a game at the end of the day. Albeit one that we obsess over. 🙂

Good post. I told myself I wouldn't hit the minuses after playing my WC a few weeks ago but I did just that, because after tinkering during the internationals I found a squad I was extremely happy with in the long term, and one that I knew I wouldn't be able to afford if I didn't make the move. Short term pain for long term gain is how I saw it. My squad is more or less a season keeper as far as I'm concerned - it may save me hours of my life!

Haha thought I'd get that response. If there was an edit button I'd have reworded that. Most are mainstays - I hope! But inevitably a few will be rotated depending on fixtures, injuries etc

I also played my WC this GW.
I took a massive punt in bringing Sanchez just for the Swansea game. I made sure I could bring back Kane and Lukaku with just a -4 in the next 2 GW. Sanchez didn't pay off.

The good side now is I've got nailed on 4th and 5th defenders who can cover Yoshida's no-shows; and my 5th midfielder will be Atsu.

The only issue I've got left is Okazaki but there's no rush and no need to take hits to get him out.

The Sanchez punt may not have come off but you never know with the big hitters. He is a match winner all by himself and realistically could return in these next big games.

Those 4th and 5th defenders will sure come in handy once teams start rotating and the blanks start coming in.

Yeah that's definitely how it seems, but thinking about it a bit more i thought Gray perhaps getting some starts out wide would let mahrez (and leicester) rediscover a run of form, and Lukaku has just looked so poor to me; sluggish, unisterested, indecisive and temperamental, and Firmino's tide seems to be shifting the other way. United fan btw.

I've been trying to convince myself that but as a United fan watching him week in week out it seems crazy that he's still taking up that spot in my team. He has a very low celing imo and might just be one of those 'don't mind if he does well but don't mind not having him moments',for example I wont be too upset either way if he bangs in hattricks for us every week

His body language on the pitch has never been great, he's not an all action, complete striker. But he will keep scoring week after week & probably ends up top scorer in FPL this year. If not top then definitely top 3 or top 5.

Wouldn't get rid of Lukaku. Body language isn't great, but it's about chances and converting them. Had the wind blown the other way, he could've got a brace v Spurs. With Pogba coming back + his nailedness, he's the best striker to own.

Important games midweek - Kane status + Spurs fullbacks for weekend should be a bit clearer. Also city's next round of rotations.

I could see Sané treble rising then him being benched for Arsenal, and Jesus double falling then starting & scoring.

Not convinced by Stoke's fixtures at all, the season ticker is a great planning tool, but like the scout picks, needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, particularly over a 10 game horizon. I would describe their next 7 fixtures as average

So, worth WC this team in gw12(during international break)

    Forster Elliot
    Valencia Bertrand kolasinac wimmer mee
    Sterling salah Ritchie Sanchez Carroll
    Jesus firmino joselu

    Reasons you wC:
    - remove saints/Newcastle players as fix turn
    - drop Sanchez in favor of Kane
    - Valencia is overvalued..shift to jones for united double home fixtures
    - wimmer has game time risk
    - mee has a price drop soon if he doesn't score

    Reasons against WC:
So all in all, will take out about 7/8players but most the transfers are luxury transfers and can be resolved easily over a few weeks

After the Kane news on Friday, I opted to take Morata over Kane on my WC anticipating a Kane drop which would allow me to get him back. Thankfully I got 5 from Morata which beats what 1st and 2nd subs Duffy and Ayew would've given me.

If Kane is fit for this weekend should I stick to the plan and get him back in immediately or is there a something else I should change?

I see where you're coming from, Holmes. Things aren't as elementary as they may seem though. 😉

Puns aside, I want to give Aguero an extended run in my side just to see how things go. If after a few weeks it doesn't work, I'll switch to Morata if he's still on form. Chelsea's fixtures stay good for a long time and it gives me time to really let Chelsea find their form again before committing to one of them.

So I think I will do Xhaka and Vardy --> Richarlison and Tammy this week for a hit.

I was thinking of doing it next week for free, however, I'll have two Southampton defensive players (Forster and Cedric) that I'll need to move on by then.

    Thoughts?

    My current team is:

    Elliot / Forster
    Cedric / Maguire / Jones / Naughton / Mbemba
    Salah / Sterling / Silva / Xhaka / Carroll
    Kane / Lukaku / Vardy

        No, unfortunately.

I can only do Maguire (5.1) to a 4.4. Cedric would need to go down to a 4.3 and I'm not convinced by those on offer.

Don't like it for a hit. Really don't see why Vardy can't bag versus that Stoke team, whch makes it hard to cover the points.

Richarlison will definitely outscore Xhaka and Jones in my opinion, that's what makes it worthwhile. As I said, I'd still need to transfer out my Southampton defensive assets next week.

from my 1 year of experience, my verdict on making transfers is the following:

    1. NEVER take hits (unless to field 11)
    2. save a transfer every other week (make 2 FTs every other week)
    3. FHC for blanks only
    4. Don't bother with price rises. Always do your 2 transfers the day before the GW.

not sure about this manifesto. definitely, think hits can be beneficial to your gameweek score and medium-term planning.

I agree, although I usually go overboard to my early season detriment I've taken some very useful hits this season. E.g. Mkhi to Sterling for his 15 pointer and Coutinho to Sane for his 12 pointer

        1. Francescoli
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 7 months ago

In the past when price rises occurred more frequently, it made sense to take hits to get on the bandwagon of the day. However, hits hurt a lot more now that TV has (almost) been taken out of the equation.

Still, there are times where a hit is useful. I also caught that Sterling 15 pointer for a hit...

            3 and 4 I agree with.

1 and 2 I strongly disagree with. Hits at the right time are crucial to success in this game. It shouldn't be thought of a one GW cost - it should be considered often as a longer term move that costs 4 points now.

      Agree with 2,3 & 4

1 is up for debate if you think a player is going to smash it then it makes sense to take a hit. It can pay off big time

      • 7 Years

Before GW1 I was planning to avoid taking hits just to catch price changes the way I did last season.
Unfortunately, even if I had it planned well and not just short term, issues like Kane in August, KDB playing too deep and Zaha's injury, had me running around pointlessly like Adama Traore last year, with ML rivals getting points from anywhere possible. I've done bad so far, so now I'm back to my last season self, caring more about building team value and getting the players I want.
It's been very disappointing so far, seems like I can never catch a break.

i ve been avoiding hits this season after a hit-fuelled season last year. This week i took a -4 to bring in Sane and gave him the armband.

in my few years of experience i would say that any list of golden rules should be treated with a pinch of salt. Relative success in this game is largely due to optimum reaction to the circumstances around your own team. Often, breaking such golden rules is the right thing to do.

    8. Punty McPuntface

I get where you are coming from, however this season I have...

      1 made transfers weekly
2 made transfers on the Saturday night usually
3 caught as many price rises as possible
4 taken hits regularly (Only -4)
5 kept an eye on my competitors in ml

      Currently I'm 1st, 2nd and 5th in my MLs

Respectfully, for me, it's all about playing your game and your risk appetite

What's your OR & TV with this strategy? I'm usually quite liberal with hits in the first half of the season, and it's worked out well a few times so far (though Sterling/Kane for Richarlison/Laca keeping RLC benched was a massive fail this week). Be interested to see if the conservative approach is proving more beneficial.

We're heading into the stage of the season when squads start getting pushed to their limits with the domestic and continental cups along with the strenuous festive season schedule. This will give rise to rest and rotation.

You're gonna need at least 2 playing subs soon, preferably all 3.
