The ScoutCast – Episode 238 – Spooked

Whether it’s Pep’s rotation, Jonty’s runaway facial hair or a rogue horse in Andy’s front garden, the ScoutCast crew are decidedly spooked in this week’s Halloween episode.

Downed by a bout of Labyrinthitis – which is as nasty as it sounds – I’m forced to duck out as Jonty, Andy, Granville and Az run riot.

Your community questions help to keep them in check, forcing the quartet to once again assess City rotation, while giving views on Chelsea’s big-hitters, a Foxes revival and a slew of budget defenders.

Jonty rolls out his “ghouls imminent” table, while Andy unknowingly mocks my affliction from afar with back-to-back ear puns; in between they preview the weekend’s action to reveal their captain and transfer picks.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

For those having Mbemba + having or getting in Daniels.. you can have TAA and Gomez (playing pool def no matter what - might even have two occasionally) for the exact same price.. food for thought imo

Pool defence not very good away. 2 pool spots in defence could hurt in the future.
I also think you should have nailed players on your bench.

Not the worst idea but there's better options

Everton got fixtures against watford, cpl, huddersfield, swansea among others all coming up.

Hot take: I reckon Everton will get back on track in no time and Rooney will be a good option once more.

Watford and Swans are not push overs and Everton playing worse than Palace and Huddersfield at the moment.

When your in rubbish form and devoid of confidence there really are no easy games in the premier league. The 'best of the rest' league outside the top 6 is pretty even imo, look at the bottom three....Palace are not a shambles any more and Bournemouth are certainly not an easy team to play. Everton need to sort their s*** out quick smart

Most of Arsenal's defenders are goal hangers. Don't be surprised if City get 6 and Mertesacker wakes up pregnant.

Looking for a better draft league format than that other one that was ill conceived?

The Knocks & Niggles Mayhem draft league is recruiting new members for a December 2nd draft as posted in community articles.

52 out of 60 managers returned for year 5 of this Fantrax league.

Why do people always talk about hits only being profitable if they outscore the player you have replaced by more than 4pts that GW? Surely the profitability has to be calculated over the entire time you own that player. For example if you take a hit to replace Carroll with RLC and you sell RLC 10 GWs later but in that period he has outscored Carroll by 6pts then you have made a profit of 2pts.

    Am I missing something?

    1. GuyIncognito
      • 14 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

Because people are way too focused on getting massive gw ranks and don't look at the overall score over the course of many weeks. It's a big blind spot in the community.

You see it all the time in DGWs where a lot of players gut their teams and bring in punts.

      1. BananaNose Maldonado
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 9 Years

That's fair. But there is also a reason why most of the people who are consistently at the top of the rankings are hit averse.

Yes. You are missing that there is a chance you could have just made the move for free if you had waited a week or two and you didn't have any other moves to make. So it's possible the -4 wasn't needed.

    3. Pep says
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

      Yes and no.

One way to look at it (and just one way) is if I do VVD to Jones for a hit this week.

VVD gets 6, Jones gets 2

      I'm 8pts down.

There is no doubt that Jones over the rest of the season will outscore VVD but my hit still wasn't worth it.

      1. FPLzebub
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 11 Years

In your example you are actually only 4pts down (6 - 2). That just means you made the transfer too early. If over the period you own Jones he outscores VVD by more than 4pts the hit is still profitable.

Making a transfer 'for free' isn't actually free. It still costs you a transfer. It's only free if you would have burned that transfer and how often do you do that?

This is only partly true. Yes, there are opportunity costs with any transfer, but it's still possible that a week or two later the best move would have been the one you already made - and now you could make it without the hit.

It's simple logic, really: if you really think that just transferring in players you THINK will score more than a current player over the course of the rest of the season is worth the hit, then do that for every player every week. I bet you come up with about 8 transfers you could make each week. Enjoy those -28s, and tell me how that works out 🙂

I didn't say over the course of the season I said over the period in which you own him. Also i'm not advocating taking loads of hits. I'm just trying to clarify how you calculate whether they were profitable or not.

No because VVD outscore Jones by 4 and I took a -4 to get Jones so there's an 8pt swing. I'll get him on a free next week. It's a transfer used yes but it's my best value transfer in the long run I feel

It's a short term view yes but surely it's plausible to look at it both ways. If RLC scores 2 the week you've bought him in for a hit whilst you just lost Carroll and he scored 6... it's one of those just incase things

This makes sense only when the player is explosive and you want to captain because they can cover hits the same GW

No. Surely the correct formula is: Bought player's pts until you sell him - Sold player's pts over the same period + 4. If he result is positive the hit was profitable.

But if you could predict, with 100% accuracy, the future returns of each player, you'd win FPL every season. The uncertainty is what makes the hits risky. I mean, I brought in Sanchez and Laca last week - looked like a slam dunk, and it wasn't.

So, yes, IF the player you brought in outscores the player you took out for him by more than four points over the course of owning him, then it will be worth it. But that's impossibke to guarantee, and you've taken on risk (points hits) in hopes that you get it right.

I don't disagree with your first paragraph and the 2nd is exactly what I said.

Yeah, if you take this approach, where do you draw the line? Every single move can be justified as profitable.in the long term when you are actually making the transfer. Doesn't warrant you taking -4 after -4.

Who's to say, you take a -4 for a RLC, and then two weeks later have enough cash in the bank to upgrade RLC to Gross, because you think Gross will eventually outscore RLC. You would then have been better off waiting and just getting Gross.

Your approach is is sensible in a draft kinda game where there are limited to no transfers for a long time, but in a game where every player can be replaced, it's very likely you'll make mistakes getting caught up in this hit being profitable in the long term business.

Again there seems to be some confusion. I'm not saying we should take more hits only how to calculate whether they were profitable or not. In your example if you take a -4 to bring in RLC and 2 GWs later sell him for Gross he will have needed to have scored 4 pts more than the player you took out in those 2 weeks to break even.

Yeah, but then it's a -8 right vs the original player assuming you are only taking hits to get rid of fringe players/ players with a low points ceiling. RLC outscoring a cheap mid by 8 points in 2 weeks is very optimistic. You may think it is very likely, but there is no guarantee of a return, yet you are taking a guaranteed deduction of points.

If, however, you are using free transfers on these players, then you are also not maximizing the value of transfers. Sure, it is possible you come out ahead by a point or two, but you are better off using it elsewhere.

Basically, you need to be certain (and you can't) that your point deductions will pay off until your next move else you are giving away hard earned points.

Whether or not a particular hit is successful or not has no relevance to what I was saying. I have no opinion on whether anybody should take more or fewer hits. My only point is the method by which you should calculate whether the hit has made a profit or a loss which is:

Bought player's pts until you sell him - Sold player's pts over the same period + 4. If the result is positive the hit was profitable, if negative unprofitable, if zero break even.

Still baffled by the fact that Spurs managed to hammer Madrid without Alderweireld and with Shitssoko on the field (which is basically like playing with 10)

No United defence has hurt me since i sold Valencia. They seem essential with 8/10 clean sheets.
Maybe bring in Jones for a 4.5 def or Save FT?

    1 FT, 1.1 ITB

    Foster Elliot
    Otamendi Mee Lascalles Naughton Simpson
    Salah Sterling Groß RLC TC
    Kane Kaku Jesus

    Cheers
