Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Kane Strike Not Enough

A goal from their talisman fails to drag Spurs from their slump as Leicester City inflict a third defeat in five matches on Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Harry Kane’s seventh goal in as many away matches this season was, on the face of it, the sign of a good night’s work at Leicester City.

The strike was certainly a relief for the 17.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers, that’s close to a million, who captained him.

But they could have been excused for expecting more – his six-point return at the King Power Stadium was the first time this season he’s failed to earn bonus when on the scoresheet.

And then there’s the issue of Spurs themselves. How long can a misfiring side keep relying on Kane to bail them out, particularly when he has struggled to make an impact at home all season?

The 2-1 defeat last night was their third straight match without a win, and their third loss in five, with perhaps the only positive on the night the return from long-term injury of Erik Lamela (6.3), who was handed 13 minutes from the bench and still found the time to set up Kane’s goal.

However, from a Fantasy perspective, his return to contention only clouds the issue in the Spurs midfield, handing Pochettino more options to rotate.

Not that we have interest in that Spurs midfield right now.

Christian Eriksen missed a glorious chance to score his first goal since Gameweek 8 and continues to leak owners as a result. He lost 166,000+ in the lead up to last night, and a further 12,000+ since have made him the third most sold player heading into Gameweek 15.

Pochettino can’t even offer us defensive solidity to fall back on at the moment. They’ve kept just one clean sheet in six matches and the rotation issues surrounding their wing-backs – Serge Aurier and Danny Rose were given the nod last night – have further dented managers’ confidence in Ben Davies.

The Welsh international has lost owners in five of the last six Gameweeks and is already exceeding Eriksen’s sales going into the weekend trip to Watford.

That match precedes a Champions League dead rubber in which Pochettino will surely rest key assets, so Davies and Kieran Trippier could well play at both Watford and in Gameweek 16’s Wembley visit from Stoke City.

But despite a fine short-term schedule (wat STK BHA), investment in any of Spurs’ stars is an increasingly fraught affair at present.

Foxes back in focus

New Leicester manager Claude Puel has described his side as a work in progress, and that progress was there for all to see against Spurs.

Jamie Vardy’s goal was a huge relief for his 13.9% ownership, although more than 133,000 managers have jumped ship over the past six Gameweeks, with the England man having found the net just twice in his last eight starts.

The form of Riyad Mahrez is considerably more encouraging.

His winner last night was his third goal of the season, and all have come since Gameweek 8. During the same period, he’s also provided three of his six assists for the campaign.

Owned by just 4.2%, the midfielder could prove to be an excellent pre-Christmas differential as the Foxes prepare for a promising quartet of matches (BUR new sou CRY) up next.

However, Demarai Gray’s stock – previously buoyant under Puel when he started the last four – took a dent following last night’s encounter. The 5.3 midfield option was benched for the first by his manager, with Shinji Okazaki returning to the starting line-up.

At the back, things remain patchy. Leicester have kept a very unPuel-like one clean sheet in seven, but those short-term fixtures could help improve that.

Christian Fuchs missed out for the Foxes due to the birth of his daughter on Tuesday afternoon, while striker Kelechi Iheanacho was also absent through illness but is expected back in the squad for Gameweek 14.

Accidentally posted in a reply. Any Sané owners considering the Sterling switch to bank a cheeky 0.9? Seems like they'll score at a similar pace

Kane is increasingly becoming a 12.5+ striker you can’t rely on to captain, which is ridiculous.

Really tempted to sculpt my team into a rogue 4-5-1/4-4-2 over the next couple of weeks. Something like:

    Elliot/Ryan

    Azpilicueta/Otamendi/Ward/Daniels/Kiko

    RLC/Sane/Salah/Hazard/Sanchez

    Morata/Niasse/Crouch

Morata is the only big gun striker who looks relatively nailed and has form and fixtures.

I can get the frustration. One look at gw4-Gw9 shows the destruction he can do. That was pre injury and is maybe still building back up from it.

I’m not a stat guy as such but 6 shots last ni, ok 1 on target. Can see him hauling quite nicely over the next period and the more sellers the better.

Kane is a keeper, basically scores every week even in a bad patch, highest points for a striker currently, and 3rd overall in fpl standings, expensive but what are the alternatives, already have Morata, Kaku not scoring, Aguero/Jesus not nailed

Has anybody ever done any research into how accurately the Rate My Team feature has performed against the eventual reality over any period of time?

I'd be interested to see how it stacks up. It often throws up some quite surprising forecasts some of which I've followed against my original judgement, and others I've simply had to take with a pinch of salt.

I know it isn't a crystal ball and is another means of helping you make the best call based on past evidence etc. But knowing how it has panned out over the years would help me weight that advice against other sources.

    cheers in advance

despite my interest in these sorts of things I will freely admit to be quite terrible at this sort of thing, crunching numbers, analysis, hell, even fairly rudimentary math. I'm just curious. If no ones looked at it or they're not interested in sharing then frankly it'll remain one of life's mysteries to me.

January. Plenty of games in December to make him worthwhile

I'm not 100% sure what hearings Injury was but did he have a shoulder recon? I feel like Pope is doing well enough for Heaton to have the rest of the year off or at least not rush him back

Anyone tempted to double up on Chelsea defence? Got Alonso but thinking Courtois. It’s does mean only having 1 of Hazard or Morata. Thoughts?

I guess there are a lot of Elliot/Speroni owners out there. Is taking a hit for a new goalkeeper when you are guaranteed zero points from your non-starters is probably the only time in which a -4 is always justified, right?

2FT and not sure what to do

    DDG/Elliot

    Dann/Daniels/Mee/Azpi/Duffy
    Salah/Sane/Sterling/Rich/RLC
    Kane/Morata/Abraham

My only concern is not owning Hazard but can't see how to squeeze him in?

Could someone please tell me I'm an idiot to be contemplating this as I'm finding it very hard not to...

    I have 1.1 ITB

    Tom Carroll + Kane > Salah + Firmino/Vardy

In all seriousness in my head I'm thinking captain Hazard/Salah most weeks because come the end of the season they can both easily outpoint Kane the way Tottenham are going (just to make it clear I don't think Kane is the problem at all but Spurs are not consistent enough at this present moment)

To me from a points perspective Salah + Firmino/Vardy outpoints Kane and Carroll 10 times out of 10 come the end of the season if you pick Hazard/Salah as captain

HOWEVER, the frustrating thing in all this is the Kane fear factor... simply because it's Harry Kane it feels wrong to remove him from your team.

Yet logic in my head tells me that points wise the LFC duo trumps Kane and Carroll

Really would love to hear some of your thoughts

Salah + Vardy/Firmino will probably outscore Kane + Mr 2 pointer, but Ideally you should have Kane and Salah.

I completely agree... however I'm in a position where I have to sacrifice Sane to get Salah... where as I could have a team of

        Pope
        Alonso Otamendi Ward
        Hazard Sane Sterling Salah
        Morata Firmino Wilson

        Elliott Ward RLC Zanka

That midfield just screams points to me
