Scout Report – Cenk Tosun

After failing to adequately replace Romelu Lukaku last summer, Everton wasted little time in bringing in a forward in the January transfer window, signing Cenk Tosun from Turkish side Besiktas for a reported fee of around £25 million.

On sealing the deal, manager Sam Allardyce was very clear that he feels the club have pulled off a major coup.

“He is Turkey’s number one striker and has scored goals in the Champions League and the Turkish League. I don’t think you can look any more than we have done and, for the price, this is the best in Europe at the moment.”

The History

Born in Germany, Tosun linked up with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1997 at the age of six and progressed to make his professional debut in May 2010.

But the frontman failed to make the grade in Germany as a youngster and joined Turkish outfit Gaziantepspor in January 2011.

He made an immediate impact, registering 10 goals and six assists in 14 league appearances.

Tosun stayed with Gaziantepspor until February 2014, finishing with 44 goals and 23 assists from 144 matches in all competitions.

The striker then joined Besiktas on a five-year deal worth nearly €500,000. He initially found it difficult to break into the starting XI, with big-name forwards Demba Ba and Mario Gomez ahead of him in the pecking order.

But Tosun became a regular at the start of the 2016/17 campaign and has produced 28 goals and five assists in 49 league appearances over the last 18 months.

The 26-year-old has also gained valuable UEFA Champions League experience, producing four goals and two assists in six matches this season as Besiktas secured a place in the last 16.

Tosun represented Germany at youth level before pledging his allegiance to Turkey.

He made his senior debut against Holland in October 2013 and has made 25 appearances for his country, totalling eight goals and three assists.

The Prospects

The 26-year-old boasts several attributes that should enable him to make an impact in the Premier League.

Standing six feet tall, Tosun offers a sound aerial threat and has the strength to hold off defenders, bringing team-mates into play. Indeed, Tosun highlighted this quality in his first interview with the club.

“The Premier League is a strong league, I know that, so my own physical strength will help me. Also I can use both feet the same and I believe I am a good striker in the box.”

But Tosun’s ability to take on defenders highlights that he is far from the stereotypical target man normally associated with Allardyce’s teams.

Indeed, the Everton boss was quick to highlight the new signing’s versatility.

“He is an all-rounder, with good movement. He is two-footed, not the biggest but efficient in the air and in the box – he gets good space to get his head on the ball. “

The striker’s mobility allows him to elude his markers and he’ll often drop deep or drift to wide areas to create space for team-mates; that could benefit Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The underlying statistics offer further indication that he provides a major upgrade in attack for the Toffees.

This season, the Tosun has fired 63% of his shots from inside the penalty area, with an effort every 22.6 minutes in league action and every 29.9 in Europe.

Oumar Niasse leads the way for Everton so far in the campaign, averaging a goal attempt every 28.6 minutes, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin (41.2) is even less impressive in that regard.

Between the pair, they have managed just eight league goals.

But one concern regarding Tosun’s prospects is whether he can wrestle penalty duties from Rooney.

Nine of his 28 league goals over the last 18 months have come from the spot, so losing penalties would have an impact on his output.

However, it’s worth noting he has an exceptional record when it comes to penalties and has scored 24 of 25 attempts over the course of his career.

If he usurps Rooney in the pecking order, that would in turn dent the veteran’s future tallies. Despite being stationed in a withdrawn role, Rooney has still managed 5.2 points per match, level with Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, for example.

Bearing in mind that Allardyce favours a lone striker set-up, Tosun’s arrival will surely limit Calvert-Lewin’s pitch-time.

Having started nine of the last 10 Gameweeks, the 20-year-old has risen in price from 5.0 to 5.5 in recent weeks and boasts a 12% ownership in FPL. However, he now looks far more likely to earn minutes off the bench from here on.

Given that Rooney started the season valued at 7.5 and classified as a forward, Tosun looks set to come in at that price point.

Rooney aside, managers have been starved of compelling options in that bracket and should Tosun show early form, we can expect immediate interest, with Firmino and Alvaro Morata owners considering the swap.

Although Everton are without a win in their last four, the upturn in form since Allardyce’s appointment at Goodison Park suggests that Tosun could deliver.

A trip to Wembley is up next for the Toffees and that match-up should provide Fantasy managers with an early insight as to what we can expect.

The schedule after that (WBA LEI ars CRY wat bur BHA stk) is kind all the way up to Gameweek 31, increasing the chances of Tosun becoming a viable mid-price option.

But Everton’s goal threat since Allardyce took charge is worrying.

Over his eight Gameweeks as manager, the Toffees sit in the bottom two for shots (58), efforts in the box (39), attempts on target (21) and big chances (eight).

Everton’s ability to create chances will surely need to improve if Tosun is to be given the opportunities to impress and figure in our 2018 plans.

For those who don’t want to click:

Sunday Mirror’s evidence also revealed that the Liverpool striker shouted at Holgate the Portuguese phrase ‘Es maluco, filho da puta?”, which translates as “Are you crazy, you son of a b***h?”

So like I said yesterday before someone on here got abusive, he said ‘puta’ and nothing else. Holgate could be in deep s**t.

Yeah I dunno if it's that clear cut, we'll have to wait and see if anything picked up what they said. Can't be all of it. It doesn't help that the words 'negrito' and 'negão' are joke slang names in Latin America used like 'bro' or 'mate'.

I'm not sure if Salah can function as an actual centre forward back to goal. It's gotta be something like that though you would think.

It´s a matter of testing. Klopp has to do experiments. But I think Salah can do well as "Vardy like". He is super fast, very mobile and has goal, he can explore the other defence back in speed with Mahrez passing, it can work! Wait and see.

I agree. Coutinho is a great player and importante but I think they will do ok. I think it looks pretty good to this team and Milner, Wijnaldum, Lallana, Solanke and Sturridge as backups. Hope Clyne returns soon too.

Wijnaldum should not be anywhere near any team competing for a top 10...
Lallana is well ahead of Hendo, and Can is leaving in the summer.
        Also Keita coming in.

A team can´t have 18 elite players so it´s normal to have that kind of players in bench, I don´t think Wijnaldum is that bad, he has quality and has a backup is good. Lallana and Hendo play different roles and positions and Hendo is one of the captains. Can is leaving yes but we are talking in the present.

If you can, take a look at Wijnaldum's stats. His offence is terrible, and his defence is terrible. Genuinely don't know what he does for the team. But yes Lallana is supposed to be more advanced and we need to figure out Liverpool from now until summer.

His stats are poor, yes. But he has physique for the shock and it´s strong in progressing with ball at speed, he can be useful.

Lallana can be a good backup to the front options.

I think that Klopp can go this way I said but let´s wait and see to confirm.

I don't see why Klopp would change the formation. Coutinho was an important player for them but they have able replacements in Mane and Lallana.

I don´t see Mahrez playing any other way except right wing so I think Salah can be used as forward to coexist with both. I don´t see Lallana as a legit replacement for Coutinho and Mané is a different player.

But why are we assuming that Mahrez would be nailed on? Nothing wrong with a front three of Salah, Firmino and Mane.

I think he will be nailed on but it´s just a personal opinion and feeling, of course.

But you said to times Salah, it would be awesome to have two but he his just one, haha. That´s what I said, two in the wings and Firmino with Salah through the middle.

Mahrez, Mane, Chamberlain, Salah etc all effectively wide players who like to beat players with pace or trickery ...

    Ok bear with me here.

I can scrape this team together. It’s a bit different and a bit of a punt because I need some differentials. Looking at my team it’s good but very template and won’t close the 90pt gap in my ML.

So. If you could, would you?

    Darlow (Elliot)
    Stones Alonso VVD (Ogbonna Tuanzebe)
    Lingard Sterling Salah Milivojevic (King)
    Kane Aguero Firmino

My current team looks nice but you’ve all seen it before. The stapleas above but without Aguero and with Mahrez, Ota etc.

Any fair comment warmly received. Cheers guys.

If you try to go too differential it's just sheer luck. You still have to go with the players you think will score the best or you will just go down and down. Trust me, I've been there. Captains can make up a lot of points, and I know you've said your rival won't slip up but injuries and doubles still lead to a lot of luck and strategy that can gain 90 points. I wouldn't be happy with a perma-Newcastle keeper. I think you're better off keeper that WC in your pocket. Also I don't like the heavy frontline. I understand people's appeal, but it's just a horribly inefficient distribution of funds; the value is in midfield and a select few defenders, but your defence looks good.

This is an excellent team. Not really differential, plenty of well owned players there.

Why not consider 433 and getting a better 4th defender? Very nice.

    Alonso - Christensen - Otamendi
    KDB - Sterling - Salah - Lingard - RLC
    Kane - Morata

Sub : DCL, Mariappa, Rosenior | Speroni

0.0 ITB and the bench looks so horrible now.

My plan was to do DCL -> Quaner and use the fund to change one of Mariappa / Rosenior -> playing DF (4.6/4.7m) on the next GW. That plan looks uncertain now that Quaner being flagged by his hamstring. Any advice for how to relocate fund for better bench please.

Would you prefer Pope (CRY) or Adrian (HUD) for next gw?
Due to injury I’m forced to play both Mee and Ogbonna also, so whichever goalie I choose, I’ll have double defence from that team.

Went from 524k to 94k since dropping him prior to his two hat tricks. It was possible to be successful without him when Cout, Firm, Salah were all healthy and delivering. With so many questions around the league right now, I feel I may need to get him back.

are enough we should spend the money wisely I personally would love Lemar but can't see AS Monaco selling mid way through the season the manager Leo Hatching even came out and said it himself long story short although he would be a great addition to our squad he's not the answer we need a CAM someone who creats attacking play.

Money is not an issue you need 2 strong options at every position to compete successfully on all fronts which is over 60 games. Lemar is ideal to rotate with Mane and Salah otherwise the dropoff is too much to the Lallana's and Oxcart's of the world. Keita will be the new CAM come summer and solidify that spot.

      1. Lecky Legs FC
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

I agree Keita is replacing Coutinho but i say we need another CAM now we can't wait till the summer for Keita as it will jeopardize our chances to qualify for CL if we don't, I believe Ox will fill Coutinho's role temporarily until Naby's arrival but personally I'd rather we go get another quality CAM fast.

Me too think they'll keep trying to get Keita in early but teams don't want to sell now and Klopp doesn't want stopgraps. Think we'll be alright with Ox, Gino and Lallana filling in there for now. Need to pray the fab 3 stay fit tho

I honestly don't see RB Leipzig letting us have him early thier competing with Monchengladbach,Dortmund,Bayer Leverkusen & Schalke in Bundesliga for CL spots and still in Europa think we are shooting ourselves in the foot if we don't bring a quality player to join the fab 3 as injuries and rotation will occur in our squad.

I think Burnley will start to keep less clean sheets. I am banking on De Gea getting more points over Pope than a 5th choice defender gets in games he plays vs having no 3rd sub. I guess that is the dilemma.

Is he? I mean FPL defensive coverage is a thing, if Otamendi will get a CS then Stones will too so it's not a "big downgrade" at all. Also, he is attacking potential is not bad too, scoring 3 goals in CL.

If he has as much game time and scores as many goals and is cheaper he is the best option (regardless of quality). Pep likes Stones. I think he plays.
