Dugout Discussion – Man City vs Chelsea

After Brighton claimed a vital win over Arsenal at the Amex Stadium, Sunday’s second and final fixture sees Manchester City entertain Chelsea in the 4pm kick-off.

The league leaders boast two of the top six captain picks for Gameweek 29 in Sergio Aguero (6.8%) and Kevin De Bruyne (2.5%).

Over their last four home matches, Aguero has nine goals and 50 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while De Bruyne has three sets of double-digits and 45 points.

Leroy Sane’s goal and assist at the Emirates on Thursday evening has had a significant impact on the FPL transfer market. The most bought player (235,000+) for Gameweek 29, the German international goes in search of a sixth 10+ points haul in front of his own fans.

Meanwhile, sales of Raheem Sterling look set to escalate as he misses out again. The most sold player in each of the last two Gameweeks, he was transferred out by a hefty 746,000+ during that period.

For the visitors, Eden Hazard arrives on the back of fine recent away output – he’s racked up 40 points in his previous four on the road, thanks to four goals and an assist.

The Belgian looks set to start as a “false 9” today, with Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud named among the Chelsea subs.

Both Pedro and Willian start alongside Hazard, with the Brazilian, in particular, boasting fine form. Willian was bought by over 95,000 FPL managers for Gameweek 29, with last week’s opener at Old Trafford taking his tally to four strikes in the last three matches across all competitions.

If Conte plays Hazard as a 9 again in the reverse fixture at Barca that will be the last straw for me.
It's already at the point where I think he should go at the end of the season, but that would just ruin the rest of this season.
    So many stupid decisions lately.

And look at them now. Success in one year doesn't mean he should stay forever. He clearly has zero relationship with the owner or board. He's losing interest from the players. He's making poor decision after poor decision. He's clearly frustrating Hazard, who we need to stay at the club.
The club started this crap in the summer, but he acts like he wants to get fired now. It's crap to watch.

I watched everyone walking around today like zombies, one of the most boring periods of football I've ever seen, 1-0 down, every single counter attacking chance we had was blundered by Pedro's inability to pass, so he withdraws Willian...
Same as last week where Pedro was poor and he took off Hazard. He's not getting anything out of Bakayoko or Morata, sent Luiz into another dimension, and for months has been playing Hazard as a 9 when he clearly doesn't like it and they end up with no attacking threat every time.

Why is Conte at fault for Hazard walking around the pitch? . Hazard was like a mardy little brat who couldn't get his own way and everyone who was walking should be fined a weeks wages. Didn't Hazard do same with Jose? Poor attitude that lad

He's not been backed by your board at all. The players and the board should be getting abuse. Fact is you have best tactical manager around but he's not been offered the resources and was forced to panic buy. I agree Pedro is crap and Willian should start. You know more than me about Chelsea I'm sure but Conte doesn't deserve the dogs abuse

I do hope you sack him. I'm an Italian national team fan and id love him back.

Hazard wanted to drop deep and play on the ball and start the attacks, he was restricted to nothingness out there. Wouldn't you be frustrated if you felt useless and couldn't do anything about it? He was played in proper position in proper formation for about 5 minutes of that game, and those 5 minutes looked better than any other portion of the game. But it was Willian he took off instead of Pedro, and Pedro ruined the few chances we had.

            I agree mostly.

I'm an Italy supporter as well, so it's 50/50 for me where he goes.

Kante missing was a huge blow for you. Maybe the way he set up was damage limitation. Agree they were poor today and killed the game. I can't get my head round the Pedro love though. He's not even close to Willian is he

Not going to be a great summer for us both then haha

                Sad summer indeed.

I didn't really consider Kante. The game would have been much different with him. But I feel it would have just been a straight swap for Fabregas and we still would have been limited to this 3 shots per game crap.

Chelsea don't need more resources IMO. Look at their squad:

            GK: Courtois, Caballero
CB: Rudiger, Luiz, Azpi, Christensen, Zouma (get back from loan)
            LB: Alonso, Emerson
            RB: Moses, Zappacosta
            CM: Drinkwater, Fabregas, Kante, Bakayoko
            LM: Hazard, Pedro
            RM: Willian, Barkley
FW: Morata, Giroud, Batshuayi (get back from loan)

That excludes some good players who are on loan and aren't being developed. Personally think Conte has made mistakes in transfers - getting rid of Costa and Matic for example. He lacks flexibility with personalities - if he doesn't like you then you are gone. The best football Chelsea played was against Brighton with Willian, Hazard and Batshuayi as the front three. Batshuayi played well in the next game against Newcastle too. But Conte still shipped him off.

See that's not the right argument. Conte has had nothing to do with transfers, if we are to believe the media. All of that crap is on the club, and it's been terrible.
Conte is only liable for the decisions made after that: attitude, formation, selection, subs.

Zappacosta is poor every which way. Mistimed tackles , terrible positional sense and very poor going forward . Moses is way better.

Moses is definitely better than Zappa. Lord knows what's happened to Luiz, but Christensen has made quite a few errors recently. I agree with the rest and the formation. Need to get Morata back up to speed, he really should be ahead of Giroud, he's just not right now.

That’s not necessarily a tactical fault more of an application.

The Barca game had the front 3 pressing, they definitely did not in this game.

You can’t compare last season to this season, no distractions. Can’t believe managers don’t get more time when the circumstances change so massively.

I don't necessarily care for comparing this season to last. Is it too much to ask for a decent relationship between club, manager, and players?

If that’s the case then you are unfortunately supporting the wrong club.

You don’t care for comparing the man that brought you a title after the dominance of the Manchester clubs, only to want to bin him off for a performance that is admittedly not acceptable, but in reality makes sense when compared to how other teams have performed at the Ethiad?

That paragraph could have been used for not just your current manager either.

Ha, seems like it. But that's the thing about football, after 17 years of support I can't just switch now, can I...

I didn't expect much of a result against City, they are clearly better. It's the way it happened. The poor decisions that have already proven not to work.

Could still beat Barca and win cup and finish top 4.

Don't get these fans that expect to win everything all the time.

Chelsea overperformed last season.player for player nowhere near as good as he had them playing as a team.

      Short memories.

Who said anything about expecting to win? Everything is going to sh!t, again. We are now 6 points off top 4, when we had a comfortable lead before. Maybe they over performed a bit last year, but if you consider their slow start they could have still easily won the league. And that is no excuse for how poor they've been this season. It's not a case of short memories, in fact I have far too many memories of this roller coaster ride which is Chelsea.

My son's been to most games this season and the feeling amongst those that go week in week out is that there is unrest caused by the owner. The regular fans who go regularly are well and truly behind Conte .

I agree with that, definitely. As I've said a few times they started this. I just can't stay behind these decisions he keeps making. Hazard centre forward clearly makes the team worse, for months now, and from his attitude today he clearly doesn't like it. I'm pretty sure Conte is set on returning as Italy coach.

If you think chelsea is a roller coaster ride, you should try supporting Leeds, Portsmouth or any number of other clubs.

For what ever reason Chelsea seem to do everything short term.

Any number of talented youth team players farmed out and never given a chance.

Managers never given a chance to build their own team.

First hint of trouble everyone wants manager sacked.

            Don't disagree there.

I've always hated that, and it's on the owner.

Agree, don't like the system and it's on the owner.

            Agree, also on the owner.

This is where I disagree. There have been a few managers I would have liked to keep over the years. Managers that fans adored, or at least were ok with. There's been a lot of trouble this season, and I've blamed the club for almost all of it. Now it's on the decisions I see Conte making and his attitude and how it's affecting the players. It's like watching the Mourinho show all over again.

I think that you're wrong. The owner runs the club and wants Conte out . The only way that Chelsea can win that tie is to play Hazard as a false 9 otherwise they will get hammered. Conte is not the problem. Morata and Giroud ( both signed by the owner ) simply are not good enough.

        Hazard. Cannot. Play. #9.
If Abramovich wanted Conte out that bad he would be gone already, we've seen that before many times. Conte keeps challenging them to fire him. He keeps making jabs at them in interviews etc.. To be fair to him, they started this and have treated him like crap the whole way through. Even recently when he publicly asked the club to back him and they didn't say anything.

Not at all. I think a female manager should wear a suit too. I think they would look more authoritative. However much a manager wants to be mates with the players, at the end of the day they are the manager. They can't be too close to the players IMO.

Me too, hasn't done anything away from home, feels strange ditching him after such a good return though, may hang on for 1 more.

Decent line up, no Mane or Shaqiri ? Id probably have a Hudds defender to enable Mane but Robertson has been looking very good lately.

    Adrian Foster
    VVD Mee Jones Dunk Morgan
    salah Erikson Mahrez Shaqiri Walcott
    Kane Firmino Quaner
    1.0 itb 1 ft

Thinking Jones to Christensen or maybe Dunk to Fernandez...

You probably got done by appearance points. KDB = 3pts, Aguero = 2pts, Murray = goal. All those small things add up. The average went up 9 pts today. So if you even got 1pt less than that I would expect a fall.

    Adrian
    Schindler Otamendi Alonso
    Walcott Shaqiri Eriksen Salah
    Deeney Kane Firmino

    Elliot Ibe Duffy TAA

    0.1 ITB & 1 FT
Which one of these should I do with GW31 in mind?

    A Adrian > Foster
    B Duffy > Hegazi
    C Duffy > Daniels
D Ibe > Van Le Para
    E Ibe > Milijoevic

      • 14 Years

Chelsea played a 22 man defence so there was no space for Aguero

Alonso was at fault for the goal and pretty piss poor but so was every other Chelsea player

      1. It’s gonna Ben Mee
