FFS Cup

Fantasy Football Scout Cup – First Round Draw

After a tough qualification round, involving more than 2,000 managers, the time has come to reveal who has made it through to the first round  of our open-to-all Fantasy Premier League Cup competition.

A score of 60 points, with a rank of 211,070 or below for those who hit that score exactly, was needed to become one of the 512 managers to progress from Gameweek 29’s qualification draw.

Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United saw HC Villa become the lucky manager to just scrape through. He successfully transferred in Reds left back Andrew Robertson, captained goal scorer Mohamed Salah and also earned an assist from Roberto Firmino.

Meanwhile, there is disappointment for our moderator Pukka-Geoff, who is 11th in the Career Hall of Fame. He scored 60 but just missed the cut due to his rank of 215,338.

In our previous cup, winner TH14 joined Sleepysi, Gribude, MCH, A Manager Has No Name, Mark, TH14, Wild Rover, Gooner Dave, CMIFLFC and myself in seeing their name on the cup.

Mark was particularly fortunate – gaining his bye with a 44-point total that was woefully short of the qualifying mark. He will need to improve if he is to progress past the opening round. He faces 592,201 ranked Khumz in his first tie.

Meanwhile, the 10,138 ranked reigning champion is among the favourites to make it through to the second round after drawing DaFoe22, who is 379,523 places behind him.

Sleepysi is another former champion who will be confident of progress. He is ranked a lofty 2,579 while his opponent BowenArrow is currently placed 48,461 in the world.

Gribude is just outside the top 5,000 and squares up to 53,866 placed Kirton Hoops, MCH takes on a SADIO SANÉ steered outfit that is ranked 128,450 placed behind him and my 1,644 placed side collides with 48,922 ranked BALLDONTLIE.

A Manager Has No Name, who is at the 5,281 mark in the overall standings, has arguably the most favourable tie among our former champions when he meets dupper9, who with a placing of 2,909,460 is the lowest ranked manager in the tournament.

The first round looks far trickier to navigate for Wild Rover, who is ranked 147,484 places behind his opponent McMurphy. Goonerdave (rank 259,377) also has a tricky encounter with 73,105 placed 2 Girls 1 Shlup.

CMIFLFC is another champion that may struggle. With a 1,904,353 rank he is the fifth lowest placed manager in the competition and takes his beleaguered troops into battle with Jon Nurse’s high-flying, 7,296 placed side.

Other notable match ups include 19,728 placed TorresMagic™’s tie with mooimachicken (rank 202,903) and our 4,322 ranked tech guru matzi11a’s clash with DAZZ (rank 93,016).

There’s also an intriguing derby when greghammer95 faces MC Hammer.

The first round features four managers in the top 100 of the overall rankings, howsheref (rank 78), davidoff7 (rank 93), Leaf (rank 97) and thisisdiz (rank 98).

The unlucky managers to take on this elite quartet are respectively 27,399 placed Nani R U OK, 43,700 ranked Grock United, 981,978 placed Duffy Dunk and Hoos01, who is 105,847 overall.

My opinions on playing FH in GW37 vs GW35.

I'm going to look at this ignoring the triple captain chip, as I've already used mine. Though I still think playing FH in 37 is an option for those with the TC chip intact.

I'm going get to assume the GW31 postponed games are rescheduled to GW34 and that GW35 postponed games are played in GW37 so as to not have too many variables. I know this isn't guaranteed.

We'll know more after the next FA Cup round and the confirmation of the dates for the rescheduled games.

In my opinion, it all depends on how many players you want from Chelsea, Spurs, Leicester and Man United (chances of two double gameweeks according to the bookies are 60%, 85%, 75% and 83% respectively).

If you're looking at 7+ then your best best is probably to FH in GW35. If this is the case, you will already have 7 (or more) strong DGW players for 37. The players you have for 35 are likely weaker players (as most players from the 4 teams above are expensive). Some teams will fancy keeping Salah as well if he's battling to win the golden boot. So that's now 8+ players you're happy with for 37 and you have 2 FTs. You can use those 2 transfers to field 10 very strong players for 37, and also use your FH chip in 35 to the 11 optimum players for 35. If you do take 8 or 9 players from the 4 teams above, you could quite easily end up with 11 strong players for GW37.

The other side to this is if you only want 5 or 6 (or less) players out of those teams. Now you could be better off holding the FH chip until 37 to field the best 11 DGW players, as you can use 2 free transfers to remove 2 of those players for blank gameweek players and bench the other 4.

In my opinion it all hinges on the amount of players you want who have two doubles. Personally, I have not made this decision but think I'm slightly leaning towards FH 35.

    tl;dr
    If your number of players from Chelsea, Spurs, Man United, Leicester for DGW34 is;

≥7 = FH in 35 (2 FTs for 9 or more DGW37 players + Salah if you keep him)

≤6 = FH in 37 (2 FTs to get rid of 2 of these for BGW35 players and bench the other 4)

So, thank you. To confirm, the tl;dr. "...If your number of players..."You mean, "...if your number of DESIRED players" (as opposed to currently owned...), right?

Yep, that's why it says "number of players... for DGW34". As in talking about the players you will have for that GW

Need to include Brighton and S'ton?

      1. agueroooooney

I could have but chose to focus on teams which will have the most popular double gameweek assets. I thought if I put them in people would question the validity of their inclusion, as I don't think very many people have a Southampton player on their radar and Brighton's second double gameweek is against Man United and Tottenham. Of course they could be added to the list of 4 teams there but I don't think their inclusion changes much.

Brighton also have two away matches in their first double; Man City and Crystal Palace, which also wouldn't be the most favourable. I am in favour of FH35 so they would just tip things a tiny bit more in the favour of that side of the argument. Should have been included for clarity though sorry.

My Free Hit squad for GW35 (with players from Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City) is likely to be extremely different from my Wildcard squad for the two DGWs (with players from Chelsea, Spurs, Leicester and Man United).

In both cases, many of these players will be premium ones, so it would not be possible to afford them all in a single squad - they aren't cheap players who can be benched when not required.

If I didn't play my Free Hit in GW35 then I would have to seriously compromise my wildcard squad and be considerably weaker in either the two DGWs (one of which is Bench Boost) or the blank game-week.

My wildcard squad will be completely useless for GW35 but will be designed to be strong for both DGW34 and DGW37, so GW35 is the natural home for the Free Hit.

Free Hit in GW35 sounds good for you so.

Remember though your Arsenal players you want for the blank GW you may want for the double as well. Also, most will keep Salah for the double too. Man City could be a no-go area with so much rotation after the league is won. So your free hit may only get you a couple of extra Liverpool players and some Man City punts. Just something to be wary of.

Furthermore, a lot could change between GW34 and 37 with injuries, rotations and suspensions. The in-form players might be very different then also. It will be very hard to know who will be in form in GW37 when wildcarding in 32/33. The best team for 34 might be very different to the best team in 37, so the FH chip could be helpful there.

I'm not trying to sway anyone either way, just trying to open people's minds who have tunnel vision with one strategy

Salah will be in my wildcard squad and is likely to be captain in most of the single game-weeks.
I'm not currently tempted to put any Arsenal players in my Wildcard squad.
Rotation at Man City in GW35 is a bit of a worry, though.

I'm setting up my wildcard squad to be strong for both DGWs but to completely ignore GW35.
If I had a second or third Free Hit then I could no doubt generate an even stronger team for DGW37 (even if I didn't still have my Triple Captain chip to pay then), but my ideal squad for DGW37 will almost certainly be far closer to my wildcard squad than my Free Hit squad for GW35 will be.

Yeah, so basically yeah, me thinking about a little defensive transfer this week.
What ya thinks? 1 in, 1 out, classic.
    Me defence is:
    Ota-VVD-Kenny-Francis-Goldson
Would you do Goldson to Schindler this week with that defence?

I am in the same boat, and will consider a move from Quaner to Mounie next week. That one is a true -4, and while Quaner rarely scores, unless is hurt, it does seem a bit on the aggressive side. There are probably more prudent moves. It would be a coupe if Quaner finally actually really really scored a goal.

I think that's a bit too "certain." Bottom half teams are not so reliable. One week Swansea scores 3 goals, and then next they can't even get a shot off. You never know. I'd say, between the two games, Hudds has a reasonably decent chance of getting one clean sheet.

No.. You'd have to go back to GW13 to see Swans not score against a team outside of the top 5 (Only teams to keep a clean sheet against them since then have been Pool, City, Tottenham, Chelsea)

The odds of a defender getting a clean sheet are much higher if the defender's team has a game than if the defender's team is not playing. It is not such an imprudent use of a free trade.

Struggling with this week's team. Currently looking like this:
    Pope
Alonso - van Dijk - Davies -Schindler
    Walcott - Mkhitaryan - Salah - Sterling
    Firmino - Kane

    Bench: Elliot, Shaqiri, Mee. Quaner

Already made an early transfer to get Schindler for Ogbonna, so no free transfer available. 0.1 in the bank.

Any tips as to what more should or could be done before the deadline? Sterling an issue (as is Davies, possibly?), with Shaqiri and Mee looking like coming on from the bench. Thoughts?

i’m looking to field 8 or so for gw31
WC32 (as long as we have DGW fixtures)
      Bench boost gw34
save FTs for optimising around gw35
      TC gw 37

Ok, with this midfield: Salah, Mahrez, Eriksen, Sterling, Ramsey, what should I do with Sterling?

To Sane or Arnie? Arnie's fixtures decent up to GW34, so I'm tempted to pocket some money but is going without a Man City attacker madness?

Is anyone who is FHing in 31 (I know there's some of us out there!) tripling-up on DEF? Taking the high risk, high reward approach? Way I see it is if it comes off it really helps you to maximize the chip, if there's no CS and you end up getting 2-2-2, oh well.

BOU is the obvious one but STO isn't a bad option either.

    Any takers?

    1. GoonerByron
      • 12 Years
      6 years, 1 month ago

Players like King and Shaqiri are potentially the most explosive for 31.. If using FH I definitely wouldn't recommend tripling on their defences

      1. L S P
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

they may be potentially explosive but they're also consistently inconsistent.

But say you take one of them, that leaves you the option to triple up on D for the other team. it also means you're separating yourself from the herd and, potentially, means you're getting the most value out of the FH.

Agian, no guarantees but for someone like me who's hovered around 300k for the past six weeks, has a comfortable ML lead and is a bit bored - why not roll the dice?

I was thinking Butland+Bauer but tripling up on Stoke may be a bit much...

I see your logic though, going all in. I'm taking a different approach in that I'm attempting to target the defenders who have attacking potential, like Coleman, VVD, PVA, Dawson, etc.

Have you drafted a FH team yet?

      1. L S P
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

no not completely, off the top of my head, maybe something like:

        Begovic
        Ake-Daniels-Coleman
        Salah-Mane-Siggy-Shaq--Mili/Zaha
        Firmino-Mounie/Benteke

And then some kind of bench.

Double-up might be a good compromise because it allows me to bring in PVA for that attacking potential

Sweet, looks decent. Like that you're thinking Siggy over Walcott...

          At the moment, I'm thinking:

          Butland

          PVA Coleman Ake (Dawson Daniels)
          Salah Mane Siggy Shaq (Zaha/Pritchard)
          Firmino Benteke King

unlike the narrative going around on here, i think there's points to be found in 31.

so I think it can be agreed that there are certain players that should be present in a gw31 team:

    Salah + 2 other liverpool
    Shaqiri
    walcott or siggy

But who else is on your gw31 watchlist and why?

I like the look of Coleman due to attacking potential, a Bournemouth attacker vs WBA (have wilson but thinking of stanislas or king)

anyone have any other punts they are backing? tekkers? Huddersfield?

I won't be able to log on after tomorrow afternoon so may not know final news re. Sterling which is making me nervous!.

Do you think I should cut my losses or hold my nerve? - trouble is my bench isn't great for autosubs

    A) Sterling > Sane / Silva
    B) Sterling > Mahrez
    C) Sterling > VLP / Pritch / Stanislas

    Alonso, VVD, Fernandez
    Salah (V), Hazard, Shaq, Sterling*
