Scout Notes – Salah Hits New Heights

Liverpool stroll past Watford 5-0 as Mohamed Salah single-handedly ensures a bumper haul for most Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers despite Gameweek 31’s reduced schedule.

The Egyptian was captained by 1.9 million (33.8%), 93 of the top 100 FPL managers and, as revealed by Ragabolly in his new article, 88.8% of the top 10,000.

A further 20,137 used their Triple Captain chip on him – 77.8% of the 25,883 played.

All that backing paid off as Salah delivered a first hat-trick in a Liverpool shirt, with four goals in total (from four shots), an assist and maximum bonus points bringing in a season’s best tally – by any player – of 29 points.

The records he’s accruing stretch ever further.

He’s now scored or assisted in 13 of his 15 home starts this season (17 goals and six assists), netted in his last six home Gameweeks (11 goals) and produced 14 double-figure scores in all.

For all these reasons, even without a double Gameweek to come, Salah surely has to be retained by all bar the bravest of managers.

Liverpool’s fixtures (cry eve BOU wba STK che BHA) are certainly strong enough to support more Salah hauls, but the situation is not so clear-cut for Liverpool’s other attackers.

More than 531,000 managers brought in either Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane ahead of today’s deadline and both delivered.

The latter produced two assists for Salah, both somewhat fortunate as the main man did most of the work to score from them, but it was a fourth successive Gameweek of returns from Mane nonetheless.

Firmino, meanwhile, was denied a first-half strike by a smart Orestis Karnezis save, but got his goal with an audacious flick from Salah’s cross after the break.

The Brazilian now has three goals and two assists from the last five starts, but he is arguably now disposable as managers move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy ahead of their forthcoming double Gameweeks.

That trio are already among the top four most bought ahead of Gameweek 32, although Firmino is currently right behind them in fifth.

Firmino and Mane’s form could also have a bearing on those pondering the Gameweek 32 or 33 Wildcard.

Liverpool go to Palace next and have three of the next four away from Anfield.

Firmino has three goals and two assists from his last six away trips. Indeed, two goals and an assist have arrived over his last three, with the recent defeat at Manchester United his only blank in that run.

Mane has been less productive – he has just a single goal and two assists from his last six appearances on the road. That last strike away from home came back in Gameweek 22 at Burnley.

The other factor to consider is that Liverpool face their Champions League Quarter Final with Manchester City four days after the trip to Palace, with the second leg to follow the Merseyside derby in Gameweek 33. Rotation has not been a concern when considering the Liverpool front three for several months, but this period will certainly be a test for Klopp’s resolve in that respect.

Elsewhere, those managers who didn’t solely invest in the Liverpool front three enjoyed a clean sheet – the side’s 13th of the season – from the likes of Virgil van Dijk and the excellent Andrew Robertson, who boosted his reputation with a superb cross for Salah’s second goal.

That was the full-back’s second assist in four Gameweeks, although there was no such joy for Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 3.9% ownership as Joe Gomez returned to the starting line-up after a five-match absence.

Even Robertson’s first double-digit haul of the season is unlikely to save him, or any of his backline colleagues, as managers look for defenders with double Gameweeks to potentially boost their returns.

Substitute Danny Ings set up the final goal on a record-breaking FPL day when many managers ended up with 100+ points from just the four matches played.

Wouldn't say all but it would for starters with back ups as capable as Rose.

Poch also loves rotating his full backs, would be very surprised if any of Bavies/Rose/Trippier/Aurier play both in GW34, barring injury of course.

The ones with dgws and good fixtures 🙂

Seriously I will hold 3 pool on WC.
Add some Arsenal but I think triple might be a trap.
      Utd defence
      Che and Spurs
      And probably Mahrez.
City I am unsure on still in CL and league wrapped up. Will have to be rotation. But they could still score big in some fixtures.

I don’t think it does chaps. For arguments sake, in January my points total in the drop down monthly league section was 252, I added the week points up and it came to 252 but my hits were about -16 so I cannot take it into account. Unless I’m being very stupid here.......

On Friday I reminded a ML rival to make changes to his team:

    https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/03/16/sky-sports-focus-54/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_17816044

Turns out he didn't anyway. He sent me a message saying he's really gutted, played the GW with 6 players, Kane (C) and Eriksen (V). Apparently he switched to Salah (C) and Firmino (V) but forgot to press save... Would've had 89 points compared to my 101 (-4) just from that, and with a decent chance of beating me this week had he used his transfers. 😀

It would feel a bit hollow if I beat him by less than 29 points to be honest, would prefer a challenge. It's been a difficult season for me after a fantastic last season, but this is the first time he's close to me this late so I'm enjoying the battle.

You think that's bad. 4 people in one of my mini leagues had captained Salah and somehow the system switched all our captaincies to Firmino!!! Super weird and we are also gutted. I got 75pts instead of 97. Would have thought it was my own stupid error, but to happen to all 4 of us - something is very strange.

        Yes, I still have BB.

So when is the DGWs and which teams have?

All the teams who didn't play yesterday will have one. Not confirmed yet but they seem likely to be in GW34.

Man United, Tottenham, Brighton and at least one of Leicester and Chelsea depending on today's cup games will have two DGWs.

34 & 37, I'd go light on cpl & the ones who played today, Salah keep of course. Careful on Gooners, Auba fine but the rest can be rested for EL

Not yet only mad 3 changes so far.
Not really thought about a cheaper defender yet. Might have 5 mid to high priced ones. Start to limit decent captain options for 34 though. But then again why not Salah.
If he can do it in a single game in a blank why not a single in a dgw ?

Hi TM. Sorry I missed this earlier. What was this week's cutoff score? Not captaining Salah might have cost me, I suspect. I got 81. Cheers.

He's fine, but his team are far from reliable.
There are great players to make an amazing midfield line.
      Willian, Son, Mkhi, Mahrez, ManCityMids.

He looks the best of the bunch from Bournemouth but I'll probably end up taking him out to save myself a transfer and either get Gudmundsson, Arnautovic or Hazard.

Would you WC this lot or hold fire until GW33?

    Pickford - Elliot
    VVD - Davies - Simpson - Dunk - Mariappa
    Salah - Zaha - Mahrez - Sterling - Pritchard
    Kane - Firmino - King

The shrewder and wiser managers are wildcarding in GW32.

Your team looks ok maybe Kane to Lukaku might be enough.

Do you have two FTs? If so, you might get by...but Kane, King, Pritchard, Zaha, Dunk, Mariappa, Pickford, Elliott all could go out.

Jay Eger-Spelling was 100% right as per.

Unless your name was Az, GW31 was NOT worth a hit.

    1. Pierce34
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 2 months ago

I think hits are one of those things that can only be judged in hindsight and in context of people's teams, hence why it normally is a good idea to not take a hit in a general piece of advice. I took a hit for King for example, which got me 1 point. Could've been better, could've been worse, but not an objectively 'good' or 'bad' decision.

    2. TallestJohn
      • 7 Years

Well, unless you got someone in who scored more than 4 points

    3. LonesomePundit
      • 6 Years

Some hits work. Too many people are afraid of risk ... and what happens if you lose out. If you are content with the losing points it's well worth the gamble.
      Stanislas in for Sigurdsson (-4)
      PVA in for Davies (-4)
      9 point gain.

      1. LonesomePundit

Though worth noting I had to get shot of Siggy anyways and Davies' rotation is annoying.

I understand getting DDG+Fabianski is a great combo to be ready for DGW34 too, but I prefer getting DDG+Maenpaa and invest the money in better outfield players, then turn Maenpaa to Fabianski just before the double.

    1. Rainer

If thats your plan go Nordfeldt in case Fabianski gets injured.

    2. Pierce34
      • 8 Years

Sounds good on paper, in practice this will almost certainly guarantee a hit, as other things won't go 100% to plan.

Getting deja vu seeing all these WC teams, apologies if you've posted before and I've replied 😀

Monreal could be rested for Europe. Don't think Morgan's a great option.

Midfield and attack good but Silva and Willian a bit expensive if they get rotated.
