Scout Notes – Salah Hits New Heights

Liverpool stroll past Watford 5-0 as Mohamed Salah single-handedly ensures a bumper haul for most Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers despite Gameweek 31’s reduced schedule.

The Egyptian was captained by 1.9 million (33.8%), 93 of the top 100 FPL managers and, as revealed by Ragabolly in his new article, 88.8% of the top 10,000.

A further 20,137 used their Triple Captain chip on him – 77.8% of the 25,883 played.

All that backing paid off as Salah delivered a first hat-trick in a Liverpool shirt, with four goals in total (from four shots), an assist and maximum bonus points bringing in a season’s best tally – by any player – of 29 points.

The records he’s accruing stretch ever further.

He’s now scored or assisted in 13 of his 15 home starts this season (17 goals and six assists), netted in his last six home Gameweeks (11 goals) and produced 14 double-figure scores in all.

For all these reasons, even without a double Gameweek to come, Salah surely has to be retained by all bar the bravest of managers.

Liverpool’s fixtures (cry eve BOU wba STK che BHA) are certainly strong enough to support more Salah hauls, but the situation is not so clear-cut for Liverpool’s other attackers.

More than 531,000 managers brought in either Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane ahead of today’s deadline and both delivered.

The latter produced two assists for Salah, both somewhat fortunate as the main man did most of the work to score from them, but it was a fourth successive Gameweek of returns from Mane nonetheless.

Firmino, meanwhile, was denied a first-half strike by a smart Orestis Karnezis save, but got his goal with an audacious flick from Salah’s cross after the break.

The Brazilian now has three goals and two assists from the last five starts, but he is arguably now disposable as managers move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy ahead of their forthcoming double Gameweeks.

That trio are already among the top four most bought ahead of Gameweek 32, although Firmino is currently right behind them in fifth.

Firmino and Mane’s form could also have a bearing on those pondering the Gameweek 32 or 33 Wildcard.

Liverpool go to Palace next and have three of the next four away from Anfield.

Firmino has three goals and two assists from his last six away trips. Indeed, two goals and an assist have arrived over his last three, with the recent defeat at Manchester United his only blank in that run.

Mane has been less productive – he has just a single goal and two assists from his last six appearances on the road. That last strike away from home came back in Gameweek 22 at Burnley.

The other factor to consider is that Liverpool face their Champions League Quarter Final with Manchester City four days after the trip to Palace, with the second leg to follow the Merseyside derby in Gameweek 33. Rotation has not been a concern when considering the Liverpool front three for several months, but this period will certainly be a test for Klopp’s resolve in that respect.

Elsewhere, those managers who didn’t solely invest in the Liverpool front three enjoyed a clean sheet – the side’s 13th of the season – from the likes of Virgil van Dijk and the excellent Andrew Robertson, who boosted his reputation with a superb cross for Salah’s second goal.

That was the full-back’s second assist in four Gameweeks, although there was no such joy for Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 3.9% ownership as Joe Gomez returned to the starting line-up after a five-match absence.

Even Robertson’s first double-digit haul of the season is unlikely to save him, or any of his backline colleagues, as managers look for defenders with double Gameweeks to potentially boost their returns.

Substitute Danny Ings set up the final goal on a record-breaking FPL day when many managers ended up with 100+ points from just the four matches played.

    Thoughts on this WC draft?

    DDG - Fabiasnski
Christensen - TAA - Lowton - Van der Horn - Chilwell
    Salah - Mahrez - D.Silva - Son - Willian
    Lukaku - Auba - Barnes

0.4 ITB, FH in GW35. Very top heavy and ideally wanted Monreal and Alonso but currently on Christenen and TAA to invest in midfield, thoughts?

Yeah trying to fit Monreal in for that reason, wouldn't do triple Arsenal so Mkhitaryan or Monreal and given other available midfield options I would opt for Monreal.

just be vary of Arsenals (Wengers) attitude towards resting, there is a chance Monreal is one that could be saved for europa league, from the last couple of team sheets that´s how it looked at least.

Walcott or Shaqiri to Mahrez for a hit? Will have to play one of the former two otherwise and think he'll do better this GW; also Mahrez will be in my WC team for GW 33 so figure I can avoid his likely price increase (and the others' likely fall).

Stephens + Morgan won't get you too many clean sheets. Might as well go with a LIV defender who may outscore them inspite of no DGW

They are just bench fodder who are nailled and have a dgw. Once in a blue moon I can get a cs out of them too. 🙂

    DDG Adrian
    VVD Christensen Dunk Morgan Mee
    Salah (Dsilva) Mahrez (Willian) Zaha
    Firmino Auba (Wood)

about 0.6 itb give or take price rises...

so the template midfield (and mine atm) looks to be:

    salah mahrez willian son sterling/silva

Now salah and mahrez should be in everyone’s teams (nailed/form/fixtures)

but i’ve got some reservations about the other three and maybe we need to look around and think of alternatives

Willian - form and fixtures but not nailed, he should be he’s been their best player but Pedro/morata/giroud may steal his minutes

Son - form but his next fixtures are che, stk, MCI/new, blank. i could also see moura/lamela/llorente stealing gametime

sterling/silva - form and fixtures - but city may wrap up the title before dgw34. silva might be allowed to go back to Spain for his family and sterling could be prone to massive rotation

so are we overlooking these points because we can have an affordable and convenient midfield?

should we be looking at any alternatives? hazard? mkhi?

    Thoughts?

        I'm going with
Salah, Mahrez Son, Willian and Mili in bench.
So I can have Lukaku, Auba and Firmino up front.
Cause Man City will have heavy rotation soon imo.

Totally agree. But for a counterargument:

Willian - BEst player and chelsea out of champions league so less likely to rotate. Great price too so shouldn't be overlooked

Son - Possibly the most explosive midfield player (excluding salah). I think against any team he could score 1/2. Dangerous not to have him.

City mid - Good to have for now but keep a FT for getting them out as soon as they wrap up the league. (to miki or pogba?)

this is the problem all three merit inclusion, but they could all go pear shaped. kind of feels like 3 could be too many and maybe choose 2 and then have and enabler or differential

Really good post - and certainly food for thought.

Currently on the template midfield too, but will certainly look elsewhere for options. Not sure Mhiki provides any more security of starts than the others - but is still a worthy option.

Hazard is an interesting one though. Maybe someone like Kenedy or Gross might provide the answer as an enabler.

Agree - but so hard to find totally nailed explosive and reasonably priced mids.

A lot will boil down to of you want a 5 man beast midfield as above.

Or a 4 man midfield and Alonso plus a cheaper mid....

Yeah - having to focus on value a bit more this year as my tv is significantly lower than usual. Arguably the template midfield delivers really good value already across the board.

Strikers don't interest me much (Auba, Firm and Barnes/Ayew should be fine), so it is really a matter of how much I spend on defence. And Burnley and Swansea offer decent cut price options with dgw and good fixtures.

If I went without a city mid id stop enjoying FPL even more than I do 😉

Son = first name on poch's team sheet. Lamela will play more whilst Kane is out anyway. Moura probably will be bit part till next season now. Son is the best option up front in kane absence . Don't worry about him

Willian yes I agree but at that price...value ain't it my man

Umm slightly concerned about son. As the cup game proved, being up top doesn't always equal points.

Just like hazards effectiveness is lower when played as a #9 so too I think will son. Erikson and Alli will profit the most I would have thought.

Im going to gamble on doubling up on the only team i havent selected from all season. the team i support, arsenal. im going with SALAH, MAHREZ, WILLIAN, MIKI, SILVA(turn to SON for dgw) allows me AUBA and KAKU with AYEW.
the other option is firminho and mili, but not convinced.

the city pool double fixture is definitely gonna help decide things.
