Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 32

With Premier League action finally resuming this weekend we have launched our latest Captain Poll to gauge your views on the best armband options for Gameweek 32.

After a sensational Fantasy Premier League haul of 29 points at home to Watford last time out, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (10.7) looks set to dominate the voting.

Four goals against the Hornets took his league tally to 28 and a commanding position in the Golden Boot race, four ahead of Spurs’ Harry Kane.

Next up in the league for the Egyptian, who scored in his country’s 2-1 loss to Portugal on Friday, is a trip to a Crystal Palace side that has only one clean sheet in their last eight matches. Over that period the Eagles have conceded 15 goals, the third worst record in the league.

Salah, meanwhile, has proved to be as devastating on the road as he has been at Anfield. Away from home, he has had more big chances (16) than any other player and is second only to Kane in terms of goals (11 to 13), shots in the box (37 to 42) and efforts on target (20 to 23).

His team-mates Roberto Firmino (9.7), who scored his 14th goal of the campaign in last weekend’s Watford encounter, and Sadio Mane (9.5), who recorded two assists in that game, could also garner interest.

However, there is a slight caveat to entrusting a Liverpool asset with the armband this weekend, as there is the possibility of rotation ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg tie against Manchester City, which takes place the following Wednesday.

The same fear may curtail interest in Sky Blues players. But with a favourable visit to Everton, they still merit consideration.

The Toffees have just one shut-out in their last four Goodison Park encounters, while on the road Pep Guardiola’s troops are the top side for shots (250), efforts in the box (149) and attempts on target (90).

David Silva (8.1) is their most prolific player away from home of late, with six goals over his last four road trips, the same number his team-mate Sergio Aguero has scored away from the Etihad Stadium all season. However, the Spaniard’s withdrawal from international duty this week for personal reasons may dent confidence in the playmaker.

Another City man to impress over their last four away matches is Leroy Sane (8.6), who scored twice over that timeframe from nine shots.

Arsenal’s Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang (10.6) is likely to put in a strong challenge for the summit against relegation-embattled Stoke at the Emirates Stadium. The former Borussia Dortmund striker is cup-tied for his side’s Europa League campaign, which should ensure he leads the line on Sunday.

A pair of nine-point returns in his last two league outings underlines his captaincy credentials, as does the Potters’ poor form on the road. Over their last six away days Paul Lambert’s men have shipped 12 goals, kept just one clean sheet and conceded 111 shots, with only West Ham (115) allowing more over that period.

Aubameyang is this week’s second bought player among, attracting over 143,000 new owners.

The most popular, with 152,000+ transfers in, is Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku (11.4), who is on a fine run of form with four goals and three assists over the last eight Gameweeks. He collides with a Swansea City defence that have managed just a single clean sheet in their last 12 away matches.

Chelsea’s home clash with Spurs looks tough to call and may see their assets struggle for votes. However, with an average of 3.6 goals a game in their last five meetings, there is merit in entrusting one of their attacking options with the armband.

For the hosts, Willian (7.1) has been making the most of his recent opportunities, with three goals and an assist in his last four starts. Although he has only made the first XI on 16 occasions this season, the Brazilian’s recent form should ensure he is among the first to be selected by Antonio Conte for Sunday’s match.

Three double-digit FPL points hauls, six goals and assist over his last nine matches also makes Eden Hazard (10.6) a key captaincy candidate to consider.

Spurs’ main contender for votes is likely to be Son Heung-min (8.3), who has notched four goals in as many league matches and looks set to lead the line in the absence of the injured Harry Kane. With more than 84,000 new owners since Gameweek 31, the South Korean is the most popular midfield acquisition among FPL managers.

Dele Alli (8.9)’s two goals and an assist in his last four, means that he can never be ruled out of the reckoning.

Christian Eriksen (9.4)’s two goals over his last four in the league, coupled with a brace in the FA Cup sixth round against Swansea this month, makes him another strong alternative option among the Spurs ranks.

Leicester’s trip to Brighton presents voters with a raft of further differential candidates, in particular, the hosts’ number ten Pascal Gross (6.0). Over his last six run outs the German has a goal, three assists and, along with Eriksen, has delivered the joint third highest number of key passes (18).

The main beneficiary of Gross’ creativity is likely to be the Seagulls’ veteran striker Glenn Murray (6.0), who has registered five goals over his last six games, an impressive tally only bettered by Salah and Aguero.

Claude Puel’s men have been in an obliging mood away from the King Power stadium, conceding 12 and keeping just one clean sheet.

But while suspect at the back, the Foxes boast two worthy armband candidates in attack. Over his last eight starts, winger Riyad Mahrez (8.9) has scored five goals and assisted a further three. Striker Jamie Vardy (8.8) has also impressed, scoring seven in his last 11.

Brighton’s failure to keep a clean sheet since Gameweek 21 enhances the case for captaining one of Leicester’s attacking duo.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 32 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Afternoon all,

    After lots of tweaking, it's finally come down to this. Please feel free to rip it to shreds. Any suggestions more than welcome;

    De Gea (Ryan)
    Otamendi, Alonso, Mustafi, (Morgan, Lowton)
    Salah, Son, Mahrez, Willian, Gross
    Aubameyang, Firmino (Barnes)

    Thanks

        Thanks,

If Kane's back I'll downgrade a defender and do Aub > Kane.
If not might just keep as is (pending no injuries).
        Don't like Lukaku.

        Cheers for the response

I'll have to take a hit to be able to afford that (downgrade a DEF). Really not keen on Lukaku, think it's possible that Liverpool and Arsenal will outscore even over DGW.

Why are all convinced that Mahrez and Vardy will play both matches in DGW coz I see they are most popular choices on WC? And they aren't cheap at all, especialy Mahrez. Leicester is almost mathematical safe from relegation(with a win over Newcastle).

They are Leicesters best players and asking them to play one extra game isn’t exactly asking much

They can physically play twice but they don’t have to play twice though, especially 4 days before a FA Cup semifinal - 3 games in 10 days so is that middle game likely to see some rotation ?

Puel now has Diabate, Iheanacho, Silva, Okazaki, Gray, many new(and old) faces and Riyad and Jamie are no longer irreplaceable like in Ranieri era.

Any feedback on this WC team? BB in GW34

    DDG - Schmiechel
    Alonso - Vertongen - Mustafi - Lowton - Morgan
    Salah - Mahrez - Son - Gross - Cook
    Lukaku - Auba - Barnes

Plan on doing Mustafi to Christensen or Smalling for GW34 and Schmiechel to a 3.9 keeper after GW34.

Highest in a single gameweek, followed by Lampard (28 points in a 7-1 win over Villa). Believe Rooney & Yaya Touré both scored higher in a double gameweek.

I don't think this team can be beaten with a 105m budget. Anyone disagree?

    Pope (Ryan)
    Smalling, Alonso, Monreal (Lowton, Morgan)
    Salah, Willian, Mahrez, Son (Ibe)
    Lukaku, Murray, Aubameyang

With Monreal + Aubameyang potentially making way in a double move after GW33. 0.2 in bank.

Four reasons why it's the best:

    1. Minus Salah, all players with DGW34 (two Arsenal boys to get transferred out before). 11 players with DGW37.
    2. Exposure to Liverpool (1), United (2), Spurs (1), Arsenal (2), Chelsea (2) and Leicester (2)
    3. Spread across Def, Mid and Att
    4. Good games for bench boost GW34, but cheap enough to not be a problem later on
    5. Two placeholders (Aub and Luk) for Kane should the need arise

Not actually going with that 15 personally , still not fixed on it yet, prob keep firminho for a couple of few weeks lose Auba in 34 as have FH and 36 don't want Auba as they have united

over next 2 Monreal , remains to be seen after DGW with Europa or not , but could be good pick but will be getting DDG , not sure pope will be dropped but the risk is now there

Thank you, I hadn't realised Heaton was back in training! Ideally I'd have De Gea in goal but I'm not sure how I'd do it. Think Monreal could be an explosive differential in either (or both) of the next two so I'm not prepared to downgrade him.

Any thoughts on this lot on WC with NO FH remaining. Plan to bench boost in GW34. I’ve compromised by taking out Willian who I’m not convinced it nailed with the FA cup looming.

    DDG Hennessy
    Bailly Roberston Tark Lowton Morgan
    Salah Mahrez Son Gudmunsson Ki
    Auba Lukaku Firm

    Gives me:

    GW34: 9 DGW
    GW35: 9 players + 2FT to field 11

WC draft 37, think i'm there:

    Courtois McCarthy

    Morgan Smalling Christensen Mustafi Fernandez

    Mahrez Salah Willian Ki Lingard

    Vardy Firmino Aubameyang

    34 - IN - Kane (if fit), Lukaku, 6m
    34 - OUT - Aubameyang, Firmino, Salah

    TC - 34
    BB - 37

    Talk to me!

I think in the DGW 34 there is a high chance at least 50% of:

      Smalling / Christensen / Mustafi / Willian / Lingard

Don’t start big games. If we were sure they would all start it would be a great team

Agree on that. I am going for Lingard because he is cheap and will get maybe one start and one cameo which would be fine.

I do agree with Christensen/Smalling and Lingard but funds are so tight, Lingard was my last pic and i'm still in two minds over him tbh

its looking likely to be Lukaku, but if Kane is back before then I would prefer him, I can't say i'm confident on either but there's far more to gain by BB 37 for me

    good morning all.

so I assume those without FH but have WC BB AND TC will build squad for gw 34 bb, wc 35 and tc 37? sounds best option?? with city arsenal spurs guaranteed dgws? gw 35 wc provides this. only way I see it possibly working with no free hit. what about yall

    1. Hotdogs for Tea

You could take a few hits in 34 and 35, TC in 34, WC in 36 and bb in 37

hmm so what abt minus 4 gw 32 gw 33 and gw 34 BB.. activate it in 35 to get players in for that blank gw in addition to dgw 37 ? also if tc in 34 who are your options

I was thinking about the WC in 35 but it doesn’t maximise the GW37 team so looking at about 7 doublers in 34 and 11 players in 35 with a few hits on the way.

WC 36 and get 13 DGW players and a very strong proper bench boost team rather than 2xBrighton & 2xBurnley in 34

            • 9 Years

hmmmmm it can work I didn't think of that strategy. what worries me is shortage of dgw players in 34 with this route. as oppose to a possible 10/11 dgw for 34 plus a full team in 35 with wc.. and 2 weeks to plan out 37

I already have Davies, Alonso, Lowton, Mahrez. My single players that I will keep Sane, Arnie, Salah, Firmino, Auba (and a few others play in 35) ... just need to add DDG and a one more and roll into 35 with a -4 maybe

so what would u do with this lot then

                ddg lossl
                lowton hegazi vvd ogbonna mbemba
                gross salah mahrez stan shaq
                Wilson mounie firm

I was thinking mounie out for vardy/lukaku
then gw 33 shaq out for son and stan for willian/hazard
and then gw 34 get 2 more dgw men. this would then give me 10 dgw and decent bench fixtures for BB.

gw 35 wc and plan forward for 37 with tc. plus a full 35 team

I used FH in 31 so didn't end up with the likes of Lossl, hegazi , Gross, Stan, Shaq, Wilson, Mounie etc. and I think you need to shift many of those.

I would probably do what you are doing, get the double game week players and WC in 35, but I would BB in 37 to limit transfers up to 34 (any bench in 34 is going to be poor for you)

I did expect Auba, Ayew, Arnie to have doubles in 34 and a game in 35 though but that was killed by the fact that 31 blanks did not go to 34. otherwise I would have been very well set up but now probably need a few hits.

HMMMMMM...... but with kane dgw in 37 being wba and Newcastle doesn't that make u want to tc him?

I don’t have the choice to BB in 34 and its a poor choice of player, so it has to be 37, which is better anyway. I will captain Kane in 37 and cover the TC with my BB.

if u want to tc in 34 the options to me seem to be mahrez, vardy, lukaku and KANE IF FIT. but that's scary I feel safer with bb 34 and tc 37. but that's just my gut.

    Hi All,

FH/BB/TC all in check - playing BB 34, FH 35 & TC 37 (Spurs and City look to have tasty fixtures)

Wildcard active - been tinkering, but I think I'm done. As a note I'm a QPR fan and my main mini league has a no Chelsea players policy.

    Pope Ryan
    Mariappa/Mustafi/Smalling/Lowton/Morgan
    Gudmonson/Son/Salah/Sterling/Mahrez
    Auba/Firminio/Murray

    £2.8m in the bank

Plan to bring in Lukaku 34 depending on the troll vibe I'm getting from him, and saving transfers to make 2 if I need them in 34 to make the team ok for 36 (FH will wipe them out otherwise) and covered for Kane.

I think I'm GTG. Assure me and release me from this drafting hell

I feel like you need at least a couple more DGW players in there, but I guess with the no Chelsea rule that leaves you with slim pickings

With the news that Butland will start against Italy tonight does anyone think Heaton has a realistic chance of going to the World Cup, and if you agree with me that he doesn’t, do you think Pope will keep his place until the end of the season?

    Wildcard
    A)
    de Gea (Hennessey)
Alonso, Lowton, Mariappa, (Chilwell, van der Hoorn)
    Mkhitaryan, Salah, Mahrez, Willian, (Milivojevic)
    Aubameyang, Lukaku, Barnes
