The ScoutCast – Episode 257 – Carping

The ScoutCast crew are always quick to jump on the shoulders of giants, so when a veteran of the Fantasy Football Scout community starts to threaten a Fantasy Premier League title tilt, we just have to get them on the show.

Matt Kearney aka “Bowstring the Cap” has been about on our pages for seven seasons but never has he experienced one like this. Currently ranked twenty-third in the world, he drops by in this latest episode to offer his take on the campaign and, in particular, the strategy for the run-in.

In truth, Matt was better placed before Gameweek 33 and, along with Jonty, Andy and Az, he joins me to look back at the lowest scoring weekend of the campaign when even the leading managers faltered.

But those gripes are soon drowned by a wave of enthusiasm on the eve of Double Gameweek 34.

That’s the focus for your latest set of community questions, sparking our thoughts on the optimum heavy-hitters, the rotation fears and our confidence in Chelsea to produce over the extra fixtures.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

    Best option to save the 1.5m needed for Auba > Kane?

    A. Son > Lingard
    B. Gross > Lewis Cook

    Swaying towards B as (i) I’d much rather have Son from GW36 onwards, (ii) I have my doubts about Gross’ potential, iii) not convinced by Lingard who burned me earlier this season plus rotation likely and (iv) it maximises the value of the first XI (avoiding expense on the bench).

    Would give me a ‘14 doublers plus Salah’ BB team in GW34 of the following, with FH to come in GW35:

    DDG (Ryan)
    Alonso, Morgan, Lowton (Dunk, Long)
    Salah, Mahrez(vc), Son, Willian (Cook)
    Kane(c), Vardy, Barnes

      Wait are you BBing with this team? If so would do the Son to Lingard move.

        Why’s that? You think Lingard and Gross will outscore Son and Cook? Probably yes, but I’m also factoring in the fact I want Son for the remaining weeks...

            I’ve weighed up the options and with my squad definitely think BBing this week to maximise the doublers on my bench is the way to go. Plus I’d much rather TC Kane in 37 given his fixtures.

          It's unlikely but Redmond can do it, Pied at a push. Mind you Bednarek can come in so if Sparky wants to keep 3 at the back they shouldn't need Bertie to do it.

      Depends who he has and who you think he'll captain.

    My Kaneless BB37 team will look something like this most likely:

    Lloris
    Alonso / Laporte / Maguire / Cedric
    Sanchez / Eriksen / Sane / Sterling
    Auba / Austin
    (Fabianski, Fernandez, Milivojevic, Ayew)

    14 DGW players + Mili if all goes to plan! Thoughts?

    BBing with this lot for now:

    DDG Ryan
    Alonso Bailly Morgan Duffy Lowton
    Salah Mahrez Son Willian Arnie
    Aubameyang Vardy Barnes

    2 FTs, 0.3 itb

    Which of these looks the best?

    Aubameyang + Son ➡ Kane + Lingard

    Aubameyang + Bailly ➡ Kane + Long

    Salah, Son + Aubameyang ➡ Sanchez, Kane + L. Cook -4

    Leaning towards B as Bailly will likely play just one game of the double and Long is an utter bargain now Mee is out. Would rather keep Alonso as I feel he's bound to come good soon. Son could get a rest for Brighton but will get some minutes off the bench anyway and is good to have from 36 onwards.

    Should I go for B?

    How important is having Kane in GW36 vs waiting until GW37? I know 37 is the big one (TC that week), but with BB this week and FH next, wondering if I should save the money (1.4) to go Lukaku->Kane in GW36, or just plan to double-swap him in GW37. Or simpler:;

    a) Save 1.4+ to ensure Lukaku->Kane in GW36
    b) Get Kane in GW37 with a double-swap, worry about it later

    1. Netley Lucas
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 2 months ago

      Woah, let's answer the question 😆

      Lukaku has ars36? Now that's bang in the middle of their EL semi's isn't it? Wenger will use squad players + Auba, Utd could smash them for 6 mate

      1. grayedog
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 2 months ago

        That makes some sense. Keeping Lukaku until GW37 gives me a bunch more options for this week, without needing to sacrifice elsewhere to find Kane (plus, I can TC Kane in 37 which I won't do this week).

        Preference here, if I were to keep Lukaku? Have (a) currently, 0.0 ITB, but 2 FT
        a) Mahrez + Christensen
        b) Pogba + Vertonghen/Bailly/Maguire
        c) Eriksen + Morgan/Chillwell

        I can get him now, if I make some big swaps, but it feels like Lukaku's a better bet in GW34.

        Would need to get 1.4 ITB out of either Alonso, Son, Salah, Willian, or Vardy. With a BB, not sure if any of those downgrades are worth the possible Kane boost -- especially if we think Lukaku in GW36 is also no worse than Kane...

      Very nice team, if Gudmundsson is a doubt can you downgrade your bench further to upgrade him?

        Thanks, no unfortunately. All in. Can do Valencia Courtois Gud to Defender DDG Albrighton, but no def whom I really want for 5.7

    Pope (Elliot)
    Moses, Davies, Chilwell (Klavan, Ogbonna)
    Salah, Sterling, Walcott, Mahrez (Westwood)
    Auba, Vardy, Lukaku

    1FT, 0.0ITb, No FH.

    a. Walcott, Klavan > Smalling, Lennon (-4). That leave me 7 sgw35.

    b. Save. Leave me 8 players + 2FT.

      I would save. 8 players + 2FT is potentially 10 players +4 given no hit this week

        Yes I think so. But going without Utd defence is scary the hell out of me.

          If they keep cleanie in both games, thats 8pts at best, relax! 😮

          Being defenders is not what usually scares people. Big hauls by Mids/Fwds is more of a worry.

            True. Luckly I have Lukaku as TC this week. But no Kane and Mid spurs worries me too. 🙁

    Want to upgrade defense to get Smalling and Vertonghen (for VDH and Mee, both injured). I plan to downgrade either Willian or Son (both DGW) for Milivojevic. Planned to lose Willian but now wondering ... thoughts?

        Already have double Burnley and looking to get rid of Mee. Unfortunately unable to upgrade defender without downgrading someone else...

      If you have Kane, better downgrade Son. Chelsea have nice fixture but no end products.

      Current team:

      DDG - Ryan
      Maguire - Lowton - Mee - VDH - Naughton
      Salah - Sterling - Willian - Son - Mahrez
      Lukaku - Vardy - Barnes

          Thought about this but have lots of value in him. .4 at least. As only City asset, I'm tempted to keep, but this could be my solution...

    DDG Ryan
    Alonso Smalling Lowton Morgan Mustafi
    Salah Son Mahrez Willian Gross
    Vardy Auba Barnes
    0.8m 2FT
    BB34, FH35, TC37

    Does the best use of the 2FTs look like Mustafi & Auba -> Long & Kane? (exact funds for this)

    Will stick with Salah.
    Other changes possible would be Alonso down as an enabler for maybe Vardy->Lukaku

      Long and Kane looks like a good bet.
      I have Lukaku, though, and his fixtures couldn't be better.
      I'd go with option A, though. Keep Vardy.

        That's my thinking. Any more than those 2 probably means an 8pt hit. Now I have Alonso I think I have to go for the 1/2pt per game ride.

      Kane Long seems smart choice. Mustafi plays UEL make him doubt to start this week.

    For a BB this week (FH next week) but also ROS...

    a) Mahrez + Christensen + Son
    b) Pogba + Vertonghen/Bailly/Maguire + Son
    c) Eriksen + Morgan/Chillwell + Son
    d) Mahrez + Valencia + Lingard
    e) Mahrez + Christensen + Lingard + 2.3 ITB for Lukaku->Kane in GW36
    f) Eriksen + Christensen + Lingard + 1.8 ITB for Lukaku->Kane in GW36

      Not A - Christensen not nailed.
      B looks good but Pogba won't perform in every game.
      Eriksen is on fire but you missed his big hauls.
      D looks good.

        Ah crap just realized I can't do D, I have Lukaku+DDG already. 2 options instead:

        X) Mahrez + Azpi + Lingard
        Y) Mahrez + Vertonghen + Lingard + 1.6 ITB to get Kane in GW36

    Is the guy that doesn't buy players over 10 mill about? Or does anyone have a link to his team?

    Remember him saying he was top 10k back in January and am wondering how he's doing now.

    C. Mustafi -> Vert
    D. Mahrez -> Eriksen
    E. Son -> Alli

    DDG, 3.9m
    Mustafi, Christensen, Morgan, Lowton, Dummett
    Salah, Mahrez, Son, Willian, Mili Lukaku, Auba, Vardy
