Dugout Discussion – Saturday

With two evening games to come, the afternoon’s proceedings are limited to just a quartet of matches.

From a Fantasy perspective, potential returns will be expected from Burnley’s clash with Leicester City along with Brighton’s visit to rivals Crystal Palace.

The Turf Moor clash finds two Double Gameweek teams collide, splitting the allegiance of Fantasy managers.

Burnley’s defence has just one clean sheet from 11 matches, with their last shut-out at home arriving back in Gameweek 18. Nevertheless, their defence has attracted sizeable investment ahead of today’s deadline with over 266,000 swooping for a member of today’s back five, with budget pick Kevin Long the most popular, having claimed 72,000+ new owners.

For the Foxes, the key assets are more obvious with Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy boasting a combined ownership of over 2.4 million.

The latter heads into today’s game as the second most signed player of Gameweek 34, recruiting 246,000+ managers following a run of three goals in successive matches and seven in nine Gameweeks. Vardy is also backed by 225,000+ (4.0%) with the captaincy.

Points from the Selhurst Park encounter appears less likely, though both Palace and Brighton fought out a goalless draw in the reverse fixture and that’s a result which would certainly pacify recent investors in the Seagulls’ defence. Some 34,000 managers signed one of Brighton’s back five for Gameweek 34.

Glenn Murray and Pascal Gross also remain well backed for Gameweek 34, despite a run of three successive blanks for the pair. That attacking duo are the most signed Brighton players heading into today’s deadline, claiming a combined 78,000 new investors.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Using BB in a normal week where your bench all have quality fixtures might not have the same potential as a DGW BB but it sure would give you a lot more flexibility around DGW time.

Really it's a fairly weak chip. Starting to think that being able to wildcard the week of a DGW (rather than a week or two beforehand) is probably more valuable, especially as we would have been able to focus fully on GWs 32 and 33.

Something to consider for next year.

      1. Brosstan
        • 9 Years

It seldom happens that your bench has quality fixtures unless you plan specifically for it though. Most have at least one fodder on the bench during normal season, very often two.

      2. TallestJohn
        • 7 Years

Not sure. Agree it's not always a strong chip as the reality for me is the worst 4 players in my 15 man squad have never scored 16 points this season. But think a DGW is still the best chance for it.

It's the best chance for the BB, sure, but it weakens your wildcard, which is a significantly more valuable chip.

My bb is crappy but I still expect to get 15-25 points. I doubt I'd get that from a SGW, esp early in the season when one of my squad might not be a starter.

And the changing wildcard is an odd one - I'm not sure it weakens it, as the whole idea of a team changing so drastically in a week illustrates how sensationalism defines decision. Early wildcarders might well have benefited from Hazard and Gudmondsson points this week for example

The point isn't to maximise your BB total though, it's to maximise your overall score.

Say using BB in a DGW rather than a single gets you fifteen extra points. You could easily make that up and more with the better wildcard you'd have (as a result of having to commit to players two weeks in advance) and the fact that you would have been able to focus on 32/33 with a team designed for those weeks rather than for 34.

Take Jonty as an example. This week he said that if he could wildcard again he would have Sanchez. That's a potentially significant change that he was boxed out of because he wildcarded two weeks early to accommodate the bench boost. A player like that could make up the fifteen points difference I mentioned all on their own.

As I said above, I think the idea of a wildcard changing so drastically illustrates a brand of sensationalism which negates success. Why should one or two extra weeks be more important than the 31 others? I could see late wildcarders missing out on Salah points, Hazard points, Gudmondsson points etc

GW32/33 wildcarders are basing their teams on the same sensationalism too though, it's just two-week old sensationalism by the time the gameweek they're targeting comes around.

Using Jonty as an example again, he'd surely need to trust his own judgement enough to believe that the decisions he makes with up to date information will be better than decisions he makes with information from two weeks ago. The wildcard he picks this week would, in his eyes at least, be a better one.

The two extra gameweeks could be crucial given the potential for injuries, form, league position and external fixtures to change.

Imo, we can't decide that until after these gameweeks. I don't see that much has changed between these two weeks. Sanchez has form - that is a major one, but I see think Lukaku is a better option. The question may well be - which degree of sensationalism happens to be best. But imo the decision should be made based around the season and not on a couple of weeks form.
