Team of the Season – Roberto Firmino

Our Team of the Season for 2017/18 is completed with the addition of Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian earned 31% backing in the recent forwards poll to claim a place alongside Harry Kane up front in a 3-5-2 formation.

Reclassified from a midfielder to a forward in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he offered a strong double-up option alongside Mohamed Salah as a route into Liverpool’s prolific attack.

Starting at a bargain £8.5m, Firmino opened up with a pair of 12-point hauls in the opening three Gameweeks.

He added a further five double-figure tallies, serving up 15 goals, eight assists and 29 bonus points.

Firmino’s all-round style of play boosted his ability to bring in additional points in the Bonus Points System (BPS).

The Liverpool striker created more chances (57) than any rival up front and sat second for successful tackles, with 65.

As a result, he was awarded bonus points in 12 of the 13 matches that he scored in.

That kind opening price tag ensured that the Brazilian was a hot property in FPL – more than 4.6m managers drafted him in, second only to Harry Kane (5.4m) overall.

Ending the season at a cost of £9.5m, his £1.0m price rise was more than double any other forward apart from Kane (£0.6m).

Firmino allayed any fears over rotation by appearing in 37 of The Reds’ matches – more than any team-mate.

Only Salah (34 to 32) was named in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI more often, with appearances off the bench mainly down to late-season progress in the Champions League and a congested festive schedule.

In terms of goal threat, Firmino was again second to Salah for shots (84 to 144) and efforts on target (37 to 66) for the Merseysiders.

Assessed against 2016/17, he received more big chances (from 14 to 17) and created more big chances (from 10 to 11).

On the downside, Firmino’s minutes per shot (from 30.7 to 33) and key pass (from 40 to 49) both dropped a little last term.

Nonetheless, a total of 181 points – one more than the previous campaign – earned him third place in the FPL forward standings behind Kane and Jamie Vardy.

The Prospects

Firmino’s price may ultimately determine how we assess his Fantasy appeal next season.

Certainly, a rise is inevitable in light of last term’s success. While a cost of up to £9.5m would be regarded as acceptable, a hike to £10m or £10.5m would likely deter many.

Given that Salah is poised for a hefty jump in price, those looking to invest in Liverpool may limit their interest to the Egyptian if Firmino also climbs into the premium bracket up top.

There’s no doubt that Salah’s consistency and ability to provide huge hauls gives him a considerable edge over his team-mate – he averaged 8.4 points per match to Firmino’s 4.9.

Firmino, on the other hand, required patience last time around.

He scored in just two of his 15 appearances from Gameweek 2-17 and finished the campaign with a single goal in seven fixtures.

While such sporadic returns were made easier to stomach by his price tag, a premium-priced Firmino would need to be far more reliable to be worth the investment.

There would be no surprise to see Firmino again claim a place in the top five forwards next time around, with his role as the spearhead of Liverpool’s attack undoubted.

That consistency of selection under Klopp clearly works in his favour, while a role as understudy to Gabriel Jesus for Brazil in this summer’s World Cup should keep Firmino relatively fresh for the start of 2018/19.

Depending on the price rise, though, he may have to up his output to remain such a popular pick.

Firmino deserves to be in team of the season IMO. £8.5m bargain. Won't be in my fantasy WC team mind.

Read the full article and peel the onion. He goes for vast periods without attacking returns. He did it the season before last as well.

Best case scenario would have been if the crystal ball had told us to sign him up GW15 then sell GW30. Even in that super unrealistically optimal case, I don't think he was particularly great.

For me, Firmino is the Trump of FPL. Someone who lots of people voted for but noone seems to understand why

Absolute talisman of his team with Peru & Australia in the first 2.

Having looked at the classifications, the midfielders are pretty poor choices IMO. Too many attacking mids are classified as forwards (David Silva, Sterling, Hazard, Salah etc.) and a lot of the midfielders are high priced (Tadic, Lingard etc.). Even Paulinho and Coutinho - their goals and assists record is not that good compared to Jesus (same price), Costa, Werner, Cavani etc..

Personally feel the focus has to be on the forwards and defence with perhaps one premium midfielder.

Who do you think are the 3 most important players to own in a draft league (price no object)?

    Currently on this order:

    1. Neymar
    2. Griezmann
    3. Muller

Bare in mind that as thier wont be many transfers, it's important to have players who are likely to go deep in the tournament

    Much appreciated

Some decent 5.0 mids in Al-Dawsari and Nandez, Carrillo a good 5.5 forward and so is De Arrasceata. Flores at 6.5 for Peru is decent although really you should be going for Guerreiro at 7.5 if you fancy Flores.

I’m at the same question. They have very similar roles (star of the team, all set pieces). I think it comes down mostly to how do you feel about their opponents. James starts with Japan which might be a big haul for him. Also consider which captain options you have for each day

    RMT:
    Muslera Uzoho
    Kimmich Meunier Sidibe Tagliafico Hegazy
    Eriksen Isco Smolnikov Nandez Sanchez
    Cavani Jesus Lukaku

Smolnikov not a popular option here but I’m tempted to have a Rússia captain for the first match (him or Golovin).

    Possible options I’ve played with:
Eriksen and Smolnikov > Muller and Carrasco/Golovin
    Eriksen > James

Just not as exciting. Want to go for as many non-PL guys as I'm comfortable with.

I think he looks really great! Unfortunately there are a million other strikers who also look really great.

Appears to be the starter and they play Japan gw2. Senegal appear to be a mainly defensive side.

Any criticisms of this appreciated. Think it’s quite solid. Captains on every day.

    Ozoho
    Kimmich Godin Sidibe Danilo
    Muller Nandez Ndiaye
    Lukaku Griezmann Jesus

Pickford J. Rodriguez Meunier C. Sanchez

really solid - i would be tempted by

      Griezmann------> Cavani

Ok. Here’s my team so far (couple of placeholders in there):

    Pickford Uzoho
    Granqvist Trippier Meunier Kutepov Varela
    Eriksen JRod Mueller Nandez Colindres
    Smolov Cavani Lukaku

    Thoughts?

I would rather have Saudi arabian players in my team than russian ones (and thats not a political statement, I genuinely think Russia are gonna be trash). Better gk options than Pickford as well

Not many decent budget forwards available and Smolov is at least a captain option for the first game

He's not *that* cheap is he? Would rather have Guerreiro

Hmmm yeah, he was originally in there instead of Smolov.

            Maybe.

I know Müller loves the world cup, but I think everyone is forgetting that he played 6 and scored 0 at the last euros. Why are so many going with him? Am I just being an idiot or?

Ooooh, thanks for that! I have him, but desperately wanted to clear some money for elsewhere, and I also have Werner - may be happy to go without.

If you already hve Werner i would definitely be inclined to go without. I am quite concerned for Germany in the attacking sense as I think the goals will be spread out. I have Kimmich as my only German at the moment, Germany will more than likely keep clean sheets and he has insane attacking returns

On the same question: reason for it? I have Kimmich and Danilo but no other player from either

    @ RealFevr

    A) Eriksen 9M; Jesus 8,5M; Werner 7,5M; Lukaku 8,5M

    B) Sanchez (Uru) 5M; Griezmann 10M, Suarez 10M, Lukaku 8,5M

    C) Ziyach 6M; Jesus 8,5M; Suarez 10M, Lukaku 8,5M; 0,5M ITB

Rest of my mid: Modric 7M; Kroos 6M; Paulinho 5,5M; Cuadrado 7M

    Other relevant prices: James 9,5M; Coutinho 10M;

Not B. What's Cavani's price compared to Suarez? I think Werner and Eriksen just edges it for me over Ziyech and Suarez
