World Cup 2018 – Team Analysis – Tunisia

Tunisia have been a little overlooked for World Cup Fantasy with two big nations draw in the same group as them.

However, going into the tournament with just one defeat in the last 15 months, there’s no reason that the cheap options available can’t be differentials for risk-taking Fantasy managers.

We’ve got everything you need to know about England’s first opponents of the World Cup.

ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

Securing passage to Russia out of a favourable draw in qualification, Tunisia have been perhaps unfairly written off as another set of World Cup whipping boys. Since booking their place at this summer’s finals, the Eagles of Carthage have gone toe-to-toe with some of Europe’s big sides and shown they will be no walkovers in Group G. At the very least, they should prove a much sterner test for Belgium and England than Panama.

Coach Nabil Maaloul, in his second spell, has been in the job just over a year and took charge of the last four qualifying matches in CAF Group A. Tunisia had won the opening two fixtures but were eliminated from the quarter-finals of last year’s African Cup of Nations by Burkina Faso at the quarter-final stages.

Implementing a 4-3-3 formation, Maloul oversaw two wins and two draws to top Group A and since then has impressed on the friendly circuit. In 10 matches played since last March, Tunisia have lost just once. The group of players is one that seemingly never gives up either, twice coming from 2-0 down in big matches to salvage draws; against DR Congo in qualifying and recently against Portugal in a warm-up match.

In fact, the warm-up programme went better than could be expected. In order to replicate playing against Panama, England and Belgium, Tunisia arranged friendlies with Costa Rica, Portugal and Spain. From those three matches in particular, they registered a win, a draw and a defeat. Costa Rica were beaten 1-0, Spain were given a stern test and only came out 1-0 victors, while Maaloul’s men stunned Portugal by coming back from 2-0 down to draw. Seeing success in those results, Tunisia will not be afraid to ask England and Belgium questions, just as they did against Spain and Portugal.

The only things for Tunisians to be disappointed by is the difficulty of that Group G draw but more importantly the injury to best player Youssef Msakni. He was vital during qualification, scoring and assisting three times each (six goal involvements) in six matches, but suffered a cruciate knee injury in March.

CAF QUALIFYING

Most starts: Mohamed Amine Ben Amor, Ali Maloul, Aymen Mathlouthi (all 6), Hamdi Nagguez (5), Ghilane Chalali, Yassine Meriah (both 4).

Most goals: Aymen Abdennour, Anice Badri, Ben Amor, Anis Ben-Haitra, Chalali, Wahbi Khazri, Meriah (all one).

Most assists: Ben Amor, Maloul (both 2).

THE KEY TARGETS

Anice Badri (£5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy) didn’t feature much in qualifying but has been a key figure for Tunisia in recent friendlies. The Esperance forward has scored in two of Tunisia’s last three matches, against Portugal and Turkey, adding to his one strike as a substitute in CAF Group A. Hitting form at the right time, Badri has started the last three friendlies as a wide forward, either on the left or right. His Fantasy appeal is furthered by McDonald’s classifying him as a midfielder on their official game, with a budget price fo just £5.5m. Badri could be an essential pick for anyone playing their Wildcard ahead of Gameround 3, Tunisia are set to play Panama.

Key midfielder Mohamed Amine Ben Amor (£5.0m) hasn’t featured in any of the World Cup warm-up starting line-ups but has recorded 65 minutes of football from two substitute appearances. The Etoile du Sahel man was involved in three goals during the six-match final qualification group, one scored himself and another two assisted. Whether he will return to the first XI for the first game against England is uncertain, but he is an important figure for Tunisia. But if the Eagles of Carthage are only on your radar as a team to invest in for their Gameround 3 fixture with Panama, by that point it may have become clearer whether or not Ben Amor is going to be involved in the starting XI.

Ever-present defender Ali Maaloul (£4.5m) could offer budget value in Tunisia’s back-line. The attack-minded left-back started every single qualifying match and contributed a pair of assists, home and away against Guinea. The 28-year-old was also the provider for Fakhreddine Ben Youssef’s equaliser against Portugal. Maloul is well-acquainted with finding the net too. In 143 league appearances for CS Sfaxien he scored a whopping 56 goals, a record for a defender in the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1.

THE LONG SHOTS

Tunisia’s hopes of an unlikely progression from Group G at the World Cup rest on the shoulders of Wahbi Khazri (£6.5m). After being booed out of Sunderland back in August, the 27-year-old has revitalised his career in France on loan with Rennes. In 29 appearances in all competitions he found the net 11 times and assisted twice, operating successfully as a make-shift centre-forward. That has brought calls for Khazri to do the same for Tunisia at the World Cup. However, he has hardly proved his Fantasy pedigree at international level in the last two years. He started just half of the CAF Group A matches, scoring a penalty against Libya in 2016, and hasn’t registered any minutes in any of the World Cup warm-up matches as he recovers from a muscle fibre injury. But if he can replicate his club form in Russia then at £6.5m he could be an effective differential.

Expected to start on the opposite attacking flank to Badri is Lille’s Naim Sliti (£5.5m), he’s featured from the start in the last three friendlies. Unlike his aforementioned team-mate, he has been classified as a forward by McDonald’s and hasn’t scored for the national team since March 2017. However, he was the top-scorer for Tunisia as they made it to the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations. Sliti found the net twice in Gabon and could prove himself again as a tournament player once again in Russia.

I agree he’s a good pick, but I think some people are expecting the Jrod of 2014, which isn’t obvs the case. Also didn’t score against best teams in qualifying (only 1 goal against another qualified team - Peru). Good pick but by no means essential I would say 🙂

Back to the drawing board, came up with the following:

    Muslera, Uzoho;
    Varela (fit?), Danilo, Kimmich, Meunier, Mojica;
    Cueva, Müller, James Rodriguez, (10,5 for 2 mids);
    Cavani, Jesus, Lukaku;

Captains for the first 2 rounds:
    Day 1: -
    Day 2: Cavani
    Day 3: Cueva
    Day 4: Jesus / Müller
    Day 5: Lukaku
    Day 6: J.Rod
    Day 7: -
    Day 8: Cavani
    Day 9: Cueva
    Day 10: Jesus
    Day 11: Lukaku / Müller
    Day 12: J. Rod

    Question:
With 10,5 for two mids, who should I get?

I like Belhanda from a few years ago. Nowadays not sure.

To be fair, there are slim pickings at this price points. 4.5s are only DMs. Belhanda is a nr10, plays Iran first game and has 2 goals in the last 2 games for the National. Aldawsari is my pocket pick at 5.0 that plays a winger and had a great match against Germany this week. The group is pretty easy to.

That being said this is scraping the barrel in McD fantasy as there arent many good picks at this price. I just think these two are the best for their prices.

Here's my shot at a team after taking in advice from some very helpful people:

    Pickford - Uzoho
    Kimmich - Miranda - Meunier - Varela - Hakimi
    JRod - Eriksen - Ljajic - Meza - Nandez
    Lukaku - Cavani - Jesus

    Thoughts?

I'm surprised Mitrovic is in so few teams. In form, great fixtures, essential for his team, and only 7.5. What am I missing?

The incredible selection of 9.0-10.0 strikers. It's not that Mitrovic is bad; it's just that there's so much premium choice!

Exactly this - Mitrovic a striker of championship quality is 7.5 - Cavani, Jesus, Mbappe etc are 1.5-2 more

        1. Maddi Son
          • 6 Years

But you've also got to take into consideration the extra 2-3 mill. When I have Mitrovic in my team it allows me to have one more premium midfielder. e.g. Eriksen instead of Cueva.

I'm still juggling my team though, can't decide myself.

As a believer in your bench theory, I'm just struggling on budget.

Players like Neymar, Eriksen, Rodriguez, Ziyach, Kimmich all feel hard to drop; rest looks like dross if you've got 3 premium attackers.

          Fair.

I'm sacrificing by missing out on Neymar/Messi.
I wouldn't argue with anyone if they thought Neymar/Messi + Mitrovic would outscore Werner + Lukaku, say. I think you could make a very good team that way. It's just not what I personally favour.
Also don't really want to claim this as my bench theory lol - just seems really sensible to me.

Playing in the hole behind Cavani and Suarez or out wide, depending on formation. Should start the first game, but not 100% nailed.

    Gallese
    Danilo, Mojica, Meunier
    Muller, Rodriguez, Paulinho, Eriksen
    Lukaku, Mbappe, Mitrovic

    Uzoho, Varela, Sabaly, Kvist.

    Bench too weak?

  8. The_Adam

Chopping and changing my side so much. Settled on this for now.

Bench Boost in GW1. WC in GW3.

    Lloris / Uzoho
    Kimmich / Meunier / Stones / Godin / Danilo
    Mueller / J.Rod / Lo Celso / Cueva / Ljajic
Cavani / De Arrascaeta / Jesus

Daily captain changes if needed: Cavani, Cueva, Jesus, Meunier, J.Rod

Will likely use my FT for GW2 by changing Cueva (who plays France) for a 6.0 (or less) midfielder who has a favourable fixture. Gives me 15 players will decent games for that week then. Then WC.

Considering I have Cavani as a day 2 captain, is it worth to drop Isco to get Eriksen/JRod and get a strong captain pick on one of those days? Isco has been nailed on my team since the first draft, but the captaincy rotation is making me consider taking him out...

I'd imagine that you have solid captains on other days too - I wouldn't let that change things too much. I think the better debate is simply will Isco outscore or equal Jrod/Erik? That Spain group is defensively solid throughout and I can see multiple 1/2 goal victories and maybe even a 0-0/1-1 with Portugal.

James Rodriguez is surely a good pick and could do well again, but why are people picking him for "last day captain". Isn't there a smaller chance of using him or Belgium assets as captains, because your previous captains could already have scored?

Depends how you intend to play the game. Personally if I captain Cavani and he scores 1 goal and no assists I will be changing to try get a higher score. It's not impossible captaincy will reach Belgium or JRod/Lewa

It's just a matter of safety. Of course you'd want your big guns to go first (hence Uruguay being a great bet, and on paper Ronaldo with a decent price and group could be too), but it's nice to have the safety of a solid pick in the end. With him and Belgium, you have a very good chance not to end up with a 2-pointer as captain.

Anyone considering a 4-5-1? I've got this and kind of like it:

    Lloris
    Vrsaljko Kimmich Godin Meunier
    C.Sanchez J.Rod Eriksen Carrasco Mueller
    Neymar

Pretty much fodder on the bench - plan is to W/C for round 3. I would prefer better Belgium cover so may find a way to move Carrasco to De Bruyne.

Anyone else on a 4-5-1, or think this is a disaster waiting to happen?

    El Kajoui, Caballero
    Varela, Tagliafico, Mendy, Granqvist, Meunier
    Meza, Eriksen, Ljajic, Claesson, Jrod
    Cavani, Lukaku, Lewa

3- Belgium attacking prospects, Uruguay defence, talismans like JRod, Eriksen

Not seeing much Lewandowski and Griezmann around?

    Why not?

I'm not very keen on Griezmann, stats not as good as other heavy hitters and I have a feeling France might have a poor World Cup.

Lewandowski is currently in my team. It's either him or Jesus.

With Lewandowski I think people look at the bigger teams and just forget him since he plays for Poland. He's their main man though, and scored (i think) 16 in 10 games in qulaification

Only concerns with Lewandowski is he hasn’t performed in major tournament before (despite posting great qualifying numbers) and Poland haven’t got more players of his quality. Still think he’s a great pick at great price and in my team atm

Griezmann is a good pick, but this season his numbers haven’t been quite as good at Atlético. Lewan gets my vote as also saves you 0.5 over Griez, Lukaku etc

Playing on a local site. Same point structure as FPL. Bonus points given. 2 free transfers between each fixture and the transfers can be saved. Pleas help me pick one:

    A. Werner, Hazard, Kimmich, Marcelo, Godin (4-3-3)
    B. Lukaku, Eriksen, James, Hector, Sidibe (3-4-3)

    Rest of the team
    Cavani - Lewandowski
    Neymar - Paulinho
    Meunier
    Pickford

    Thanks guys!

    Belhanda or Ziyach?

Would prefer Ziyach but not sure whether he’s worth the extra outlay

Ziyach on pens - but otherwise either could get goals assists

Doubts if they change to 4 at the back, concerns about last game if they need to win
