The Best Goalkeepers to Buy in FPL 2018/19

Now that the dust has settled following the launch of the Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 game, we can start to look at each position in a bit more detail. We’ll begin, as we often do, with goalkeepers.

David De Gea has been announced as the most expensive shot-stopper at £6.0m, which may deter some from investing in the Manchester United number one.

Meanwhile, Lukasz Fabianski looks set for high ownership given that he has held onto his £4.5m price tag.

Who are the best premium goalkeepers?

Ederson (£5.5m) looks to be the most viable premium goalkeeper option for the start of 2018/19. Not only do Manchester City have the best fixtures in the opening seven Gameweeks (playing all six of the most recently promoted clubs), their goalkeeper also benefits from being priced cheaper than some of his defensive colleagues: Nicolas Otamendi and Kyle Walker are both £6.5m, while Benjamin Mendy is £6.0m. John Stones, Vincent Kompany, Danilo, America Laporte and Fabian Delph – none of whom looked particularly “nailed” – are all £5.5m too.

Whilst goal and assist potential strengthens the case of Otamendi and co, rotation under Pep Guardiola could make Ederson the only member of the City backline who is assured of a start. After the Gameweek 1 fixture against Arsenal (a match City won 3-0 last season), City face Huddersfield (h), Wolves (a), Newcastle (h), Fulham (h), Cardiff (a) and Brighton (h) in their next six fixtures.

Thibaut Courtois (£5.5m) is another premium asset to consider, with Chelsea currently sat second for defence in our season ticker. In the first six Gameweeks the Blues have away fixtures at Huddersfield and Newcastle, as well as home matches against Bournemouth and Cardiff. Only De Gea and Ederson collected more clean sheets than Courtois last season and, like his Man City counterpart, the Belgian shot-stopper offers a slightly cheaper route than his defensive team-mates to potential shut-outs.

Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta have been handed £6.5m price tags, with Victor Moses and Antonio Rudiger marked up at £6.0m. Gary Cahill, David Luis, Andreas Christensen, Davide Zappacosta and Emerson all match Courtois’ price but, at this stage, are much less guaranteed a start.

Hugo Lloris completes the trio of £5.5m goalkeepers and has a strong case for inclusion in our squads too, considering that only one of his defensive colleagues will start the 2018/19 season at a cheaper price. All but Kyle Walker-Peters have come in at £6.0m, making Lloris the cheaper alternative for anyone looking at matches with Newcastle, Fulham, Watford and Brighton in the first six Gameweeks. Spurs do face Manchester United and Liverpool in that period, though.

Meanwhile, last season’s Golden Glove winner David De Gea has come in as the most expensive goalkeeper at £6.0m. As mentioned, his hike up from £5.5m is expected to cause some damage to his ownership figures. The United man kept more clean sheets than anyone else in 2017/18, but there are now more cost-effective options at Old Trafford.

Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Diogo Dalot are all priced at £5.5m, while the reclassified Ashley Young, who has been handed the same price as De Gea but offers the prospect of attacking returns, could prove to be a savvy investment. What we can be assured of with De Gea and no other United defender, however, is guaranteed starts.

Elsewhere in United’s squad, Antonio Valencia is £6.5m and Chris Smalling starts at £6.0m.

Who are the best mid-price goalkeepers?

Whichever of Nick Pope or Tom Heaton gets a starting berth at Burnley is worth considering this season. Both goalkeepers start at £5.0m after the Clarets kept 12 clean sheets in 2017/18. Pope had an impressive campaign, finishing as the fourth-highest scoring goalkeeper despite not making an appearance until Gameweek 4. The extra money might be worth paying given that Burnley shot-stoppers often do well for save and bonus points, while just three teams (Man City, Chelsea and Crystal Palace) rank higher for defence on our season ticker in the first six Gameweeks.

England’s World Cup penalty shootout hero, Jordan Pickford, remains at £5.0m and also has kind fixtures in the opening six weeks. Arsenal are the only side from last season’s top six who he will face in that period, a run of matches that includes home fixtures against Southampton, Huddersfield and West Ham and trips to Wolves and Bournemouth. However, with Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams both priced up at £4.5m, the veteran centre-backs may provide more cost-effective cover.

Pre-season should give us an indication as to which Arsenal goalkeeper – Petr Cech or Bernd Leno (both £5.0m) – will start the season as Unai Emery’s first choice. Leno has a reputation for saving spot-kicks: the German goalkeeper has stopped nine of the 39 penalties he has faced in the Bundesliga.

Fantasy managers should avoid Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka (£5.0m), as the Magpies currently sit bottom of our season ticker for defence. In their first six matches, the Magpies host Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal and travel to Manchester City, Cardiff and Crystal Palace. Only three goalkeepers (Loris Karius, Ederson and Lloris) kept more clean sheets than Dubravka after his debut in Gameweek 27. However, he ranked just 16th for saves made between then and Gameweek 38.

Who are the best budget goalkeepers?

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) has made a swift return to the Premier League after former employers Swansea City were relegated. The Polish shot-stopper, who made more saves than any other goalkeeper last season, joins a side who had the joint-worst defensive record in the division in 2017/18.

West Ham face three of last season’s top six in the opening six Gameweeks, also playing Bournemouth (h), Wolves (h) and Everton (a) in that run of half-dozen matches.

The Hammers’ fixtures rotate perfectly with Southampton this season. A pair-up with Alex McCarthy/Fraser Forster (both £4.5m) should, in theory, give an unbroken run of home matches between now and the end of the season.

It’s hard to justify investment in Mathew Ryan (£4.5m) in the early stages of the season. Brighton face Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham in the first six weeks, with away trips to Watford and Southampton to come in Gameweeks 1 and 5; their only favourable match-up is a home fixture against Fulham in Gameweek 4.

The Seagulls’ home matches dovetail beautifully with Newcastle’s this season, but with Dubravka prohibitively priced at £5.0m, a £4.5m defensive double-up (e.g. Dunk/Lejeune) may be the better route to go when both sides’ fixtures ease off from Gameweek 8.

Our season ticker ranks Crystal Palace’ first nine fixtures as the most favourable from a defensive perspective, so Vicente Guaita/Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) could prove to be an astute purchase.

Bournemouth’s opening fixtures are also particularly attractive, although Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) would surely lose out to a cut-price Charlie Daniels as many FPL bosses’ chosen Cherries pick in defence.

Palace and Bournemouth’s fixtures, coincidentally, intertwine exactly to give an unbroken run of home matches between now and Gameweek 38.

Cardiff and Huddersfield’s mixed starts would seem likely to deter investment in Alex Smithies and Jonas Lossl (both £4.5m), meanwhile.

Forward line might be a bit weak, but have three decent captain options.

    Robertson Coleman Tomkins Daniels Schelotto
    Salah Alexis Siggy Jota Masuaku

Yeah very heavy defense. As mentioned above I wrote a program that analyses 92m combinations and in all cases of formation 343, 442 etc. Heavy defense gave the maximum number of points

        1. firetog
          • 7 Years
          5 years, 10 months ago

I started off using the FPL's PPM numbers but realised they seemed flawed. A 5 minute Sub appearance counts as 1 game and if a player had a lot of those, like Austin then the numbers are low. so I tweaked them a bit. I took the Total points of a player and divided that number by starting appearances + sub appearances/4

The logic being that if they played 4 quarters thats equivalent to 1 game.
Its not an exact science as they would be getting 4 points for 4 sub appearances instead of 2 points for a 90 minute game.

But all these numbers are last years numbers and wont match next years numbers. the point of the exercise was to identify price categories per position that provided the highest overall weekly score.

It seems a risk to me. Stones has been coming along, Laporte started to get games at the end of last season and now Kompany is fit. I think Otamendi was nailed last season due to lack of options. Not sure that will be the case this year. Also he seemed prone to defensive errors too. For the reasons above I've opted for Mendy (assuming he is fit). Cheap and more offensive than Otamendi and currently noone to take his place.

      1. Pumpkinhead - I'm ITK …
        • 14 Years

I think at the start Mendy is more of risk. I'm not sure he's that fit yet plus he got the prolonged rest. Pep said last season how vital Otamendi is to his style of play. He broke the record for passes by a defender or something didn't he.

I've come to the conclusion that maybe the idiotic plan to have a terrible bench may be worth it for this:
    Ederson (Boruc)
    Bellerin Robertson Douglas
Deulofeu Salah (C) Sane Jota Cairney
    Aubamyang Aguero

Bench: Boruc, Obi-Wan Bissaka, Schelotto, Quaner.

I started the season once with 5 City players a long time ago.
Hard to remember who they were but Nasri who came from Arsenal at the time was one of them.

It backfired and did not go well as i would not make a transfer in the opening weeks so i could keep them.

      *never again

With the cheapest players in FPL being 4.0m, and you have to pick 15 players.... if you deducted 4.0m from every player's price, and deducted 60m from your budget... would it change how you pick your team?

For example, Aguero would be 7.0m, Salah would be 9.0, 4.0 Defs would be free etc.

Out of a 40m budget it would be interesting to see how it looks!

Did you read my comment on the last page? It makes a lot more sense when comparing players to view your investment as [Price - Cheapest possible option] than just [Price].

We dont have a 100m budget in reality, we have a 36m budget to upgrade our players from the cheapest options. Once you start thinking about prices like this you realize that PPM the way people use it is an absolutely terrible and misleading stat to determine value among other things.

I don’t see how this affects our selection...only perception of value

instead of thinking a player that cost 10 mill is twice as much as one that cost 5, when you factor in that you have to use minimum 4 mill to cover this spot anyways, this player is actually 5 times more expensive... nit the whole picture, but maybe something to think about?

        2. Brosstan

Its important when you are trying to find a good balance between value and spending your entire budget.

Your own post a few pages back about the difference in value between Salah and Firmino + Mane is a good example of how a selection can be affected by a flawed perception of value. Using normal prices you came to the conclusion that Salah >>>>>> Mane + Firmino in terms of value. Using the alternative way of looking at prices the conclusion is that value wise Salah is very close to Mane + Firmino

      2. Brosstan

Just a quick example. Defender A costs 5.0 and got 100 points while defender B costs 10.0 and got 200 points. Using PPM, it seems like you got the same value from your investment at 20 PPM over the season. In reality, you only invested 1.0 in player A but 6.0 in player B, so the "added value" from your investments was far greater from player A than player B.

Of course you cant follow value blindly as cheaper players provide more value and you also want to spend your entire budget but its something to consider when comparing players.

Actually this is great thinking! like why would you not pay 2 mill for alonso/otamndi/azpi/valencia and their relative secure 150+ points instead of 8,5 for for kanes 220? (iknow captancy comes in here, but)

I'm trying to apply this after a (fairly) successful fantasy WC where I loaded up on premium defence. Even tough I still got some bad captain picks i still did good because of 'all' the players consistently delivering.

A fpl team with this thinking could be:

      Ederson
      VVD, Jones, Valencia, Kolasinac, Alonso
      Sané, Mane, Pogba, KDB(C)
      Firmino

      Fabianski, 4,5 x 3

      0,5 itb

Doesn't really make much sense as it radically skews the points-per-million measure.

That is the figure to look at, trying to maximize that figure across your team.

That's basically all the RMT tool is.

But is it not more a case that the first 4.0m of any player is effectively "free" and therefore shouldnt be included for points/comparisons calcs?

          • 9 Years

You are right. PPM is flawed. Something more refined like "points per million invested above 4.0/4.5m" would be better.

point per mill after 4, for top scorer each position last year
            ddg - 86
            azpi - 75
            salah - 33,6
            kane - 25,5

            some others:
            kdb - 34
            gross - 54
            firmino - 32

ofc the point is to get maximum points irrelevant of their cost, but there is defenatly a pattern to be seen if you ask me

...and including the 4m you'll find it a lot more even

Cutting 4m off the price will lead you to get all players 5m and below 🙂 Which is clearly nonsense.

yes ofc it is nonsense with just 5 mil players, which is why this thinking is great. you see, when applying this, you dont even need to have 5 mil players, but only solid picks in each position. then you naturally want to skew this to your liking, so you can fit in your potential captain on behalf of a budget pick.

its not black and white, its more like a piece of info you can choose to look at, but we still need to pick the players that will get the most points:)

Not really, cos if you lop 4m off a playing 4m player, they generate infinite points per million spent...in which case, fill your team with all 4/4.5 players.

In reality, you're looking for 8-9m players to score double the points of 4/4.5m players cos they're twice the price...if they don't double the score, why do you have them?

By the same token, Salah's 13m price isn't ridiculous...it's really quite reasonable...for 3 times the price of a 4.5m mid, he'll also certainly score 2.5-3x more (if you assume most 4.5m mids will bring in 80ish, maybe 100 at best)

Where you win/lose the season is finding those breakout bandwagon players that significantly beat the ppm average, and get on them early. The likes of Vahrez, Kane, King, Alonso in seasons past and Salah last year.

            • 7 Years

Yes this is trua also, i think the point being made is not to have expensive players, but rather be a bit more modest about your picks so its easier to pick up these 'bandwagons' u describe and also be less exposed if your captain picks fail. In other words, if you load up on lets say kane, salah and aguero to ensure you get great cap options, this may hurt more than you think, which is evident when you look at their value in this way.

My concern is that the dream may well come crashing down on Wednesday and with a massive influx of “fans” into Moscow from the UK it will get ugly. We’ll blame the Russians though because they went out and clearly were looking for a fight...
