How Foster and Watford can form part of defensive rotation in 2018/19

Ben Foster could help Watford form part of an effective defensive rotation this season after his move from West Bromwich Albion.

The data would suggest he stands to bring improvements to the Hornets’ back-line, compared to previous number one Heurelho Gomes.

We’ve run the rule over Foster to see what his Fantasy Premier League prospects are this season.

THE HISTORY

Ben Foster finally called time on a six-year spell at West Bromwich Albion this summer after the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League. Having proved a fashionable asset for Fantasy football in recent years, his popularity was damaged last season by the struggles of his club, who finished bottom of the league.

However, the 123 FPL points Foster amassed in 2017/18 turned out to be the third-best score of his career. In fact, the ten clean sheets he helped keep was his second highest tally in the Premier League; only in 2014/15 did he register more shut-outs. The 101 saves he registered was also in keeping with expectations.

The main blot statistically on his final season with West Brom was the fact that he ranked bottom of the division for expected goals prevented, with -8.80.

Foster’s FPL pedigree goes back a long way, though. He first made a name for himself by making 178 saves and recording 153 Fantasy points in 2010/11 with Birmingham City.

Since then he has made over 100 saves in five of the last eight campaigns and was only below that number between 2013/14 and 2016/17 as he struggled with injury and team selection.

PROSPECTS

Foster certainly has what it takes to better Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) in the Watford net and help the Hornets be a source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

There is a decent foundation in place already at Vicarage Road as manager Javi Gracia targeted defence as an area in need of improvement after he took over from Marco Silva in January.

In the first 24 Gameweeks of 2017/18 Watford ranked 18th in the division for clean sheets and only Stoke City (50) had conceded more goals than them (44).

Between Gracia’s first match in Gameweek 25 and the end of the campaign the Hornets were ninth-best for clean sheets and 12th for goals conceded. In fact, only Man City (75) and Liverpool (97) allowed fewer shots on goal than Watford (130) over that same period.

They also ranked fifth-best for shots on target allowed (49) and seventh for big chances conceded (27).

If Watford begin 2018/19 in similar form then Foster is likely to perform better than Gomes.

The Brazilian only played one match under Gracia because of injury, but loanee Orestis Karnezis is no longer at the club and therefore unavailable for comparison.

Gomes’ spell in the team was under Silva, when Watford weren’t as assured at the back. Crucially, despite facing more shots on target per game last season, he still made fewer saves than Foster did per match.

The former West Brom man also out-performed Gomes for goals conceded per game as well as clean sheets too.

With that in mind, the hope is that Watford may be the source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

The Hornets do have some tricky fixtures early on, with Tottenham and Manchester United among their first six matches.

However, Foster could be rotated with fellow £4.5m goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to give managers this run over the first six Gameweeks: Brighton (H), Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (H), Wolves (H), Everton (A), Fulham (A).

New Chelsea manager might go 4 atb so Alonso is a doubt for LB. I'd go Azpi

Way too much in defence imo. Robertson and PVA could be worth it but not sure if Coleman will still produce attacking returns to be worth more than Pickford with saves. We don't know if Alonso is in Sarri's plans but he's less appealing if they play a back 4. I'd start by downgrading them; midfield and attack are decent and could be even better if you move the cash.

One thing I've noticed is: it's hard to play the fixtures - there are 6 top teams so the fixture list for every team is just a sea of green and red. Form over fixtures definitely this year

yeah playing against top 6 is unavoidable sometimes , its not always a bad thing though , whoever was brave/stupid enough to play fabianski last year away to City i think , when they lost 5-0 , but he still ended up with max bonus + save points can attest to that

Eve Sou Bur Car Wat all avoid top 6 teams in the first 3 gws. These are the teams to choose from for those spots outside the big names. If you WCing early to bring in WC players from gw4 then it might be a viable way to play the fixtures initially

I'm definitely starting with him, if he does struggle to reproduce last season's form, then there's no shortage of players to replace him with, but if he scores a couple in his first game then lots of non-Salah owners will be clamouring to get him in and his price will go up accordingly. Plus he's a set-and-forget captain option for most of the season.

If he gets 300 points again, he's a bargain.

For 13m, even 250+ would be worth it. Unlike Kane who scored just 217 points but is overpriced at 12.5m.

For now yes. Moses > Robbo, Mahrez > Silva, 4.0 def > 4.5 def is my another thinking. But let say Bennet and Peltier is nailed starters, then its insane to ignore them. Plus, Moses could play his old role.

Wait for line ups today & bring in a starting Eng/Belg keeper.

Austin at 6m for me if fit.
King a punt at 6.5 but hard to know with BOU.
Benteke for a mega punt, but could be a value differential at 6.5 that will be largely ignored for obvious reasons.
Wolves striker at 5.5 and 5.0 might be ok, depending on who gets the starting berth.

That's a deadzone price for me. There's value at 7m but not below, so I prefer to nab a 4.5-5m benchie and invest 2m elsewhere where you will get more points for your money..

I'm liking Austin as a 6m first sub with two cheapies. Having no Salah allows this quite comfortably imo. But if going Salah, like most, I totally agree with you.

We have similar philosophies - best value is at the back, also fill up on prime midfielders and go easy up top. With Salah as perma-captain I'm not even getting one 10m+ striker and intend to play mostly 541 or 451.

For me, Southampton just don't create or score goals (or keep clean sheets). It's been like that for 2 seasons now and I have no faith left in them as FPL assets. To be fair, if Austin doesn't fire, you've not sacrificed anything and can easily switch for whichever cheap striker shows.

Cool, I'm thinking it might be an interesting way to start the game. If 5 atb works out it could give a great boost and worst case, if it's looking a bad move, we can wildcard.
Whether to go with Salah or not is my big dilemma, obviously much much prefer him over Mane but I feel spending 13m on him weakens the rest of my team and I've tried numerous ways of fitting him in but took him out again every time!
Still undecided whether to begin the season without him though (as it's so high risk with those three opening fix).

Yeah, I've got one draft with Salah and one without. The one without has budget forwards, a reasonable defence and an unbelievable midfield - look:

              Mane, Sane, Mahrez, Sanchez, Deulofeu.

For 3 weeks that could be massive, although I'd have to wold card early.

    an experimental team i'm considering

    Foster
    Robertson-Cedric-Tomkins
    Salah-Sanchez-Jota-Hoilett
    Auba-Laca-Arni

    Patricio-Chalobah-Diop-4.0

the concerns are obviously playing the 2 promoted players in midfield , but they are both main men at their respective teams who play in very attacking positions , so should both be involved in a high % of goals their teams do manage to score

also its unknown at this stage if Arni will still play up front (imo he's gold if he does) , and if Auba and Laca will play together , but if they do it could be a very potent partnership , which we seen glimpses of at the end of last season

Way too punty atm. Hoilett and Jota obvious ones. Arnie mightn't get the freedom that he had under Moyes. Laca not a certain starter. Hughes not guaranteed to play three atb. Prob pointed out the obvious but cant be going into GW1 with that many punts! Pre-season will likely tell you more, GL!

Taa will definitely not start gw 1. Klopp said as much yesterday.

Alli and trippier are also at risk.

Depends on Mendy and Firmino starting GW1 which I think is unlikely (for Mendy anyway).

Also depends on Mou's attitude towards Martial. We'll see in the pre-seasons but my feeling is he probably won't use him if he can get that young Serb he wants.

Thx...Martial is a punt, hopefully we’ll have teamsheets before the Utd match starts on GW1 Friday night... if Martial isn’t starting hat slot can go to Lingard... if he isn’t starting it can be Siggy, Theo, Mili, Mkhi, Ramsey etc...

Mendy was originally Alonso but not sure about Chelsea now. Closer to GW1 if Mendy is a doubt I might flip back to Alonso or Azpi - want a pen elite defender in that slot

Firmino will start. Klopp confirmed he will be at liverpools france training camp two weeks before season starts. He is so important to how we play. No chance he does not start

anyone else think willian (7.5) could become a very good option with Sarri managing?

Out of interest why do you think Sarri makes him an even better option? Did Conte not rate him?

Not a chelsea fan so i'm not very knowledgable on this but I know it was a sour relationship between Willian and Conte

He could be a brilliant FPL option; he could be sold.

No, Conte hated him. He tweeted a photo of the squad with Conte screened out and Conte never played him again. If Sarri rates him, he's nailed into my midfield but we'll have to wait a while.

Willian is one of EPLs most underrated players but flatters to deceive FPL wise.

Starting to narrow things down. Currently got Siggy and Austin with £0.0 ITB. Is Ramsey a better option than Siggy, or I could go Mkhitaryan leaving £0.5 ITB or upgrade Austin to King. Currently got Coleman and Auba as other Everton and Arsenal players. What do you think ?

Has anything definite been released about WC players not starting GW1 or is it all speculation?

KDB in particular is an important one to know, any chance Pep will start him GW1?

I suspect they're going to return to first team duty in dribs and drabs, off the bench and so on. A nightmare to plan transfers and even a wild card.
