The best set-piece takers and targets for FPL Gameweek 2

Fantasy Premier League managers are encouraged to factor the Gameweek 2 set-piece match-ups in their transfer plans in the next few days.

In the first of a new series of Members articles we will assess where set play situations can be exploited each week.

Where this differs from the set-pieces tab is that we have added extra detail on how many of each set-piece has been taken so far, which players have had the most attempts from set-plays in terms of goal efforts, as well as how like teams are to receive or give away free kicks or penalties.

That way, by comparing each team’s overall set-piece data to find any mismatches, individuals expected to benefit from these situations will become clearer.

We ran similar articles during the World Cup and found them to helpful to Fantasy managers, hence why we have decided to bring them to FPL.

Obviously we only have round of data so far so it may difficult to find too many over-arching trends right now, but we’ll be building on this template every week for Members to use when making their transfers or deciding on team selection.

Any differences between the takers here and on the set-pieces tab are purely because that individual is not available in Gameweek 2. For example, Junior Stanislas is an important figure in set-pieces for Bournemouth but will not feature at West Ham through injury, so we have removed him the list of potential takers for this weekend’s match.

Is there any substance to the idea Aguero may miss pitch time this weekend or is it all conjecture and is now a 'thing' that only exists on here?

There's no substance to it. Pep doesn't rotate nearly as much as people make out and there's no reason to believe Aguero won't start.

An assumption that Huddersfield being an easier opposition meaning Pep can afford to play other players like Sane and Jesus who were benched.

Why would Pep drop Aguero just after 1 game?
He was pretty impressive in the CS.
Also, Pep doesnt rotate his team heavily at the start of the season.
It is later when cup matches and CL come into consideration that Pep rotates his team more often.

      Correct me if Im wrong.

Man City wants to win the Champions League and EPL. They gotta rest players. Plus, they have easy depth to deploy.

Jesus, Sane, D Silva, Otamendi, Kompany, Delph, and Danilo need minutes to stay sharp. Pep knows he still wins with rotation, so he is going to rotate.

It was the same last year yet City's main assets all racked up huge FPL totals. If you decide to own any of them you have to take the odd resting on the chin and not panic, be that GW2 or 20.

Correct. Jesis only started 2-3 times over Aguero last year when fit. And why should players need to be rested already in Gameweek 2 when they still need gametime in the new season and the manager needs to settle this year’s team?

Makes no sense and only kneejerking on here.

      No real substance.

There are a few things to bring some doubts in though.

He has a ready made replacement who he gushes over constantly- Jesus.

Aguero shooting instead of squaring to KDB v Arsenal is the kind of thing Pep goes berserk about.

Agüero is probably the better captain this week...but I'm probably going Salah again.

They are not wrong in a way. Kamara was on my bench GW1 and they feel it is better to just keep him on the bench and use funds elsewhere. Whereas I wish to use these funds to get a good quality playing striker to allow for rotation with a mid priced mid during tougher fixtures.

Jimenez has an atroicous fixture vs City in GW3. A southampton striker, I'd wait on who is the prefered duo out of those three. I'd have Ings if he is nailed.
But still, with only one GW, all those choices are a little too punty to waste an FT. Just save it if you're benching Kamara anyway. Await more data in GW2

Sterling may play instead of 1 of Jesus or Aguero for starters. Mahrez may play as RWB, with Walker as RB. Mendy would be LWB. No room for Sane.

This. Ideally from an FPL perspective, we'd want a duo of Jesus and Kun, but Sterling was too impressive vs Arsenal to drop imo. Sane can play LWB, tbf, but again, Mendy's performance makes that unlikely.

Pep had some pretty harsh commments after the game about Mendy getting too far forward and leaving defensive duties.
As a Mendy owner this has me worried but not much mention of it on here. As stated above an angry Pep can very easily lead to rotation.

True. I remember a few years back in Barca when Henry scored in a CL game, I believe, but he kept appearing on the oppositie wing when Pep specifically told him to keep on the other side.
            Subbed on HT.

He was playing almost like an attacking midfielder, getting into the middle of the pitch. Walker was just making overlapping runs on the right like an RB, but Mendy was something else. Arsenal had a big chance because he left the backline exposed.

He doesn't get forward when Sane is on the pitch though, as seen in the first half of CS, since Sane provides that width.

            1. Andy_Social
              • 11 Years

Except that I can foresee thrilling moments when Mendy wanders into central positions and Sane bombs on overlapping him. Yes, it leaves a gap at the back which needs covering by a DM but I hope Pep gives Mendy licence to roam.

he also needs to learn how they play, and he is City´s only left back so Peps comment could also be interpreted into different outcomes, and second guessing that man is hopeless anyway.

If Mahrez plays RWB and Walker CB, they’ll have no width on the right as Mahrez cuts inside. Unlikely

    4. Jackie Moon
      • 5 Years

Why would Pep switch to a 352 formation? His 433 has worked superbly and I can't see him changing the shape, except maybe for a once off/unusual change for a specific opponent. He has no many mids/wingers/forwards that it makes no sense to play 3 central defenders.

Not sure - Bailly is on my watchlist to possibly come in around GW4.
And if I lose Mane when Pool fixtures swings I will probably get Erik.

Sterling and KDB might end up being the most rotation proof. If you want o spend the cash that's the way I would go.

Currently I have Mendy KDB and Bilva, so until Bilva becomes an issue I am not even looking at other City options. However when I have to I don't know how I will afford a Bilva upgrade to another City mid - it ain't going to be pretty.

Surely we cant have them all?!

There is a possibility of Smalling and Jones being first choice as well. United have a lot of options there.
Also, I'd easily go Sterling over Eriksen if both were equally nailed because City will blow those teams away! all the promoted teams since last season.
Also, he's always in the box waiting for a tap in. Always excites more than an Eriksen long ranger.
Although, Eriksen is more nailed and on setpieces.

Yeah UTD defence is a nightmare and I might stay clear, but don't know if I would lose him if he continues to start.

Also I have a weird very expensive 3 mids structure so my plans won't apply to most.
I have Salah KDB and then have a 9.5 spot that can be Mane and Erik etc.

Created a load of chances. But would still (c) Aguero out of the two. Chelsea beat them 3-0, imagine what the scoreline would be vs City.
Fulham didn't look too bad, Mitro was great, just Hennesey kept him at bay. Tot looked terrible, at least in the 2nd half vs Newcastle.

I had not even thought of that. The upgrade cash from the VVD to TAA move could go there but I like KDB looking pretty nailed and steady stream of points. And with the fixtures for Bellerin.
But then again Sterling got nearly 2600 minutes last year and looks more explosive. Thanks will consider.

Bernardo was pretty lucky to get the goal against Arsenal
Never looked great as an attacking threat but got his goal with his 1 and only shot in the game (pretty good finish though).

I was speaking of Bilva not being a great attacking force FPLwise.

Hardly saw him in the box and stuff. Hopefully he produces better numbers against Hudds. Would be a must have then at that price and with those fixtures!

He looked good enough to me. As an attacking asset, any City player who gets decent game time racks up FPL points. He'll be no different but better value due to his price.

That was the plan don't mean it can't change. Plus I have no idea where the upgrade cash for a second City attacker will come from if I have to lose him.
Mkhi was far from impressive even given it was against City.
Rambo a non option really. Injury issues will always be there I think. Sad but true.

Yeah but it could be a 352 or some variation where Pep might play a winger in the Mendy/ Walker slots. Not saying it will happen just saying anything is possible and nobody is secure.
But if Bilva really gets restricted minutes then Walker is my only realistic option to have 3 City. So I have to agree, though I had not considered it til you said it.

Have him...not going to think too much until he gets drop. Everyone in the mids bar KDB and perhaps Sterling are prone to rotation.

      • 9 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

I have him, but even if he's benched I'll wait and assess. A golden rule of FPL has always been stick to nailed players. But who at city is really certainly nailed anymore? Are we just meant to avoid them all? If you sell Bilva and bay say Stirling, you just know he'll be the one that's rested the following week.

I think we just have to accept that the cost of buying into one of the most potent attacks these days is the risk of rotation, so you just need to take the rough with the smooth. The reality could be the 7.5m guy is the one you can stomach being on your bench from time-to-time, over the 11m one.

Wait to see what happens with Aguero. If he doesnt do well or dosent start then yes maybe Mendy and kdb or sterling can be your two city attackers. I personally didn't go for Ederson or even Allisson beacuse of this potential problem where I want three liv or city players to provide attacking returns. Mendy and robertson are part of the attacking returns trio.

I would go Smalling to Bailly just due to security of strts instead of Shaw who had never been a Mourinho favourite.

Mkhi played 90 mins. Not sure why you had him in as it was likely he would blank against city. Neither Bernardo or Willian are better options unless Mkhi isnt nailed. Bothe Bernardo and Willian arent nailed either for that matter.

. could easily score vs Pool? i would wait after the pool game, not buying Zaha and Arnie was exactly this; they play vs Pool in the first two gwks, won´t even have a shot on goal. Having attackers vs Pool is not going to be fruitful this season, barring some from the top teams maybe. Against all other oppositions, that West Ham game will be the reference. They won´t allow them a shot on goal (at least no other than twenty yards out or so). After Liverpool, Benteke could be good, although i would try to fork out some 0.5 to get Zaha instead?

Depends on what you can do with the extra 1.0m. Neves doesnt need to score as well as Jota to justify 5.0.

That said, probably too early to tell. If Neves is more involved in creating chances he may be great value.

Is Scout Picks Challenge coming back this year?
Haven’t seen anything from @ocprodigy in a while.
Appreciate he was very busy last year - would be great if he was starting it up again.

What is all the Kun not good for captain talk?
    Any reason he won’t start?
Jesus looked far from ready. And also looked bad.

      Aguero looked bad too.
Should have crossed the ball to KDB - Pep dont like it.
Jesus wont sit on the bench forever and it is as good a game as any to give him a start.

      Those are the main reasons.
Dont know how I feel about it all. Also think there is a risk he doesnt start, it’s 55/45 Aguero starting imo. The risk in itself will probably prevent me from captaining him.

Salah, Arnie and Mendy are all decent choices I think.

Sanchez not looking good for Brighton? I personally don't like him, but a lot of managers rate him for that match.

Hey guys, I have Rashford and Jota who I want to get rid off, Rashford performance last game was awful, and I am thinking to sub him for Tosun / Zaha (I personally prefer Zaha, but he is gonna face Liverpool next week). Jota is gonna have a tough fixture against Leicester (away) and I would like to sub him for James Maddison. Thoughts? Cheers.
