Spot the Differential – Double Man City defence and Brighton at home

A Manchester City defensive double-up and alternative attacking options at Everton are top of our differentials list for Gameweek 4.

We’ve also looked at Brighton’s home match with Fulham where we believe there will be plenty of goals.

All three options we have picked out as differentials this week are in under five percent of teams and could help propel their owners up the Fantasy Premier League worldwide rankings.

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m)

Ownership: 2.9%

With some uncertainty over the best Manchester City midfield options, suggestions have arisen that there could be merit in doubling-up on their defence, on top of the 33 percent owned Benjamin Mendy (£6.3m).

After all, no side has allowed fewer shots on target than the champions even if they have only kept one clean sheet so far. Upcoming fixtures against Newcastle (home), Fulham (home), Cardiff (away) and Brighton (home) all have strong potential for shutouts.

Centre-back Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) can offer an additional way into that defence having played every minute of the season thus far, John Stones (£5.5m) and Vincent Kompany (£5.4m) rotating around the Frenchman.

However, the 24-year-old can offer more than just defensive returns as the key set piece threat for the champions so far in 2018/19. His three efforts from dead ball situations led to his goal last week at Wolves, and he now goes up against a Newcastle side that ranks third-worst for set piece attempts allowed in the first three Gameweeks. Furthermore, only Brighton have given away more fouls than Newcastle thus far, meaning there are sure to be plenty of free kicks for Laporte to latch onto in Gameweek 4.

Set pieces were a particular area of strength for Man City in 2017/18, with only Arsenal and Bournemouth netting more goals from such situations than Pep Guardiola’s men.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m)

Ownership: 1.5%

Everton playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) could prove a powerful differential in Gameweek 4. Despite ranking fifth in the league for chances created (eight) he is in just 1.5 percent of teams. His low ownership obviously stems from the more obvious threat posed by cheaper options Richarlison (£6.7m) and Theo Walcott (£6.7m).

But there is still plenty for the Icelandic international to offer in Gameweek 4, especially with Richarlison suspended for the next two league matches. In his role as the Toffees set piece taker, he is top for successful crosses so far in 2018/19 (eight).

The absence of the division’s top set piece target Michael Keane (£5.0m) and Richarlison could damage Sigurdsson’s appeal somewhat, but that may matter little considering the quality of their Gameweek 4 opponents Huddersfield.

The Terriers have conceded nine goals in their opening three matches, having allowed 57 shots and 11 big chances. For all three of those statistics, they rank bottom in the division.

Glenn Murray (£6.5m)

Ownership: 0.9%

Despite having a very favourable fixture in Gameweek 4, Brighton forward Glenn Murray (£6.5m) sits in just 0.9 percent of squads.

Fulham are yet to concede fewer than two goals in a match this season as a result of their ongoing problems at the back.

That statistic opens the door for Brighton to continue their fine form in front of the Amex Stadium faithful.

The Seagulls have found the net five times in their last three home matches, which were against top class opposition Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, the latter on two occasions.

Former Crystal Palace striker Murray has an excellent record when playing at home as well. When he was involved in a home match during the 2017/18 campaign, he played a part in 41 percent of the goals scored.

He continued that form by netting in Brighton’s 3-2 win over Manchester United in Gameweek 2, and can do so again against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

    Hi All,

On wc, was happy with the below but now I’m thinking should I take out Ederson and Wilson for Hennessey and Zaha?

    Ederson, Steklenburg.
    Bennett, AWB, TAA, Mendy, Alonso.
    Lerma, Lucas, Mikitayrian, Hazard, Salah.
    Wilson, Mitrovic, Aguero.

    Thanks All!

I am chewing over something the last couple of days and might need some advice on this one. just imagine you had a decent start so far and had a mix of ffs template and some differential from game week 1.over the next game weeks your initial team became template, how do you now separate yourself a little to create a gap between template also strengthen your team long term?do you can follow suit and get the players in you believe doing really well but others do the same, or do you punt on players like described in the article with low ownership but that would mean you might choose players not really passing your eye test or the fixtures are not right etc.how would you go forward and handle a situation like this?would really appreciate you input thank.

Forget about separating yourself from the template and just pick who you believe in because the template is pretty volatile at this stage

thanks but dont agree totally with "template is pretty volatile" yes maybe little parts of it, but if you look at the ffs template right now they could be 6 or more season keepers all ramping a lot of points over the season so these players would stay in a lot of teams if not knee jerked out of them.

Don't think anyone is a season keeper tbh. And is the ffs template really representative of the fpl template? If you're thinking about how your picks would affect OR I mean...

Just meant that you shouldn't include or rule out a player based on ownership right now, if they happen to become a template for the next few weeks so be it

Stick with the players performing. Don't worry about ownership. As soon as you start getting rid of players because of ownership it will most likely bite you. If your team is good and similar to the template it is fine. The template will change and you can change later. Please answer my question below 🙂

Yes, I played Hamer last week and he still managed to score the same number of points in 20 mins as DDG did in 90.

      Can’t you play both?

      1. ebb2sparky
        • 13 Years
        5 years, 8 months ago

I could play both but that would mean dropping either Jota or Mitro which i don't want to do

I get your point about DDG although not a fair comparison as they were playing spurs who are much better than burnley. Also Huddersfield were playing Cardiff who are terrible in attack so 0-0 was always on the cards. Southampton are much more likely to score than Cardiff

2-1 to Shaw at the moment which is consistent with my current thinking

I have Hennessey as well but sods law CPL get a clean sheet and Hennessey doesn't play and AWB stares at me from the bench like he did in GW1 !!

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned already but Mhiki is extremely unlikely to get a visa for their Europa League game against Qarabag FK, which means a little less of a rotation risk. It’s due to ongoing political tensions, the last time Dortmund played in Azerbajan he was left out of the squad due to visa & security concerns. Will likely be the same this time round

It's basically my team, but I have Walcott and Ings instead of Gundogan and Mitrovic. I'm feeling pretty good about it (especially if the Chelsea boys keep firing) but it is a bit nerve-wracking, especially because it's more than possible that Bennett won't be first choice in a few weeks. You've got to be mentally prepared for a few weeks of only being able to field ten - but it's possible that your team will score enough to compensate. If you could afford a playing 4.5 mid it would look much better - and with City rotation I think that I'd go Fraser over Gundogan. Good luck!

(Hoping you've got your notifications turned on!)

The more I ponder, the more I think you're a couple of 0.1s short of this. You need a slightly stronger bench. I kinda wish I'd done Rich to Fraser (instead of Walcott) and had the extra million to reinvest elsewhere so that my 4.5 mid wasn't my only probably-playing sub. Mine wasn't a WC though (just a -8) so if you were going to do it (and, of course, I'm assuming your team needs it - don't do it otherwise!) then I'd probably find an extra 0.5 to upgrade Pilkington at least.

Sorry - yours is the closest team I've seen to mine so started thinking too much!
